ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERSSave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthySave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

septi-cure is:

› Cost Effective › Easy To use › Improves Soakage

› Reduces Solids and Scums › Eliminates Nasty Odours › Reduces Costly Pump-outs

Breakthrough Product Developed for your Septic Tank

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years.

He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Awards forenterprising women

Enterprising Rural Women Awards entries are open for 2016. The ERWA offer women who run their own rural businesses the opportunity to showcase their innovative rural enterprise and gain recognition for their success.

Rural Women New Zealand invite entries from businesswomen who have strong entrepreneurial skills, are innovative and embrace new technology, and are active in their rural community.

The categories are: Emerging Enterprising Rural Woman Award — inspiring business or community leader; Innovative Enterprising Rural Woman Award — use of new technology and adapting to rural location; and Entrepreneurial Enterprising Rural Woman Award — business success in horticulture, agricultural, dairy, tourism or the rural sector.

“We look forward to hearing from many amazing businesswomen telling us about their achievements and how they have contributed to their rural community,” says Wendy McGowan, National President, Rural Women New Zealand.

To enter the awards, women have to own and operate a small business with less than 10 full-time equivalent staff, based in a rural area. The business must have been running for at least two years.

If in partnership, women must be an active partner of ideally 50 per cent or more in the business. Winner of last year’s supreme award Latitude Magazine’s Joanne Taylor, encourages

rural women to ‘just do it’ and enter the competition.

“It makes you look at all aspects of your business, from where you started, the journey of your business and seeing how far you have come. The support you get from the many people within Rural Women New Zealand is fantastic,” said Ms Taylor.

Each category winner receives $1,000 in prize money and a trophy, with a further $1,000 being awarded to the supreme winner who is judged as an outstanding rural businesswomen. For information go to www.ruralwomen.org.nz. Entries close Wednesday, August 31.

Sharemilking as a career pathThe DairyNZ and Federated Farmers-resourced Dairy Progression Pathways report, undertaken by AgFirst, explores the latest trends and statistics relating to sharemilking and examines the issues created by milk price volatility.

Federated Farmers Sharemilker Farm Owners’ Section chairperson Tony Wilding says the report shows opportunities for progression still exist but the career pathways have been changing and will continue to do so.

“While the number of traditional herd owning sharemilking (HOSM) agreements is slowly declining, the scale of them has increased and other options to invest in cows and land in equity ownership are continuing to emerge,” says Mr Wilding.

Richard McIntyre, Federated Farmers Sharemilkers’ Section chairperson agrees. “Sharemilkers need to be better equipped to survive the climate of volatility through contracts that are flexible, allowing them to manage risk.

“As sharemilking contracts evolve, it is important that the risk remains relative to reward. The report also highlights the need for improved due diligence prior to entering contracts. A number of failed sharemilking relationships can be traced back to a lack of due diligence at the start.”

The Pathways to Progression report shows that sharemilkers continue to make up 35 per cent of the industry, but HOSM has declined to 17 per cent from 25 per c0cx 1ent in 1995. This may be due to milk price variation and

the challenges it presents for sharemilkers and farm owners.

The number of farmers planning to purchase a dairy farm after sharemilking has also dropped to 47 per cent from 70 per cent 20 years ago.

DairyNZ’s strategy and investment leader for people and business, Mark Paine, said opportunities for progression include making the most of alternative business structures and undertaking better due diligence before taking on a new contract.

“Ref inement and improvement in these areas would lead to better outcomes for farm owners and sharemilkers,” says Mr Paine.

“Successful business partnerships typically share business plans and have a common understanding of the goals and directions of each other’s businesses.”

He says those currently sharemilking should take heart. “Our industry has many options for connecting with other

farmers and rural professionals who are willing to share their knowledge and experience. Share what you want to achieve in the future and position yourself to strike when the opportunity arises. Others have succeeded and opportunities are out there.”

After finishing high school and at his parents suggestion to study accountancy, Cliff spent

one year at university. However, the pull of the land proved too strong and he returned to the family farm.

The family’s Normanby farm was purchased by Cliff’s parents in 1966.

Cliff purchased a third of this property which is his current farm, Glenbrook, in 1982.

Glenbrook Farm covers 35 acres with a 20-acre milking platform. Large areas of the property have been planted in shelter belts and riparian areas. A 19-acre runoff, leased from the South Taranaki District Council, supplements the farm. This leased land has to be tendered every five years. Cliff uses the runoff to make hay and silage. He also runs some youngstock and dry cows on this land during winter.

Cliff said the area’s climate is near perfect for growing grass.

“Historically the area has been regarded as one of the best grass-

growing areas in the world. It’s not too hot in summer and not too cold in winter, and has spread-out rainfall.

“However the last few years have certainly put that on its head with long dry spells and very wet months in the winter.”

Cliff bought his first pedigree Jersey cow in 1979. He followed up this purchase with another, Lamorna Rovers Brenda, the following year. His entire Glenbrook herd descends from this cow.

“She was the great-granddaughter of the New Zealand record-priced cow in 1967, Big Hollow Choice Blondie, and established the C family at Glenbrook.

