FORGOTTEN EVENTSir, Apropos the article ‘Reminiscing a true icon’ published inthe last issue of Sunday POST, I feel that National Youth Dayhas almost become a forgotten event in today’s time. Last yearwe organised a meeting to celebrate the occasion but most ofmy friends didn’t turn up. Students’ excitement knew no bounds afterthe Odisha government, following days ofdeliberation, finally decided to reopen theeducational institutions from the second

week of January. While pupils were more thanhappy to catch up with their mates after a longbreak, teachers, too, were anxious about going backinto the classroom, their second home. Needlessto say, this reopening certainly brought cheers formany. However, some are still in constant fear ofcontracting the deadly coronavirus. Teachers andstudents from various schools and colleges sharetheir joy and apprehension with Sunday POST andtell how different the post-lockdown scenario is.

Subhashree Das, a post-graduate teacher,English at Buxi Jagabandhu English MediumSchool, says, “Online class was completely newfor the teachers as well as the students. Mode ofteaching has gone througha sea change in the last coupleof months. Pandemic hadput the teachers in a virtualworld of teaching. Thoughit made many tech-savvy,there were drawbacks too.For instance, it was not alwayspossible to clear the doubtsof each and every studentwhile delivering lectures in an online class. So,after the reopening of educational institutions,students’ main concern is how to clear the doubtsthey have in their mind. Besides, they are worriedabout their practical classes because throughoutthe lockdown period we had been taking the theoryclasses only. On the other hand, it is becomingdifficult for us to take classes from 7.30 am to

1.00 pm wearing face masks and maintaining socialdistance.”

On returning to traditional classes, she furthersays, “Online classes are no substitute to classroomteaching. It is a different experience altogether tointeract with the students and address their issues.However, now we are observing that some students,after becoming familiar with online mode ofteaching, are reluctant to get into the classrooms.Some others are hesitant to rejoin due to coronascare. It is not just the students, many of us arealso in fear.”

“Having said that, I want to tell that Covid-19guidelines are strictly followed in our school,”assured Subhashree adding “Half of the studentswere present on the first day of the school but onthe second day the attendance increased to 85 percent. As per the government guidelines we are not

able to provide themtransport facilitywhich is whya few stu-dentsfromre-

mote areas couldn’t attend their classes.” Lipsa Mishra, a post graduate teacher at DAV

Pokhariput, says “We were not well versed withonline classes, so, both teachers and students hadsome issues. There were somedifficulties, like clearing doubtsand yelling at inattentive kids,which can’t be resolved vir-tually. We were eagerly waitingfor schools to reopen and Iam happy that it finally hap-pened.”

Speaking about the differ-ences between before and afterlockdown scenarios, Lipsa adds, “The classroomambience will never be the same again anytimesoon. Now we can’t have a free discussion with

masks on our face. Anyway, Iloved to see students returningto school and shouting in unison.The attendance was thin on

the first day, at Scienceclasses in particular.

I guess it is dueto their prepara-tions for variousentrance tests.Nevertheless, weenjoyed our re-turn to the class-room. All thenorms laid downby the govern-ment are beingfollowed reli-giously to ensuresafety of the students.

We have a corona committee in place whichis monitoring the proper compliance of covidguidelines at every classroom. While one benchhas been allotted to one student, teachers havebeen asked not to get close with the students.Besides, students have been asked to take foodinside the classroom and not to remove theirmasks till they reach home.”

Talking about the fear factor, she says, “Iwould be lying if I say we feel okay with thereopening. Be it the students or the teachers,all of us are a little scared as the vaccinationprocess is yet to begin. But we are fortunateenough to have such a great principal who hastaken all precautionary measures to check thetransmission.”

Diptibala Mishra, a Political Science lecturerat Sachidananda Higher Secondary School,Indipur, says, “There is a lot of differencebetween pre and post-lockdown scenarios in aclassroom. As the threat of contracting coronavirusis still there, all of us have to maintain socialdistance in a classroomwhich will make it lookmore like an examinationhall.

That apart, classroomteaching is not just aboutthe chalks and dusters. Itis about the ambiencewhich builds a bond be-tween teachers and stu-dents. Online classes are not beneficial from astudent’s point of view because it lacks directinteractions and discussion with students. Weare happy to be back in the classrooms. But itis difficult on our part to deliver lectures withcovers on our face. I often feel suffocated whiletaking classes. Besides, students also feel un-comfortable having masks on their face all thetime. Now, they are not allowed to have their

meals outside the classroom and exchange booksand copies with their friends which was acommon practice in normal condition. Takingclass with so many restrictions is really stress-ful.”

She further adds: “As the government hasmade it mandatory for educational institutionsto remain open on Sundays, it becomes difficultfor teachers to teach without a break. It willalso be stressful for the students if they areasked to study on Sundays.”

BJB College Principal Niranjan Mohapatrasays, “We have left no stone unturned to provide

a covid-free campus toour students with the re-opening of the college.As per the governmentnorms, all precautionarymeasures are being takenat the school followingthe government norms.The campus and class-rooms have been sanitisedwhile the students too

are made to maintain the protocols for theirsafety.”

