RevisionUnit 1 – What is globalization?
![Page 5: Lesson 9 - Test Revision](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022013110/547b91dcb4795983098b4e4c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
What are the characteristics of globalization?
1. Contacts between regions are more frequent
2. Borders (邊界 ) between regions are less obvious (明顯 )
3. People, organizations and communities in different regions are more closely related and have greater influences on each other
![Page 6: Lesson 9 - Test Revision](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022013110/547b91dcb4795983098b4e4c/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Are there any consensus (共識 ) on the extent of globalization?
No, different people have different views.
E.g. some think that the Filipino domestic helpers are very globalized because these helpers work in different Asian countries;
Some think that the Filipino domestic helpers are not related to globalization because most of these helpers work in Asia only.

1. Transportation
Shortens regional distance
Promotes international division of labour
![Page 10: Lesson 9 - Test Revision](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022013110/547b91dcb4795983098b4e4c/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
2. Communication technology

3. TV broadcasting
Makes people’s tastes in certain products become identical (相同 ) disregard of their country of origin
Enhances our knowledge of the world and provides us with first-hand information
![Page 12: Lesson 9 - Test Revision](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022013110/547b91dcb4795983098b4e4c/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
4. The Internet (Interactive medium 互動媒體 )
Greatly speeds up the transmission (傳送 ) of information
Links up people from different places and strengthens their interaction

Retail shop (零售商店 )
Production base (生產基地 ) / production line (生產線 )/ factory (工廠 )
![Page 16: Lesson 9 - Test Revision](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022013110/547b91dcb4795983098b4e4c/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
How do multinational corporations benefited from economic globalization?
The production costs can be dramatically reduced by setting up the production line in developing countries which have relatively low wages and rents.
Distributing production line across different countries can
reduce investment risk.

Three different aspects of economic globalization
1. Globalization of capital market (資本市場全球化 ) More and more private enterprises and governments have started to raise cap
ital overseas Restriction on capital flows have become more relaxed Investors have brought invaluable capital to developing countries
2. Globalization of labour market (勞工市場全球化 ) More and more multinational corporations have moved their production proced
ures to other production bases in overseas countries Increase job opportunities for workers in developing countries
3. Globalization of commodity market (商品市場全球化 ) A lot of enterprises are now selling their products to overseas markets instead
of just focusing on the local markets Consumers can purchase products from places around the world
![Page 18: Lesson 9 - Test Revision](https://reader030.vdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022013110/547b91dcb4795983098b4e4c/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
What is a sweatshop?
People call some factories ‘sweatshops’ where workers are badly exploited (剝削 ).
Some manufacturers would take advantage of the loopholes (漏洞 ) in the labour policies (勞工條例 ) in developing countries.
They would try their best to reduce production costs by reducing wages and extending working hours.
