Paddock to plate course offers insight of agricultural-related businesses

Photo: DENISE GUNN

Selected young New Zealanders will have the opportunity to gain insights into the full supply chain from paddock to plate during a

scholarship programme offered by Countdown, through parent company Woolworths in Australia

A scholarship programme offered by Countdown, through parent company Woolworths in Australia, will give selected young New Zealanders currently working or studying in the agricultural or horticultural sectors, a chance to gain a broader outlook into agricultural-related businesses.

The Woolworths Agricultural Business Scholarship Programme developed by Woolworths, the Royal Agricultural Society of New South Wales (RAS) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS), offers a holistic look into the agricultural industry and an insight into Australia’s largest supermarket operator. In a press release from Countdown, divisional manager (fresh produce) Ian Pavey, said the programme aimed to stem the draft of talented people out of agriculture while building new blood within the industry.

“Numbers of young people in the agricultural sector are dwindling.

“New Zealand prides itself on its fresh produce supply but if we are going to meet the future needs of this country we need to ensure we attract and retain our young talent and grow them into agricultural leaders.”

The course, which runs from late August for two weeks in Sydney, will have representatives from both sides of the Tasman. Participants will tour stores, food markets and distribution centres. Key people within the industry will give presentations to the group. The programme will also provide opportunities for participants to network with people involved in the agricultural sector.

by Denise Gunn

Mr Pavey said the site visits provide valuable insight into the full supply chain from paddock to plate.

“Participants will be able to see exactly how our supermarkets operate together with fresh food suppliers.”

Countdown will cover all course fees, accommodation and travel for the successful applicants and on their return will also extend an invitation to learn more about the business in New Zealand.

Over 150 people have taken part in the programme over the past six years.

BACK or NECK PAIN?If you suffer from back or neck pain, then come along to the Manawatu Ideal Home Show, July 20th to 22nd at the Manawatu Arena, Palmerston North and try the Teeter Hang-Ups Inversion Table.

Inversion NZ Ltd0800 62 62 83 | www.inversionnz.co.nz

A three and a half year medical study recently completed at the Regional Neuroscience Centre in Newcastle by one of the UK’s leading Neurosurgeons and authorities on back care, found that Inversion Therapy reduced the need for spinal surgery by 77% compared to 22% with traditional methods of treatment.

We will set the table at a slight angle of 20 degrees, which will gently take the pressure off your spine and relax you in a way you have never felt before.

After four years in NZ there are now enough people using the Teeter Hang-Ups to dispel the last of any doubts, these really do work. We have helped thousands of people get ongoing relief from their back pain, do yourself a favour, come along and try for yourself.

Inversion therapy may help you with:• Reduce Back Pain• Relieve Stress• Stimulate circulation & Lymph Flow• Improve posture• Reduce Muscle Tension• Strengthen Ligaments• Increase Blood to the Brain• Reduce the effects of aging• Increase flexibility

Inversion New Zealand was started nearly five years ago by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from Degenerated Discs and after spending a considerable amount of time and money trying every form of help available, had basically given up and decided to just live with it. “To me surgery was never an option” he said “as long as I could still walk, there was always hope”, Dave tried every form of treatment and gimmick out there and on one of his overseas trips he discovered the Teeter Hang Ups. “The first time I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and was gone for 30 minutes, nothing had done that” he told me. Dave never believed it would fix him, he just knew now he had a place to go every time he got sick of the pain, “it was my happy place” he told me.

To Dave’s surprise the more he used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months he was completely pain free, it was then he decided to introduce Teeter to New Zealand and Inversion New Zealand was born.

Over the years Inversion New Zealand have helped thousands of people get ongoing relief from their pain and have seen amazing results in not only backs, but hips and knees, necks, posture, circulation, increased height, we have testimonials from people with over fifty years of back problems. They even have them in a number of schools in New Zealand for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results have been encouraging. Inversion New Zealand now has a division putting the Teeters into Industry, as Back Pain is one of the major causes of lost production.

