    Lesson 4

Learning Intention: To identify rhythm in a nursery rhyme

Success Criteria: • I can perform the rhythm

    Activity 1

Using the same nursery rhymes: Hickory, Dickory, Dock and Incy Wincy Spider on pages 7 and 8, you are going to practise performing rhythm.

For this activity, you can clap or tap with your hands. Alternatively, you may also consider using homemade clapping sticks, boxes, household utensils like spoons or chopsticks. You may want to watch the demonstration video How to clap to rhythm before attempting the activity.

Besides coming up with a suitable beat, a songwriter will also have to think of a suitable rhythm for the music. Rhythm is what makes

move or tap our foot, when we listen to a song. Rhythm is made up of sounds and silences. When these sounds and silences are put together, they form patterns of sounds, which are repeated to create rhythm.

being dribbled, raindrops falling, or hands clapping. Watch this video to see how rhythm is created using basketballs and hands.
