DESCRIPTION
Letter sent to Australian schools, Dec 2013. www.phonics-australia.com.auTRANSCRIPT
Dec 10 2013
Fellow Educators,
www.phonics-australia.com.au member area launches, for those using the Speech Sound Pics (SSP)
Approach, this Friday - along with the online lessons for dyslexic students on Sunday
www.myspeedyssp.com
Please share the latter link with any students not yet reading and spelling to grade level- these
lessons are to use at home for students age 7+ so that they reach grade level over the holidays. $15
per month.
All resources needed for sequential, explicit teaching of the alphabetic code- with 47 speech sounds
covered, and all of their spelling variations (approx 150).

There is a poem or song for every Spelling Cloud, putting these spelling choices into meaningful
context. New resources added weekly.
This lesson planning page on the new teacher resource site shows lesson planning structure.
If you have a daily 90 minute/ 2 hour slot then you can complete all reading, writing and spelling
activities.

SSP assessment tools mentioned on the above page.
It is strongly recommended that you only PM Benchmark at the end of terms 2 and 4.
Data from the past 12 months, from parents using SSP at home, with a school not using SSP in the
classroom, has been an average increase of 19 levels in 18 weeks - all starting at levels 2-6 and aged
7+. PM readers not used at all during the learning process - this was by SpeedySSP at home
(especially the SSP Spelling Strategy) with SSP Book Tier. Videos from those parents (non teachers)
and students uploaded over the Summer holiday. Data published in 2014.
Research shows that a whole team using a consistent approach (one program, rather than mix and
match) brings about better results, and especially as all resources interlink, and skills and concepts
become meaningful. Daily 2 hour lessons plans uploaded over the holidays, for those who want a
complete step by step. Incorporates all reading, spelling and writing activities. As these are based on
student level they are relevant to any primary or high school class. Screen the student, and start on
their SSP Level.
As you will know every session is at the student's SSP level. Over 200 readers are now available, so
that they are reading at their level. This means no surprises when trying to decode, so that the brain
can flow and visualise. Children can’t comprehend and critically analyse without being able to
decode at least 85% of the text. Even from the first levels children are able to problem solve during
SpeedySSP sessions (brain training sessions ideal for dyslexic students). This is when they gather
information from the text quickly, to make correct choices.
SpeedySSP sessions are to speed up thinking and working memory, as well as to ensure that children
can rapidly decode and encode all words in the English language. Using SSP children can decode 99%
of the English language, compared to 50% within traditional phonics programs. There is only one
'rule' as the approach centres around the speech to print system, not the other way around.
Spelling/ phonics rules only needed when programs start from print. Accents catered for within SSP.
RWI books are used for Guided Reading activities as adapted to link with explicit phonics teaching
for spelling.
If other programs are used, follow the SpeedySSP session (20 minutes per day) for phonemic
awareness and explicit phonics teaching so that you are dyslexia friendly. This can be used as a stand
alone for students not reading and spelling to above grade level.
If you have local Kindys feeding into your school please ask them to look into the new SSP Orange
Level - which is pure phonemic awareness within a play based approach. This will be more likely
welcomed than phonics.
Research shows that if children enter school with good phonemic awareness they will not struggle to
read and spell regardless of methods used by the school. Phonemic awareness needs to be explicitly
taught.

SSP Book Tier shown here www.phonicsreaders.com.au for virtual book tier and also hard copy
readers. Includes Fitzroy and Dandelion, organised into SSP Level.
If you have a teacher interested in trialling SSP we have a central database set up to gather data
(school and pupil names replaced with codes). They will be sent a training video if you have no
budget for training (this can be conducted with me face to face via Skype) and then engage with
either myself or a trained SSP tutor on a weekly basis, within an online mentoring program. They can
follow the sequential lessons (each child working at their level) or use the lesson plan guides. If they
need to submit a writing piece for evidence, for example, as other teachers are doing within a set
task from C2C, then simply slot this in when needed.
New facebook page for those using SSP in classrooms in 2014 is
www.facebook.com/speechsoundpics
Licence to use all SSP resources, including all new ones as they are developed, $895 per year. SSP
Book Tier is free.
