This village is noted for its production of lime-stone, peculiarly adapted for agricultural purposes, and which having the advantage of a contiguous navigable conveyance, it is sent for that purpose to all the surrounding counties. pulation 243. It was at the conquest, the estate of Edward, Earl of Mercia, who, en-deavouring to assist his brother Earl Morcar, was slain, and his lands forfeited to the crown. The hall here was the seat of the Withams, for divers successions, till Henry Witham, Esq. sold it to Sir Thomas Went-worth, afterwards Earl of Strafford, who made it a stately mansion: his son William sold it to Sir John Lewis, who made great improvements in the house, gardens and park; from whose family it passed by mar-riage to that of Hastings, Earls of Hunting-ton, and thence to that of Rawden, Earls of Moira. On the 20th of September, 1806, their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and Duke of Clarence, with their suite, arrived at Ledstone, on a visit to Michael Angelo Taylor, Esq. then residing there. Christopher Wilson, Esq. is the present occupier of the hall. Ledsham and Ledstone are adjoining hamlets, the family mansion, as has been de-scribed, is at the latter, and the parish church at the former. The church is chiefly remark-able as the place of interment of Lady Eliz. Hastings, of pious memory. A stately monument, afterwards augmented by the statues of her two sisters, records, in elegant Latin, the character of this ornament to her sex.-Her own figure is placed on a sarcophagus reclining, and reading a book of devotion, and the countenance, which is a portrait, handsome and spirited. This parish is situated on the Calder, and commands extensive views along its picturesque banks. Anciently, it was the seat of the knightly family of the Thornhills, who intermarried with the De Fixbys, in the reign of our first Edward. Afterwards, namely, in the year 1404, the Thornhills became united with the Saviles, of Dodsworth, near Barnsley.—These families have for ages been amongst the leading persons in their native county, and have served at intervals in successive generations, the office of Sheriffs and Representatives for Yorkshire. Early in the16th