“The Big Hollow Stud was the top herd in New Zealand at that time.”

Cliff said the Glenbrook herd has been intensively linebred back to the C

family and that has helped intensify high production in the herd today.

Every animal at Glenbrook has a name starting with the letter C.

“Glenbrook is a very unique herd on the planet from any breed as it is a linebred herd, bred back to a cow.

“These days that is considered to be very rare and yet it has worked for me.”

Not only is Glenbrook the highest producing Jersey herd in New Zealand but it also has a very high standard of type.

In 2004–05, Glenbrook was the first Jersey herd to reach 600kgMS average. This past season, Glenbrook has been the first Jersey herd to reach 700kgMS average.

“For 2015–16 the factory production was 22,989kgMS from 33 cows

GLENBROOK FINAL COSMA HOLDS THENEW ZEALAND RECORD FOR MILK WITH 12,747 LITRES

or 697kgMS per cow. The herd averaged over 7,000 litres per cow at the factory and the herd test.”The Glenbrook herd is believed to be the first Jersey herd in New Zealand to reach these two milestones. The herd also includes record-breaking milk cows. “Glenbrook Final Cosma produced over 50 litres on her highest herd test. Her top milk record was 12,747 litres at five years which was the first and so far only Jersey record over 12,000 litres. Glenbrook Chief Cybil produced 929kgMS in 2014–15 with the highest fat and milk solid record for that season in New Zealand.

“My main enjoyment comes from breaking production records,” said Cliff.

“I love herd testing and have 12 herd tests per year, one every month.”

His main passion, however, is breeding pedigree Jersey cows. He has been a member of the Hawera Jersey Club since 1979 and also belongs to Jersey New Zealand. Six years ago Cliff decided to try and market straws from some of his bulls. “I was collecting from them for my own use and thought there might be other breeders interested in adding some production genetics to their herds breeding programmes.

“Since then I have sold straws from Northland to Southland and also in the United States and Australia through Glenbrook Golden Genetics,” said Cliff.

“I can offer bulls with great production, type, temperament and outcross genetics from generations of cows with outstanding production.”

Cliff has always had a goal to reach a herd average of 750kgMS.

“That will remain my goal as long as I can farm,” he said.

“If I do achieve that, then I will aim for 800kgMS herd average.”

Raised on a dairy farm in Okato, Ben decided early on that he wanted to be farmer. As soon as

he finished high school, he took up a job as a farm assistant in Taranaki. Work on a Manurewa dairy farm followed. Belinda was also raised on a dairy farm but initially set out in a career as a travel agent in Auckland.

The couple married in 2003 and set their goals for herd ownership while they were in the Auckland region. Living on Belinda’s income, they used Ben’s earnings to buy their first rental property in New Plymouth.

When they returned to Taranaki, Belinda continued her career in the travel industry whilst Ben managed a dairy farm, milking 300 cows.

Ben and Belinda bought another rental property in 2006 and two years

later sold both rentals to raise the finance for their herd.

“We originally invested in rental properties where we were fortunate enough to make enough money to start 50 per cent sharemilking 150 cows,” said Belinda.

“We stayed on that property for three years then progressed to 250 cows.”

Currently Ben and Belinda are into their third season 50 per cent sharemilking 680 cows on Dave and Adrienne Hopkins 235 hectare farm near Waitotara. The Hopkins and Price’s were also awarded the supreme title at this year’s Horizons Ballance Farm Environment Awards (BFEA). The farm employs two full-time staff members and one part-time employee.

owners,” said Belinda. BFEA judges said the couples have an excellent working relationship and their shared enthusiasm for the environment and the farm make it an outstanding place to live and work.

“We all care about our business, our industry and the people around us, and we have a passion and a drive to do what we do and to do it well.”

Ben said this season has probably been the biggest challenge for the couple so far in their career.

“We had a slow, wet start to the season, then a low payout, compounded with a drought and facial eczema.”

The couple said they also have a great team and support network around them, which challenges them and has also supported their business growth.

“We always plan for the worst and plan for the best,” said Belinda.

“We can only control what we measure and monitor.

“The rest is outside of our control and we always make sure we have time for ourselves off farm.”

The Hopkins bought the farm 22 years ago, converting the property to dairying.

Last season the farm produced 242,000kgMS. This year, with the drought and other factors thrown in, production figures dropped to 216,000kgMS.

Cows and weaners are wintered on the farm and replacements grazed off

for a year. The average rainfall in the area is 1,200mm but so far this year 900mm has been recorded.

“It has been the worst on record here,” said Ben.

“Generally we have dry summers but we can plan for those. We grew 1.8 tonne less dry matter in grass this year than last year, so that has really impacted us this season.”In previous years, 12 hectares of turnips

have been grown on the farm. “Last year we did six hectares of maize grown on the farm and bought in six hectares,” said Ben.

Dairy farming provides the Price’s with an ideal family lifestyle, enabling them to balance work and spending time with their two sons, Hayden (9) and Tobi (7). Ben and Belinda have also recognised the opportunities that have been put in front of them and enjoyed meeting

people along the way. Using their skills to give back to the dairy industry and community by assisting others to achieve their goals is part of Ben and Belinda’s strategy.

