Message from Ranae Frazier, General Manager
The Annual Meeting will be held at Riverside Church on April 13, 2017 at 10:00
a.m. On Tuesday, March 7th, all members will be mailed the second notice of the
Annual Meeting. There were four (4) open seats on the Board of Directors. There were
four candidates that placed their name into nomination for the Board of Directors: Jeff
Brick, Kathy Cummings, John Thomas, and Dave Warren. There will not be a need to
vote for the Board of Directors as only four candidates submitted their nomination. I am
including the candidates information in the March 7th mailing.
There are three (3) open positions for the Golf Committee. The candidates who
have placed their names into nomination for the Golf Committee are: Mike Cautin, Bill
Hoffman, Jean Murphy, Joe Petrone, and Ed Shaw.
The Candidates Forum will be held in the Activities Room on Monday, March 6th
at 4 p.m. Each candidate running for the Golf Committee will be given an opportunity to
make an opening statement of no more than five minutes, if desired, although such
statements are not obligatory. All candidates will be asked to respond to questions from
the membership during the forum. Questions may be submitted in writing in advance,
submitted in writing during the forum, or presented live from the floor during the forum.
All questions submitted in writing in advance or during the forum must be signed by the
submitting member.
Our Association’s governing documents require that a quorum of the members is
needed in order to hold our annual meeting and election. The Association’s By-Laws
provides that a quorum shall be established by the presence, in person or by proxy. A
quorum is at least 258 members, one member per household. To establish a quorum in
advance, please sign and return your proxy that will be included in your March 7th mailing.
If a quorum is not received, we will have no choice but to adjourn and re-notice the
meeting at a later date.
Questions asked this week:
Question: I was unable to see the Powerhouse performance “A Night at the Opera”.
Can they do another performance? Answer: Yes. The performance will be appearing at
the Bell Tower Shops on Friday, March 10th at 6 p.m. at the Center Pavilion.
Question: On top of Legends street lights there is a small circular clear lens with
blue on it. What is this? Answer: This is a photo cell. This turns the street lights on and
off.
Question: My husband receives our monthly billing statement by email. I would like
to receive one too. Answer: Multiple emails are now available. If you would like to be
added please let the office know.
Question: When I was at the pool, there were members using the Café tables playing
cards. Is this allowed? Answer: Cards and games should be played in the activities room,
library, or Studio 1. The restaurant facilities should be used for dining.

March 2017 Golf Event Schedule
NOTICE: The Course will be Closed for maintenance on Wednesday 3-15-2017 following Ladies Day.
Congratulations to Joe and Pat Petrone for their victory in the 2017 Husband and Wife Championship. If you
haven’t heard we moved the Putting Contest to Wednesday and we had some new winners this week.
The sign-up for the Club Championship, is in the books, play starts on March 17th and entry fee is $25.00. Call
or stop in to sign up.
The way Chelsea Points are distributed has been changed effective immediately. The following changes were
approved by the Golf Committee at the Jan 18, 2017 meeting.
Players will receive 1 Chelsea Point for all play prior to 4:00. Players will receive ½ of a Chelsea Point for all play
from 4:00 to close. Players used to receive 1 point prior to 2:00 and 0 points from 2:00 to close.
We have added a ”not later than” feature to Chelsea. If you decide to use this feature remember that you are limiting
your tee time window. At Legends we use a “Crossover Tee Time System” to maximize play on Monday, Tuesday
afternoon, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. During Crossovers there are times available between 7:15 and
9:15, 11:45 and 1:45 and from 4:15 – Close. Please be aware of that when using the not earlier or later than option.
Example: If you say I don’t want to play before 9:30 or after 11:30 you will not get a time because there isn’t one
available during the window you have chosen.
Be sure to use Chelsea to make your tee times. Members, your login requires you to enter a Zero (0) your 4
digit member #, and a 1 for male members, a 2 for female members, making it a 6 digit number. (ex. 012341) Renters
already have a 5 digit number so no zero (0) is necessary but you still need the 1 or 2, at the end. (Ex. 712342) First
time users have a default password of 1234.
For those of you that are not aware we have a Hole-In-One club at the Legends. Stop by the Golf Shop for details.
As always, fix those ball marks, fill those divots and keep up with the group in front of you.
Golfingly,
Jeff Sarver, PGA, Head Golf Professional
Reminder: All requests for approval of Intra Club Events must be submitted to the Golf Tournament and Activities
Sub-Committee between March 1st and April 30th of the year prior to when the event is to take place.

