The Learning Kitchen
A fantastic training experience: The Learning Kitchen! Students work in a commercial kitchen and are taught culinary and life skills while gaining an opportunity to give back to the community. By being part of an energetic team that provides nutritional meals to drop-in centers and meal programs, students will have the chance of a lifetime!
What is the Learning Kitchen?
The Learning Kitchen is a 17-week employment and skills development program offered by FEED NOVA SCOTIA, funded by the Department of Community Services. The aim of the program is to help people experiencing barriers to employment escape the vicious cycle of low incomes, poverty, hunger and related issues.
Participants will spend time in the classroom and kitchen, building essential employment and life skills, along with fundamental culinary skills taught by a Red Seal Chef. These skills will prepare students for employment in the Foodservice industry or to pursue additional post-secondary training.
Included in the 17 weeks is a four week work placement . Food gathered through FEED NOVA SCOTIA’S Perishable and Prepared Food Recovery
program is combined with other perishable donations to give clients maximum exposure to full food service.
Included in the program is a four-week work placement that offers participants the chance to put newly acquired skills into practice while allowing greater exposure to the Foodservice industry.
Participants are provided with a stipend of $150/month while enrolled in the program.

Must be a minimum of 18 years of age Must have an interest in working in the Culinary Field Must be able to perform physically demanding work Must be able to commit to a full-time program If in receipt of Social Assistance must be approved by Social Worker Minimum grade 8-10 reading/math level is recommended
The program is held three times a year, Monday – Friday at the Nova Scotia Hospital Site in Dartmouth.
