Home > Preschool > Lessons > Lesson Guides > Opening Prayer

OPENING PRAYERWorship time is an important part of every lesson, even for preschoolers. It signals that it is time to start the class and endthe arrival activities. Prayer lets the children know it is time to get serious. Second, worship time gives you an opportunityto invite the Holy Spirit to be in control of your class.

The Opening Prayer should always include the following:1. Praise to God for the opportunity to meet and for the attendance of everyone present.2. A request for guidance, especially for the teacher so that the Word of God can be shared in a meaningful way.3. Asking the children to be open to learning the Word of God and to invite the Holy Spirit to be present in botheveryone's heart and in the classroom.

Because you are not as restricted to how much time you have left, the Opening Prayer works best for including prayerrequest and praises. With a new class, the children may not feel comfortable speaking up, but as they get to know eachother they will be more open to sharing praises and prayer requests. Sharing like this can take a while, so it is importantto make sure the kids stay focused on giving only a praise or a prayer request and not to become side-tracked on otherissues. If the class size is very large, you may also want to consider dividing the kids into smaller groups and have prayerled by more than one adult leader or helper.

When including prayer request and praises, always consider the following:1. Ensure everyone has a chance to contribute.2. Rather then trusting your memory, be prepared to jot down what is said.3. Be sure to touch on each child's requests. It is important to them to know that you care about them and that theirprayers are important.4. Make sure special needs of your church or church members are also mentioned.

SHAKY FOUNDATION !We need to build our lives on the solid foundation God provides.

TOPICS:Behavior, Following God, Obedience, Pleasing God

MATERIALS:BlocksCard Table

DURATION:Approximately 10 minutes

WHAT YOU WILL DO:Set up the card table in front of the class and start building a tower using the blocks you brought to class. As you build thetower explain to the children how important it is to have a strong foundation or base for the tower. A wobbly or shakyfoundation will cause our tower to tip over easily, especially as the tower gets taller. (Bump the table at this time so thatthe tower falls over) Rebuild the tower on the floor and explain why this is a much stronger foundation than the shakycard table.

Inform the children that we need to do the same thing with our lives, we must build our lives on a solid foundation to keepus from toppling over as we grow up. God gives us the Bible, which is the best foundation on which to build our lives. Ifwe listen to God and obey His rules, we will have a much better life.

Home > Preschool > Lessons > Lesson Guides > Closing Prayer

CLOSING PRAYERJust as the Opening Prayer is extremely important to the day’s lesson and structure, so too is the Closing Prayer. Notonly does it signal that the class has ended, but it also gives you the opportunity to reinforce the lesson and share whatwas taught one more time. The children will know the lesson has real life application and meaning when it becomes partof the closing prayer. The closing prayer should be brief. Remember, the children are probably anxious to go on to thenext phase of their day, and will not likely keep still to hear a long closing pray.

The Closing Prayer should always include the following:1. Praise to God for the opportunity to be able to hear His Word and learn from it. 2. Application of the Lesson. For example if the lesson was on "Temptation," your prayer may include asking for the HolySpirit to help everyone during the week whenever they are tempted. 3. Safety and health for the children. 4. That others may see Jesus in our lives.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TAKE HOME PAGE

To parents: This page lets you know what your child learned today in Sunday School. Included are

"Words to Remember" from the Bible, a suggested activity to reinforce the lesson, and a short prayer. Being involved and interacting with your child can be very rewarding for both of you.

© Kids Sunday School Place, Inc. Al l Rights Reserved. www.kidssundayschool.com

What We Learned: Today, your child learned about how important it is to live his or her life according to God’s rules. The children also learned that when they choose to disobey God, things might start falling apart. In the lesson on the Tower of Babel, because the people where trying to be higher and bigger than God, God made sure they could not understand each other by confusing their language. If we choose not to follow God's rules things may go wrong for us as well. (Scripture used: Genesis 11:1-10)

Words to Remember: (Bible versions used are selected to help young children learn and understand the meaning of scripture.) "Keep my commands and follow them, I am the LORD.” Leviticus 22:31 NIV Practice this verse several times with your child during the week. This will not only help your child remember the verse, but also it will help to reinforce what he or she learned during class.

Suggested Parent/Child Activity: Play with some blocks for this activity. Ask your child to listen carefully to your instructions on how to build something with the blocks. To make it a little more difficult, say the instructions really fast in hopes that your child will NOT do the right thing. If your child doesn't follow your instructions, although they were fast, remind him or her that in order to follow directions, he or she must pay close attention or it will be hard to do the right thing. Slowly repeat the instructions, making sure that your child has enough time to listen and follow your directions correctly. When we follow the directions, good things will come.

Daily Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to follow Your instructions and rules. Help me follow my parents’ rules as well. I want to make good things in life, God, and I know that if I don’t follow the rules, bad things might happen. Help me remember to listen to Your voice and to follow You Lord. Amen.
