Animal welfarefund boosted

by Paul Campbell

Overlooked by many within the fine details of last month’s budget from the government was a $10 million package over four years designed to beef up New Zealand’s animal welfare systems — supporting a new law that too, has just taken effect.

Primary Industries minister Nathan Guy said the investment will support changes in the new Animal Welfare Amendment Act, which passed into law last month and some of the money will go to informing the industry of those changes.

“Some of this funding will go towards creating targeted education that ensures the right people know what is required of them.

“As well as strengthening the enforcement of animal welfare requirements, the investment will also contribute to the SPCA’s work in animal welfare. In particular, it will further support its compliance function.”

“New Zealand already has a strong reputation for animal welfare,” Mr Guy says.

“However, the expectations of consumers and society are constantly changing and our farming systems are continually evolving. This investment will support changes in the new Animal

Welfare Amendment Act, which passed into law this month.

These changes have made animal welfare obligations clearer, more transparent and easier to enforce.

They will also ensure New Zealand is well placed to maintain its strong reputation and world class animal welfare system into the future.”

The new funding will go towards developing new regulations through the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, improving compliance and enforcement capability and managing the welfare of animals in a civil defence emergency.

“Our primary sector makes a critical contribution to our economy. New Zealand earns around $25 billion a year by exporting animal products such as meat, milk and wool.

“Our global reputation as a safe food producer depends on us continuing to produce animal products within strong animal welfare standards.”

Pop him in your mobile home, rural cottage or holiday bach or even in front of your old open fire. Sparky will chuckle away & brighten your day.

National bird receives help from farmers

by Denise Gunn

The recent announcement of $11.2 million in the 2015 Budget to protect the Kiwi and save the population from extinction has been welcomed by Federated Farmers.

Federated Farmers pest management spokesperson Chris Allen said this money will go a long way to help landowners to further protect our national bird.

“Farmers are natural conservationists and with the government investing in further Kiwi breeding programmes on public and private land, farmers will be able to use their skills to raise and release many more Kiwis into the wild.

Mr Allen said rats, stoats and ferrets are a big part of the problem for Kiwi.

“Many farmers already undertake pest management programmes at their own expense to combat local pest problems, and by working with the Crown, regional councils and others there is a much better chance of achieving pest suppression and re-establishment of the Kiwi population and its growth.”

There are now less than 70,000 Kiwis in the wild with the population falling two percent each year, with rats, stoats and ferrets the main culprits. The new initiative aims to turn the two percent

annual loss into at least a two percent annual increase.

Kiwi breeding programmes on public and private land will be scaled up.

Conservation minister Maggie Barry said the existing breeding programme will be expanded to raise more birds to a survivable weight, in the safety of predator-free islands and sanctuaries.

“As a nation, we are expert farmers, and I want to encourage more people to become involved in Kiwi conservation efforts across the country.”

The Department of Conservation will work with independent trust, Kiwis for Kiwi, to help boost community involvement.

Mr Allen said farmers can find out how to get more involved through programmes such as Kiwis for Kiwi.

“Farmers can become a part of the community effort by first of all finding out if they have wild Kiwi on their land, making sure any dog on their property has received Kiwi avoidance training, and covenanting wetlands,

native forest and shrub land.” Mr Allen also encourages farmers to look into all the opportunities available to them, including the funding for private

landowners through the Biodiversity Condition and Biodiversity Advice funds as well as the Nga Whenua Rahui (covenants) for Maori landowners.

Mark is the third generation to farm the Mangatoki property. His grandparents, Michael and Mary, bought the original 45 hectare farm in 1914 and their two sons, one of them Mark’s father, later farmed the property.

After working in the banking industry and freezing works, Mark returned to the farm and made his way up the ladder to become a 50/50 sharemilker.

He and Jacqui bought the farm in 1992, and a neighbouring property a few years later. The farm now totals 212 hectares with a milking platform of 167 hectares.

The Gardiner Partnership’s 618-cow operation is divided into two herds, depending on each cow’s age and condition. Jacqui said the herd was originally Jersey cows. It now includes

Friesian, Friesian cross, and Kiwi cross.Although the majority of the herd stays on the farm all-year-round, close to 200 cows winter on a 35 hectare run-off located three kilometres away.

“Great soil (Egmont loam) but we stand off cows when possible in the wet,” said Mark.

The farm, which is mostly flat land with some rolling hills, receives an annual rainfall of 1,200mm.

“New grasses are planted and pugging is prevented but repaired quickly,” he said.

Last season the farm produced close to 294,000kgMS and BFEA judges noted that this figure is well ahead of the district average. BFEA judges said good planning, an excellent team culture and ‘a long-term passion for the farm’ were key factors in this success.

