United against aggressive plantThe fight against yellow bristle grass has geared up in Taranaki with key agencies and organisations uniting to confront the threat to the region’s agricultural industry.

The Taranaki Regional Council, the New Plymouth, Stratford, and South Taranaki District Councils, the New Zealand Transport Agency, Federated Farmers, Dairy NZ, and roading contractors are working together with the aim of minimising the impact of this aggressive annual seeding plant.

Taranaki Regional Council’s Environment Services Manager Steve Ellis said yellow bristle grass is a prolific seeder and can produce seeds within four weeks of germination.

Each seed head can contain up to 200 seeds, and spreads through roadside mowing, stock movement, supplementary feed, roadside grazing, and agricultural contracting machinery. The invasive weed is capable of reducing pasture productivity by up to 20 percent.

“It can quickly infest areas of bare ground, especially during and following drought conditions, and become dominant in a paddock.

“While it is palatable to livestock during the vegetative stage, it has poor nutritive values and stock avoid it after

seed heads emerge — usually from mid-January to May,” he said.

“Stock health issues are also of concern as there’s evidence that seed heads can cause lesions and ulcers to the mouths of grazing cattle.”

Yellow bristle grass was first recorded in Taranaki in the 1930s but has had an increased and significant impact in the region in recent years.

The first step in the campaign against yellow bristle grass is identifying locations of infestations. The next stage will be a targeted awareness campaign offering advice and information on controlling yellow bristle grass.

People are urged to contact the council on 0800 736 222 or email [email protected] if they want to know more.

Entries open for Ballance Awardsby Denise Gunn

Entries for the 2015 Ballance Farm Environment Awards opened this month and strong interest is expected in the competition.

The annual contest, which recognises sustainable land management, environmental awareness, good business practices, and social and community responsibility, has become a major event on the rural calendar. The competition is facilitated by the New Zealand Farm Environment (NZFE) Trust.

NZFE acting chairman Simon Saunders said the 2014 Ballance Farm Environment Awards drew an excellent standard of entries and he is expecting strong interest in the 2015 competition.

Farmers and horticulturists are eligible to enter the competition with several award categories considered by the judging panel. The contest now operates in 10 regions throughout the country and past-entrants have described their participation as a highly worthwhile experience.

“Most people enter because they want feedback on how their farming or horticultural operation stacks up in terms of environmental sustainability,” said Mr Saunders.

“Entrants also seek ideas from competition judges and other participants on how to improve the

sustainability of their businesses.” Mr Saunders said the awards prove that sound environmental practices and good business management go hand in hand.

Farmers who participate in the competition are also encouraged to share ideas and innovations with the wider farming community.

“You don’t have to have the best looking farm in the district to enter.

“Regional competitions offer a host of category awards, and you only have to be performing well in one area to have a chance of picking up an award.”

The judging process is conducted in a relaxed, friendly manner, with judges taking climatic factors into account.

“In the past we’ve found that farmers can be reluctant to enter if their farm has been affected by drought,” said Mr Saunders.

“But the judges know that severe climatic events are all part of farming and they will look beyond this at the wider picture.” The 10 regional supreme-award winners from around the country will be honoured at a national sustainability showcase next year. A national winner will be announced at

A fter the success of their first workshop, eight more have followed and membership has grown to 140.

The group, founded by Federated Farmers Taranaki president Bronwyn Muir, and Shonagh Hopkirk, aims to bring together women (and men) who

live and/or work on the land. People living in urban areas are also welcome to join.

“Bronwyn saw a need for a series of information sharing events for lifestyle block/smallholders as there weren’t any forums to specifically support this target audience,” said Shonagh.

“With the rise of families moving out from town to a plot of land in the country, especially in the areas surrounding New Plymouth, the urban/rural mix is an ever-growing demographic.”

Shonagh said although some people have rural experience, or the benefit of family members to call on, others are learning as they go.

