President’s Message

To mention the obvious, Dr . Josh Wren’s lecture was well received . He made the subject of Pediatric

Dentistry sound compelling, doable and worthwhile . This made his lecture easy to listen to and I am the better for it .

My respects and congratulations go to our Iowa members who demonstrated

their commitment and willingness to dentistry by attending a jointly sponsored course with the Nebraska AGD in Omaha . It was Nebraska’s own AGD Fall Meeting . Yes, there were a few football jabs too . These attendees received 12 lecture hours and 12 participation hours in the newly required disciplines of Orofacial Pain and Sedation .

If I know our Iowa AGD members, there is a striving for excellence, and we offer a practical way for our members to increase their knowledge base and skills with quality CE . The local classes are convenient, and a good value for the cost . That’s probably one good reason why you sign up for the AGD—thank you! Now it’s time to sign up for the Iowa AGD Annual Meeting! It will be held on March 2-4, 2018; Dr . Bob Margeas will be our featured speaker, aligning our operative skills to aim for perfection .

I attended the (national) AGD Fall House of Delegates Meeting held in Chicago the first weekend of November, regarding governance-related aspects of the AGD .

Throughout the winter, we are also visiting the UI College of Dentistry to speak over the lunch hour to ASDA students about practice management! What a great way to introduce the students to the AGD .

Did you also know that the AGD has updated their website? On the website, www .agd .org, you can get 6 free live webinars per year, and stay updated on the Annual Scientific Session, which will be in New Orleans on June 7-9, 2018 . If you’ve never gone, you should really look through the courses, for starters, to see the great speakers and topics that are offered every year . Advanced rate for AGD Members is only $199 .

Are you pushing forward? Are you content with life, but want to advance your career? Education is your key . I want to point you toward the Iowa Mastertrack, a 6-year program that you can sign up for at any time (open enrollment) . It’s $16,000 and covers over 600 CE hours, which gets you the hours needed for Fellowship, and also the participation hours needed for Mastership .

Predictable Porcelain Veneers Porcelain veneers can be the strongest restoration in dentistry or the weakest . The treatment planning and preparation design makes all the difference . Bonding to enamel is the most predictable and best way to creating longevity when dealing with porcelain veneers . This hands-on course will allow you to create beautiful restorations without destroying tooth structure . Preparation design will be shown in detail step-by-step . Adhesive protocols for optimum results will be discussed . With over 25 years of experience dealing with porcelain veneers, Dr . Margeas will give you insight on how to prevent failures .

Learning Objectives Participants will prepare 6 anterior teeth

for porcelain veneers . Bonding of a veneer will be demonstrated . Understand how to treat the surface of the

restoration for optimum results . Clinical Cases will be shown step-by-step .

Creating Natural Looking Teeth with Composite ResinsThis hands-on course is designed for today’s esthetically minded, real world dentist and staff who need to be efficient to be profitable . Numerous cases utilizing direct composite resin will be shown step by step . These include class IV restorations, diastema closure, and direct veneers . You will gain an understanding of resins that can offer an alternative procedure to porcelain . The techniques are minimally invasive, yet highly esthetic and long lasting . The hands-on portion will consist of creating a direct composite veneer that can rival a porcelain veneer, creating an invisible class IV restoration, and performing a diastema closure . This interactive course is done in a step-by-step manner utilizing a visualizer, so that

the participants can watch every aspect of the procedure and then create their own composite masterpiece .

Learning Objectives Learn a free hand technique for direct

composites . Layering of composites for natural esthetics

will be shown live . Finishing and polishing techniques that can

mimic nature .

Posterior Composite RestorationThis hands-on portion will allow participants to create a class 2 composite restoration using a section matrix system that will insure a tight posterior contact virtually 100% of the time . Sensitivity issues will be addressed and different composite systems will be discussed .

Learning Objectives Learn how to use sectional matrices . Learn how to prevent post op sensitivity . Which adhesive systems work best .

Worn Dentition and Immediate Provisionalization of Implants Participants will create composite resin overlays to treat the wear patients who cannot afford to have a full mouth

reconstruction all at once . The technique will allow patients to stage cases over a period of years . Understanding how to alter the vertical dimension will be discussed . Silicone die material will be used along with a novel clear pvs to fabricate them .

