Ahhh, is it that time of year? As the roar of race cars speeding around

the oval of a sleek speedway subsides, it will soon be replaced by the

roar of a half-million chrome machines ridden by bikers loving beautiful

weather and black leather.

There’s so much in life vying for our attention: work, relaxation,children, and medical appointments. With that in mind, God made this

the first of his commandments: “Don’t have any other gods.”

I’m not asking whether you have rival gods in your life. I’m assuming

we all have idols hidden in our lives:



It’s anything more important to you than God.

It’s anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than

God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give.

It’s romance, power, health, fitness, success, education, physicalbeauty, etc.

Idols dominate our lives. Our emotions reveal it. What makes us

uncontrollably angry, anxious, or discouraged? What racks us with a

guilt we can’t shake?

Pull your emotions out of the ground and look at their roots. Thereyou will find your idols. Ask yourself:

“Am I scared because something in my life is being threatened

that I think is so necessary for my personal happiness?”

“ Am I driving myself with certain activities so that I can find

fulfillment and significance?”

“Does how I spend my money show my heart’s true love?”

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians

3:2). The season of Lent is a rite of passage. Sunday worship allows us a

chance to catch a glimpse of a beautiful Lord, his determined steps to

the cross, his love for a lost soul like me.

Don’t stop loving your family or work, Speed Week or Bike Week. But

let your heart rest in Christ’s sacrificial, suffering love for you. See what

it cost him to save you from sin.

This Lenten season, spend more time with Jesus Christ, your Savior .