Both Dave and Nancy will be attending the Show, Dave realised that had he not tried the Teeter Inversion Table for himself he would have never bought one, “and look what I would have missed out on” he told me, that is why Inversion New Zealand do the shows, their aim is to get people themselves to experience the Teeter Hang-Ups, “we let the tables do the talking” he told me.

Septic Tank OwnersHow you can save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthySeptic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them.Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective.By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top effi ciency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation fi eld and leach lines will become clear of slimes and

blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring micro-organisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste

material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum effi ciency. As they progress through to your irrigation fi eld they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum effi ciency.

A satised customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Community Fruit Harvesting was founded last year by Auckland woman Di Celliers after she initially started a community garden at her church. The garden included 12 fruit trees.

“A year later the trees were not very big and also not much fruit,” said Mrs Celliers.

“As I drove around the neighbourhood, I started noticing all the big, heavily laden trees and lots of fruit dropping to the ground.”

Mrs Celliers wondered if people who

did not want their fruit or were unable to pick their own would consider allowing volunteers to pick.

Some of the fruit would be given to the owner, the volunteers could keep some and the rest could go to food banks, charities, schools and others in need.

She ran the concept past a few people she knew, received a positive response then followed this up with publicity.

“This started generating an amazing response from people in the community,” she said.

Volunteers during a Community Fruit Harvesting outing to pick fruit

Volunteers needed for Community Fruit Harvestingby Denise Gunn

A new branch of the Community Fruit Harvesting group has recently been established in the Manawatu and needs volunteer fruit pickers to get up and running

After picking the fruit, volunteers then make deliveries to food banks, schools, charities and others in need

“It has spread rapidly since then.”

Mrs Celliers said people contact the group if they would like to donate some or all of the fruit from their trees.

The co-ordinator then arranges a date and time with the tree owner to do the picking and ensures that all the owner’s rules are noted. After the co-ordinator emails fruit pickers in the area, the volunteers respond about their availability on the set date and further arrangements are made. After picking the fruit, volunteers then make deliveries to food banks, schools, charities and others in need.

“Our purpose is to facilitate the sharing of excess fruit to those in need,” said Mrs Celliers.

“We do this by providing easy opportunities for people to get involved — picking, donating their trees, donating glass jars or sugar, making preserves, distributing flyers, advertising for us in any possible way.

“We believe in encouraging people to help themselves and their communities by getting involved.”

More regional co-ordinators, volunteer pickers and the offer of unwanted fruit are required throughout New Zealand.

Those interested in helping Community Fruit Harvesting can email Di Celliers on [email protected]

New Zealand Friesian heifers were exported to Vietnam. Imported heifers undergo a 45-day quarantine period and are vaccinated for a range of diseases and illnesses. External parasite treatments are also administered.

A pre-shipping conditioning phase prior to leaving New Zealand assists the heifers to adapt to a diet of concentrates and hay during the voyage.

After arriving in Vietnam, heifers adjust to their new surroundings within a few days and have coped well with the change from a New Zealand grass-based system to one of being housed and fed mixed rations in Vietnam.

Forage feeds such as lucerne and fescue hay are imported while base ingredients are grown and sourced in Vietnam.

New Zealand Friesian heifers, sourced by PGG Wrightson, continue to be exported to Vietnam on a regular basis.

“As the facilities become available, they are filled,” said Mr Coddington.

The site of the original Vietnam project covers 80ha with a large number of buildings. Animals are housed year-round with a total mixed-feed ration fed down a central alleyway.

Concentrate adjustments are allocated electronically in the milking parlour in response to lactation needs.

The joint-venture dairy project continues to expand with further farm units added to the original farm.

“Further farm units are being added all the time along with their infrastructure,” said Mr Coddington.

The master plan includes four clusters making up 12 farms with each milking around 2400 cows by the end of this year.

The company’s long-term target is to meet up to 50 percent of the country’s dairy product requirements.

When the couple bought their 10-acre lifestyle block in 1993 they were living in Thailand

where Arthur was based as a commercial airline pilot.