Learning Objectives Learn how to handle immediate

provisionalization of an implant in the anterior maxilla .

Participants will create a screw retained provisional on an immediate placed implant .

Learn a thorough understanding of when and how to handle the situation will be discussed .

As I type this message, the weather has

certainly changed and we had snow yesterday AND I am listening to Christmas music . Yep, you heard me right…Christmas music! October has been a whirlwind of activities and lately I’m not sure if I’m coming or

going . Christmas music always helps me relax and puts me in a festive mood . I’m glad the snow didn’t stick because I love these crisp mornings of fall!

And with that being said, we finished our IAGD Fall Mastertrack weekend in Des Moines with Dr . Josh Wren as our featured speaker . The Friday lecture was titled “Pediatric Dental Pearls” . His weekend course covered Pedo and Ortho and the reviews for both were FANTASTIC! Several comments suggested we bring him back again so if you ever have a chance to hear him speak, GO! Comments also included “Best course yet in the Mastertrack” . We also just finished up our joint course in Omaha with the Nebraska

AGD . The weekend fulfilled the 2 new disciplines for Mastership that went into effect in January of 2017; Orofacial Pain and Anesthesia, Pain Management, Sedation and Pharmacology .

Also mark your calendars for March 2-4, 2018 for the IAGD Annual Meeting featuring our very own, Dr . Bob Margeas . He will be talking on Operative Dentistry . If you are interested in attending the weekend course, I strongly encourage you to register early . We have sold out every weekend since we started the Mastertrack . Don’t delay in registering…Plus take advantage of huge membership discounts by registering early . Registration information will be emailed and mailed out in the next few weeks .

On August 10 & 11, 2018, we will also be holding a Regional Fellowship Review Course, again in Omaha . More information will be emailed out in the coming weeks but if you are interested in taking the Fellowship Review Course, let me know .

Our October Mastertrack marks the end for our first class of graduates . I am beaming in pride for all of our doctors as this ends a 5 ½ year journey of continuing education . We celebrated with a party a few weeks ago and had a chance to honor those graduating .

Julie Berger

The Iowa Academy of General Dentistry (IAGD) is recognizing IAGD members in the following

Dentistry … In General articles for receiving their Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) and Mastership in the AGD (MAGD) . The FAGD award is earned by attendance of 500 hours in all disciplines of dentistry, passing an exam, and being an AGD member for 3 years . The MAGD emphasizes practical skills by requiring 400 hands on training hours of the total 1100 hours in all disciplines of dentistry and three more years of membership . The AGD Annual Session Convocation Ceremony was July 15,2017 at the Caesars Palace Conference Center in Las Vegas . In AGD’s 60-plus year history 16,525 members have earned their FAGD and 3,334 have received their MAGD . In 2017, 281 members attained FAGD awards, and 99 were MAGD award recipients . These individuals represent a commitment to lifelong learning and support of the AGD’s Mission “to serve the needs and to represent the interests of general dentists and to foster their continued proficiency through quality continuing education in order to better serve the public .”

IN HIS OWN WORDS Dennis Yossi, DDS, MAGDHow lucky we are to have chosen dentistry as a career path . Little did I realize that 39 years after graduating from the Iowa College of Dentistry, that I would be enjoying the profession as much as I do today!

I believe a big reason for this passion I have, is due to my involvement with the Academy of General Dentistry .

Early in my career, I met several dentists who were deeply involved with the IAGD, and was impressed with their love for dentistry . They tirelessly taught me a lot about running a dental practice and serving our

patients better . They encouraged me to do MORE .

Soon, I too became involved with the IAGD and started working through all the chairs, eventually becoming president of the IAGD .

I totally became a C .E “junky-dental-geek” (If that is a word?) I quickly earned my Fellowship Award, and found dentistry was becoming more and more rewarding . I discovered more techniques, technologies and better ways to solve patient’s problems .

Going through the Mastertrack Program has taken my practice to a whole new level . Preparing for and the giving a personal presentation of your office assignment to your study group can be intimidating for sure, but it is my opinion one of the best ways to learn .

I absolutely loved it, and would not have traded it for anything .

I have met many great people from across the country, several becoming very good friends . These are outstanding individ-uals have at times been great mentors to me personally . Likewise, I have become a mentor for others .

