The Microsoft Azure platform has radically changed the way infrastructure as a service (IaaS) resources are deployed, managed and secured. The next evolution of this shift is the Microsoft Azure Resource Manager (known as ARM), a deployment model that simplifies the process of creating complex environments for development, testing and production in a repeatable manner while providing more granular security controls. Ultimately, ARM will replace the existing (Classic or Service Manager) Azure deployment model.
While ARM is a welcome advance, there is one significant caveat — it is not backward compatible with Classic configurations. Enterprises using Azure in a Classic environment need to take into account:
• Microsoft is focusing all its development efforts on ARM. No new features or functionality are being added to the Classic model.
• All virtual machines, storage and virtual networks created through a Classic deployment will cease to work in the ARM environment. In fact, Microsoft officially recommends that you use ARM for new resources, and re-deploy existing resources through the new architecture.
• There is no one-size-fits-all upgrade path. Each company has a customized Azure environment to match their unique business requirements.
All of this means your enterprise has some tough decisions ahead. You must identify which resources should be moved, which resources (if any) should remain in the Classic environment, build up your new ARM environment and migrate your resources. Plus, you must accomplish it all with minimal business interruptions.

The Nimbo ARM upgrade is completed in two distinct phasesPhase 1 — Discovery and upgrade strategy ($15,000)This phase provides:
• Technical discovery: Nimbo collects relevant operational requirements, such as interdependenciesand process workflow, through stakeholder questionnaires, interviews and tools
• ARM infrastructure design: Creation of a detailed architectural plan and diagram of what theproposed environment will look like when re-tooled in ARM
• Risk registry: A summary of identified risks and recommended mitigation strategies
• Upgrade execution strategy:
○ Outlines the pros and cons of your available re-deployment options
○ Identifies the prerequisites that must be met before the deployment can commence
○ Provides a detailed and customized upgrade roadmap, including timeline, required resourcesand actionable items
• Additional recommendations: Depending on your existing infrastructure design and configuration,Nimbo will provide additional recommendations around best practices, security and optimization
• Upgrade execution statement of work (SOW): Outlines the resources and associated costs required to execute on thestrategic upgrade roadmap, should you choose to continue your engagement with Nimbo
At the conclusion of this phase your company will be equipped with detailed documentation of how your environment must be re-tooled to take advantage of the superior ARM features, as well an upgrade strategy based on your individual requirements. Phase 2 — ARM upgrade In Phase 2, Nimbo creates ARM templates to build the new environment and re-deploy your existing resources. The length and associated costs are determined by the Phase 1 results.