Belinda has a Primary ITO Diploma in Agribusiness Management and now teaches this qualification to students in South Taranaki. The couple believe they have a bright future with different opportunities now open to them.

To Be or Not to Be!A D V E RT O R I A L

The current model of agro-chemical production is well past its use by date and out of kilter with today’s consumer call for safe, certi ed, nutritious food produced in a sustainable and eco-friendly way.

Agro-chemical production cannot meet today’s new consumer demand, down grading its products to commodity market prices.

So, “To Be”, is to seriously look at the consumer request, and to be brave enough to make the shift to better production, better markets, better returns and a better farming lifestyle working with nature rather than against her.

“Not To Be”, I believe is not an option! Farming methods are changing all the time and some of those changes over the past 30 years have favoured the merchants at the farmer’s expense. Looking at that

past 30 years we have seen a move towards “synthetic farming” and it is not working. Farming is a natural process with a governed set of natural laws and equations, that if adhered to makes farming a lot more enjoyable and that’s how it should be — the chemical treadmill and its low payout has farmers stressed to the max, paying heavily for rescue remedies that need to be administered on a full time basis.

So, what is it going “to be”? “To be” what is it going “to be”! This is your choice. Remember fortune favours the brave. Here at Agrissentials we already

have the new model of fertility, based around Mother Nature’s laws and designed to remineralise our de cient top soils, regenerate new top soil and enhance the environment, all for the price of our fertilisers which are in-line with current fertiliser costs, but with all the added bene ts of building a multi-mineral, microbial rich, worm wriggling, water retaining soil, enhancing the farm and the environment.

In the mid 1980’s as an agro-chemical commercial grower of produce for the Japanese market, my squash plants failed to grow. This created a major change in my thinking, to a point where I made a move towards using more natural fertilisers and managing chemicals out of my spray program; focusing on supplying more mineral content to the plant, so that it would build its own immune system. What a difference that made, not only to the plants health, but to my health too!

There is no denying that our planet is in the midst of an ecological crisis. However, thanks to gravity, all the products needed to repair the system and especially the soils are still here on our planet.

Basically, the best top soils on our planet are made up of rock dust deposited on the plains and in the valleys through glacial movement. Here at Agrissentials we have sped that process up.

To grow a good healthy plant you need MINERALS — MICROBES — SUNLIGHT — WATER not one or two minerals, but a full spectrum of minerals in a completely natural form — not synthetic Not just one or two microbes, but a full array of micro-organisms in mega numbers. This is what we specialise in, multi-mineral, microbial rich fertilisers bringing health and vitality back to soils, plants, animals,

humans and the environment. Our fertilisers are live, living fertilisers which encourages worm life, which in turn increases mineral potency on average of 306% over all minerals taken through the worm’s gizzard and deposited in their castings. (Brookside laboratories research on worm castings).

There is a lot of freely available “natural capital” provided by Mother Nature for farming i.e. Topsoil, water, sunlight, micro-organisms, worms, bees, atmospheric minerals, being carbon in the form of C02, oxygen hydrogen and nitrogen all natural and non-polluting, however we are witnessing a lot of destruction of this natural capital through the use of agro-chemical production methods. Agrissentials safe certi ed system can restore and sustain this pool of free natural capital essential for farming.

Agrissentials have been BioGro certi ed since 1995. The transfer from chemical production to natural production is extremely simple. The only change is replacing the toxic soluble, synthetic minerals, for a full spectrum of Agrissentials natural minerals and Agrissentials ability to restore the essential natural capital that all farmers depend upon.

There is only one choice. So, call us today and get underway to natural farming and all the bene ts derived from this energised system. Call 0800 THE KEY, that’s 0800 843 539. Alternatively you can contact your best on earth fertiliser representative Ben Tippins on 021 738 601 to grab your special deal today.

Note: For the rst 100 callers prepared to change to a natural certi ed system, be it BioGro or Asura, we will hold our fertiliser pricing for the duration of the certifying period, which is three years.

BACK or NECK PAIN?

Inversion NZ Ltd0800 62 62 83www.inversionnz.co.nz

In 2006, a three and a half year medical study using the Teeter Hang-Ups was completed in the Regional Neuroscience Centre at Newcastle General Hospital. It was conducted by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care and it was found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery for Sciatica by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment.

We will set the table to the relaxing angle of 20 degrees, which gently relieves the pressure on your spine and leaves you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

After eight years in NZ there are now thousands of people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts that these really do work. If you suffer from Back or Neck Pain or simply just want to age healthily, bring this ad along for a free 10 minute treatment. “I promise that you will be pleasantly surprised!”

New hope for long-term back pain sufferers

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER INVERSION TABLE WORKS.

After over eight years in New Zealand, Inversion Therapy has now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain.

Discs: It uses Gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, rehydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, the rely on transfer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to dehydrate.

Dehydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the dehydration causes degeneration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. This brings back lost height (most people will regain around 2 CM of height), it separates the nerve roots a lot more effectively and returns quality of life.