Along the way, I realized how much fun you can have in dentistry, if you develop a real passion for it, and truly want to serve others to the best of your abilities . I also realized that seldom is there a boring day, as every day

is exciting and challenging in new and differ-ent ways .

Somedays, however, you find out you still don’t know everything, or know you can do something better… . And back to class you go!

Thanks for being there, Iowa Academy of General Dentistry!

Yours For Better Dentistry (YFBD)Dennis Yossi, DDS, MAGD

Brad Richtsmeier, DDS, FAGDBrad Richtsmeier DDS, FAGD is from Cedar Falls, Iowa and attended Cedar Falls public schools graduating in 1999 . Dr . Richtsmeier graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2003 with a degree in Biology

and Chemistry . Dr . Richtsmeier crossed paths with my daughter Rachel in undergraduate anatomy class, partners in dissecting a cat . After relating to her about my interview with Dr . Richtsmeier, she told me that even then she saw his gift in surgery .

Dr . Richtsmeier was a scholarship foot-ball athlete . He explained, “I was a receiver, and those four years as a college athlete felt more like an obligation . Dental college was much better than that for me .” He told me that he grew to love academics and got to know colleagues who were like-committed to the dental profession . After graduating from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 2007 he joined a group private practice in WDM, and now he and his wife Mindy Richtsmeier, DDS own their own sole propri-etorship called APEX DENTAL at the same location . He said, “The autonomy of owning my own business has made it possible to take care of my patients the best way possible .” Dr . Richtsmeier said that his continuing educa-tion interests helped to define what he did the best, and the surgical training in both implant placement and third molar surgery made him well versed and confident in oral surgery . In athletic terms, he said, “Implant placement and third molar removal cross-train naturally . For example, bone preservation, guided sur-gery, and knowing where the IAN is located is key in both implants and third molar removal surgeries .”

I liked how he described the restorative component as the arts and crafts of dentistry, in which he said Dr . Mindy Richtsmeier excels . Dr . Brad Richtsmeier said that he is certified to administer moderate sedation, another education achievement .

Dr . Brad and Mindy attended the Convocation ceremony, and he told me that

he sat next to a general dentist from Kuwait, who was receiving his FAGD . This dentist displayed uncommon commitment to his education to come to the USA for his dental continuing education . This Kuwait dentist teaches at a dental college back home, and takes what he has learned and shares it with his students there . Dr . Brad was glad to hear that the AGD has an international presence . Dr . Brad said that he and Dr . Mindy both attended an endodontic class while at the AGD Annual session .

Both Drs . Brad and Mindy Richtsmeier have philanthropic dental outreaches to a Veterans organization, and they have been in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic and Jamaica . They also participate in the Iowa Wellness Dental Program, explaining that the public doesn’t know the philanthropic contributions the profession makes . Dr . Brad Richtsmeier had so many good things to say, that I hope my AGD colleagues will make a point to get to know him as a Fellow in the AGD .

IN HIS OWN WORDS Jeffrey D. Joiner, DDS, FAGD

Seventeen years! That’s all it took to finally com-plete the process for the FAGD . As a graduate of the University of Iowa dental school class of 2000, I began my

career in northwest Iowa opening a scratch practice in Orange City that October . In an unwise decision, I didn’t maintain my mem-bership in the AGD for the first several years of practice; a decision I regret now as many hours of CE did not count toward achieving the FAGD and potentially a future MAGD . But the past is the past!

My journey to the award was purely a desire to grow in my practice and improve my skills . I have been blessed that my wife Kay has always been supportive of my pursuit of continuing education, even excited when it involved Florida, Arizona or Hawaii during the cold Iowa months and she would travel along . The extreme example was hauling our 4 month old twins (Courtney and Tara) to the ADA meeting in Orlando back in 2004 . I’ve also made a point to include our staff in this as we have taken them to the ADA meet-ing every other year for the past 14 years . It has been a financial investment, but a good reward for hard work and an opportunity to expand our knowledge and connections from our small corner of Iowa .

As an endurance athlete (or old guy who

Nick’s Rolling Hills Dental Clinic in Fort Dodge . Dr . Nick attended a number of one hour lectures while at the annual session which he enjoyed .