Arthur considered truffle growing as a means to produce a financial return on the block.

“With a lifestyle block, we needed some sort of business,” he said.

Truffles are a member of the fungi family that grows underground, attaching itself on and around the roots of certain types of trees. The fungus, which can only grow in suitable soil conditions, also requires warm summer temperatures and soil moisture. It is highly sought after in Italian and French cuisine. The main type of truffle grown in New Zealand is the Perigord black truffle which can weigh up to one kilo. They are typically roundish in appearance,

growing anywhere between one to 15 centimetres across.

On the couple’s return to New Zealand in 1995, Arthur and his nephew built the house and Linda established a garden. Their thoughts then turned to planting trees to encourage truffles to grow.

In spring 1997, the couple planted225 infected trees in a 0.5ha block. The trees were a mixture of hazels and English oaks, sourced from Crop & Food.

A hot wire around the perimeter of the grove keeps rabbits out and traps have been set up for rats, stoats and ferrets.

After following a theory that to grow truffles in New Zealand a very high pH level was required in the soil, Arthur and Linda initially applied 40 tonne of lime. This lifted the soil ph level from 5.5 to 7.8.

With the current return fetching anywhere up to $4,000 per kilo depending on quality, truffles are seen as a viable option for

producing an income from lifestyle blocks.

Trees can begin growing truffles within five years if the soil is suitable and a mature tree is capable of producing more than one kilo a year, depending on the season.

The truffle season in New Zealand usually runs between June to July but this can vary.

In Europe, dogs and pigs are specially trained to locate truffles due to their keen sense of smell.

Arthur and Linda have trained their two dogs, Geordie (a Border Terrier) and Polly (a Fox Terrier cross) to find the rare

fungi using the scent of truffle salt. Arthur and Linda take the dogs into the grove and walk between the trees a couple of times each week, allowing the dogs time to sniff and search for truffles.

“We taught the dogs at an early age,” said Arthur.

“Dogs that like to retrieve seem to work the best.”

When the dogs catch the scent of potential truffles, they begin to dig. The dog is then rewarded with praise and an edible treat before walking onto the next trees.

Dr Malajczuk is confident that Arthur and Linda’s grove of trees will produce truffles this year.

“The potential is mind boggling,” said Arthur.

Arthur and Linda’s hazelnut and English oak trees encourage the growth of truffles

“With the current return fetching anywhere up to $4,000 per kilo depending on quality, truffles are seen as a viable option

for producing an income from lifestyle blocks”

But after years with no truffles appearing, the couple engaged the advice of Australian truffle grower and former Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) scientist consultant Nick Malajczuk.

Dr Malajczuk visits New Zealand several times each year as a consultant to truffle growers.

Muscles need CoEnzyme Q10In the May edition we looked at the common muscle

diseases Polymyalgia Rheumatica and Fibromyalgia. I received many calls from readers for more information especially from those with Polymyalgia. If you missed the column call me and I can email a copy. Today we look at the role of Co Enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) with muscle function.

One of the most common forms of muscle pain is statin myopathy. This is a collection of muscular symptoms caused by side effects of commonly prescribed cholesterol lowering statin medication. While statins are very effective at lowering cholesterol they can cause muscle problems. Statins work by inhibiting an enzyme (HMG-CoA reductase) and subsequently reducing mevalonate needed to make cholesterol. Unfortunately mevalonate is also needed for the production of CoQ10.

The main function of CoQ10 is to produce the energy needed for our body demands especially in muscle cells. Think of CoQ10 like the spark plugs and exhaust system in your car engine. Without a good spark a petrol engine will not run properly. Without a good exhaust system engine exhausts will choke the engine and pollute the air. With insuf cient CoQ10 the trillions of little engines (mitochondria) in your cells will not produce enough energy and you feel that as weakness, stiffness and pain in your muscles. Additionally CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant to clean up the barrage of toxic free radicals as by products of energy production.

