Year-round camping, fi shing, picnicking, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities make Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area a popular place. This 800-acre, cool, country recreation area with a 150-acre lake offers 92 hookup sites and 31 non-hookup sites.

The tiny town of Adair has long since been covered by the lake, but it was Thomas Jefferson Adair who was responsible for the name Fool Hollow. In 1885, Adair moved into the area with the intention of farming. The locals joked that only a fool would try and farm the place. The name stuck!

This state-of-the-art recreation area, located in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, opened in 1994 as a result of an innovative partnership between Arizona State Parks, the U.S. Forest Service, Arizona Game and Fish, the City of Show Low, and corporate sponsors Arizona Public Service and McCarty Construction Company.

Day Use RamadasFive Day Use Ramadas are available for your event. Each Ramada has picnic tables, a large charcoal grill (use contingent on fi re restrictions), a serving table, electricity (15 amp service), a horseshoe pit and restrooms. Two playgrounds are centrally located. Day Use hours are 8 am to 8 pm. Ask at the Ranger Station or call (928) 537-3680.

Park RulesHelp us protect this beautiful area. Please familiarize yourself with the park rules:

• Fees are due upon entering the park.

• Camp only in designated sites.

• No saving or reserving campsites. You must physically occupy a site.

• Camping fees are charged per vehicle and not per site; a tow-vehicle is excluded.

• 2 vehicles (maximum) per site.• 6 adults (maximum) per site.• Quiet hours are from 8 pm to 7 am.• Vehicles are restricted to paved roads;

no going “off-road.”• All vehicles must be “street legal”

and registered to operate in the park, including ATVs, side by sides, motorcycles and specialty vehicles.

• No vehicle washing.• Please keep pets leashed and clean up

after them.• No glass containers are allowed in park.• No generators.• No ground fi res in day use area. • Campfi res are restricted to fi re rings,

kept small, attended at all times and thoroughly doused when done.

• Charcoal only in grills. Check with ranger or campground host for current fi re restrictions.

• “Red Flag” may preclude all wood and charcoal fi res. Look for fl ags or check with a ranger or host.

• No chopping of trees for fi rewood. This includes dead/downed trees and snags.

• Boat motors limited to 10 horsepower.• All state laws regarding boating and

fi shing apply.• Damaging or removing the natural

rocks, vegetation, artifacts or public property is against the law.

• This area contains many natural hazards; enjoy the park with caution.

• Please do not feed the animals.

Wildlife ViewingStay alert: Poisonous snakes and insects inhabit the area. Do not feed the animals and store all foodstuffs in secure containers or in your vehicles.

Waterfowl: (viewing varies with time of year) Mallards, Canada geese, various species of divers & dabblers, Great Blue Heron, Snowy Egret, American Egret, White-faced Ibis.

Neo-Tropical and Passerine species: (viewing varies with time of year) Stellar’s Jay, Lesser Goldfi nch, numerous species of Bluebirds, Acorn Woodpeckers, Nuthatches and Red-shafted Flicker.

Raptors: Bald Eagle (winter), Osprey (summer), American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, Goshawk, and Red-Tailed Hawk.

Common Mammals: Eberts Squirrels, Rock Squirrel, Gophers, Skunk, Raccoon, Beaver and Muskrat. Sightings of Elk, Bobcat, Coyote and Deer are not uncommon.

Snakes include the Western Diamondback.

AmphitheaterThe Amphitheater & Intrepretive Area is located between the no hook up camping loops and the RV loops. Weather permitting, join us for an interpretive program. Ask in the Ranger Station about current programs; topics include Smokey Bear, elk, wildfi re, birds, or special programs.

FishingShow Low Creek fl ows into Fool Hollow Lake, providing a natural feeding ground for a variety of wildlife and a very diverse fi shery. There are six fi shing platforms around the lake. There are two fi sh cleaning stations at the park. Fishing opportunities are abundant with rainbow trout, large and small mouth bass, black crappie, green sunfi sh, channel catfi sh, Walleye and northern pike are all present in the lake.

A valid Arizona fi shing license is required for anglers 10 years and older. Licensing information is available online at Arizona Game & Fish, or purchase a fi shing license at a local dealer. All Arizona boating laws apply, including PFDs, other safety equipment, registration, etc.

TrailsA 1.5 mile walking trail runs along the south and west sides of the lake. The White Mountain Trail System consists of 11 loop trails offering over 103 miles of hiking. Access points are located within 15 miles of the recreation area in the adjacent Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Phone (928) 368-5111.