Dr . Nicholas Drzycimski has recently served four years on the initial IDA Annual Session Standing Committee and worked with Dr . Chris Bogue as Exhibitors Co-Chairs .

IAGD Editor, Jon Hardinger, DDS, MAGD

Chadwin J. Wagener, DDS, MAGDDr . Wagener received his MAGD at the 2017 AGD annual session . I was astonished to find that Dr . Wagener received his FAGD only two years ago . He explained that he had accumulated a large number of hours over his

FAGD requirements, then mapped out with the IAGD’s executive director, Julie Berger, a path to fulfill the MAGD’s requirements for hands on classes and the presentation of his cases . For comparison, it was ten years between my FAGD and MAGD, therefore I write of my respects and add hearty congratu-lations for Dr . Wagener’s accomplishment .

I interviewed Dr . Wagener as he drove back to Ankeny from his one day a month (Friday) adjunct faculty position in the Operative Dentistry Department at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry . He confirmed what I heard Dr . Meredith say about training dental students to recognize the clinical terms of soft and hard dentin, instead of the abstract concept of infected and affected dentin . Dr . Wagener not only keeps up his clinical skills, but he also has served organized dentistry by going through the chairs in the DM District Dental Society and the IAGD . I was at an IAGD Board meeting in 2014 when Dr . Wagener made his heart-felt appeal for dentists to attend the IMOM . Dr . Wagener, who is a tall man, stood on his chair to speak on behalf of the IMOM effort .

Dr . Wagener’s parents, R .J . and Sandy, came west to the convocation, and Dr . Wagener included his dental office staff in the event . He explained that the ceremony went very well . His entire office staff stayed at a Las Vegas Hotel where they feature a large Ferris Wheel at the LINQ Hotel, which stands 540 feet high and turns slowly, like the hour hand on a clock . In other activities he and his dad endured a very hot day (119 degrees) hiking through the Red Rock Canyon .

In our visit Dr . Wagener told me that among many AGD colleagues, he pointed to the AGD Regional Director, Dr . Mark will start a term as RD with the AGD in late 2017 .

likes to think of himself as an athlete), it is fitting I would take the long route and spend 17 years before claiming the FAGD award . The last couple of years I’ve put more effort into online learning rather than travel as my free time has been focused on training for Ironman triathlons . I’m thankful for the health to complete an Ironman in each of the past three years .

For anyone reading this that is on the fence whether to complete the FAGD pro-cess, I would highly recommend it . The prep course for the exam and studying was a great refresher to the current state of dentistry in all aspects . The connections made in courses and the award ceremony also make it a worthwhile endeavor .

Married to Kay and rais-ing 13 year old twins, Tara and Courtney. He is Involved in many church activities and leadership as well as a bit of triathlon training to relieve the stress of running a practice and raising teenage daughters.

Nicholas J. Drzycimski, DDS, MAGD

Nicholas J . Drzycimski, DDS, MAGD of Fort Dodge was recog-nized at the AGD Annual Session Convocation on July 15th at Caesars Palace Convention

Center . He was delighted that his dental col-league daughter, Maria accompanied him to the Annual Session .

Dr . Drzycimski credited the IAGD Executive Director, Julie Berger, who pulled him aside at an IDA meeting once and said, “You can get your Mastership .” He explained that he had plenty of hours . . . attending classes and teaching with Dr . Gordon Christensen’s PCC in Provo, Utah . He added, “Because of this I missed being involved locally .” However, Julie helped him sign up for removable prosthetics with Dr . Joseph Massad, and endodontics with Dr . Richard Mounce offered locally and with courses in pedodontics and orthodontics he completed the requirements for the MAGD .

Dr . Drzycimski was telling me about his plans to go to Las Vegas with his wife and family, but his oldest daughter, Julia, announced in December that their first grandchild was on the way in July! Congratulations for that too Nick! Dr . Maria Drzycimski is a 2016 Creighton University School of Dentistry graduate and is with Dr .

Dr. Joiner with his twins Courtney and Tara.

“Pediatric Dental Pearls” Friday of MasterTrack Weekend

Friday Recognition Event

The title of Dr Josh Wren’s presentation

title included the word “Pearls” and this caught my attention as I start to write about his presentation to the Iowa Academy of General Dentistry . This article will

start with a comment about pearls in his lecture, and end describing the MasterTrack recognition .

