Content of the Lesson: Skill Theme – Striking with rackets Movement Concept – With people

Level of Skill Proficiency: Control and Utilization

Student Objectives: The student will be able to…1. (psychomotor): Hit a ball to a partner successfully with accuracy, while

holding the racket properly and using correct form.2. (cognitive): Verbally give all the cues of hitting a ball with a racket.3. (affective): Be attentive to the teachers while observing the demonstration of

hitting a ball with a racket.

Necessary Equipment: -13 rackets -13 yarn/nerf/squishy/wiffle balls -open gym space -13 poly spots -13 hula hoops with styrofoam stands

Safety for Lesson: -remind students to spread out in the gym -remind students to put their hand through the strap at the end of the

racket, if their racket has one -remind students to stop hitting the ball when they hear “fumble”

National Standards: Standard 1: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Standard 2: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning performance of physical activities.

ISBE Standards: 19.A.2 Demonstrate control when performing combinations and sequences in locomotor, non-locomotor and manipulative motor patterns.

19.B.2 Identify the principles of movement (e.g., absorption and application of force, equilibrium).

(Time) Instant Activity: (5 min) Hula hoops are spread out across the gym floor with three balls laying inside each hula hoop. On the go signal, students run to other hoops and bring one ball back to their hoop. Repeat this until the teacher says “fumble.”

(Time) Set Induction: (1 min) Students will be told that today they will be working on hitting a ball with a racket using proper form.

(Time) Activity 1: (5 min) Hitting a ball with a racket alone.Description and Management: Students will be instructed to spread out across the

gym, finding their own poly spot. They will try to hit the ball in the air as many times as they can using the forehand strike. If they feel comfortable with the forehand, then they will try to hit the ball in the air as many times as they can using the backhand strike. And then if they feel comfortable with both, then they will try to hit the ball in the air as many times as they can alternating between forehand and backhand.Cues: Reach back, swing, follow through.

(Time) Activity 2: (7 min) Hitting a ball back and forth with a partner.Description and Management: Students will then be instructed to find a partner

and they will stand back to back. They will try to hit the ball back and forth over a line, letting the ball bounce once before they hit it back to their partner. They will start with forehand, then move to backhand when instructed, and then finally be free to use whichever they would like.Cues: Reach back, swing, follow through.

(Time) Activity 3: (7 min) Creating a game involving hitting a ball with a racket.Description and Management: Teachers will set up the hula hoops with foam

stands around the gym. Partners will be instructed to create a game with new rules of their choice. They will have to hit the ball back and forth with their rackets and use the hula hoop in some form during their game. After each group has made a game, the teachers will pick a couple for demonstrations.Cues: Reach back, swing, follow through.

(Time) Activity 4: (9 min) Hitting a ball back and forth with a group of four.Description and Management: Partners will be instructed to find another set of

partners to form a group with. They will try to hit the ball back and forth, just as in the previous activity, but this time with the task of cooperating with a teammate to decide who will hit it back over to the other team.Cues: Reach back, swing, follow through.

(Time) Closure: (2 min) Students will be instructed to return the equipment and then to huddle in front of the teachers. The teachers will then give a summary of what was accomplished in today’s lesson, focusing on what was done well. They will then be dismissed to change.
