Lesson Planning Guidelines Student Teaching – Fall 2017
1) Overview Lesson Title: Gummy worms vs. Earthworms
o Kindergarten o 27 students
Total minutes scheduledo 40 minutes
Specific lesson objectives—Look to Bloom’s Taxonomy and Depth of Knowledge Levels— list your objectives in bullet form.
o SWBAT use their five senses IOT describe living and non-living things.o SWBAT use the scientific method, IOT ask questions about living and
non-living things.o SWBAT investigate living things IOT observe that all living things need
food, water, air, and a place to grow.o SWBAT compare and contrast living and non-living things IOT separate
and sort them into groups.o SWBAT use observations IOT describe what animals and plants need to
survive.
Essential Questions guiding your lesson: o How are living things different from non-living things?o What makes something living?o What makes something non-living?
PA/Common Core Content standards that your lesson addresseso S.K-2.B.3.1.1
Distinguish between living and nonliving things.o S.K-2.B.3.1.2
Identify plants and animals as living things.o 3.1.K.A9
Plan and conduct a simple investigation and understand that different questions require different kinds of investigations.
Use data/evidence to construct explanations and understand that scientists develop explanations based on their evidence and compare them with their current scientific knowledge.
Materials, supplies, and resourceso Chart papero Markers o Worksheet
o Pencils
2) Lesson Sequence & Content o Lesson Introduction
5 minuteso Students will begin by sitting on the carpeto I will begin the lesson by showing the students pictures of different
objects ranging from living, non-living, and once livingo We will discuss why they think it is living, non-living, or once living using
the “What makes you think/say that?” thinking routineo I will then begin to introduce the experiment that we will be doing
o Lesson Body 30 minutes
o I will show them a gummy worm and an Earthworm but I will not ask them any questions.
o I will remind them to use their scientific behavior; to observe quietly and not to make loud comments or expressions.
o They will return back to their desk and fill out a see think wonder worksheet.
o I will remind the students that the see is what we observe with our eyes, the think is what we notice about the worms, and the wonder is about what questions we have.
o When they are done, the students will read their chair bag until all of the other students are done
o I will review some responses with the students from the see think wonderings of the class
o I will give each table of students a paper plate with a gummy worm and an Earthworm on it
o They will have 2 minutes to observe them without saying anythingo I will then have the students think, pair, and share with the person sitting
next to them at the table about what they saw and the similarities and differences between the two
o I will choose one group of student at each of the 6 tables to tell me what their partner said
o The students will then complete a worksheet that will be glued into their science copy books about what they saw and how they know that one if the worms is living and the other is non-living
o If students have difficulty writing, I will allow them to draw pictures to represent their thoughts as well as write what they would like to say and have them trace my letters and words.
o I will also have the student reference the words we have learned throughout the unit that will be up on the board
o Lesson Closure 5 minutes
o We will close the lesson by reviewing all that the students have learned in a whip share
o I will lead the students to singing the “It is Living” song and transition them to the next subject
3)Lesson Assessment o Formative
Students will be assessed on the completeness of their work as a way to see their understanding
o Summative I will use the work completed in the students science copy books
to see their understanding of the four lessons taught and see where they may need extra support to help solidify their knowledge
4) Attach all handouts, materials, resources used as part of this lesson
