Hambili• Riduan Isamuddin, otherwise known as Hambili, took over the military

operations after Sungkar's death. • Was said to be one of Osama Bin Laden’s “Lieutenants.”• Main connection to Al-Qaeda.• Arrested in 2003 and currently being held in Guantanamo Bay.• After Hambili’s arrest Jemaah Islamiyah attacks began to decrease.

– Mantiqi 1 began to lose its power; Mantiqi 2 started taking over, which meant less connections with Al-Qaeda and more focus on Indonesia and religious aspects.

New leaders emerge but are soon submerged.

• Zarkasih, Abu Dujana, and Noordin Top, three radicals, took over after Hambili was captured.

• Zarkasih is said to have become the head of JI in 2005.

• Dujana became the head of the military wing and operations in 2005 as well.

• Both were captured in 2007, leaving one leader standing tall; Noordin Top.

• Top was an explosive expert and said to be the mastermind behind many bombing attacks that JI conducted

• Noordin Top was then killed in 2010. • With the death of Top, not much stir has come from

J; mostly because they are lacking leadership.

Old Leadership vs New Leadership• It seems neither types of leadership can make an

impact without being captured or killed. • All the present, and known, leaders have either passed

away, been killed, or are serving prison sentences.• Maybe this is the reason no new leader has stuck their

name out their. It seems leadership after the 2010 era, Top’s death, to the present time has stayed quiet and in the shadows.

• Soon someone will come out of hiding, and the chase for them will begin all over again.

• Terrorist groups will always have leaders; all the way until the last member is either captured or killed.