“Many farming-industry topics are just as important for owners of what we commonly call lifestyle blocks, as they are for larger farming enterprises.”

The group’s organisers also endeavour to improve communication and assist in breaking down any barriers that exist between farmers and lifestyle block owners.

A wide variety of hands-on and informative workshops are held every six to eight weeks with guest speakers or tutors.

Taranaki LandGirls have rolled up their sleeves and grown from strength to strength since their initial get-together over a year ago.

“Events include a series of information-sharing presentations on relevant farming industry topics,” said Shonagh.

Some of these topics have covered National Animal Identification Tracing (NAIT), river and stream management, pest and weed control, workshops on basic sheep care, fence and water pipe repair, calf-raising, fertiliser and soil tests.

As many of the group’s members have full-time employment away from their property, events are alternated between mid-week evening meetings and weekend half-day activities.

Events are publicised through electronic, print and social media, as well as flyers, newsletters and newspapers.

Shonagh said members can choose which events to attend and the turnout varies at each. “However, we now have a core group that support most events, as well as those who just come to those sessions they are interested in, or that are relevant to their situation.

“We also welcome new members and visitors at each session.”

Events are held either at a local hall, or at a member’s home or property.

“We all enjoy seeing what other people are doing with their property,” said Shonagh.

“It also works well having small/medium sessions in different areas of the region.”

A small entry fee is charged per event to cover administrative costs.

V alerie and her husband Alois took over the rural delivery contract in 2010. Swiss-

born Alois, a former dairy farmer and courier, delivered the mail until Valerie took over the reins the following year. The couple also operate Whanganui Tours, transporting tourists to and from destinations in the valley, working closely with other tour operators in the locality.

The day starts early collecting mail and supplies before picking up tourists and passengers in Wanganui. The

Mullers minibus navigates the scenic river valley on a daily basis, covering 180km on the only road that runs through the valley. All types of supplies are delivered, ranging from toilet paper, drench, to lawn mowers. Locals often catch a ride with Valerie to get them to and from Wanganui.

Valerie said the most unusual delivery she has made was a farm hand and his dog, which had been attacked by a wild pig. Plenty of quirky letterboxes, including canoes, microwaves, ovens

and refrigerators, provide inklings into the locals’ sense of humour. Valerie once had to search for one particular letterbox and found it consisted of a box hidden away under a bush.

With a minibus load of tourists, Valerie offers a full commentary along the way pointing out various places of interest. The valley is a treasure trove of cultural, scenic and historical sites, with hidden surprises around every bend of the river and the road.

As the longest navigable river in New Zealand, the Whanganui River was once bustling with riverboats which were used to provide transport between Wanganui and Taumarunui for people, livestock and building materials.

The Whanganui River Road opened in 1934 and road access began to signal an end for the riverboat services. The

last riverboat made its final journey up the valley in 1959. The road itself requires ongoing work. Signs on the roadside indicate the height of the Whanganui River during large storms. Cyclone Bola in 1988 is remembered by a painted line on a shed door, many

metres above the river.Slips on the road

are quite common on the windy road and sometimes motorists can only sit and wait until they are cleared.

Valerie said staying out of the mud has been quite a challenge at times.

Several small settlements in the valley have two names — biblical and Maori. Jerusalem, also known as Hiruharama, was home of New Zealand poet James K Baxter from 1969-1972, and his final

“There is never a dull moment on this road,” Valerie says.

resting place. It is also where Mother Aubert established the Sisters of Compassion convent. The sisters are guardians of St Joseph’s Church and the convent, working together with the local tangata whenua.

Valerie has met plenty of interesting people during her work as a rural postie in the valley, with no two days ever the same. She said the most unusual character she has come across was an 83-year-old Maori man who became her friend.

“Great friendships and trust with our local people have been formed with daily delivery of goods, medicine

and everyday needs. Trust is a priority between us,” she said.

