What is Stats about?

using history to predict the future

to be awarded University Entrance, you must:

achieve at least 14 credits from a range of approved standards

and no, I will not change my mind about that.

this course gives you the opportunity to achieve up to 12 credits through internal assessment. This means you have to do the external exam!

Why study Stats?Business management uses detailed stat and modelling analysis of data from all parts of business operation - sales (what, how much, to who, when etc), costs (wages, rent, buildings, product purchase, manufacture, transport etc) and market researchGovernments (national, regional and local) use statistics to model future needs, to help them develop new policiesScience depends upon statistics - examples include medical drug trials, experimental observations, population studies.

the standards for the course are...

AS91586 Apply probability distributions in solving problems External, 4

AS91582 Use statistical methods to make a formal inference Internal, 3

AS91580 Investigate time series data Internal, 4

AS91585 Apply probability concepts in solving problems External, 4

this is based on commerce - eg sales records - but is also useful for science data analysis

the most important standard, it uses historic data and develops probability theory. Often used for scientific trial data analysis and popular surveys.

Conceptually rewarding, it studies relationships between distinct qualities.

Explores alternative distributions in probability theory and practice, with different data types.

Very visual and straight-forward. You get to draw Venn Diagrams and learn basic set theory.

AS91581 investigate bivariate data Internal, 4
