experience with the de t ec t ion and evaluat ion of t he Pike vented f r a c t i o n

has improved our perspec t ive on the problems of d e t e c t a b i l i t y a t long-

range and our confidence t h a t mosr o f the debris is deposited c lose in t o

the poLnt sf detonat ion.

The ob jec t ives of the experimenr remain the same:

1. Experimental determination of the vented f rac t fon .

These data are p a r t i c u l a r l y important to t h e normalization of the t h e o r e t i c a l r e l a t i o n s h i p s which have been derived t o relate depth of

burial t o t h e vented frect,ion for il given medium. A inodification of

the experimental plan will be made to p e r m i t added amphasis on the

deteminat ion of the a i rborne source s t rength wi th in a mile or two

oE ground zero.

with nuclear explosives. Further, the data will always be suspect because oE (a) the uncertainties in the application of scaling

relationships and (b) the differences in t h e nature of &he explosions conducted with E1E: and NE. 3. Measurement of physical effects of the explosion at intermediate and

long range.

It is always possible that effects other than those attributable to

radioactivity may be the l imit ing feature of some speciffc Plowshare

applicarion. ]In order to reduce the probability of there being surprises

associated with the physical effects OR future applications of nuclear explosives it is important to continue the accumulation of data which

define the limits and the magnitude of suck effects.

XI. C ~ A R I S O N wrm PIKE Pike was not a cratering shot nor was it 8 planned vent; as 8 result any

attempt at camparison of Pike and Sulky must be restricted to comparing the history of the vented radioactive debrfs.

1. The mechanism of release of radioactive material from these two

shots is quite different. Pike is more comparable to the release of material through a long, small diameter pipe than to kt venting of

material through overburden as it wvee upward and outward during the formation of 8 crater. in particle size distribution. The evidence is that the vented fraction from Pike contained a larger percentage of its activity on small particles

than would be expected for Sulky. The result in such a case would be that

Sulky would deposit a larger fraction of the vented activity closer to ground zero, or to put i t another way, t h a t 8 smaller fraction of the

vented activity should be carried to long d€stances.

2. The vented fraction on Sulky i s expected to be a factor of 5 to 10

There is likely to be a considerable difference

smaller than for Pike. Further, Sulky would be shot only under

meteorological conditions which would p r o v i d e the maximum p o s r i b l e

were northerly, with minimum velocity and directional shear, and of appreciable speed. which have been established for conduct of the Sulky experiment.

These are precisely opposite to the conditions

A careful choice of wind structure, combined with Sulky's smaller

vented fraction, should reduce the probability of detection at any border to insignificance; in part because of the di lut ion with distance, and i n part because of the small percentage probability of reaching either Mexico or the Pacific Coast if shooting is restricted to the 235 TO 165 degree sector (see data included in Table I, as extracted from the U W B publication, "A Climatology of 700 mb Trajectories Originating at the Ncvada Test Siteb" dated March 1954).