Farmland and small orchards are scattered throughout the valley. The largest farm, Morikau Station, covers 2400ha effective, and is a well-established sheep and beef breeding operation. A centennial celebration in 2011 marked 100 continuous years of farming this multiple-owned block of Maori land. Valerie never tires of the ever-changing scenery found in the Whanganui River Valley, and the beauty of the river, hills and surroundings.

“There is never a dull moment on this road,” she said.

Better building starts with fundamentalsWe all know that to begin a job with a blank slate means ‘doing it from scratch’ or ‘building from the ground up’.

But it’s a lesser known fact that both these sayings predate modern building techniques by thousands of years. The first refers to scraping away the topsoil to expose a solid, rocky foundation, while the second comes from the times when new buildings were often constructed on the foundations of earlier structures.

To build ‘from the ground up’, then, is to be utterly sure of the quality of the job, leaving nothing to chance.

These days it doesn’t take armies of peasant workers or teams of oxen to get the job done. Preparing a solid foundation is more often left to skilled excavator drivers, while heavy trucks bring in concrete to be pumped into place.

Still, we can look back even further in terms of the fundamentals of a

build, to another meaning entirely of ‘starting from scratch’ — the ancient Greek and Roman practice of architects scratching initial designs onto a wax tablet with a stylus. These days it’s more likely to be a magnetic stylus and an iPad.

From the very start, it’s always been a good idea to consult with professionals. Whether they are designers and engineers working with weights, measures and sketches, or the people you trust to turn the soil, pour the concrete, or add the finishing touches, the landowner’s version of doing things ‘from the ground up’ should always involve digging deeper into the credentials and qualifications of his build partners. For that very reason, we’ve gathered some of the best on these pages!

SPOTLIGHT ON New PlymouthDistrict of diversity

by Joanne Speechly

On the west coast of the North Island an estimated 74,000 people call the New Plymouth district home.

It covers land from Mokau to Okato and includes the city of New Plymouth, the towns of Waitara, Inglewood, Urenui, Okato, Bell Block and Oakura, and many other smaller rural communities.

Known for its rugged coastline, world class surfing spots and the majestic Mt Taranaki, New Plymouth offers numerous activities and a unique opportunity to snowboard, ski, water ski and surf all in the same day.

Taranaki is the second largest dairy farming region in New Zealand but the area also fosters several other significant industries, including heavy and light engineering, manufacturing, horticulture and tourism. New Plymouth

is also the centre of New Zealand’s oil, gas and petrochemical industry.

“Time and time again, visitors to the region remind me how lucky we are to live here,” says New Plymouth district mayor Andrew Judd. “From the award-winning Coastal Walkway and central-city Pukekura Park to all the galleries, museums and wonderful events on offer,

I know we’ve got something special here to share with everyone.”

In 2010, the city of New Plymouth was chosen as one of two walking and cycling ‘Model Communities’ by the government and received $3.71 million to invest into infrastructure and community programmess to boost walking and cycling.

“No matter how beautiful a region is however, it is the people who make a place enjoyable and friendly. We’re lucky to be a home for people who hail from more than 70 nations, which adds to the rich culture of Taranaki,” adds Mr Judd.

New life on the farmThe agricultural annual baby boom is underway and the pressure is on as calves and lambs dominate the farming landscape over the next two months. Although a harrowing time for the farmer we all hope and pray the weather is at least favourable.

ADVERTOR IA L

One of the really beautiful things during this period is the new life that abounds on the farms — it is a period of renewed hope for the future of farming and for our country overall. As you move around the farming areas listening to those new little voices and watching them running and playing, it gives a marvellous feeling of hope and prosperity for everyone.

From Agrissentials’ point of view we not only see the wonder of this new life above the soil but also, as the temperature rises, we recognise the awakening and multiplication of the soil life; the micro-organisms and the macro-organisms especially the worms

within the soil. Here is another level of life that also needs recognition as it is an integral part of farming. All life above the soil is intrinsically coupled to the microscopic life and worms and their recycling system below the soil.

