Letter from the Chairman

Annual Report for the Period October 1, 2011 thru September 30, 2012

Dear Sisters,

The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation accomplished a

great deal during the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

The nine positions on the Board were fully

staffed for the entire year. Three Directors

fulfilled their commitment to the Foundation and

chose to step down at the end of their term which

coincided with the end of the fiscal year. We

wish to recognize and thank these women for

their service to the Foundation—Patricia Rankin

Marmaduke, Σ; Monica Lerma, ΓΖ; and Michelle

Short Porter, ΑΝ. The Board welcomes three

new Directors—Karen J. Fisher, ΑΝ; Rebecca

Dixon McLaren, ΑΜ; and Leslie Ervin Trahant,

ΑΒ. (Note: Between the end of the fiscal year

and the publishing of this report, two Directors

have resigned—Christina Kay O’Brien, Κ; and

Christine Labbate, ΓΜ. Those positions are

currently open. The Board also thanks these

women for their service.)

At the Centennial Convention held in Ann Arbor,

Michigan, the Foundation awarded 12

scholarships—including our first ever $2,000

scholarship—presenting a total of $13,000 in

scholarships. In addition, a check for $6,000 was

presented to Glenmary Home Missioners to

support Camp Friendship and a check for $5,000

was presented to the Elizabeth Smart

Foundation in honor of our Siena Medalist.

The Foundation provided grants in 2012 for two

collegians to attend the UIFI leadership

conference.

Twenty-three alumnae associations, chapters,

groups, and individuals fulfilled their

commitment to donate $1,000 or more to the

Centennial Society. These monies were used to

provide the $2,000 scholarship at Convention as

well as to fund Convention programming. The

future of the Centennial Society is under review

by the Board. Additional information will be

coming soon.

Two additional endowed funds were fully funded

during this fiscal year—the Amelia McSweeney

Scholarship in Memory of Megan V. Beck and

Stephanie Coonan and the Dr. Mari Ann Callais

Leadership Endowment. These funds will

continue to provide scholarships and leadership

opportunities to sisters into the future.

The Directors want to thank all those Fraternity

members and friends of Theta Phi Alpha who

have supported the Foundation so generously

over the past year. We will continue to use your

contributions in the very best interests of Theta

Phi Alpha.

Elizabeth is studying music at Brigham

Young University with an emphasis on

harp performance.

The abduction of Elizabeth Smart was

one of the most followed child abduction

cases of our time. Elizabeth was abduct-

ed on June 5, 2002 and her captors had

controlled her by threatening to kill her

and her family if she tried to escape.

Fortunately, the police safely returned

Elizabeth back to her family on March

12, 2003, after being held prisoner for

nine months. Through this traumatic

experience Elizabeth has become an ad-

vocate for change related to child abduc-

tion, recovery programs and National

legislation. Elizabeth triumphantly testi-

fied before her captor and the world

about the very private nightmare she

suffered during her abduction, which lead

to conviction. Elizabeth is currently in-

volved in the “Elizabeth Smart Founda-

tion”, and she has helped promote The

National AMBER Alert, The Adam

Walsh Child Protection & Safety Act and

other safety legislation to help prevent

abductions. Elizabeth is also a News

Correspondent for ABC News.

Elizabeth’s abduction and recovery has

motivated and continues to motivate par-

ents, law enforcement and leaders world-

wide to focus on children’s safety. Em-

phasizing the vigilance of every day peo-

ple in finding missing children and the

belief that there is always hope and we

can never stop searching for each and

every missing child. Two years ago, Eliz-

abeth worked with the Department of

Justice and four other recovered young

adults in creating a survivors guide, enti-

tled – “You're Not Alone: The Journey

From Abduction to Empowerment.” This

guide is meant to encourage children who

have gone through similar experiences to

not give up and know that there is life

after tragic events.

Elizabeth’s example and life now is a

daily demonstration that there really is

life after a tragic event. She travels and

speaks about not only her story, but also

topics such as overcoming extreme adver-

sity and not allowing your past to dictate

your life's future.

Each year at Leadership Conference and

National Convention, the Theta Phi Al-

pha Foundation funds educational pro-

grams and speakers to benefit the sisters

of Theta Phi Alpha. Topics include values

-based leadership, risk management,

campus and personal safety, etiquette,

scholarship, gender differences, and other

issues pertinent to today’s college women.

