ASPECTS OF SPORTSMANSHIPThe best games are the ones where it’s extraordinarily close. You’re on the edge of your seat and it’s going down to the wire. That last teamfight will decide it all and you really want to clinch that victory.

It’s important to remember that it’s easy to become frustrated on the field of battle, especially in a situation like this where you are striving so hard for victory. If you’ve had a bad day then this will be multiplied and it makes your efforts to be sportsmanlike that much harder. That’s why it’s so important to reflect on your behaviour across each aspect of sportsmanship.

Below you will find the different aspects of sportsmanship and a series of statements to assess your level with each one. To begin, decide which statement best reflects your level of sportsmanship. Be honest and only choose one that accurately describes how you behave. Don’t panic if you’re a Beginner; high level sportsmanship is hard to master. What’s important is that you’ve begun this journey and you know your current level. Then you will begin to understand what “good” sportsmanship looks like and what you should be aiming to improve.

After you have decided on a statement that best describes your behaviour, tell a friend or teacher why you made this decision and ask them if they think you got it right.

TEAM-ORIENTED MINDSETBeing team-oriented is about cooperating with your teammates through teamwork and effective communication. It also includes providing support, mentorship (when appropriate) and creating a friendly, welcoming environment for your teammates.

I can cooperate with my team on objectives and participate in planning team strategy when asked. I am able to communicate my plans in game and let teammates know when I need help. I am friendly in game and give advice to teammates when asked.

I proactively contribute to forming and executing team strategies and communicate effectively during challenging moments in game. I help the team learn from our games and inspire those around me by encouraging teammates, providing mentorship and promoting peer support. I help to create a welcoming and friendly club community.

BEGINNERMy teammates are often wrong so it's up to me to win, leading me to make decisions based on personal rather than team priorities. If someone is playing badly I will let them know with pings or calling them out in chat.

INTERMEDIATE

ADVANCEDI collaborate with my team in game and contribute to determining team strategy and objectives. I use open and effective communication to ensure the success of my team and not just my own performance. I can make friends with other players, support my teammates, and provide respectful and honest feedback regarding other players' skills.

Being respectful involves respecting other players and their opinions on strategy and gameplay, supporting teammates when they make mistakes and understanding that bad games happen to everyone.

BEGINNERMy strategies and playstyles are the right way to play so they take priority over other players' opinions and suggestions. I think other players make more mistakes than me and aren't as good at the game as they should be.

I expect that other players will have various skill levels, some are better than me and some are not. I don’t focus on other players’ mistakes in game and I can work around my teammates preferences or play styles.

I reasonably judge other players’ skill levels and consider their specialties when developing strategies. I encourage others to give their opinions and suggestions. I understand the stress that teammates experience when they have a bad game and reassure them when they make mistakes. I understand that every player has bad games from time to time.

I not only understand that players vary in skill but that each player has strengths and weaknesses and I apply these when developing strategies to give my team an advantage. I try to understand other players’ decisions and mistakes by looking at situations from their point of view. I encourage my team to empathise with struggling teammates instead of blaming them, and discourage unsportsmanlike behaviour.

DISCIPLINEBeing disciplined means trying your best and making an effort to win. Disciplined players recognise that being good at the game takes practice and mastering a variety of areas such as game strategy or how to play a role or champion.

INTERMEDIATE

BEGINNERI don’t think teamwork is a skill that needs to be learned and practised. I'm already good enough that I should be able to win enough games without making an effort to improve. I don't think it's worth taking the time to learn new ways to play the game, certain roles or champions.

I consistently apply effort in game to win and understand that planning and practice is necessary to improve. I attempt to improve my understanding of how to play the game and consider what role or champions I would like to focus on for personal improvement.

ADVANCEDI reflect on my performance in game to focus on areas of improvement and try to learn different strategies and ways to play with my team. I consistently practise certain roles or champions and try to master my teamwork skills like team-fighting and communicating to perform better for my team.

LEADERI apply persistent effort in every game and encourage teammates to continue trying their best. I use my defeats to find areas of improvement for myself and my teammates, encouraging them to practise and helping them focus on areas of improvement. I am open to advice on my skills and playstyle and encourage other players to provide it. I continuously work to improve my teamwork and gameplay skills and I am skilled at multiple roles and champions.

RESPONSIBILITYBeing responsible is about sticking to the duties of your role and staying involved in each game, pursuing victory honourably, acknowledging your mistakes and not blaming others for them.

BEGINNERI play for myself. If I have to play a role that I don't like then I don't try as hard. If I lose, it's mainly due to the mistakes of the other players on my team. I think that elo-boosting or hacking is sometimes justified and I will take a win whichever way it comes.

I usually try to fulfill a role on the team and I am able to recognise when I am at fault for a misplay or mistake. I believe that cheating is never justified and don’t use features like chat or emotes to throw my opponents off.

I always play my role with consistent effort in every game, admit when I make mistakes and think about how I could have done better when my team makes a bad play. I understand how cheating or using chat to throw my opponents off harms the competitive integrity of the game. I am recognised by others for my sense of fair play.

I adapt in difficult games, continuing to try to fulfil my role whilst teaching others how to best achieve their role in a given game in a positive way. I am able to explain how cheating is detrimental to the spirit of the game and I discourage any behaviour that would dispute the competitive integrity of the game. I prioritise reflecting and improving on my own gameplay when the team fails and encourage my teammates to do the same.

Being resilient means not allowing frustration to affect your gameplay, not giving up when you’re behind and controlling your temper. It involves having a trustworthy and honest character while being considerate of other players and what you say to them.

RESILIENCEBEGINNERIf a game is not going well, I tend to get frustrated and prefer to surrender. I often vent my frustration verbally and say whatever I want to other players.

INTERMEDIATEI try not to become frustrated and am not easily discouraged when I fall behind in game or my team is losing. I think about how my emotions impact my behaviour and what I say to other players, trying to be positive and not point out other players' mistakes in game.

ADVANCEDI never lose my temper with myself or teammates and prefer to see games where I am behind as challenges to overcome. I am motivated to play out a losing game unless the team chooses collectively to surrender. I am always aware of my emotions and how they affect my behaviour, choosing to focus on objectives in game rather than mistakes. I try my best to be trustworthy and honest.

LEADERI see games where I am behind as challenges to overcome and help teammates think the same way by rallying them to the challenge. I cope with disappointment and understand that both winning and losing are part of competitive play. I consistently keep my cool and try to positively influence the team’s mentality. I am considered trustworthy and honest by my teammates and encourage other players to be the same.

POSITIVE ATTITUDEBeing positive involves maintaining a positive attitude in-game while expressing humility in victory and grace in defeat.

BEGINNERWhen a game starts going badly for my team, I believe that the game is going to be a loss. I frequently believe that I’m carrying the game when winning, and I like to taunt the other team in all chat as well as gloat over victory.

INTERMEDIATEI try to maintain a positive attitude in game and treat other players well even when losing. I don’t put my opponents down and I try to remain humble in victory.

ADVANCEDI maintain a positive attitude in game even when dealing with the stress of defeat and competitive play. I am humble in victory and thank the opposing team for the game and congratulate opponents when I lose. I understand that teams, not individuals, win games.

I demonstrate a positive attitude and promote positivity among my team no matter the circumstances. I encourage humility in victory among my team and always congratulate opponents on their win, complimenting them on their play when possible. I thank teammates for their efforts and contributions in game and acknowledge the team efforts that go into winning games.