The heavy use of chemical over the past 30 years has seen the destruction of this unique soil recycling system resulting in soil erosion and pollution of farms and our environment. Agrissentials however, specialises in rebuilding the soils recycling system with our multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers which reinstate fertility, health and productivity back into the soil. Top soil is natural capital which has

supported life on the planet since the day life began. Today, globally, destruction and erosion of this once bountiful natural capital is becoming a major concern. It is time to turn this situation around and begin using products that not only keep production pumping, but also, through the recycling system build topsoil depth through the activities of the micro-organisms and their ability to build humus (which is carbon) which is topsoil.

Once you get this microbial wealth, living breathing and multiplying throughout your soil your farming world will begin to change to a point where you will quietly step off the chemical-treadmill and get back to real farming: producing new life below the soil and healthy new life above the soil — the best of both worlds.

One of our Southland farmers who has been on our program for six years or more, got out his mower to cut the hay: only metres into the job he broke both belts on the mower. He went and bought two new belts but then decided to call in a contractor to cut the grass. The comment from the contractor after cutting was that it was the rst time ever on that tractor that he had had to drop to a lower gear to get the job done. Here is the proof, that if you can get the soil right, the grass will be more nutritious, with a thicker sword, resulting in strong healthy animals which should fetch a better price. It all comes back to the soil.

Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers are just that: bringing life, fertility, health and vitality back to the soil for a better farming world. New Zealand’s isolation, soils and weather make us a strong agricultural and horticultural country, giving us the opportunity to be the best producers on the planet. Look after the soil and the soil will look after the farm and the farm will look after you and yours.

Putting the passenger rstby Andy Bryenton

There’s a sense with some UTV off-roaders on the market that one feature alone has been chosen as the engineering goal of the exercise.

Whether it’s simply providing the most power, or the greatest speed, or the biggest towing capacity, this kind of arms race can end up very much like the one being waged by the ‘big three’ German car makers for maximum horsepower.

That’s why the Yamaha Viking is proving so popular. It’s not focussed on simply stump-pulling torque or flat-out speed. Yamaha’s engineers have taken it back to first principles, making everything about the new Viking centre on the driver and passengers.

That’s passengers, plural, because one of the first things Yamaha realised was that many jobs around the farm need more than two pairs of hands. With three seats in line at the centre of the chassis and frame, the Viking builds out from the concept of comfort for the crew on board. This led to the development team choosing a high ground clearance double wishbone front and rear suspension setup - because while Yamaha’s engine choice is not all about big figures, the Viking still packs a punch.

Yamaha have drawn on their motorcycle building experience, installing a water cooled four stroke

single cylinder in the Viking. This 686cc mill provides an excellent power and torque curve, assisting in smooth handling. More importantly perhaps, the big one-pot engine allows accurate and natural-feeling engine braking, a safety feature in its own right. The choice of a large capacity one cylinder motor also means bags of pulling power, giving the Viking over 650kgs towing capacity and nearly 300kgs on the tray.

Farmers key infoot and mouth detection

Prevention against one of New Zealand’s biggest biosecurity risks — foot and mouth disease — has been given a leg-up with specialist training in Nepal.

DairyNZ veterinarian Anna Irwin recently returned from Kathmandu, Nepal, where she was part of a five-day training camp run by the European Commission for the Control of Foot and Mouth Disease.

She says the experience highlighted the pivotal role New Zealand dairy farmers play in detecting the disease early.

“I found seeing the disease invaluable,” says Anna. “But it also brought home the importance of being alert on farms. Anyone working with livestock on a daily basis is in the best position to be our number one surveillance force.

“Foot and mouth is one of our biggest biosecurity risks, so we need to be prepared.”

Farmer vigilance and the use of New Zealand’s biosecurity systems, such as NAIT (National Animal Identification and Tracing), will help prevent an outbreak.

