This is a kenning poem. A bit like a riddle, a kenning

poem describes the subject of the poem without saying its name. It uses two-word lines to describe it

instead.

Can you guess the subject of

this kenning poem?

Kennings are usually two or three words which are joined together to

make a metaphorical description of the subject.

The first word in each line is a noun which is linked to the subject of the

poem in some way. It is linked to the

second word using a hyphen.

The second word in each of these lines is a verb which has been changed into a

noun by adding the suffix -er.

Can you remember the spelling rule for

adding a vowel suffix like -er to a word? Click here if you need a reminder.

Vowels: a e i o u (sometimes y)

When the verb has a short vowel sound and ends in a consonant, we need to double the

consonant and add -er.

Think of it as always having at least two consonants between the short vowel sound and the suffix.

Adding the suffix -er to verbs

If the verb you are adding -er to already ends in an e, you just need to add the r to it.

Adding the suffix -er to verbs

If the verb you are adding -er to ends with a consonant and then a y, you need to change it. The y is taken out

and replaced with an i. Then add -er. If it ends with a vowel and a y, just add -er.

The easiest way to write a kenning poem about a subject is to begin with making a list of nouns and

verbs which are linked to your subject.

Let’s write a kenning poem about a

computer. What nouns and verbs can you think of to do with

computers?

Think, pair, share…

ComputerNouns Verbs

Now, choose a noun and an -er

noun to join, using a hyphen, which

describes the subject. Each pair you make, is one line of your poem! Remember, as this is poetry, you can bend the rules with

words to make them fit your

poem.

If you keep the title a secret, the class can

try to guess the subject of the poem.
