Libero – specializes in defense. The

libero can substitute in at any time, and wears an opposite colored jersey so the referee can easily track his position. Liberos have quick reaction time and excellent passing and defensive skills.

Middle Hitter — performs very fast

attacks that usually take place near the setter. The middle hitter act as the teams’ primary blocker and hits from the middle of the court. Middle hitters are a major key to a team's defense.

Opposite — plays opposite the setter.

The opposite is responsible for blocking the opponent's outside hitter, he's solid blocker as well as a good hitter. The opposite also passes, sets, and has great ball handling skills.

Outside Hitter – a great all-

around player. The outside hitter will pass, serve, receive, and swing out to hit the ball with an approach coming from the outside of the court. Outside hitters have excellent ball control and passing abilities.

Setter - manages the offense. The setter is

the backbone of the offense and makes split-second decisions about who gets the ball when. Setters are very athletic quick, skillful and accurate.

VOLLEYBALL GLOSSARY: Ace: A serve that directly scores a point. Block: (or “roof”) A spiked ball blocked into the opponents court Free Ball: A ball that will be returned by a pass rather than a spike Dig: A spiked ball returned

THE GAME

The indoor game of volleyball is played by two teams of six players on a court divided by a net. The goal is to send the ball over the net and on to the ground of your opponent’s court. Teams are allowed to hit the ball three times. The block does not count as one of the contacts. The rally continues until the ball touches the floor, goes out of bounds (a ball touching the line is “IN”), or a player commits a fault. The right back player initiates play with a serve. The serve may touch the net. Using rally scoring, whichever team wins the rally is awarded the point. Games are played to 25 points and you must win by a margin of two points to win the game. High School matches are decided by the best 3 out of 5 (below varsity level matches are determined by the best 2 of 3). If a tie breaker is played, the game is played to 15.

Volleyball ranks second (behind soccer) in participation sports; 46 million Americans play volleyball and 800 million people play worldwide at least once a week.

Most volleyball players jump about 300 times per match.

The standard net height for men’s volleyball is 7’ 11 5/8”

A regulation volleyball weighs right around 10oz...a standard basketball weighs in at 22oz, but a volleyball would still win in a fistfight!