“It’s important that farmers keep their NAIT records up-to-date. Animal tracing and accurate records are vital in any disease investigation and the

ability to reliably trace animals saves so much time.”

“Nepal doesn’t have anything like our system in place, which makes it much harder to manage and control the disease when animals move around so much.”

If FMD were to reach New Zealand, it would damage the country’s trade reputation and halt virtually all exports of meat, animal by-products and dairy products until at least three months after the disease was considered eradicated.

Led by the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Nepal trip provided training in the clinical recognition, diagnosis, investigation and control of FMD.

“Foot and mouth is widespread in Nepal and outbreaks occur frequently there,” says Anna. “The training gave veterinarians, government officials and other rural professionals from foot and mouth-free countries some of the skills required for a potential outbreak.”

Farmers should report anything they are unsure about to the biosecurity line by calling 0800 80 99 66.

Stress and tracksLast month I showed you some evidence that stones are not the likely culprit of making cows lame.

Coming back to my original question where I asked to be shown some real evidence of stones being a cause of haemorrhage — well, I still haven’t been convinced. I am thinking up ways to show more evidence to prove my point and I will keep you informed on that one, so stay tuned.

If stones are not the cause of the bruising, why does it make a difference if we improve our tracks?

Most farmers tell me that after they have spent money on their tracks they have less lame cows.

It is also scientifically shown that bad tracks and bad animal handling increase lameness. That seems pretty good evidence that stones are the culprit of bruises. Or does it? I don’t believe so. There is more to tracks than the stones on them.

Like I said in an earlier article, I believe that the main contributors to lameness in New Zealand are nutrition and stress. So how can a bad track

cause stress on cows? Well, there are a few things that I can think of.

Firstly, if cows don’t flow well because of bad tracks then the likelihood for pushing cows is greater. I know you don’t have to have bad tracks to push cows, and many of you have had experience with people who push cows even on good tracks, but pushing does cause stress. Cows are ‘flight’ animals — their instinct tells them to run from trouble. Can you imagine what it must be like for a cow when they can’t get away fast enough? That is stress. Secondly, another stress is caused by not getting enough resting time. No, I am not suggesting resting areas along the tracks with an umbrella and a café. I am saying that when the tracks are bad, the cow flow is slower. This means that cows take longer to commute to and from the cow shed and as a consequence will spend less time in the paddock resulting in less time for laying down

and resting. It is scientifically proven that there is a strong correlation between resting time and lameness. Just look at a well fed herd in the paddock. What are the cows doing? They graze, lie down, drink water or socialise.

Look at cows on the track or in a holding yard. What are they doing? They are walking for long periods of time and standing still in the yard.

Both of those behaviours are unnatural for cows to do for the length of time that we force them to do it. That is stress.

So, if we improve the tracks, we improve the cow flow, resulting in more resting time.

For example, if you could take 10 minutes off each walk then you have given the cows 40 minutes more each day for lying down, because cows walk four times a day if you are milking them twice a day. Of course, this is not the only reason why we have lame cows, but it is certainly an important factor.

Low-cost mastitis preventionIf you’re a dairy farmer you know that mastitis is the one of the biggest threats to the wellbeing of your herd and to the quality and volume of the milk they produce.

If you’re a dairy farmer you know that mastitis is the one of the biggest threats to the wellbeing of your herd and to the quality and volume of the milk they produce.

And as commodity prices drop, the last thing you need is more losses caused by cows producing less milk than they are capable of. Mastitis is one the leading causes of production drops. If it becomes present in your herd it can cost you a lot of money. So combating it is a top priority for most farmers. Prevention is the best solution and SurePulse™ provides the best low-cost solution.

There are alternatives but they have their downsides. For example, treating cup slip problems with aggressive liners solves short-term issues. But it creates other problems which are not immediately apparent. The cluster will hold to the cow but the damage and teat swelling is long-term and costly.

Aggressive liners also allow excessive ballooning and cause damage to teats. The SurePulse™ system reduces,