Muscles: A lot of Pain is Muscular, when muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscle so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. A reverse stretch opens up the muscles and there is a treatment on the table, which is called Rhythmic traction, which is a gentle rocking motion. This stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

Posture: Poor posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; much in the same way as the misalignment of your wheels on your car, they eventually wear away the wheel bearings.

Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory as it constantly pulls the muscles to where they want to be. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and slowly come back into alignment, using the table daily, at least once a day, does not allow the memory to pull the muscles out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to slowly come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

This is not rocket science, it is just pure logic, if a machine is out of alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of the shows, you have nothing to lose and the chances are a lot to gain.

The Teeter Inversion Table works on three levels: Discs, Muscles and Posture.

After over eight years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now gained a reputation for success with long-term sufferers of back pain. Inversion New Zealand was started eight years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. "To me surgery was never an option" he said" as long as I still could walk, there was hope"

Dave had tried everything; every time he was overseas he would search for anything that could possibly help. While on one of these overseas trips eight years ago, Dave discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups. "The first time I tried it the pain disappeared and I was completely pain free for about 30 minutes, nothing had done that" he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, "as specialists had told me it was irreversible", "I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some serious relief".

To Dave's surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, "I couldn't believe it" he told me "I had spent large amounts of money on every form of treatment available and here was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time" It was then Dave decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand

and Inversion NZ was born.Over the years INZ have

helped thousands of people get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation, increased height, blood pressure and lots more. "We have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems and even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children" he told me, "the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent". What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the heath of the brain as we all get older.

Dave and his son Tyler will be attending the show; Tyler (17) had been around the shows since he was 8 and has seen for himself the amazing transformations the table has given people. " Tyler loves doing the shows and has picked up a great understanding of how the Teeter works, it's a pleasure working with him".

Dave told me that he realised that, had he not tried the Teeter for himself he would still be suffering, "I would still be a miserable grumpy bugger, living with pain" that is why we do the shows, people need to try it for themselves" he told me "most people actually get off with the pain either gone or considerably less" he said "we let the tables do the talking".

Frank Harwood (84) of Turangi using his Teeter,Frank has been inverting for seven years and

has found it keeps him young

Come along to one of our expo's or shows (Listed at the bottom of the page) for a treatment. If you have completely resigned yourself to having

back or neck pain for the rest of your life, then chances are you will be pleasantly surprised

DEAR DAVE AND NANCYIn 2008 I had been living with serious lower back pain for many years due to two discs with serious degeneration and was scheduled for a double spinal fusion at a cost of $48,000. The specialist had recommended many lifestyle changes including changing my profession, which was not practical as I own my own business. At the Waikato Home Show I experienced a demonstration on a Teeter Inversion Table by Dave and Nancy Hare. To me the effect was amazing, I actually experienced some serious relief which lasted for an hour or two; I was told that the relief would last longer with time as long as I used the table regularly, so with the surgery scheduled for 12 weeks time, having nothing to lose and a lot to gain I purchased a Teeter. Four years on I still use my table on a daily basis, my back is as strong as ever with very little or completely no pain, I am still at my same profession and working as hard as ever and most importantly I did not have the surgery. I consider the purchase of my Teeter has been one of my greatest investments, not only has it enabled me to avoid serious and costly surgery, it has kept me in my profession and it has brought my health back.Thank you very much for the opportunity.Very best regardsPaul GordonCambridge

Holiday GuideDiscover your back yard

Travel is the only thing you can buy that will make you richer however there is nothing worse than returning from your travels to find you have been burgled.

Here are some suggested tips about how to keep your farm, home and business secure whilst on holiday so you can relax properly and take the break you deserve.

Theft of quad bikes, two wheeled farm bikes along with tools, chainsaws and fuel are some of the most common kinds of crimes in rural areas.

Police recommend keeping valuable items such as these under lock and key overnight and when no one is on the property.

Bulk fuel should be secured by way of a good lock, making it as difficult as possible to remove.

Crime prevention is one of the main focusses for police, and people need to look out for their neighbours.

It is recommended that you call 111 if you see any suspicious activity or vehicles on your neighbouring property.

Good quality security cameras can also help identify offenders and the higher the resolution the better along with signage to act as deterrents. You can make your house a hard target to

thieves by installing automatic timers or sensor lighting around your property including at both the front and rear of your house and sheds.

Mount them high enough to prevent criminals from being able to remove the bulb or cover the sensor. Leave curtains partially open so your home looks occupied.

Leave a light on in the living room or a bedroom when going out at night

to give the impression that someone is home. Remove keys from vehicles and lock them away in garages if possible. Leave them empty of fuel for an added measure of security.

Never announce travel plans or indicate that you will be away in public, on social media or through answer machine messages, and let your neighbours know when you are going and when you will be back.

Touring fromNorth to South

The often talked about theory of don’t leave town until you have explored the country is said for good reason. New Zealand has many destinations with a vast array of coastal, vineyard, art, museums and outdoor activity experiences for young and old alike.