As my readers know, a pearl is unique because it is naturally made, and as far back as my reading of ancient cultures, pearls are held in high esteem for decoration and recognition . We have all heard how the oyster makes the pearl because of an irritant, and covers it with an admired and classic decoration . No wonder that Dr . Josh Wren used this to describe his presentation about Pediatric Dentistry . His personality tracked as one who had taken many children under his care, and I could tell that he really liked these little people; however, the necessity of preventing, guiding and managing the people who have this disease process is the irritant which I felt he covered like an oyster’s best work .

To continue the analogy, the pearl we normally see is “pearl white,” but there are other colors too, and Dr . Wren made a point to talk about all aspects of Pediatric Dentistry from Guiding Behavior, Prevention, Restorative Care, and he also told us what not to do . For example, he showed us examples of failing work, next to dental restorative care that was successful .

He personally went to three company

headquarters for the products that he uses every day . The first being the HuFriedy Company in Chicago, which makes primary tooth forceps and stainless steel crowns . Their representative, Ronda Anderson, was there and her company helped sponsor the program . Secondly, He also talked about Pulp Dent in Watertown, MA where they make a catalyst base restorative material, Activa . Third, the 3M Company in MN, whose products, like Scotchbond Universal Adhesive are well-known to us .

I think he was surprised to hear of the audience interest in Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) therapy for rampant decay . The audience questions included giving the general dentist another tool to help geriatric patients who have root decay . He said that in his office he makes a one-time non-refundable charge for trying this therapy, and his protocol is to see them once when the medicine is rubbed into the decayed area for one minute and coats this with fluoride varnish, then this is repeated two weeks later, and at 6 month intervals until no longer needed . He said that he placed the SDF on his arm, elbow, and hand and observed that the stain lingered three to five days .

This subject was discussed among us, and Dr . Wren invited a full professor of Operative Dentistry in attendance, Dr . Patricia Meredith, to address decay removal . She basically explained that the department teaches a practical way of saying affected and infected dentin, rather firm and soft dentin respectively . She also said that unsupported enamel is removed in the preparation . Her comments are video recorded on the IAGD Facebook colleague invitation page .

Dr . Wren used a Charlie Brown and Snoopy cartoon to make a point about living well . The characters are seen from their back

side sitting together and facing a horizon of water . Charlie Brown says,” You know, Snoopy, some day we are all going to die .” Snoopy replies, “Yes, and all the other days we don’t .”

He showed a picture of a beautiful sunset sky he learned to appreciate as he drove home and focused on that instead of office concerns . One way he covers his communication commitments is to document that post-operative instructions are given (POIG) to a named person, so that the office knows who was informed . This helps to prevent complaints from a person who was not informed by the person whom he told post-operative instructions to .

I also appreciated the way he guided patients into a good dental experience with planned outcomes, such as counting the bubbles in the retraction lighted suction device (Iso Light, Dry Shield Etc .) and awarding a prize for cooperation . He also pre planned a broken stick to show a good bite effort in seating their SSC . My favorite euphemism he used was the water whistle for the dental handpiece . He pre guided the child to experience the sour taste of local anesthetic calling it sour water . Their office uses cordless prophy angles as a convenience for themselves and to allow the patient to hold it for teaching oral hygiene .

Dr . Wren has his staff write in the chart a scoring level for behavior called Frankel Behavior Management and the scale is lowest at zero and highest at 4 for optimum cooperation . Dr . Wren told us about a compound pharmacy that made topical anesthetic, preceding his injection technique . He said that he weighs every child in order to calculate their maximum allowable dosage of medications .

My favorite colloquial expression I heard him say after guiding a patient through their appointment was that they think you have “Hung the Moon!” To me this meant an ultimate compliment because only the Creator could hang the moon in the sky, not bad to be said of a mortal . During the presentation Dr . Wren discussed Hall

Crowns, MTA success, and Zirconia Pediatric Crowns . I saw several in the audience following along Dr . Wren’s PowerPoints, or their PDF equivalent, available for all course participants .

