Increased demand fordairy mentoring service

by Denise Gunn

Low milk prices have seen a record number of farmers using DairyNZ’s Dairy Connect service over the past three months.

The service, which was initiated in 2012, has grown significantly. Farmers provide support and advice on a range of subjects from animal management, staff, pasture and feed through to environment, business, adverse events and personal wellbeing.

DairyNZ Dairy Connect m a n a g e r, J a n i n e Broekhuizen, said the numbers of farmers volunteering their time for the service has doubled in the past year, from 225 to 420.

“Despite going through tough times themselves, these farmers really want to support others by sharing their experience.

“Many support farmers have agreed to be part of this because they have received valuable advice in the past.”

Almost 60 connections have been facilitated over the last three months — a 50 per cent increase over the same period last year.

“Now, more than ever, the dairy industry is showing its biggest strength and that is the willingness to share information.”

Janine encourages farmers to use the service.

“If it is your first time experiencing an issue, the amount of information out there can be quite overwhelming.

“A few phone calls to someone with experience can provide a lot of confidence — I really encourage those who need some advice to use Dairy Connect.”

Share milkers Ben and Belinda Price were more than happy to help when

asked to take part in Dairy Connect as support farmers.

The couple, who are 50/50 share milking north of Wanganui, won the 2016 Taranaki Share Farmer of the Year title.

“We’ve worked our way up the share milking ladder,” said Belinda. The Price’s have been involved with the service for a few months and were matched with another couple to support.

“They ask specific questions and we tell them what we’ve done to help them along,” said Belinda.

“We help to put them on the right track.”

Belinda said they’ve found Dairy Connect to be a very positive service.

“It’s farmers helping other farmers.”

Janine Broekhuizen, DairyNZ Dairy Connect manager

Manawatu venue for 2017 Young Farmers Grand Final

Manawatu has gained the hosting rights for next year’s Young Farmer of the Year Grand Final.

The competition’s sessions, which will see contestants in battles around agricultural knowledge, people and practical skills, and mental fortitude, will be split between Palmerston North and Feilding.

Farmers’ Mutual Group (FMG) is the new principal sponsor of the contest.

FMG CEO Chris Black said the three-day event promotes calculated risks, innovation, competition, collaboration, idea sharing leadership and achievement.

In announcing the winning bid, New Zealand Young Farmers CEO Terry Copeland expressed his delight for the Manawatu region to once again showcase the ultimate rural challenge.

“It’s going to be another fantastic event in the agricultural hub of New Zealand” he said.

“And it is fitting that Feilding will again be involved as it marks 90 years since the first Young Farmers Club was established there in 1927.” Palmerston North last hosted the national event in 2009. Manawatu district mayor Margaret Kouvelis said future farming will be the career to aspire to. “The farmer of the future will need to be intelligent, a

global thinker, better informed, more innovative and incredibly agile, so we need to have our top brains focussed on our agricultural well-being.”

Palmerston North city mayor Grant Smith strongly supported the bid to host the event in the region.

He said the event is an attractive incentive for rural urban engagement.

“This is all about people in Palmerston North getting a first-hand experience of what future farming is about.

“This announcement demonstrates yet again the importance of the successful collaborative approach with the district as New Zealand’s defining agribusiness hub.”

Co-convenors of the event, Paul Olsen and Steph Sloan, are excited to showcase the considerable depth and diversity the region has to officer.“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Manawatu district and city to collaborate where the local Young Farmers Clubs have gone from strength to strength,” said Paul. “This is in line with our 2017 theme ‘Growing Intelligent Farmers’ — all the qualities needed to be successful in farming today and into the future.”

Next year’s final will be held in July.

It was through a friend that Renae initially became involved in the dairy industry.

“They took me to milk some cows one day and I was hooked,” said Renae.

A few months later, at the age of 18, Renae took up her first job milking cows in the Manawatu. “When I was 21, I left the dairy industry for a few years to try a few other career paths.”

This year’s Manawatu Dairy Manager of the Year, Renae Flett, grew up in the city. Although her family weren’t connected to

farming or the rural life, she rode horses from a young age and developed a passion for animals.

Renae is this year’s Manawatu Dairy Manager of the Year

After a year’s employment at an RD 1 store, Renae worked with racehorses while continuing relief milking. She returned to the dairy industry when she was 24 years old.

“It just took me awhile to find my ‘the one’ job which I now have,” she said.

“I still get on very well with each of my previous employers and still catch up with them when I can.”

Completing up to level five in Production Management through Primary-ITO has helped Renae to further her dairy industry knowledge. Renae has steadily worked her way up the ladder, beginning as a farm assistant in the Manawatu before moving into second-in-charge positions in the Taranaki, Manawatu and Tararua regions. The

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERSSave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthySave money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

29-year-old is now into her second season as farm manager on Peter and Kim Bills’ farm near Linton.

“The farm I currently work on belongs to my partner Brayden’s parents,” said Renae.

The 180ha farm has a 107ha effective milking platform with a herd of 250 predominantly Friesian cows. Last season’s target of 100,000kgMS was surpassed with the total figure of 107,000kgMS. This year the herd is on target to meet 100,000kgMS.

Renae said due to the low payout, all the calf milk was taken out of the vat this season to use as a substitute for milk powder. Hay and baleage are grown on the farm. Barley is grown on an 80ha adjoining bull and cropping block.

“We grow our barley crop that we chop and put into a bag to use end of March and April/May.

