Activity 1

• What are the sources of water?

Page 3: Lesson plan 13 running water

Sources of water

• Running water.• Standing water.

Page 4: Lesson plan 13 running water

Running water

Page 5: Lesson plan 13 running water

•Running water is an agent of erosion transportation and deposition.

Page 6: Lesson plan 13 running water

Activity 1 • Draw the diagram of a river and

mark starting point and end point:-

Page 7: Lesson plan 13 running water

Factors affecting river erosion and deposition

• Amount of water• Speed of the flowing water• Hardness of the rock• Slope of the land

Page 8: Lesson plan 13 running water

Landforms produced by the river

• V shaped valley.• Canyon.• Waterfall.• Flood plain.• Meander.• Oxbow lake.• Delta.

V - shaped valley

• The inclined surface on either sides of the river are called valleys.

• The down cutting of the river is faster than the lateral cutting of the valleys and due to this ,the depth of the river increases. They cause the valleys to take the “v” shape.

Page 16: Lesson plan 13 running water

Canyons• A deep valley with steep near

vertical sides are known as canyons.

• E.g: Grand Canyon is situated in Arizona in USA

Acivity 2

• Experiment with a bucket of water

Page 19: Lesson plan 13 running water

Waterfall

Page 20: Lesson plan 13 running water

Waterfall• Water falls vertically down from the

steep places in hilly regions. This kind of flow of the river is called waterfall.

• Jog falls of Karnataka is the biggest in India

Flood plain

• Flood plain is a low lying land that borders a river and is subjected to periodic flooding.

•Meanders

Page 50: Lesson plan 13 running water

Meanders

• Big and small twist in the course of river is called Meandering. It continually change their forms.

Page 58: Lesson plan 13 running water

•Ox bow lakes

Page 59: Lesson plan 13 running water
Page 60: Lesson plan 13 running water

Ox bow lakes

• The curve of meander gets isolated in to an individual body of water .There are called ox -bow lakes.

Page 61: Lesson plan 13 running water

Page 63: Lesson plan 13 running water
Page 64: Lesson plan 13 running water

Delta• When rivers brings materials along with

it which gets deposited near to the mouth of the rivers the formation of the delta takes place.

• When deltas form the river splits in to smaller branches. These are the distributaries

Conclusion

Page 72: Lesson plan 13 running water

Review questions

• In which river jog falls located?• What is ox –bow lake?

Page 73: Lesson plan 13 running water

Follow up activity

• Prepare a picture album for running water and it’s landforms?
