In Christ,
Pastor Hill
Approaching Advent with Thanksgiving I know it’s November! Why is Pastor writing about Advent already? It’s next month! You’re right! It
is next month but it will be here before you know it. So why am I writing this? Because I feel that these two seasons are indivisible--they’re meant to be together.
On Thanksgiving Day, along with enjoying a good turkey dinner with all the trimmings, we pause to focus our attention on that for which we are most thankful. For what are we really and truly most thankful? We are thankful for the One whose first coming, whose birth, is the prime focus of the Ad-vent season, i.e., God’s Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
During the whole season of Advent, which starts on December 1st, we will, once again, spiritually
prepare ourselves for the proper celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. During the weeks of this season we are given an opportunity to make Jesus’ upcoming birthday a part of our every day and given a chance to draw closer to Him in our faith relationship. What will we be doing to assist with this preparation? What is our approach going to be? Well, how about taking :
. . . A Repentant Approach
One way of preparing for the coming of Christ is to repent of our sins. God sent His beloved Son into the world to be born, to live a sinless life, to die and rise again so that we might have His forgiveness from our sin. Advent provides a special time during which we can regularly confess our wayward behavior to God and thankfully receive His pardon and peace because of Christ – who is “the reason for the season.”
. . . A Hopeful Approach
We have much to look forward to because Jesus is on His way! He is coming again! In the meanwhile, a growing relationship with our God, a life blessed by Christ’s love, and an eternity in heaven with Him awaits us. This Advent, during this preparatory time, we must make it our mission, as St. Peter enjoins, to give an answer (through thankful thoughts, words, and deeds) to everyone who asks us to give the reason for “the hope that is in us” (see 1 Peter 3:15).
. . . A Prayerful Approach
After God told Mary that she would be the mother of Jesus, Mary said a prayer to thank God for all His benefits to her (see Luke 1:46-55). Thankful prayer should be an important part of our approach during Advent as we reflect on all the many gifts that God has given us – especially the gift of His Son.
As much as it is necessary for one to open the doors of the church in order to enter it, one must thus approach Advent with Thanksgiving.

WORKING TOGETHER, SEEING REAL RESULTS
So far in our campaign, ELCA members have given more than $9 million to the ELCA Malaria Campaign. That means we're more than 60 percent of the way to our $15 million goal!
An outpouring of generosity this spring helped us to exceed our 2013 World Malaria Day goal of $250,000. The ELCA Malaria Campaign raised more than $300.000 in gifts, plus $130,000 in matching funds toward this effort - allowing the malaria program in the Katakwi district of Uganda to be fully funded this year. Thanks to your generosity, the program is off to a running start: training village health teams, distributing malaria educational materials and creating strong relationships in the field.
With support from you and other members of the ELCA, The Lutheran World Federation malaria program has already begun to change lives in Uganda. Communities are embracing this program with open arms, so much so that local government health workers are volunteering their time on the weekends to staff open clinics in rural locations. Change has begun in Uganda, thanks to your generosity and our Lutheran partners in Uganda.
I'm constantly encouraged by the work of this program, both in the United States and in Africa, and I'm proud to be a part of our global Lutheran church, I hope you are too.
In Christ's service
Jessica Nipp Hacker
Coordinator, ELCA Malaria Campaign
EVERYONE IS GIFTED
Each of us is a gift of God, and each of us is gifted by God with unique abilities, skills, and talents. Part of what we are is given to us at birth, our genetic inheritance. Another part of our nature is received at baptism when we become children of God. A third part comes from the things we learn and the life we live. All of these things combine to create our giftedness.
Our gifts come from God. We are gifted for a purpose - to build up the body of Christ and its ministry in the world ( 1 Corinthians 12:7 ).
This simply means the gifts we have received are meant to be given away. We have been blessed to be a blessing to others.
As we grow in our understanding of our giftedness we also grow in our willingness to use our gifts. Our giftedness grows as we give it away, as a gifted singer grows in talent as she gives away her singing. This is true for you and for every member of our congregation. No one person has all the gifts that are needed in the church, and no one in the church is without any gifts for ministry.
At the foot of the cross true community is born. Here at the cross, we realize that we are on our knees as beggars with other beggars. We need Christ. We need each other. God acts and makes us into a Family of need; human beings. Here at the cross, and only at the cross, do we understand the joyful good news...
We are justified by grace through faith.
In His Service