The MasterTrack reception was held at the downtown West End Salvage, a most enjoyable evening . For starters, we had a theme of New Orleans Style appetizers that were served by Greta Lange Catering . I struck up a conversation with a staff member, Jeremy, who was preparing the shrimp and oysters on the half shell . He explained that these oysters were in Cape Cod Bay this (Friday) morning, and he

was showing me how he pried open the shell’s door and presented this delicacy on ice for a special appetizer . This was a serendipitous moment to be looking for real pearls along with the recognition of many MasterTrack Pearl moments earned over the past 5 years . Julie expressed her pride in the achievement of each doctor’s goal, as if a mother were cheering for her family . A DVD was shown and given to each MasterTrack participant, and several spoke of the success of the program and their hope that it would continue .

The Iowa Dental Board met

on Friday, October 13 . The meeting was well attended due to the topic of specialty designa-tion in advertising . The public attendees included members of

the orthodontic profession and legal advi-sors, members of the oral surgery profession, Iowa Dental Association and legal advisor, Iowa Department of Public Health, and Delta Dental of Iowa .

A recent court case in Texas ruled against the Texas dental board regarding advertis-ing . The Texas dental board deferred to the American Dental Association’s recogni-tion of nine dental specialties . The ruling was challenged by the American Board of Dental Specialties (ABDS) . The ABDS is a certifying board for other dental specialties notably the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, American Society of Dental Anesthesiologists, American Academy of Oral Medicine, and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain . The court ruled that the Texas dental board may not limit specialty designation in advertising .

The Iowa Dental Board (IDB) is try-ing to develop rules that recognize dental specialties without conflicting with legal statute . There was discussion and recognition that other criteria may be used to determine specialty designation . There well prepared statements from the specialty representatives regarding the established credibility of the

ADA’s recognition of specialty designation . Interestingly, a representative from the Iowa Medical Board stated that the medical board does not regulate specialty advertising .

The IDB deferred the issue to the January meeting to allow time for more input from interested parties and more time for IDB evaluation . Dentists who are interested and concerned about specialty designation are urged to contact the IDB .

The IDB new website has been established . It is user friendly with good information about the board . Please use the website as a resource for dental board activi-ties . The board was pleased to see an increase in the number of online license renewals . Online license renewals require less time, less effort, and are more accurate .

The use of silver diamine fluoride as a preventive treatment by dental hygienists will be considered by a committee . The commit-tee will prepare a recommendation for the dental board at a future meeting .

There were multiple rules voted for approval . Notably the following rules were approved .

For moderate and deep sedation pro-viders the requirement for capnography monitoring during sedation was approved . Beginning January 1, 2018 all moderate and deep sedation providers must use capnogra-phy monitoring .

Educational services may be provided by a hygienist without dentist supervision .

The portfolio examination for an Iowa dental license was approved .

Beginning in September 2018 all dental licensees will be required to have continuing education in infection control and in Iowa

jurisprudence . One hour credit in each topic will be required . This rule includes dentists .

There was further discussion on multiple other issues . A committee to discuss and evaluate expanded functions will be formed . The committee will consider changes to the expanded functions for level one and level two expanded function providers .

Public health supervision rules allow-ing a hygienist to work as an assistant will be reviewed . Permanent address for notifica-tion by the dental board will be determined . Testing boards CRDT, NERB, and WREB will be reviewed to determine consistency in testing board requirements . An opioid task force committee will be formed to determine a policy for opioid prescription .

In the future the dental board meetings will be on Fridays . Hopefully, this will allow more dental practitioners to attend . Also, beginning in 2018, there will be six meetings per year .

In 2018, the IDB is going to have more meetings and go to one-day meetings . Future meeting dates:

January 25, 2018April 6, 2018June 8, 2018August 2, 2018September 28, 2018November 16, 2018

The next board meeting is January 25, 2018 . Please, please consider attending a dental board meeting . This is our profession so please stay involved . The dental board appreciates the opinions and comments of the dental providers .

Editor’s Report

As the Iowa Academy of General (IAGD) Editor I attended the AADEJ annual

session on October 17-18 in Atlanta . Let me explain to my IAGD readers why I find this voluntary meeting so valuable to my work as Editor of our Dentistry … In General.

