Leon ComputersFounded in 1993 and headquartered in Pune, India, Leon Computers
Pvt. Ltd off ers infrastructure management, managed services,
consultancy, systems integration and licensing services. The company
expects to achieve certifi cation to the ISO/IEC 20000 Information
Technology Service Management Standard in Q2 2009. A single
datacenter supports Leon Computers’ 140 staff .
Leon Computers found its datacenter’s power and cooling systems
could not continue to meet the demands of eight physical servers,
each with local storage. In addition, backup of applications was taking
more than two days at a time, presenting an unacceptable risk to
business continuity. In early 2008, the company decided to virtualize
its server environment using VMware products. It is now running
nine virtual machines on a single production server, complemented
by one other physical server delivering high availability, as well as
a storage area network. The new infrastructure has enabled Leon
Computers to cut backup windows to two to four hours and reduce
the load on its power and cooling systems by almost one-third. The
infrastructure has also simplifi ed management of applications and
databases and reduced the company’s maintenance task.
Leon Computers has also deployed Check Point VPN-1 VE to provide
the same level of protection to applications running in its virtualized
environment as those running in a physical environment. The solution
also ensures virtualized applications are segregated from each other
as well as external threats, and helps secure remote access to the
Leon Computers infrastructure.
Leon Computers is now preparing to test desktop virtualization based
on VMware View across 30 users by the end of the second quarter of
2009. The organization also plans to implement VMware vCenter Lab
Manager and a Microsoft Dynamics NAV enterprise resource planning
system in its virtualized environment by the end of 2009.
Results • Achieved an 8:1 server consolidation ratio
• Reduced datacenter power and cooling consumption by about 30%
• Improved average CPU utilization from 25% to 70%
• Cut backup windows from more than two days to two to four hours
• Achieved 99.999% uptime
“VMware has enabled us to reduce our environmental footprint by cutting power and cooling consumption as well as allowing us to dramatically improve our backup window, consequently reducing risk and the possibility of human error.”

Reduce risks caused by extensive backups and
cut environmental footprint while improving
infrastructure manageability and flexibility.
S O L U T I O N
VMware virtualization enhances backup
capabilities and timeliness while a reduced
physical infrastructure generates less heat and
fewer CO2 emissions. VMware also enables
centralized management and the allocation of
resources to where they are most needed.