“This is a very well developed farm which is immaculately presented,” they said.

The team’s ’outstanding’ approach to pasture management also caught the judges’ attention.

“Pasture management is a feature of this property, farm walks are regular and grazing rounds are determined by the number of days it takes from grazing to the third leaf stage,” said the judges.

To provide for the increasing summer dry spells, and to supply the herd with plenty of fresh, green feed, the team have replaced turnip crops with chicory. Palm kernel expeller (PKE), soya bean hull and maize grain are also fed out to the herd.

Over the past few years, close to three kilometres of waterways on the farm have been fenced and the stream banks planted.

Shelterbelts have also been established to offer stock protection from the prevailing westerly wind.

Mark and Jacqui believe an open mind to innovation and good communication are key factors to running a successful dairy farming business. The judges observed this too.

“The Mullers have an excellent understanding of their business systems and profitability, and a very

good relationship with external professionals,” said the judges.

The couple acknowledge the work of past generations on the farm — both in the establishment and development. Continuing the family’s legacy through maintaining farm ownership in a sustainable, profitable way is Mark and Jacqui’s long term goal.

Mark said to see the results of past generations, and the work done today, is one of the most enjoyable aspects of working in the dairy industry.

Meantime the couple plan to continue developing the farm to become more efficient and sustainable.

“Making it an enjoyable place, to encourage and promote people coming through,” said Mark.

Mark, Jacquie and Conrad also received the Massey University Innovation Award, the LIC Dairy Farm Award, the PGG Wrightson Land and Life Award, and the Hill Laboratories Harvest Award.

shearer, and my grandma also a wool handler. I started learning the trade of wool handling when I was 14-years-old, and I went on my first course in 1988 to get certified,” said Deidre who is known as Aunty or Nanny Dre in the industry.

“I work for a contractor, moving around the country from property to property. I enjoy the challenge dealing with the animals and time frames.

“Wool handlers prepare the wool to go to the scourers to be processed, taking the fleece from the shearers as they finish each animal to sort. Every run is monitored through a wool classer.

The gang consists of eight or nine girls and six or seven shearers who have a routine they work to which keeps the system going. The contractor generally puts teams together with personality and skill levels spreading out evenly with experience, confidence and character.

“When we first arrive on a site we usually shear the main flock, starting with the ewes, then we move on to others such as hoggets and two tooths, the wethers and the rams.

“Often shearing is broken up and the gang will move to another client after the main flock is taken care of, allowing the farmer time to bring in the next mob. This can be a week apart, especially on big stations, because of the thousands of sheep in some places.

Deidre retrieves the fleece off the board after the sheep is shorn and places it on a table where oddments are removed and it is ready for the classer to check. It is then pressed into an average of 175–185 kilogram bales. The bales are then branded, pulled out and stacked.

They sweep the board for the shearers and keep every fleece separate to avoid any cross contamination.

Different prices are paid for oddments according to length and colour. Each section of wool has a different quality. She explains the lower the micron, the finer the wool — the better quality, which gives the best price and makes better clothing and products.

The work is seasonal, although some workers are full time and stay on to help

with crutching and other necessary jobs. “Some of the families we work for have been on these farms for many generations with properties passed down since the 1800s. They are really hard workers, and are always checking we are ok and that we have our needs met. It is a family atmosphere and we all look out for and support each other,” she says.

“Ultimately the end result is rewarding and the travelling side gives variety. Often the scenery is beautiful and we see places people never get to see. We can be looking out over the snow capped alps or a beautiful lake or up north we see the giant sand dunes and gorgeous forests like a kauri kingdom. The jobs can also take you overseas. “After hours there are still chores to be

done and cleaning our personal shearing equipment to keep it all up to scratch.

“I would definitely recommend others look at this as a career option. This line of work it is never boring. Training happens on site and there are also shearing and wool handling courses available.

We learn about back and body care and participate in stretching and warm ups before starting work, which helps reduce injury.

“When my children were young, my commitment to the job was limited and I didn’t travel so much.

“The nature of the job allowed me to work part time which made things easier as in those days there was no day care.

Agricultural contracting business with can do attitude

Family-owned and operated agricultural contracting business, C G Fleming Limited, is well-grounded in the Taranaki region, offering a comprehensive range of services.

Since the establishment of the business close to 30 years ago, the team have a longstanding history of supporting the agricultural industry.

Company directors, and brother and sister, Crockett and Lisa, inherited the business when their mother passed away in 2012. Both directors have hands-on roles in the company. Crockett oversees the entire operation while Lisa manages the accounts, nances and administrative paperwork. Lisa’s husband Matt also works for the company.

