BALANCE BEAMLesson ObjectivesTo introduce a measurable balance activity as a foundation for all balance andstability moves. To refine and control movement and balances
Activity/TasksChildren practice balancing ondifferent body parts e.g. slowLeapfrogs, Statue Strides (freeze witheach landing), Statue Tig Try balancingfor given periods of time (count of 6–8) on different body parts Move on topassing ball while standing on oneleg. Can they make 10 passes eachstanding on 1 leg. Children see howlong they can balance on balancebeam for.
Success Criteria/Outcomesable to perform line/beam tasks withconsistency ~ progressing to ability tobalance with slow arm and bodymoves ~ progressing to an ability toswitch arms or legs quickly and ‘fix’pose
Key Teaching PointsFocus is outwards and forwards (notdown or around) Stability is achievedwith hip and torso control outwardsto legs and arms…Only the working muscles need to beused – relax !Adjust lower legs and feet to stabilise
Inclusion/Extension TasksIntroduce use of medicine ballalongside activities. Relays [eg Long Stride (behind back),Ski Slalom (held out front…)
Warm Up8–10 minutes of continuous activitywith an extra emphasis on slow-motion, stop-start or change of speed.
Cool Down5–8 slow or held moves, perhaps withextra Stretches including twist androtation of upper body
SafetySituation: use non-interference zoneActivity: Facility: dry, non-slip, clear zonearound Equipment: stable footwear, beamand mat in good order
EquipmentBasic - Balance Beam, stopwatchAdvanced – Footballs/Medicine balls, gym lines, team colours
NC LinksKey Stage 2 PE – 10 a,b,c
Other Linksfundamental to many sports andmovements ~ eg. stop-start in soccer, basketball, landings in gymnastics, dance…[also a key to lower back andleg injury prevention]
