Lessons to Live By • Session 4
Lessons for the LeaderPaul wrote 13 books that are included in the New Testament. Much of Paul's writings deal with living in ways that please and honor God. God wanted people to not only accept Jesus as their Savior and Lord, He also wanted people to grow in their knowledge of Jesus and to apply Jesus' teachings to their everyday lives. • Read Philippians. Imagine being a member of the
church in Philippi and receiving Paul's letter. How would you feel listening to his instructions? Do the actions in your life measure up to what Paul addressed in this letter?
• Reread 1:27. In what ways do you live your life worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ? Do people around you know Jesus is your Savior and Lord? What example do you provide for your own family? What about your spiritual family?
• Reread 2:13-15. About what do you grumble? How does your attitude impact your actions? What does your attitude say to people around you?
• Reread 4:4-6. When was the last time you rejoiced? When was the last time you decided not to worry about something? How did your decision affect you?
• Think about how the Bible provides guidance on ways to live that please and honor God. Your decision to read, study, and follow the Word of God will make an impact not only on you, but also on people around you.
• Consider the children in your ministry. Who is a good example in the children's lives of someone living out the teachings of the Bible? What impact do you have on the children in your one hour of Worship KidStyle? Pray for each child by name. Ask God to help each child learn from the Bible to not only gain head-knowledge of who Jesus is, but to gain a personal experience with Him.

books. Each of these books was a letter to a church, a group of people, or individuals. We will learn about the Book of Philippians today. This letter was written to the Christians in a city called Philippi (FIH lih pigh)."
7tPicture-pose the Bible Story (7 minutes)

• Guide children to use a lot of facial expressions to show feelings and emotions.
• Form four groups.• Give each group one section of the Bible story.• Instruct the children to think of ways to
picture-pose the section.
Live the TruthBased on Philippians
Group 1: Picture-pose Paul as he thought about the people in Philippi. Read aloud Philippians 1:1-7.
Paul was very thankful for the Christians in Philippi because they had supported him as he told people about Jesus, even when he was put in prison. Paul told the people in Philippi how much he missed them and how he prayed that their love for God would grow. He reminded them that as long as their love grew, God would always continue to work in their lives to make them more like Christ. Paul gave the people a very special challenge. Let's see what Paul said. [Select a volunteer to read aloud Philippians 1:27.]
Group 2: Picture-pose what Jesus did and what all people should do in response to Him. Read aloud Philippians 2:1-4.
Paul encouraged the people of Philippi to have the attitude of Jesus. Paul reminded them how Jesus was God's Son, but Jesus was willing to become a man and live on the earth. Paul told them that Jesus humbled Himself and died on a cross, but God exalted Jesus. Therefore, all people should bow before Jesus and confess Him as Savior and Lord.

Group 3: Picture-pose how Paul felt about his relationship with Jesus.
Paul told the Christians in Philippi that the most important thing in his life was knowing Jesus. Paul told them that nothing compared to a relationship with Jesus. Paul also reminded them that he was not perfect, but he was growing to become more like Jesus. Paul encouraged the people to forget the past and move on to the future. Listen to what Paul wrote. [Read aloud Philippians 3:12-14.]
Group 4: Picture-pose some of the things Paul instructed Christians to do. Read aloud Philippians 4:4-7.
Paul encouraged the Christians to stand firm in their faith and help people who were working to share the gospel. He told the people to rejoice always, and instead of worrying, to pray and tell God what they need. Paul encouraged the people to be thankful and God would give them peace as they trust in Him.
8 Make Life Application (4 minutes)• Ask: "If you had to summarize the Book of
Philippians in a few words, what would you say is the purpose of Philippians? What can we learn from Paul's letter to the Philippians?"
• Say: "By reading and studying the Book of Philippians, we can learn how to live. Paul wanted the people of Philippi to stand up for what they believed, to stop worrying about things, and trust God. Paul also wanted the people to rejoice because God had given them so much."
• Complete "What Can I Learn from the Bible?" or "What Can I Learn from the Bible About …?"
9tLearn the Key Bible Verse (3 minutes)

• Guide the children to follow along ("What Paul Said About Becoming a Christian") on their Worship Guides as you discuss how a person becomes a Christian.
• Select volunteers to read aloud the verses on the Worship Guides.
• Offer to talk with any child interested in becoming a Christian.
11t Show "Jack Spade" Video (DVD, 8 minutes)
• Ask: "How do you learn to do new things?"• Say: "Sometimes we can learn to do new things
by following instructions in a manual. Let's see how Jack Spade helps Daniel learn to be a good agent."
• Show the video.• Say: "Jack admitted that, although the training
manual was a good tool for teaching Daniel how to be a good agent, Daniel needed to read something else to find out how to live his life."
• Ask: "What did Jack tell Daniel he needed to read to learn how to live his life?"
• Say: "We can learn how God wants us to live our lives by reading the Bible. The Bible is God's Word, and has answers for any problems we might face."

Philippi Facts (Lessons to Live By • Session 4)Worship KidStyle Children’s Edition, Volume 1© 2013 LifeWay. Printed in the USA. OK to copy.
PhilippiAt one time, Philippi was a gold-mining area.
Philip II of Macedon seized the mines and took control of the city. He changed the name to Philippi, naming it for himself after 356 B.C.
Philippi was the site of a major battle that helped the establishment of the Roman Empire.
Paul's first visit to Philippi was on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:9-10).
Paul talked with Lydia and others on a riverbank in Philippi. Lydia and others believed what Paul told them about Jesus (Acts 16:13-15).
Most likely during Paul's time, Philippi did not have a synagogue.
Paul and Silas were beaten and jailed while in Philippi (Acts 16:20,22-23).