From Cape Reinga to the Bluff, by motorhome or car, with pre arranged or go as you please itineraries, exploring the different regions is an eye opener for many local travellers.

In Taranaki the Forgotten World Highway is a journey built on colonial bridle paths formed in the late 19th century. It is remote and mysterious. The settlement of Whangamomona is where the historic hotel is known for its own Whangamomona passport. See who the mayor is. Is it a man, is it a child, or maybe a goat?

Heading North the options of Taupo, Whangarei or Cape Reinga all have their own particular landscape and hidden gems to be discovered. There are retreats for couples and family friendly motels dotted around the country.

Cycle the Hawke’s Bay Trails with three or five-day self guided tours.

Visit Hamurana Springs and explore the Redwood Forest with crystal clear

streams with shades of blue, turquoise and emerald, and a variety of wildlife.

Venture deep into Pureora Forest Park on the timber trail featuring ancient forest, birdlife, graceful suspension bridges and historic timber industry relics.

Take the teenagers surfing at Raglan and spend time looking through the many seaside village shops.

Stop at the local Four Square supermarket wherever you may travel to pick up items for a picnic lunch.

Heading to the South Island visit the baby seal nursery at the Ohau Stream walkway and waterfall 27 kilometres North of Kaikoura. Explore the different Lord of the Rings film set locations. Stop off at the Moeraki Boulders and then carry on toward the Yellow Eyed penguin colony. Further toward Bluff, visit Gemstone Beach and look for jasper, garnets or sapphires amongst the pebbles on the shore.

New Zealand has many destinations to get away to that cater for both adults and children

Shelters help animalsShelter and protection from the extremes of weather including the wind, rain and the sun is a primary need for animals and plants and shelter helps them to survive and grow.

Dairy feed pads and shelters allow farmers to allocate feed more accurately to each cow resulting in faster growth of yearling animals in the winter. Often dairy production increases of 20 percent are a result of increased pasture growth and cow contentment and efficiency.

A large shed where stock can be housed and fed is an ideal building to protect them for the weather changes. In winter and spring these sheds or feed pads allow cows to be removed from pasture for part of each day if necessary. This helps reduce overgrazing and ‘pugging’ of the land which can interrupt grass growth. In summer these shelters help to reduce heat stress in animals. Animals find comfort when they are able to get into a shaded area to escape the heat.

There are many designs of practical and stylish farm sheds and shelters available. They can often be multi-purpose and can be used for hay, wool or equipment, and housing calves or stock.

A lean-to is also a convenient style shelter to provide shade for animals.

Sheep shearing sheds include an area to keep sheep dry overnight before shearing, an open area to sort the fleeces and a storage area for wool bales.

Cows were originally hand-milked in simple sheds and over time sheds have

changed to include running water and concrete floors.

Now we have the herringbone or rotary sheds available.

Farming practices have changed over the years and the farm building designs have altered to accommodate these changes.

Buildings are often available in colour steel or wood and can have additional features such as skylights, bird proofing or canopies, and they can come in kitset form or can be custom-made.

Buildings are a significant investment on any farm, regardless of whether it is a lifestyle block or a large livestock or horticultural venture.

The call ofthe open road

by Andy Bryenton

Winter would seem like the last time to consider gearing up to hit the road on two wheels. and more attractive.

But Yamaha know all too well that even now, at the cold and dark end of the year, summer is just around the corner. Their latest offerings in the learner-approved sport bike category may have arrived when there’s a chill in the air, but that just gives prospective riders a chance to appraise their options and make a tough choice between two very capable models which promise to make getting into motorcycling both easier

Not so long ago, the rules which governed learner bikes constrained novice riders to 250cc machines or smaller.

Initially this may have been intended to curb the amount of power available to those getting to grips with the intricacies and nuances of riding, but an ‘arms race’ at this low end of the displacement curve led to some seriously mad firepower hitting the streets, with high-revving four cylinder 250s like the Suzuki GSX-R and Yamaha’s own Zeal 250 offering a quick way to go from zero to several demerit points, all with the sound of a demonically possessed sewing machine.

To put no fine point on it, these bikes were also engineered with more

Brutal looks, refined manners — the new Yamaha MT-03 is learner approved and looks the part

and a thoroughly predictable centre of gravity in the bends.

This is a machine which will easily keep up with your non-learner mates, but which offers extreme safety measures such as ABS equipped twin-pot disc brakes alongside a thrilling riding experience and great fuel economy. The smaller, 351cc MT-03 sacrifices none of its big sibling’s aggressive looks, and is based on the precision-balanced YZF-R3 racer.

Both bikes are a perfect fit for those who have experience on off road bikes or quads, and want to take to the open road next season. Both come with diminutive price tags for the amount of fun and freedom they offer.

And best of all, both are proof positive that there’s no need to compromise when buying that first bike and taking

diminutive riders in mind, with that critical riding factor — a nice, low, manageable centre of gravity — neglected in service of the 250cc restriction.

Larger riders — read as ‘proper sized’ Kiwi blokes — may actually have been safer on more substantial machines.