Crockett said his parents, David and Colleen, originally owned a

A D V E RT O R I A L

trucking business in Okato. “They sold that and started the agricultural contracting business.”

In the early days of the business, David began cleaning out ef uent ponds with a bulldozer.

“He sold the bulldozer and started buying tractors.”

The business now has four tractors and drivers, and a couple of sub-contractors.

“Although Dad is in renal failure, he chips in where he can and keeps an eye on us,” said Crockett.

From its Opunake base, C G Fleming Limited has expanded its services to

cover all cropping requirements and muck-spreading.

“Our main game is ef uent pond cleaning, both liquid and solid,” said Crockett.

“But we also do cropping from start to nish, including de-rocking.”

The muck-spreading aspect of the business is available throughout the region, cropping services cover south Taranaki, and ef uent pond cleaning is taken care of on the Opunake side of Mount Taranaki.

“If we can’t do it, we can nd someone who can,” said Crockett.

BIOBOOST® 6-2-0 THE FERTILISER FOR ALL SITUATIONS

NEW ZEALAND GROUNDSPREADING FERTILISERS’ ASSOCIATION

Annual conferenceThe 59th Annual Conference of the New Zealand Groundspread Fertiliser’s Association will be held at the Devon Hotel, New Plymouth from the 5th to the 7th July.

The Conference theme is Working for tomorrow, reflecting the forward thinking of the New Zealand fertiliser groundspreading industry. The conference will attract over 150 people to New Plymouth where a programme of interesting speakers and activities has been prepared by the local NZGFA branch. The Conference opens on the Sunday evening with a dinner where South District Council Taranaki Mayor Ross Dunlop will speak. In between business sessions some of the speakers will cover specific areas of interest to groundspreaders.

The impacts of aging in the workforce will be covered by Lorraine Webber an associate of Partners in Charge.

New Zealand along with the rest of the world has an ageing workforce. Demographic research indicates our

labour pool is shrinking due to people retiring and reduced birth-rates. Lorraine says the business and economic case for recruiting older workers is compelling, yet recent surveys have found that less than 40% of employers had any programme to attract or retain older workers.

Another compelling issue to the groundspreading industry is the prevention of truck roll–overs.

Bill Kidney, regional training manager at Southern Master Drive Services Ltd will address the issue of preventing truck roll-overs in the fertiliser groundspreading industry. Bill is a hands on trainer who believes that adequate and ongoing training is the first step in managing the risks inherent in driving heavy vehicles off road. Another speaker is Rod Abbot

the President of Australian Fertiliser’s Services Association. AFSA is the Australian equivalent of our NZGFA. Rod is the principal of Korumburra Lime & Spreading, which is a full service fertiliser dealership servicing high rainfall pasture producing principally dairy and beef farms.

As well Rod is principal of other business including a beef fattening operation close to Korumburra. Other

speakers will cover heavy transport regulation, health and Safety in the Workplace and the rural economy. As well the conference is scheduled to visit the Energy Plant at Motunui.

The NZGFA Conference will give visitors from all other parts of New Zealand the opportunity to see something of the province of Taranaki, sample some of the delights of the area and come away better informed.

Helping near and farA D V E RT O R I A L

After spending one month in Papua New Guinea watching the women cook three times a day on wood res too big for their pots, Paul McFarlane came up with an invention to help them in their daily life and called it the Rocket-Two-In-One.

These stainless steel rocket cookers are designed so water can be easily boiled for drinking whilst cooking.

It is ideal for natural disasters or anywhere that water must be boiled before being consumed.

The cooker is also great for camping and hunting as it is fuelled by small bush sticks in the base unit which holds approximately 12 litres of water, and when the re is going, a pot, frying pan or wok can be placed on the top of the cooker.

Paul has a background in engineering and mechanics and was inspired when he saw the original rocket cookers.

He and a friend came up with the idea of the water jacket when he was staying with a traditional village on the coast of Madang.

“Life is very basic there and there is no running water. They must dig wells by hand and sometimes these are not far away from long drops.

“The drinking water can get contaminated and there is a lot of sickness. This cooker gives people the chance to get away from that sickness.

“I have cooked a Papua New Guinea boil up on it using taro, banana and chicken. I cooked this for two hours and used approximately 1.4 kilo of sticks feeding seven people.

“It is a great product for any company wanting to donate to any charities as your name and logo can be etched into cookers.”

The Rocket-Two-In-One does not require a permit as the re in contained so it is ideal for hunters, campers, and even scouts.