I recommend everyone on statins take 100mg of high grade CoQ10 to compensate. Interestingly I note an increasing number of doctors including cardiologists who suggest CoQ10 supplementation to counter statin myopathy. I also recommend CoQ10 for people with low energy and especially with any autoimmune or neurodegenerative problems. The one I prefer is a trademarked product that is proven to increase cell CoQ10 levels and includes compounds called tocopherols and carotenoids known to help cholesterol balance. In most cases this can help muscle function by restoring lost CoQ10.

For those on statins my rst goal is to prevent or reduce any statin myopathy but just as importantly to create a full cardiovascular nutrition programme. I always add a range of nutrients to help with circulation and to protect blood vessels especially coronary arteries from the free radical damage and in ammation central to the formation of artery-blocking plaques. Give me a call if you need help.

Motorbike hobby leads to adventure ride businessWhat began as a hobby for motorbike

enthusiasts Mike Britton and Angela Bruce has led to the couple building an adventure ride business.

Mike grew up in Auckland and bought his first bike, a Yamaha YZ125E, when he was about 17 and started riding, mainly off-road.

For Angela, motorbike riding was a natural progression when her father was one of the earlier farmers to get a farm bike, followed later by her younger brother buying a bike with his first pay cheque.

When the couple moved to the far north in the late 1990s Mike bought a Yamaha TT600 and went to an adventure ride in 1991. The event was so enjoyable he decided to run a similar type of ride in the far north.

After their inaugural Far North Adventure Ride in 1992, the couple held the ride annually and began to add further rides in different regions of New Zealand.

They decided to go a step following a trip with friends to Bali in 1998.

“At our suggestion we toured the island by bike and had a ball,” said Angela.

“They suggested we start doing commercial motorbike tours to Bali because they had such a fantastically different holiday.”

In 1999 Mike and Angela ran their first ‘Bali by the Backroads Tour’ with 14 clients.

This proved so popular that clients were asking for more so the couple organised similar trips to Vietnam, Outer Mongolia, Laos, Angkor Wat, and High Andes Bolivia.

The couple have established good connections in all the other countries they take tours to and still use their original contacts and crew in all their overseas destinations.

Angela said finding the right people to work with and having some other inside connections make a huge difference to organising adventure rides overseas.

A flexible roll-bar mounted behind the bike seat can support tonnes of weight and is seen as a lifesaver in a country where quad-bike accidents, both on the farm and in recreation use, are responsible for a huge toll in injuries and fatalities.

A breakthrough for quad safetyBy Paul Campbell Mr Vernon Suckling, from Ag Tech

Industries Ltd in Dargaville, Northland, has won the Golden Standard Award for Innovation at the Mystery Creek Fieldays for his invention.

The device attracted the attention of Prime Minister John Key at Mystery Creek, as well as from innovation scouts from around the world. It is protected by patents.

“I took the ATV Lifeguard as we have called it to Mystery Creek because a lot of people go there to look for new ideas,” said Mr Suckling.

“I did not think of an award or anything. I was just looking to see it give others a chance in an accident.”

He was inspired to create ATV Lifeguard because crushing is the most common cause of injury and death in quad bike accidents.

“The segmented construction is a new innovation and has the ability to deflect around an object or person’s body, limbs or head on impact. It is protected with patent rights and is a world first. It is soft at the point of contact when deflected but increases in vertical strength. It cannot collapse and its strength is obtained by two fibre cables inside the nylon segments.

“It will hold an upturned quad off the ground providing space underneath to help prevent the rider from being crushed. The flat and padded surface also spreads the weight of impact. It is quite possible to

The quad will also stop rolling a lot quicker with the device acting as a shock absorber, reducing bounce and movement — in short preventing more rolls of an upturned quad.

Production of the device is expected to get underway before the end of the year and it has already won approval from New Zealand’s Industrial Research Ltd., the Department of Labour, Australian Health and Safety, Land Corp NZ and the ACC.

Holding an upturned quad off the ground providing space underneath

Farmers of New Zealand operations director, Bill Guest, says the ATV Lifeguard will be “invaluable for farm and recreational safety.” He said that sheer numbers of quads around the world will ensure a market. “There are 60 million quad bikes across the United States alone.”