A fairly recent change to the rules has seen the scope opened up to embrace bigger and more balanced rides — and while the 250cc bracket still encompasses some fine examples, the choices for a learner rider are now better than ever.

The new restriction is not so much on displacement as on raw power, which means that it’s possible to saddle up bikes which are both more adept at low-end torque delivery and sized for more than flat-out inner city sprints. A good example is the new double-whammy from Yamaha, the MT-07LA and its little cousin, the MT-03. With the aggressive, angular look of a semi-naked streetfighter bike, the MT-07LA is compact and easy to handle, but packs a class-leading 57.5 Newton-metres of torque from an inline twin 655cc mill, centrally mounted for structural rigidity

It’s at”The earth is flat. How do I know? Because everyone around here believes it.”

to seriously look at running my farm on biological principles. It doesn’t work, they told me. It’s airy-fairy, they laughed. That’s not how we do it, they said.

How do we do it? What are the widespread beliefs that farmers hold to so deeply it seems to them ludicrous to think otherwise?

Superphosphate and urea are the way to grow grass. Grass should be grazed at 2800kg/ha to maintain quality. At 2.5 leaf growth stage grass begins to die and should be grazed by then for best quality and production. Grass roots grow to 75mm, overseer measures leaching below the root zone, weeds are bad and should be sprayed, ryegrass is superior and is the feed of choice on a dairy farm, soil biology doesn’t affect grass growth, as well as nitrate leaching mainly comes from urine patches.

These things are true. How do I know? Because everyone around here believes

it. That includes the farm consultants who are are trained to believe in and preach these conventional concepts. I believed as well.

Until 2002, when I decided to put some other ideas to the test. I challenged the belief that good production was determined by a high usage of nitrogen.

I discovered that it’s not, and took the farm from growing 14 ton dm/ha/yr using 150 units of nitrogen/ha/yr to 19 ton dm/ha/yr by only using 30 units of nitrogen.

Here’s some other ‘round earth’ things I discovered: Farming practices that work with the soil’s biology grows significantly longer root systems. The roots on my farm measured 800mm. That in itself mitigated leaching and grew better grass.

Biologically correct soil nutrition grows nutrient-dense feed that has far more palatability. This type of grass can be allowed to grow longer and can be grazed clean by cows at 3300kg/ha. With a longer grazing period more grass is grown, meaning less dependance on bought-in feed. When all 16 soil nutrients are in their right percentages, the

Three hundred years ago, a statement like that wouldn’t have raised a single eyebrow. Back then, belief in a flat earth was so entrenched, it was preposterous to think otherwise, and if you did, you were labelled a mad man.

That’s how widely held convictions work. The sheer number of ’believers’ creates a pressure that makes it easy to conform and very difficult to entertain another idea.

Back in 2002, some farmers regarded me as a ‘round earther’ because I began

biological activity in the soil increases significantly. This increase in good organisms produces more enzymes which digest the feed in the cow’s gut. This results in better conversion of feed to milk. You do not see weeping walls or effluent management machinery on biologically efficient farms. That’s because the better digestion rates significantly reduce the solid matter in the effluent.

Also, the transfer of good biological activity from the soil-grass-gut-effluent means that the pond contains a higher ratio of fibre-eating bacteria. These microbes liquefy the pond.

The higher ratio of good soil organisms suppresses the activity of soil pathogens. This causes a drop in animal sickness — mastitis, facial eczema, foot rot, and the need for remedial measures. Higher biological activity creates better soil physiology.

This increases drainage which reduces pugging. It also raises the soil temperature which shrinks your winter season length and reduces dry periods because of the extended root systems. That’s what I discovered from 10 years of biological farming.

Do other farmers have to go through all that in order to believe in a better science? No. All they need is to see a comparative trial — properly done — where the procedures are transparent, and politics are left out.

More on that next time.

Cash for best bull calvesDairy farmers in the thick of calving are being offered thousands of dollars for their best bull calves by CRV Ambreed.

The company is offering farmers who breed the best bull calves $4,000 if they are selected for the CRV Progeny Test Program. That $4,000 could turn into $11,000 from graduation payments or more if royalty options are taken.

CRV Breeding Program manager Aaron Parker said with calving now underway, a lucrative source of extra income could be dropping in farm paddocks across the country right now.

“As well as being welcome income for dairy farmers, delivering their best bulls to CRV Ambreed will contribute to genetic diversity, and thus advancement across the national herd. Farmers know best when it comes to their herds.”

Elite bull calves are usually sourced through contract mating, stud breeders and CRV Ambreed’s embryo transfer programme, but it is through farmers nominating their bull calves on the open market where more unique bulls are discovered.

“We’re really looking for bulls whose daughters will be efficient and easy to manage for our farmers,” said Mr Parker.

CRV Ambreed is building its genetic portfolio to suit the broad range of environments, conditions and farming systems in operation now and in the future. Okura Stud farmers, Luke and

Lyna Beehre, offered CRV Ambreed a breeding superstar through the open market in 2005. Okura Lika Murmur S3J, who recently retired, came from their Northland stud and contributed to the national dairy herd with almost 500,000 semen doses. He sired 22,464 herd testing daughters in New Zealand and many legendary sons. His genetics were also popular in South Africa, North America and Australia.