Paul took a demo cooker with him the last time he visited Papua New Guinea and said there was already a lot of interest.

“We have kept the cookers cheap so families can afford them,” he says. “We are not doing these to make a lot of money but more to help people in their daily lives thus we have kept the price very low, a retail of NZ$149 each, making these more affordable to those in need.”

Need Small Engine Servicing?

Power without the price tagby Andy Bryenton

This month, a veritable super-fleet of agricultural machines from every major brand on Earth will descend on Mystery Creek, Hamilton, for the nation’s biggest farming expo.

Fieldays® crowds have come to expect innovation and versatility from the tractors which take pride of place at this three day showcase, and they won’t be disappointed.

But amongst the pack this year is a relatively new contender — a badge which offers something very much in

line with the Kiwi farming mentality. Mahindra tractors are gaining ground in public perception, and for good reason.

The world’s biggest producer of diesel engines, Mahindra is the name at the forefront of India’s agricultural revolution, providing the motive power to feed not just over one billion people, but also to drive a burgeoning economy.

Their 6110 range of tractors are a lesson in simplicity and practicality, eschewing both over complication and a big ticket price, and instead delivering just what farmers need — a robust, practical tool for day-to-day rural chores. Mahindra’s global reach means that this machine is actually manufactured in South Korea, a nation famous for its heavy industry.

The heart of the 6110 range is a 2.4 litre, 60 horsepower, four cylinder diesel engine that’s designed for intensive work.

Reliability has been prioritised, and ease of access for technicians means that servicing is no mammoth task either.

Built to keep on going in arduous conditions, this turbocharged mill is

mated to a 12x12 synchro shuttle transmission, allowing the 6110 to undertake a wide range of tasks, hook up to a whole shed full of implements, and even pack a handy loader bucket up front for silage handling and feed-out duties.

The ability to lift 1,600 kilos is just the beginning.

To put all that power to use, Mahindra have used a similar design aesthetic with the 6110 as they have with their

rugged Pik-up and Thar vehicles. That means solid, hard-wearing components, a heavy-duty chassis, and construction built to weather anything you can throw its way.

But, with a fully enclosed and air-conditioned cab, this practical tool is not without its comforts. Mahindra have made every effort to ensure that the most important component — the driver — is as immune from fatigue as all those moving parts.

“SEE US FOR YOUR SAFE MOTORING”Aiming for the topby Andy Bryenton

It’s been more than 80 years since Nissan — once known as Datsun — first produced a light commercial truck for tradespeople and industry.

In those intervening years there have been some big changes in the market, but two key factors remain evergreen. Those who are seeking a deck-backed workhorse still want to know that their chosen machine is going to last the distance.

As it has been for many of those decades, it’s a tough battle at the top in this hotly contested sector of the market.

Nissan’s 12th generation Navara builds on the success of their D40 model, though the 2015 ute offers rakish styling and a commitment to the new philosophy in light commercials — the concept of a vehicle which can carry heavy loads all week and still handles like a sedan when finesse is required.

Certainly, the Navara’s interior bears this out, with a car-like dual instrument cluster and a seven inch infotainment screen taking pride of place. The underpinnings of this vehicle guarantee heavy-duty

performance, with the Navara boasting 1,000kg payload capacity and triple that number when hooked up to the towbar. While a range of specifications will be available for the global market, it’s likely that Kiwi drivers will enjoy the same 2.3 litre advanced turbo diesel engine as their Australian counterparts, with up to 140kW and 450Nm of torque on tap.

The old Nissan adage of ‘payload and playload’ has been put into practice, with plenty of useful space on hand both within and without, and Nissan claim that the new Navara will offer gains in agility, ride and fuel economy when it arrives here in the very near future.

With a new facility in Thailand developed to produce this ute, a debut at the forthcoming Fieldays® is widely anticipated, following Nissan’s claims of a first quarter release.

In a market recently dominated by the Ford Ranger, and hotly contested by the ever-popular Toyota Hilux, car makers

are well aware that their A game is required to make an impression in the light commercial sector.

With bold exterior styling, ample power and the hint of an aggressively sharp price, expect this new contender to aim high, delivering both on-road and off-road capability to impress.

Indoor vs Outdoor Farming by John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

A D V E RT O R I A L

During the 1950’s New Zealand pastoral farmers were the best and most cost effective producers on our planet and the rest of the world was trying to emulate us.

New Zealand was the envy of the globe with our cows, sheep and beef being outdoors, grass fed and healthy, everyone wanted our products and our nancial position was very strong. The average dairy farm back then was 40 hectares, supporting up to 2 families and beef and sheep farms were all sizes, our country was pumping and from the ow on effects of our agricultural people, these were good times. The country towns were booming and everybody had a job and money was circulating.