Statistics on quad bike accidents tell their own story. In 2011, 41 kiwi workers died and, of the deaths last year, 15 were in the agriculture industry — more than a third of all deaths. The majority of these deaths involved vehicles or machinery — four were quad bike accidents.

The statistics reinforce the need for quad bike safety and the work being done to improve this.

At the beginning of this year there was a flurry of media reports about quad bike accidents across the country — in that time there were at least 11 separate incidents involving 13 people — with an even split between those that were work-related on the farm and recreational accidents. The high number of people being injured on quad

bikes prompted the Department and ACC to release a statement in January reminding riders of the dangers of not adhering to safety rules. Quad bike-related claims cost ACC approximately $8.6 million last year — with the emotional costs even higher.

But after viewing Murray Grey cattle during a visit to the National Field Days, thoughts turned to using the breed’s semen over their

late calving cows.

When Wayne and Jean eventually sold their Jersey herd, they decided to extend their Murray Grey cattle numbers, registering their Kotare Murray Grey Stud in 1988.

“We chose them for their easy calving trait and their reputation for good temperament,” said Wayne.

The couple built up their herd’s female numbers by purchasing in-calf cows or heifers from the

Waikato Club sales which were operating atthat time.

“A few others were obtained from local breeders,” said Wayne.

“Most of those foundation cows have established families still in the herd.

“Sires have been purchased from a number of studs as far south as Winton and as far north as Wellsford.”

Although A.I. has not been used on the Allerby’s Kotare Stud, the couple have selected some of their bulls from sires imported from Australia by other breeders.

The herd now includes around 60 breeding cows with heifers calving at two years of age. All calves remain on their mothers until late March.

Wayne said surplus heifers that are suitable for sale are sold in-calf to other breeders.

“Others are sold to local trade along with approximately 35 other trading stock that are purchased as weaners.”

The majority of the herd’s bull calves are sold as yearlings to dairy famers’ for use over heifers.

Stud bulls have also been sold to several established and newer Murray Grey breeders.

“We have a regular client base with some buying regularly for more than 12 years.”

The Allerby’s 76-hectare farm has free draining volcanic soil with 60 percent of the property flat to easy rolling country.

keep their cows behind electric fences over winter and early spring, adding silage and/or hay to the grass ration.

“We usually make about 30 bales of wrapped silage and approximately 2500 small bale equivalents on farm.”

Wayne said all stock winter on the farm and the breed cope well with the local conditions.

Although grass growth is slow from mid-May until October, there is often of rush of spring grass on

the property.

The Allerby’s regularly weigh their stock and use Breedplan, a modern genetic evaluation programme for cattle breeders run by the University of New England’s Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) in Australia, to produce Estimated Breeding Value (EBV’s) for each animal.

Wayne said these figures are used as a tool to select breeding replacements.

“Low birthweight is important because we are supplying the dairy

market but we aim for reasonable growth rate also.”

The couple are involved with the Southern North Island Murray Grey Club where Wayne is currently president. Wayne has also been on the Murray Grey National Council for nine years as treasurer.

“We have made some great friends as a result of our involvement with Murray Greys, both in New Zealand and Australia, and have enjoyed travelling with them and visiting other Murray Grey studs,” said Wayne.

“We aim to continue breeding easy calving animals for the dairy market but would like to improve our growth rate as well.”

The balance of the land is rolling with a few steeper faces. Two hectares is in native bush.

Wayne said rainfall in Inglewood averages about 90 inches per year which can cause pugging problems during the wet winter periods.

To alleviate this problem, the Allerby’s

The Rotagen Combo range remains unique as non-toxic, non-withhold vet only antibody treatment for calves affected by common pathogens like Rotavirus 6 and 10, Coronavirus, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and or E.coli (K99).

New Zealand is the only country in the world where speci c antibodies against speci c pathogens — (Rotagen Combo) — is a registered animal remedy.