“He’s bred outstanding sons and daughters with super production, udder and capacity traits,” he said.

“Hundreds of his cows have been contract mated in New Zealand and as a sire of sons he has produced some of the country’s best jersey bulls.”

The more bulls like Mumur in CRV Ambreed’s breeding programme, the greater genetic diversity feeds through to New Zealand’s national herd and the higher the genetic gain. Bull calves from any sires will be considered by CRV Ambreed.

“Farmers we haven’t worked with before could potentially have the genetic diversity that we are looking

Aaron Parker CRV Breeding Program manager

for and could hold the industry’s next superstar. We are really keen to talk to these farmers right across the country.”

The king is back in the buildingby Andy Bryenton

Racing legend Ken Block loves his Fords — but he has a strange way of showing it. Some collectors pamper their prized possessions, keeping them in glazed-in polished isolation. Not so the twisted genius from Hoonigan Racing, who lets his stable of blue oval racers loose on some of the wildest courses ever imagined, howling around them sideways in a thunderstorm of tyre smoke.

Now the man who has created souped-up-beyond-sanity versions of both the Mk 2 Escort, the Fiesta ST and the 1965 Mustang has been asked to

Blue streak — with input from Ken Blockand Cosworth, the new Focus RS was never going to be slow

weigh in on creating a brand new Ford for all of us. Oh — and they’ve invited the lads at Cosworth to contribute their two cents worth as well. The result could only be planet-smashingly fast, as blindingly blue. Welcome to the 2016 Ford Focus RS.

While fans of extreme motorsport will definitely know about Ken Block, younger readers might have missed the days when the word Cosworth was breathed in the same sentence as the true name of God — and quite often featured on speeding tickets. The Sierra Cosworth and the subsequent Escort Cosworth were Ford’s foray into the frayed zone at the edge of automotive sanity, and they quickly became legends with both petrol heads — and the local constabulary. Racing wins piled up, as did the ink on a screed of rave reviews. The new RS embodies that same spirit of precisely engineered lunacy — even while standing still. Input from Cosworth and Mr Block has given the Focus — which, one must remind oneself, was aggressively polymorphed

from a sensible family hatch — no less than 345 horsepower and a snarling 324 foot-pounds of torque, all from a turbocharged four cylinder engine. The party piece of this machine is the way it delivers that power to the ground, through a clever four wheel drive system. Subaru and Mitsubishi may have eclipsed the Cosworth Fords of old with their rally-bred all wheel grip, but this modern Focus RS aims to beat them at their own game, shifting power to the back wheels and judiciously vectoring it forward in greater amounts when necessary.

The result is a sense of real speed and accuracy, without the threat of imminent loss of traction. The old Escort

Cosworth of yesteryear was locked into a 34/66 per cent front to rear split in terms of all wheel traction, but the new layout pays dividends in the corners, allowing drivers to unleash not just all the blue bullet’s power, but also its satisfying exhaust note. Getting the tail right out requires a turn of the dial on the central console, selecting the frankly mental ‘drift’ mode. All in all, this has been a vintage year for Ford.

GT victory at Le Mans, Mustangs selling faster than they take off from the line — and now this. A special kind of madness, tempered with world-class Ford engineering, and garnished with the kind of hot sauce only Ken Block and Cosworth could concoct.

Taranaki Rural Marketplace

Re ned ute gains six appealThe Volkswagen Amarok has been a worthy contender in the cut-throat world of Kiwi ute sales — a market with more turns of fortune than medieval television epic Game of Thrones.

Seen as the more refined and Euro-inspired alternative to rugged favourites such as Ford’s Ranger and Toyota’s Hilux, the Amarok never suffered from a lack of power.

But that hasn’t stopped the lads at the VW design facility in Germany from dialling in a more muscular power plant to complement the ute’s mid-life facelift. And they haven’t gone in by half measures, either.

While new versions of existing vehicles often feature a small tweak and fettle under the hood to deliver a touch more torque or a bit more oomph off the line, the Teutonic engineers — who we must admit share a stable with the octane-drinking masterminds of Audi and Lamborghini — have slotted in a full litre of extra displacement, creating a 3 litre diesel V6 monster.

The original was no slouch, delivering over 420 Newton metres of torque from a two litre mill. This new incarnation throws the rulebook in a wood chipper, delivering a stump-pulling 550 Nm, and over 220 horsepower.

Taming all this might is left to a beefed-up braking system, sophisticated computer control, and, of course, a far more comfortable driver thanks to improvements in the cabin appointments as well.

Six packed — the new Amarok upgrades adds a powerful new engine choice

R U R A L W H E E L S

A special edition — dubbed the Aventura — will come stacked with more automotive bling, including 20 inch mag wheels, bi-xenon headlights and special custom detailing. But it’s the extra hardware under the hood which will really step the Amarok’s game up into the territory where it is a serious contender against the likes of the top-of-the-line Ranger Wildtrak — a prestige ute for the gentleman who likes performance and power tempered with visual head-turning appeal. John Frear, head of Commercial Vehicles for Volkswagen New Zealand had this to say about the brand’s new flagship ute. “We are hugely excited by the addition of the V6 engine to the already powerful Amarok range.