Because I assumed this work from predecessors Dr . Bill Kuttler and Dr . Paul Readhead, who established our Iowa newsletter, it is natural for me to keep the publication going strong . Of course, I am interested in content but also the various aspects of presenting a publication that is used by our members . I observe that although the term of service on the IAGD Board is two years, I have served for about 30 years, and to my surprise this is not uncommon in the newsletter and journal community .

There are a few long serving outstanding editors I would like to recognize like Dr . Dan Jenkins, the editor for the AADEJ’s own The Communicator, and who teaches photography tips in both the newsmagazine and in this session . I also liked the refresher on editing and proof reading in The Communicator by last year’s president of the AADEJ, Dr . Virginia Merchant . Then there

is my personal favorite, Dr . Eric Curtis, whom I met while on the AGD Communications Council, who contributed an article about metaphors in the magazine’s current issue . Now, all these individuals have meaning to me because I know them and it makes reading their articles more interesting . There is no commodity value that could pay

for these relationships, which are gotten by attending these meetings regularly . Our own AGD Editor, Dr . Roger Winland,

was at the meeting and I gave him a tip to write an article for AGD IMPACT about the QSEHRA that I wrote about last issue because several doctors said it benefited their practice .

This year our meetings had the ADA’s Manager of Social Strategy, Shanna Quinn, talk about Instagram for organizations, and one highlight of ADA’s Jane Grover’s talk was about hospital emergency departments who are connecting with and then

referring dental patients to local dentists, and providing a community grant for them to afford to take care of Medicaid patients . The ADA’s highest-ranking officers, Dr . Joseph Crowley, Dr . Gary Roberts, and Dr . Kathleen O’Loughlin participated in a panel discussion about top issues, and during one part of their talk I felt

knowledgeable enough to tell them about the Iowa Board’s response to constitutional challenges to ADA exclusively listing dental specialties . (This is because of our legislative chair’s comments at our IAGD Board meeting .)

There were two top notch academic presentations from the University of Georgia on journalism . The first was John Peters, JD, Ph .D . on libel, and the second was Journalism professor, Ann Hollifield, Ph .D . who talked on the subject of plagiarism . A frequent presenter to our group was the JADA Editor, Dr . Michael Glick, talking about discerning useful dental literature .

Our Wednesday luncheon speaker, Jessica Vanlanduyt, presented the historical setting for Margaret Mitchell’s one and only well-known novel, “Gone With The Wind .” This was a perfect subject for a group of aspiring writers . Jessica was telling how Margaret was goaded into submitting her book for publication in about 1935 . Margaret had gone to a publisher’s outreach for writers, and initially she flatly refused to even acknowledge the existence of her work on a novel . Except, on her way home, a fellow writer said, “I take it you just don’t consider yourself a serious writer .” These words, according to Jessica, were fighting words to Margaret and she brought her secret 1037-page manuscript to this publisher and said, “Here is “Gone With The Wind,” take it before I change my mind .” Now, if I had those magic words spoken to me,

he spoke I got excited to hear him compare the way he adapted to changing publication trends . As the CDA was reorganized into the Provinces who established continuing education meetings and activities, he was left to gather professional literature . He said, “That although the emphasis obviously was going to local Provinces in the respective south of

Canada, “the gold (of literature) was in the north,” where the CDA was located .” Dr . John O’Keefe is now in the process of writing a book about his life in dental publications and organizations that keep the campfires burning . He highly regarded using ZOOM video conferencing for meetings . This inexpensive monthly-fee software allows him to invite participants to choose how they listen, via phone, tablet, or video camera PC, yet fully participate in a virtual group .

The meetings were held at the Atlanta Hilton and directly preceded the ADA Annual Session nearby .

holding back my masterpiece, you bet I would get motivated to publish!

I read several of the various award winners of the Wm F Gies Award . The International College of Dentists also gave awards at this meeting . One particular, The Northwest, a component of the Minnesota Dental Association, was recognized .

This year I met a new colleague and it was as if I had known him my whole life . He spoke warmly and enthusiastically about his career in dental publications . His vision is that there are two kinds of publications represented by News Magazines and by Journals . His mission therefore at the Canadian Dental Association (CDA) was to keep alive the publication of quality useful research to time starved professionals, as well as maintain a circle of collegiality . He entitled his presentation “From Lighthouse to Campfire,” which speaks to shining out professional knowledge and gathering warm relationships . As