The Rotagen Combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s speci c to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10, coronavirus, salmonella, cryptosporidium, and E.coli (K99).

Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status ocks against a speci c pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heat-treated and standardized to a determined IgY titre.

Calf scours! Remember Rotagen this spring!

This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to meet a speci c challenge.

IgY antibodies provide a passive immunity effect in the gut in the same way bovine colostrum would. Studies show that IgY’s successfully pass through the gastro -intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut.

As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period.

The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. It can be sed to both prevent and treat speci c calf scours.

A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium speci c treatment for calves.

Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This

“ As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period”

Calf scours may be all bad, but there’s a good option at hand for clients who end up battling with sick animals this spring

is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves.

Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for ve days. For treatment, dose calves with 10g twice daily for the rst day, then 5g twice daily for three to seven days.

Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

New Zealand used to be famously connected with sheep in the eyes of the wider world, but today it’s the dairy and cattle industries which provide over a quarter of our export earnings — that’s more than ten billion dollars every year!

With over 4.5 million cows in milk during any given season, that’s one for each New Zealander, and our agricultural industry is seen as leading the world not just in production and innovation, but also in caring for our livestock. After all, every cow is a valuable investment.

When it comes to cattle health, science plays a key role. And one of the companies at the forefront of development when it comes to vital minerals and supplements for New Zealand cattle is Seales Winslow, who use scientific know-how to augment the diet of cattle year round.

Different conditions and different times of the year call for different minerals and nutrients — not all of which are readily available from pasture

Love your chooks?

With the hard times that are upon us at present we have been amazed at our increase in sales every year. It goes to show how popular it is to keep some chooks in the back yard these days. We heard recently that keeping chooks is the number one fastest growing hobby in the UK. Well we believe NZ is right up there as well. Doing the shows gives you an opportunity to talk to the many and varied chook owners out there. We had four chooks at the show to demonstrate our feeders and I think we could have sold them hundreds of times over.

Despite the fact that there are other automatic chook feeders on the market now, Grandpa’s believe that their feeder is still the best. It costs a little more, but it is of excellent quality and we provide a full back up service and a money back guarantee.

We had one fellow visit us at

Grandpa’s feeders has just completed it’s 14th consecutive eldays at Mystery Creek

the show who purchased one of our feeders two years ago, and couldn’t wait to tell us that his feeder paid for itself within six months on the food he saved by not feeding sparrows.

Different conditions and different times of the year call for different minerals and nutrients — not all of which are readily available from pasture

or from silage and hay. A convenient way to deliver all the ‘good stuff’

your herd needs is via a Seales Winslow cattle block — a tasty and scientifically formulated ‘lick’ similar to traditional salt licks in size and weight, but infused with molasses and minerals.

Whenever there’s a gap between the needs of the herd and what pasture and forage can supply, a Seales Winslow cattle block from their targeted range may provide the perfect answer. Cattle provided with peak nutrition are more productive, healthier, and more resistant to disease and the elements.

Woolover Calf Covers are a natural thermal protector

Whether it is a dairy farmer’s replacement stock or calf-rearing on a sheep farm to supplement income, the objective in both cases is to grow out and maximize the true potential of these young stock

The basic requirements of a newborn calf are a dry, warm and draught-free environment. Woolover calf covers offer farmers the exibility to provide these conditions at a low cost. The basic requirement is WARMTH. Woolover calf covers are constructed using a high percentage of WOOL, which has the ability to absorb up to 30% moisture and still feel dry thus retaining the calves natural body heat and most importantly BREATHE.

TRIAL DATA

During the northern winter 97/98 Woolover Limited commissioned the North Dakota State University in Fargo (USA) to trial covers on both dairy and beef calves. On average dairy calves that were covered gained 14 lb more than uncovered calves over the 65 day trial period. This was in spite of the average low temperature being 5°C higher than normal during the trial. These calves were in dome hutches. The temperature ranged from (plus) 15°C to a low of minus 11°C.