Turf Notes
The Handicap committee, together with the league board members, have been reviewing the handicaps of
players who statistically are winning more often than they should, or are scoring lower than would be expected. I would
like to stress that no-one is being accused of cheating or garnishing their handicaps. Causes of these statistical anomalies
can be for several reasons. Players may concentrate more in league play than when they are playing with friends or
spouses, or it may be that course slope and rating does not adequately take into account the different play on Northern
courses as opposed to Legends course. Let’s face it, getting out of the rough is much more difficult on Northern courses.
For the eighteen hole leagues, we have generated a handicap using just league play, and where there is a
significant discrepancy between this and the handicap in the computer, we have made adjustments. For the Nine hole
ladies league, the problems are slightly different, in that it takes forty rounds of nine holes to create a complete change in
the scores considered to calculate a handicap. For them, we entered all of the nine hole rounds on the players scoring
record, and used this to generate a nine hole handicap. Again, when large discrepancies occurred, we adjusted the
players handicap.

Handicap Review
Why guess when you can measure? What I have learned the most over the last decade is how little
understanding there is among golfers regarding how the ball flies. Example: folks think they are hooking the ball
because they are coming over the top. If your ball starts straight and hooks it is because you’re actually swinging too
much inside out. If your ball starts straight and you come over the top, your ball will slice off the planet with a driver.
Folks need to understand that swing path curves the ball—not the club-face! If your ball starts left it is because that is
where the face is pointed at impact. It’s critical to know that the face starts the ball on its journey and your path
provides the curve. Most folks don’t know this. They also have no idea how far they hit their golf clubs. To a degree it
makes sense because we use floater balls on our aqua range. If you hit balls on my machine you use real golf balls. The
diver fetches them a couple times a year.
Spin rate: folks need to know their driver spin rate. If your ball is spinning too much, you’ve got either equipment or
mechanical issues and you’re cheating yourself out of distance and accuracy.
Smash factor: fancy terminology for whether you’re striking your shots in the middle of the club-face. You can’t
diagnose your ball’s curvature without knowing if you’re hitting it off the toe or heel. For right handed swingers who hit
heel shots with driver the ball curves right. Toe shots hook. If you’ve never sprayed the face of your driver with Dr.
Scholl’s foot spray, you are throwing darts at the board hoping one will stick. Again why guess if it’s your swing path
or off-center strike that is causing the ball to curve? It’s 2017 and we can measure!
I don’t use my ten thousand dollar radar device to be overly technical. I use it to make things simple. The last
lesson I had with it I gave a higher handicap sixty yards with his driver by simply aiming his shoulders and hips
different and giving him one swing thought. He went from popping it up to ripping it. There was no need for him to see
the twenty seven parameters the machine measures. That would only provide confusion. I’m here to parse the data and
make things easier. I also provide a catalogue of photos for students detailing where their swing gets out of whack.
Flightscope is great for pitching and chipping too. If you can’t get the ball to hold on the greens you need to
understand what spin loft is. The traditional “chip like you putt” wrist-less motion is not good enough off of Bermuda
grass. In fact you need to use your wrists and utilize the bounce on your wedge when you chip and the ball will check
up like you wouldn’t imagine!
During March and April you can book a ninety minute Flightscope Radar lesson with me for $90. I can
guarantee your weakness will be exposed. More importantly you will do what every serious golfer at any level needs to
do—keep a catalogue of pictures of your swing so you can chart your progress. If you are interested in booking a
session or finding out more information, email me at [email protected] or call me at 239 738 5900. Also
remember if your grandkids come down I have special junior pricing. They receive a significant discount and a video of
their swing.
