Training Programmes Available

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain recognised qualifications whilst working.

An Apprenticeship is an employment-based programme and will allow you to work whilst obtaining the necessary qualifications to further your career prospects.

Each of these levels follows a specific programme of learning (also known as a ‘Framework’) which includes a:

• Competence based qualification e.g. a QCF NVQ

• Knowledge based qualification e.g. a Technical Certificate

• Essential Skills Wales (ESW) qualifications

As part of the QCF some occupational routes combine the occupational based qualifications and knowledge based qualifications in one.

Apprenticeship training can be undertaken in numerous occupational areas and training is fully funded by the Welsh Government via the European Social Fund (as long as eligibility criteria can be met).

Qualifications

As a result of the UK vocational qualification reform programme, vocational and work-related qualifications in Wales have changed to better meet the needs of the employer and learner and are now part of the Qualification Credit Framework.

All QCF qualifications and their units have a level and a credit value which will allow a learner to:

• build qualifications in small steps

• acknowledge that all learning could contribute towards a recognised qualification

• motivate learners to gain the skills needed to progress in the workplace

• provides a way to recognise work-based learning and training

Credits are a currency for learning which can be used to compare learning and qualifications. You can build the credits you achieve toward a qualification or other learning aim.

6

Qualification Credit Framework (QCF)

Competence based qualifications (QCF NVQ’s) are based on standards that have been identified by industry. A competencies qualification is a flexible and practical qualification which allows a learner to work at their own pace and is worth a set amount of credits.

Competence qualifications recognise what people can do. They can be achieved as long as it can be proven to the Training Officer that the standards (set out in the units of the qualification) are achieved.

The qualification is split in to a number of units; each unit has a credit value which is dependent upon the level and type of qualification.

What Are Competence Based Qualifications

91%of learners agreed we

Knowledge based qualifications are vocationally related additional qualifications which will be completed in conjunction with the competencies qualification. Knowledge based qualifications were introduced to significantly upgrade apprenticeships and allow you further opportunities for progression.

They confirm underpinning knowledge and understanding relevant to the competencies qualification and are part of the Qualification Credit Framework. Knowledge based qualifications are externally assessed so you will be required to attend the Training Centre for training and completion of the external assessment.

As part of the QCF some occupational routes combine the competence based qualification and knowledge based qualification in one.

Essential Skills are the day to day skills which help to improve learning and performance. They are used in all aspects of life such as education, training, work and life in general. They are often the first skills used when meeting people.

Essential Skills are part of the Qualification Credit Framework.

Essential Skills are transferable from one kind of job to another and are the passport to a successful career.

►Communication ►Digital Literacy ►Application of Number

Torfaen Training are pleased to announce that after extensive research we will be using the innovative award winning educational software - OneFile.

This new software provides the learner with direct access to the resources and training tools they need – anywhere, anytime. No wasted time travelling, you can study online, gather evidence and submit portfolio work. Additionally your training officer can send feedback without you having to schedule a meeting. All your portfolio

work will now be stored online which ensures, via the latest robust security features, that your data cannot be lost or stolen.

OneFile is an e-portfolio website / software based application designed to replicate a paper portfolio. It allows learners to interact with their own qualifications and gather evidence using a range of digital methods. You can use the website or the online app, but don’t worry if you are unfamiliar with computer technology as we also have a solution for you.

Learners have to provide evidence of competence in the units within the qualifications This evidence is filed in their portfolio. This evidence could be a combination of:

• Work products – recent work that they have produced.

• Testimony of competencies from supervisors, line managers and colleagues. These must be produced on headed note paper, signed and dated.

• Completed observation sheets prepared by Training Officers.

• Questions, either written or oral, which are completed in conjunction with the Training Officer.

• Case studies or personal statements

Evidence must satisfy all the requirements of the qualification. Go for the quality rather than quantity. A few well chosen pieces of evidence can count for much more than a vast amount of evidence which is only loosely applicable.

• Where possible choose evidence that is more recent, reflecting current ability rather than evidence which is dated. Although a good piece of dated evidence is better than a poor one.

• Ensure evidence is accessible for Internal Quality Assessment purposes.

Evidence does not necessarily need to be kept within your portfolio, it may be more appropriate for evidence to be held in electronic form as long as it is accessible for verification purposes.