He continues “Online classes have, no doubt,proved beneficial. We have almost covered 90per cent of the syllabus. Apart from our ownfaculties, some guest faculties were hired forrevision. Now students can have their doubt-clearing classes which will help them face theexaminations confidently.”

Ananya Subudhi, aPlus II second year stu-dent of JupiterCollege, says “I was oncloud nine when Icame to know aboutreopening of colleges.Due to network issues at my place, Icouldn’t attend my classes regularly.But, now I can clear all my doubts be-fore appearing the examinations.However, I must thank the authoritiesfor taking all safety measures.”

Sanket Pradhan, a Plus II Science stu-dent of SCS College,Puri says, “Classroomteaching has a charmof its own and onlineclasses cannot take itsplace. I was excited tomeet teachers andfriends after a longgap, not virtually anymore. Face-to-face interaction matters a lot in learn-ing. So, I am happy to be back at mycollege. Though precautionary meas-ures are in place, fear of getting in-fected by Covid 19 is there in the backof our mind.”

Suhani Sukanya Rai, a Class XII student of Buxi Jagabandhu EnglishMedium School,says, “Classroomteaching scenario be-fore and after thelockdown is com-pletely different.Earlier, a group ofsix-seven studentsused to have discussions about a proj-ect with their teachers whenever theywanted. That is not the case now. Wehave to maintain social distance and

put the mask on our face always.Anyway, I am actually happy to return to my classroom.”

Muktikant Mishra, a Class XII stu-dent of DPS Dhenkanal, says, “Everystudent loves to be in a traditionalclassroom as it in-cludes practical in-volvement and directinteraction withteachers. Lack ofcommunication in anonline class makes ita boring affair. Besides, classroomteaching has quite a few advantagescompared to virtual classes. Talkingabout precautions, I must say each stu-dent needs to be careful and follow thenorms strictly to reduce the risk ofcoronavirus infection. The authoritieshave taken all the measures for thesafety of teachers and students.”

Omm Sai Prasad Pani, a Class X stu-dent of Govt. Bisweswar Project HighSchool in Athagarh is of the opinionthat “I am quitehappy because myschool has openedafter so manymonths. Besides, theschool managementis trying its best toprovide us a corona free environment.Before entering the premises, we aregiven hand sanitiser and thermalchecking is done. Only two studentsare allowed to share a desk. Similarly,face mask has been made mandatoryfor all. Despite these measures, stu-dents are a little scared. This is a rea-son, no student dares to violate theguidelines.”

CRISPYn Plain flour (maida): 1/2 cup

n Salt to taste

n Oil: 5 tsp

n Finely chopped garlic: 2 tsp

n Finely chopped ginger: 2 tsp

n Finely chopped green chillies: 2 tsp

n Finely chopped onions: 1/2 cup

n Finely chopped carrot: 1/2 cup

n Finely chopped french beans: 1/2 cup

n Finely chopped cabbage: 1/2 cup

n salt to taste

n Schezuan sauce: 2 tsp

n Sugar: 1/2 tsp

n Plain flour for rolling

Ingredients

n Potato: 500 gm

n Salt: 5 pinches

n Refined oil: 2 cups For garnishing

n Black pepper: 3 pinches

Ingredients

Combine the plain flour, 1 tsp of oil and salt in a deep bowland knead into soft dough using enough water. Cover the

dough with a wet muslin cloth or lid and keep aside for 10 min-utes. Heat the remaining 4 tsp of oil in a broad non-stick pan,add the garlic, ginger and green chillies and sauté on a mediumflame for a few seconds. Add the onions, carrot, french beansand cabbage and salt, mix well and cook on a medium flame foranother 2 to 3 minutes, while stirring occasionally. Add theschezwan sauce and sugar, mix well and cook on a medium flamefor a few seconds. Keep aside. Divide the dough into 14 equal por-tions. Roll a portion of the dough into a 75 mm. (3”) diameter thincircle using a little plain flour for rolling and place 1 tbsp of the pre-pared filling in the centre of the circle. Hold it on your palms, foldthe two sides and pinch them. Fold the other open side and pinch itagain so as to form a triangle as shown in the image. Steam asmany as seven momos in a greased steamer for 8 minutes or till theyare cooked. Serve immediately with soy sauce and chilli garlic sauce.

Procedure

To prepare this easy recipe, you need to make sure that they are cut in the rightshape and size. They should neither be too thick, nor too thin and should be

cut clean and sharp. The trick is to first slice the potatoes and then cut themlengthwise. You can also use a fries cutter for that long, even shape. Now, washthe potatoes under running water till they are squeaky clean. Place them in a bowlof iced water for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep them submerged in water or they will turnblack. Now, heat the oil in a deep bottomed pan. Once the smoke starts appearing,reduce the flame and allow it to acquire a lower temperature. Now, deep fry thepotatoes in batches. Keep the flame low. This will make them crunchy and alsohelp retain their colour. Drain excess oil and place on an absorbent paper. Allowthem to cool. Now sprinkle salt and pepper and toss well. Serve immediately withketchup. They can also be served with burgers and cutlets. They replace carbs inmost continental meals. You can pack them for your kid's lunch.