Production was a lot easier then with plenty of grass out in front of the animals

and neighbours were helping one another to make hay and silage. It was a nice thing to be doing, the food was great and beer came in big bottles. Our scientists back then were setting new standards for agriculture; they were allowed to think for themselves, were genuinely independent and paid by the New Zealand taxpayer. By the mid 1980’s toxic chemicals had ltered into the farming communities and the chemical corporations had partnered up with our agricultural universities.

In the mid 1980’s I had set up business in central California growing and marketing Kiwano (horned melons) which

together with New Zealand production kept me in the global markets for 12 months of the year. During this period I came across, what is termed as industrial farming where animals are kept in huge sheds and feed and water is supplied to them. I rst recognised this system of production by the nostril biting stench of urine and excrement — not nice. You could smell it from miles away as you drove up the I5 freeway in California.

The latest gures out this year, for industrial dairy farming in the USA are; the average milking life for a cow is 20 months, they are milked 4 times per day, injected with hormones to produce more milk and because of con nement are regularly injected with antibiotics. The bulk of feed supplied to them is maize, (more than likely G.M.O maize). Grains are great for chickens and hogs but when fed to rumen animals the maize causes acidosis resulting in mastitis. During milking the pus from mastitis is going into the milk making it un t for human consumption — so much for industrial farming.

While I was in California last month, farmers were talking about going back to family size farms in an endeavour to produce better quality food for a better way of life.

We already have this system working in New Zealand. It creates more

employment for the families. Production on a family run farm will always outperform industrial farming.

The animals are better cared for and with good management and Rok Solid fertilisers farmers can keep grass out in front of the animals and produce all their grass supplement requirements on the farm, without disturbing the pasture, the soil or the bank balance.

First and foremost you need to remineralise your soils and pack those soils up with microorganisms and that’s what Agrissentials specialise in: multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. Plus free, non-toxic, real nitrogen: straight out of our atmosphere and stored in the organic matter of the soil, for release on demand by the plant — great for the farm, the environment and de nitely the pocket.

Call Agrissentials today and begin a new relationship with your farm — with June’s fantastic eldays’ special of 10% off all Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers, there’s never been a better time to give them a go.

Breach of banking code costs bank millionsAustralian customers and small businesses taking on their banks over rip-offs have won a massive boost after a landmark court ruling in the Australian Victoria State Supreme Court that requires financial institutions to stick to their own code of conduct.

The precedent setting judgement will cost the National Australia Bank Limited millions of dollars and has sparked a scramble from the banking industry as it means the banking code of conduct goes from being a guide to contractually binding.

The National Australia Bank suffered the defeat in court after it tried to argue that the industry’s self regulatory code of conduct has no legal effect.

It is ironical that our own New Zealand banks also claim that their code of banking practice is voluntary and is also not legally binding.

Australian Supreme Court Judge Justice James Elliott has ruled that the banking code has contractual force and because the National Australia Bank breached it, the bank could not recoup $6 million in loan guarantees for a series of Gold Coast property investments.

The judgement means that the National Australia Bank cannot enforce the guarantees made by Mr Rose. This judgement places a spotlight, not only on the Australian banking code of practice but also on the New Zealand Bankers Association code of

banking practice, as New Zealand Court decisions commonly follow Australian Court decisions, and those of Canada and the United Kingdom. Farmers of New Zealand support the New Zealand code of banking practice becoming enforceable in New Zealand law.

It is not good enough for banks to simply hide behind the code of banking practice, claiming it is a voluntary agreement based on goodwill and intentions.

The majority of New Zealand banks are owned by Australian banks, therefore the New Zealand banking code of practice should become legally enforceable in New Zealand where they operate and enjoy ever increasing profits.

Farmers of New Zealand also support the re-introduction into Parliament of the Farm Debt Mediation Bill which, in the past, has not been supported by the vast majority of politicians.

While in New Zealand the number of bank foreclosures has declined, economists warn that those who currently have extended themselves in taking out mortgage loans could be exposed in the next New Zealand

economic downturn, which may not be too far away if the Auckland real estate market funded by overseas immigrants crashes.

New Zealand Institute of Economic Research said even when mortgage sale numbers were high during the global financial crisis, New Zealand did not have the same default rate as

the United States, where homeowners could “post back their keys” if property values collapsed.

The reality is that you can’t walk away from your mortgage in New Zealand.

Most farm mortgagee sales end up with the farming families losing their livelihoods and all of their possessions.