In 2012, Theta Phi Alpha Foundation

sponsored Ginny Carroll’s Bring Out the

Best drove home “The Three Rs: Recruit-

ment, Retention, and Ritual” and how

essential they are to a chapter’s success.

Theta Phi Alpha Foundation, together

with Theta Phi Alpha Fraternity, also

sponsored Past National President Dr.

Mari Ann Callais’ trip to speak to the

Panhellenic women at the University of

Michigan. The gift of the presentation

at our founding campus was in honor of

Theta Phi Alpha’s Centennial.

Educational Programming

Annually, the Theta Phi Alpha Founda-

tion presents scholarships to collegians

and alumnae based on academic perfor-

mance, financial need, and service to

Theta Phi Alpha.

At the Centennial Convention, 12 schol-

arships were presented to deserving sis-

ters, including one scholarship of $2000

funded by the Centennial Society, for a

total of $13,000 in scholarships.

Since 1961, the Theta Phi Alpha Founda-

tion has awarded 429 scholarships worth

over $268,700.

The Theta Phi Alpha Foundation also

provides grants for sisters to attend UIFI

– the Undergraduate Interfraternity In-

stitute – a program that offers partici-

pants the opportunity to explore, define,

and enhance their leadership skills, per-

sonal awareness, commitment to their

Centennial Convention.

Each June, Camp Wrenwoode, near

Amory, Mississippi, transforms into

Camp Friendship—two weeks of camp

open to children of low-income families.

For many years, Theta Phi Alpha alum-

nae associations, chapters, and individu-

al sisters have provided support through

the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation to Camp

Friendship with monetary support, by

providing supplies for the children, and

even working as volunteer counselors

during the camp.

At the Centennial Convention

the Theta Phi Alpha Foundation

presented Father Dominic Dug-

gins of Glenmary Home Mission-

ers with a check for $6,000,

which completely covers the

costs of two weeks of Camp

Friendship.

biennium 2010-2012.

The Centennial Society was established in 2010: to assist the Fraternity in providing a spectacular

2012 Convention to celebrate our anniversary by

providing speakers, educational programming, and activities that fall within our legal and financial abil-

ities;

to continue to provide scholarships to Theta Phi Al-

pha sisters, and introduce a special $2,000 scholar-ship with a focus on service to the Fraternity;

to add to the Foundation’s investment portfolio to

help ensure that the activities, scholarships, and as-sistance to the Fraternity continues in the years

ahead.

Sustaining Sister

The Sustaining Sister

Program is a method that

allows you to give what you

want to give, when you want

to give it, without having to

write a check or pay for

postage to send it to National

Office. Contributions are made

on a regular and pre-

determined basis through

direct checking account

withdrawals. This service is

free to donors and can be

accessed by completing the

document on the Theta Phi

Alpha website under the

Foundation tab.

1912 Society

The 1912 Society is a special

recognition given to those

sisters who remember the

Theta Phi Alpha Foundation

through planned giving. It is

easier than you might think!

Simply include the Foundation

in your will or as a beneficiary

or partial beneficiary of an

insurance policy or retirement

account. Please contact the

Foundation if you would like

assistance with this process or

if you would like to review the

Theta Phi Alpha Foundation

Gift Acceptance Policy.

Matching Funds

An easy and cost efficient

method of increasing your con-

tributions to the Foundation is

through a matching gifts pro-

gram with your employer. The

size of the donations and rati-

os that employers are willing

to match vary. Some offer a

set ratio, while others set a

maximum dollar amount.

Please ask your HR depart-

ment for details.

Endowed Funds

At the end of fiscal year 2011-

2012, the Foundation held

three fully endowed funds.

Sigma Scholarship Fund

Megan V. Beck Scholarship

Fund

Dr. Mari Ann Callais Lead-

ership Endowment

The Foundation is extremely

grateful that the Alpha Nu

Memorial Scholarship Fund is

on its way to becoming fully

endowed.

Endowed funds are required to

maintain a minimum balance

of $20,000. The interest in-

come generated from that bal-

ance as well as donations re-

ceived after the minimum bal-

ance is reached are then used

to provide grants and/or schol-

arships according to each

fund’s purpose.