LLETET’’SS TTALKALK TTURKEYURKEY
In 1863, Abraham Lincoln declared the last
Thursday of November to be a National Day of
Thanksgiving.
Unlike today’s feast of turkey,
stuffing, cranberry, etc.; the original
Thanksgiving menu probably
consisted of the following items:
seethed (boiled) lobster, roasted goose, boiled
turkey, fricassee of Coney (fish), pudding of Indian
Corn Meal with dried Whortleberries, seethed cod,
roasted duck, stewed pumpkins, roasted venison
with mustard sauce, savory pudding with hominy,
fruit, and Holland cheese.
The turkey is one of the most famous birds in North America. In fact, Benjamin Franklin wanted to make the wild turkey, not the Bald Eagle, the national bird of the United States!
The turkey's popularity comes from the American people's love of eating the bird for special occasions like Thanksgiving and Christmas. The wild turkey we usually see in photos or pictures is not the same as the domestic turkey that we serve at Thanksgiving. Domestic or tame turkeys weigh twice what a wild turkey does and are raised on farms for profit. Most domestic turkeys are so heavy they are unable to fly.
A letter went out to our current and former students
regarding the status of our new Heritage School
designation. We are all so excited about this new
opportunity for growth and I wanted to share that
letter with you. : )
Dear Parents,
We are excited to welcome you to our new and
improved After School Program! Once again, we
bring to your children the excellent homework help,
crafts and activities in our loving and caring
Christian environment. However, this time we
have added a new and exciting component.
We are delighted to announce that during the past
few months we have been busy working to become
a Heritage School. Heritage schools give students
a chance to work on homework and to also focus
on the language, cultures and traditions of another
country. We will now be exempt from licensure by
the State Department of Social Services as a child
daycare center and now under the California
Department of Education. Heritage schools follow
health, safety, operational and parent notification
requirements set by the CDE.
Our Heritage School will be teaching Spanish
language, culture and the traditions that make
learning this widely used language fun. We will be
offering the Rosetta Stone Program to all of our
students starting with the 2014-2015 school year.
This program has five levels and the great thing
about this program is its tractability and self-paced
online guidance.
If you are interested in re-registering at Grace of
Calvary and you already paid your registration fee,
you will get first priority in our program. Please call
as soon as possible if you are interested. We are
going to be ready to have all students starting
January 6th. Please call or come by before January
6th, so that we know to hold your spot here at Grace
of Calvary. After January 6th we will open to the
public again, if there is room.

WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS?
Sometimes we wonder, "What did I do to deserve this?" or "Why did God have to do this to me?" Here is a wonderful explanation! A daughter is telling her Mother how everything is going wrong, she's failing algebra, her boyfriend broke up with her and her best friend is moving away.
Meanwhile, her Mother is baking a cake and asks her daughter if she would like a snack, and the daughter says, "Absolutely Mom, I love your cake."
"Here, have some cooking oil," her Mother offers. "Yuck" says her daughter.
"How about a couple raw eggs?" "Gross, Mom!"
"Would you like some flour then? Or maybe baking soda?" "Mom, those are all yucky!"
To which the mother replies: "Yes, all those things seem bad all by themselves. But when they are put together in the right way, they make a wonderfully delicious cake!
God works the same way. Many times we wonder why He would let us go through such bad and difficult times. But God knows that when He puts these things all in His order, they always work for good! We just have to trust Him and, eventually, they will all make something wonderful!
God is crazy about you. He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.
Whenever you want to talk, He'll listen. He can live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.

*All Saints' Day (also known as All Hallows, Solemnity of All Saints, or The Feast of
All Saints) is celebrated on 1 November by parts of Western Christianity, and on the first
Sunday after Pentecost in Eastern Christianity, in honor of all the saints, known and
unknown. All Saints' Day is the second day of Hallowmas, and begins at sunrise on the
1st of November and finishes at sundown on the 1st of November. It is the day before All
Souls' Day.
In many Lutheran churches, All Saints' Day and Reformation Day are observed
concurrently on the Sunday before or after those dates, given Reformation Day is
observed in Protestant Churches on 31 October. Typically, Martin Luther's "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" is sung
during the service. Besides discussing Luther's role in the Protestant Reformation, some recognition of the prominent
early leaders of the Reformed tradition, such as John Calvin and John Knox, occurs. The observance of Reformation
Day may be immediately followed by a reading of those members of the local congregation who have died in the past
year in observance of All Saints' Day. Otherwise, the recognition of deceased church members occurs at another
designated portion of the service.

We cordially invite you to worship God with us and celebrate the New Life God gives us in the raising of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Children are an integral part of our worship service. Worship activities and Bible story books are available for children aged 3 thru 4th grade to use during all services. A Parents’ Room, with sound, is available adjoining the sanctuary.
Grace of Calvary Lutheran Church & Preschool, a family oriented church founded in 1956, is a parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America supporting programs such as Lutheran Social Services of California, the Alhambra Retirement Community, the Lutheran Food Bank in West Covina, The Shepherd’s Pantry, Lutheran World Relief, Lutheran Immigration Services, and Habitat for Humanity International.
The Preschool is an exciting, educational ministry open to all children in the community. Daily classes are taught by a faculty dedicated to both the educational and spiritual growth of the children. The classes include a computer lab for the children. Weekly chapel is led by the Pastor. The Preschool addresses the social aspect of the children’s growth from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Active members of the congregation may receive up to a 25% discount off tuition.
Our Youth Ministry offers activities including Summer Camp at El Camino Pines, Christmas Caroling to the sick and homebound, other Christian service projects and just getting together for the fun of it!
The women’s group, Miriam Circle, meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month. They celebrate by enjoying lunch and pursuing educational and spiritual growth. Miriam Circle provides meals for shut-ins, funds for various ministries, as well as family visits to those in need.
