The program will run from March 2017 to July 2017.

Please be aware that all program workshops and events will be held in Perth. Regional applications will be accepted; however, all travel expenses are the responsibility of the applicant.

Who can apply?

Emerging Professionals are people who are currently employed in the sport and recreation sector and have been in the field for no more than five years. Exceptions may apply depending on your current role and areas of experience. Applicants must have the desire to develop their skills, capacity and networks within their workplace and industry.

Who should apply?

The program aims to assist participants at three different levels:

1. The opportunity to network with members of the sport and recreation industry. This is a unique

opportunity to build working relationships with other members of the industry. There are not many situations where a broad collective of roles, skills, experience and background come together with the same vision to learn, share and develop.

2. The professional development workshops are specific to the sport and recreation sector and give participants access to experts who share insights and knowledge on topics that are relevant to personal, career and workplace development.

3. The mentoring component provides the participant with the opportunity to be mentored by an experienced industry professional.

Workshop topics

A major part of the program will be the provision of professional development workshops on general topics

identified as learning and development needs in the sport and recreation industry.

sessions.

Mentoring program

As a part of the program you will be matched up with an industry-based mentor who will act as a guide and

support person for you regarding your career development in the industry. You will also be a mentor to one

participant of the Career Pathways – Student Futures program.

As a guide, it’s expected that the mentor and mentee have an initial one hour meeting in the first month.

This meeting should be used to get to know one another, set expectations regarding the relationship and

discuss what both the mentor and mentee wish to get out of the relationship. Monthly one hour meetings

would be expected thereafter. Please note that this is the minimum expectation and additional contact is

encouraged.

Meeting times, places, and frequency should be negotiated between the mentor and mentee.

Volunteer project

As an Emerging Professionals Package recipient, you are required to undertake a volunteer project over the

course of the program. This is an opportunity for you to give something back to the community and an

opportunity for you to gain work experience and develop skills in areas you may not normally be exposed

to.

The volunteer project requires you to undertake at least 40 hours of voluntary work between March 2017

and July 2017. This equates to two hours per week, which is not a huge commitment. Please note that 40

hours is the minimum and any extra would be encouraged. This number of hours has been specified to help

ensure that the volunteering experience is worthwhile for yourself and the organisation you are

volunteering within.

At the completion of the program you will be required to prepare a short presentation on your experiences,

therefore you are required to keep a log to record your experiences and hours worked for the duration of

the project. You will also be required to update DSR on your progress in course modules.

The volunteer work is again based on your individual skill development needs and interest areas.

You may undertake one continuous project or a series of smaller ones. Think about this as an opportunity

to develop skills, so it may be worth researching opportunities that you may not usually involve yourself

with. For example if you usually volunteer as a football coach, perhaps think about volunteering to assist

with administration at a small State Sporting Association.

You will be required to present a brief summary of what volunteer project(s) you intend to work on soon

after being accepted into the program.

If you are already undertaking volunteer work on a regular basis then you are welcome to use this as your

volunteer project for the program, but please discuss it with the course contacts first.

If you would like assistance in thinking of ideas or gaining contacts for your volunteer project don’t

hesitate to contact us.
