let's make 'caping' - a farmer's hat
DESCRIPTION
Let's make CAPING, a cone shaped hat often worn by Javanese farmers. CAPING is often worn by farmers in Bali and other places in Indonesia also. Many farmers in few South East Asia countries wear a cone shaped hat similar to CAPING as well. Caping is originally made of woven bamboo. It is light and has a wide brim, a perfect way to protect the farmer's face, ears and neck from the harsh sun and rain.TRANSCRIPT

1. We need: wide paper (white or coloured), sticky
tape, a stapler, a pair of scissors, a pencil, a glue, a
big round basket.
![Page 3: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
2. Use the round washing basket as a template
![Page 4: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

![Page 5: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
4. We will need: 1 big circle and 4 long strips to
make CAPING.
![Page 6: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
5. Cut the circle and all strips.
![Page 7: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
6. Use 2 strips of paper to make a headband.
It should fit snuggly around the head.
![Page 8: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
7. Put the third strip over the ‘headband’ and
staple each end on the headband.
![Page 9: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
8. Put the fourth strip across the top of the third
strip (to make a ‘cross’) then staple each end
on the headband.
![Page 10: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
9. The inside part of the head is nearly ready.
![Page 11: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
10. Snip the top part of the headband. This will
allow flexibility when we attach it to the hat.
![Page 12: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
11. Carefully fold in the snipped parts.
![Page 13: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
12. The inside part is now ready.
![Page 14: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

![Page 15: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
14. Open up the fold and cut along the dotted line.
![Page 16: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
15. Cover ¼ of the circle (or more) with glue.
![Page 17: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

![Page 18: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

![Page 19: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

the cone shaped hat.
![Page 20: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
19. Press it down gently. Using sticky tape
pieces, attach ‘the cross’ under the cone shaped
hat.
![Page 21: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
20. Sticky tape the ‘snipped parts’ of the
headband under the ‘cone’
![Page 22: Let's make 'Caping' - a farmer's hat](https://reader031.vdocuments.net/reader031/viewer/2022020123/5598aba71a28abc43f8b46d4/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
21. Use enough sticky tape but it is not necessary to
sticky tape all the snipped parts under ‘the cone’.