“This will sit nicely alongside the existing 2.0L 420Nm powertrain which will remain a core part of the Amarok line-up.

“Now we’ve seen the early images of the facelift Amarok, including significant interior layout updates, I really believe this takes NZ’s most aspirational ute to the next level. We’re sure this offers something new for loyal Volkswagen customers as well as plenty to attract those new to the brand when the first vehicles hit showroom floors at the end of this year.”

See the Stripper that gets it off, everytime!

By Dave Hare, Coopers was started by Simon Cooper in the early 80’s.At that time, Simon was a cabinet maker with a boutique shop in Wellington making and restoring fine furniture.Disillusioned with the standard of current paint strippers and with a flair for chemistry, Simon set about making a stripper that was easy to use and actually worked.I asked him what on earth possessed him to try and change the norm.“I was sick of how difficult it was to use the

current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says.“Why sand when the person who made the item, sanded it in the first place? I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.”Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are.At high school he developed a passion for working with wood and his love of fine furniture began.Once Simon developed his own stripper, the

word got out and today, over 30 years later,

Simon’s products and methods are now known as Cooper’s Strip Club; a complete DIY restoration system, family owned and operated, available throughout New Zealand and Australia.Simon says Cooper’s is different to conventional strippers in so many ways. The main ones being that it will strip any finish from any surface, without the need for sanding, whether the finish is on the inside or outside of your home.“I am very proud of it and the results it has achieved,” he says. With Cooper’s having been used on well over

70,000 homes, Simon says anyone can easily strip anything covered in paint or varnish such as furniture, doors and mouldings, or even weatherboards and windows baked by the sun for over 100 years.I also asked Simon about the current problems related to safe lead removal. Simon says.

I asked Simon what the Stripping Expo is all about and he said, “The Stripping Expo is a DIY paint and varnish stripping exhibition travelling regionally throughout New Zealand.” “The purpose of the Stripping Expo is to show Cooper’s stripping any paint or varnish from any surface.” Simon says this months Stripping Expos are in Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Hawera and Wanganui. “We have on exhibition some impressive before and after displays, as well as practical one on one demonstrations.” Come and meet the family, chat to us about your project, bring along some photos of what you want to strip and we’ll select a similar old piece of paint or varnish to strip with you.” But what Simon really wants you to do is actually bring along your project, no matter how big or small. Bring a chair, a drawer, unscrew a window sash, a door, a piece of Archtrave or skirting board, even bring your project car or boat and the Cooper’s will really show you what Cooper’s is capable of doing.

”There’s ample parking outside, so impress us with what you bring along”.

“Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern”

We’ll Show you howat the Stripping Expo

By Simon CooperSo you’ve inherited some furniture, a chair perhaps and you’ve decided to give it a new lease on life, but how do you do it? Most people have tried sanding, a

time consuming, dusty,

painful experience you probably never want to repeat. Maybe you’re thinking of sending it off to the dipper, thinking it will come back ready for a new finish, unfortunately boiling your furniture in a vat of caustic is rarely a good idea. Joint damage and furry grain that needs a lot of sanding is more often the norm than the exception and I know what I’m talking about, I ran a dip stripping bath… not a good experience. By this point we might just think it would be easier to send that chair to a ‘Professional’, well the good news is, that isn’t needed, stripping is easy and you can do it yourself.

Why sand when the person who made ‘it’, sanded it for you? Simply dissolve the old finish with my Stripper then rinse it clean with my Flusher, it really is that easy. This month my family and I will be in the Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki regions stripping up a storm, so put that chair (or anything

else for that matter) in the car and let us show you how! We will be in each area for a few days following the expo, so if your project is too large to fit in the car e.g. House lot of Windows, Doors, Weatherbords etc, we are happy to visit your home for free and show you how to strip the easy way. If this sounds like you, come in to discuss your project and arrange a time”.

By Darryl ClarkeWhen it comes to stripping your windows, it’s normal to be confronted by the scope of the project, and the windows that won’t open or close properly because of the many coats of paint that have glued them shut. The tricky corners with all that built-up paint that seems impossible to strip and of course the lead paint that we grind into dust with sandpaper to spread around for everyone to breathe; it’s all very daunting. Well not anymore, Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s Strip Club, says.Simon says their stripping system makes stripping your windows the perfect DIY project. Simon confidently claims their easy-to-use products and methods will remove any paint or varnish from the inside or outside of your windows without the need to use sandpaper.Simon says their stripper will dissolve any finish and their flusher will rinse the surface clean and because the process is wet, there is no harmful lead dust to worry about. During July and August the Cooper’s Strip Club will be demonstrating at the Palmerston North, New Plymouth, Hawera and Wanganui Stripping Expos. Simon says “If

you are interested in seeing how to get those windows dealt

to once and for all, pop on down and see the perfect way to strip your windows. Even better, unscrew a

window sash and bring it with you to see what Cooper’s can

really do!”.