Differences in Average Daily Weight

Gain (ADG) were most pronounced during the rst three weeks of a calf’s life, with an ADG for blanketed calves of 1.15 lb versus 0.82 lb (unblanketed). Dr J W Schroeder (the NSDU extension dairy specialist) believes that the blanketed calves bene ted from a jumpstart in weight gain that they maintained throughout the course of the trial. At six months of age blanketed calves that exhibited greater early postpartum ADG also maintained a numerical performance advantage in rate of growth at later stages of calf development than unblanketed calves.

Beef calves running with their mothers had an average weight gain of 38lb more than the unblanketed control group at 118 days of age.

The right of centre politics believing larger provides greater efficiencies while left of centre believe greater power delivers effective decision-making.

Unfortunately, few analyse and identify the problems within local government and fewer still determine with any real clarity what the appropriate role and function of local government should be. Even determination of 'local' and its importance in our community is rarely considered. Few understand that the evidence from amalgamation around the world is bigger is usually more bureaucratic and expensive.

Predicted savings never materialise but the loss of local decision-making certainly does.

There are problems in the efficient and effective delivery of local government services but we really do need to determine the real cause.

Given the nature of communities today, new and innovative thinking is required. Our modern communities are more complex, fluid, and diverse but we seem intent on imposing nineteenth century philosophy of monopolistic and rigid centralised control.

No single organisation can perform effectively and efficiently all the tasks demanded of local government whatever their size. And the evidence from around the world suggests that large centralised

organisations are less able to respond to local needs and generally operate much higher cost structures.

In fact many of the world's largest and most successful urban areas have numerous local government units. For example, the Paris area has more than 1,300 municipal governments and the Tokyo area has more than 225. This means that internationally it is a given that councils may undertake activities or make certain choices to reflect their different communities. Local democracy is valued.

Why would we sacrifice the benefits of greater ratepayer and resident participation to create a larger government that costs more, provides services that are less likely to meet local preferences, and ultimately deliver a less than satisfactory result. If local government is inherently an expression of local democracy then the debate should be about better provision and delivery of service whilst maintaining strong local democracy.

Not about size of structure.

So we should not rush to assume that bigger local government is going to give us a cheaper and more effective service. In New Zealand local communities and therefore local democracy has already limited participation in the determination of the priorities and functions of their local authority.

We should not give up more local decision-making unless we are very sure the predicted benefits are real. And, if they are it will be a world first!

by Ian Walker

Ian Walker

The current government is currently in the process of changing the local government legislation, keen to reorganise local government with emphasis on amalgamation because they believe it will reduce waste, improve both decision-making, and create greater economies of scale. Many ratepayers disgruntled with their local council are in full support of this approach

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy. Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly. For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller. This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible. We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors. There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy. For sensible advice on Upgrades, find your local Milfos dealer or Area Sales Manager at www.milfos.com.

Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen

It was fantastic to see many of our clients and to meet so many others interested in our products. Thanks for your company and enthusiasm, it made our Fieldays special.

After a long and often contentious eight year wait, the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) scheme finally arrived on July 1st 2012 for cattle (with deer to follow in March).

The benefits to the industry are well reported, with birth to processing traceability, and the ability to react quickly to biosecurity threats if they arise.

The Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) eartags are the key to the system, with a range of around a metre, depending on tag brand and model.

The RFID ear tag technology does one thing and that is to individually identify an animal. In this respect it can also be used for a number of other things.

RFID is an integral part of herd management and is used in many ways around the milking parlour. Automatic drafting is quite common, as is in bail animal ID on rotary milking machines (which can be

linked to milk data and feeding decisions), and walk over weighing just to name a few.

What is an initial expense in the tags can lead to savings over time with easy automatic drafting during mating or improvements in herd information such as weight or in bail data like yield, fat, protein, lactose, and mastitis detection. There are a lot of options to choose from.

All of these improvements and more are available through your local Milfos Service Partner or visit www.milfos.com for details.

Fieldays 2012 was a resounding success. There were people from all over New Zealand and around the world, and visitor numbers were high.