“We also grow winter oats on that block to green feed to around 100 late calving cows that will be wintered on that block.”

Two years ago, Renae joined the Opiki Young Farmers Club. Her involvement with the Young Farmers movement has given Renae the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new friends.

She’s also just been given the leadership manager role with the regional Taranaki/Manawatu committee. For the past two years she has been the official photographer for the Taranaki/Manawatu regional final.

“My interest in photography I guess just popped up. I used to always take pictures of everything I did or anything

on the farm I liked.” said Renae. Renae’s friends often commented on her photos and her passion for photography grew, along with her following.

“I absolutely love being able to take and create photos of my everyday farming experiences that people can enjoy. It’s even more amazing to be asked to photograph people’s weddings and events.”

Along with taking out the 2016 Manawatu Dairy Manager of the Year title, Renae also collected four merit awards. She plans to complete another

season as manager then progress to contract milking or lower order share milking.

Renae and Brayden would like to be 50 per cent share milking with up to 300 cows in three years’ time, followed by farm ownership within 10–15 years.

“I would like to massively thank Brayden for all his support through the recent dairy industry awards, and to the farm owners, Peter and Kim. I couldn’t have done it all without them and everybody else that helped me out — it was very much appreciated.”

However, it wasn’t until the couple emigrated from the United Kingdom and settled in New

Zealand five years ago that they were able to realise this dream.

Sharon and Glenn bought a 10-acre lifestyle block in the Horowhenua area and their first two Arapawa goats arrived shortly afterwards.

The Arapawa goats are one of the rarest goat breeds in the world. The breed is thought to descend from a pair of Old English goats released by Captain James Cook onto Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds in 1773. The Old English goat breed is now extinct.

In the 1970s, when the goats came under threat of eradication, Arapawa Island resident, Betty Rowe, was instrumental in preventing a cull by

the New Zealand Government’s Forest Service. Now however, the Department of Conservation (DOC) regularly culls the goats with their priority to protect native fauna and flora on the island.

According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, Arapawa goats are critically close to extinction.

This information, particularly with the British connection, sparked Sharon and Glen’s interest in helping the breed’s survival. The small size of these animals appealed too.

“Also the fact they are critically endangered due to the DOC trying to eradicate them from the island due to seeing them as pests,” said Sharon.

The couple’s first arrival of Arapawa goats was young twins — a male and female.

“The wether died of goat polio after about six months which was devastating to us,” said Sharon.

“The vet said there was no obvious cause and that this can happen with young goats.”

Sharon and Glenn bought another female Arapawa goat in 2013, followed by a two-year-old male for breeding last year.

“We have also just bought another girl in January who was five days old, so are bottle feeding.”

With importance placed on expanding the gene pool, Sharon and Glenn have sourced their goats from different

breeders. Two of their goats were bought from Alison Sutherland who runs the New Zealand Arapawa Goat Association.

“She has been wonderful in helping us learn all we need to know,” said Sharon.

“The New Zealand Arapawa Goat Association (NZAGA) is made up of a group of people from around the world who are passionate about the survival and welfare of this beautiful, critically at-risk breed of small goat.

“There are only a handful of breeders, which now includes us, in New Zealand.”

The couple hope to buy another couple of female Arapawa goats soon. Long-term they plan to keep some of

their own kids to breed from their own line.

“We would need another unrelated male to be able to do this,” said Sharon.

“I would also like to try my hand at milking some of our girls once the babies have gone.”

There are approximately 200 Arapawa goats on the New Zealand Arapawa Goat Association register — only entire males and females can be registered. This number includes six Arapawa goats that either belong to or were bred by Sharon and Glenn.

Long-term plans include keeping some of their own kids to breed from

Countdown till game timeOne of the biggest events on the rural calendar — the start of the game bird hunting season — is just around the corner and approaching fast.

Hunters are being reminded to make sure they are well prepared and have everything they need ahead of Opening Day — Saturday, May 7.

Wellington Fish and Game manager Phil Teal says preparation goes beyond dressing the maimai and dusting off the decoys.

“Schooling up on the regulations for the season is something every hunter should factor into their pre-season routine. Regulations like daily bag limits can change from year-to-year depending on the state of the bird populations.”

With the increase in duck numbers in the Manawatu area this year, the Wellington Fish and Game Council has decided on more liberal regulations for the 2016 season.

Mr Teal says “a daily bag limit for mallard will be eight birds and the season will also extended to eight weeks, giving hunters increased opportunities for hunting.”

One rule that always remains the same is the ban on the use of lead shot within 200m of water.

A D V E RT O R I A L

All the regulations for the coming season will be strictly enforced by the team of Fish and Game rangers who will be out in force checking on compliance.

“Hunters need to ensure they have a current game bird hunting licence too,” adds Mr Teal.

He says it is important to note that farmers who do not live on the property they farm must buy a game licence to hunt waterfowl.

The ‘occupier privilege’, allowed under Section 19 of the Wildlife Act, permits occupiers to hunt game without a licence only on the farmland on which they live permanently. This privilege also applies to the occupier’s wife or husband, and one son or one daughter.

“People hunting under occupier privilege should still acquire a copy of the hunting regulations,” says Mr Teal.

“The safety message remains the same for opening weekend every year. Follow the seven basic rearms safety rules — there’s no room for complacency — and have a safe and successful start to the season.”

For more information on the upcoming season, contact Wellington Fish and Game on 03 359 0409.

New markets new opportunitiesby John K Morris CEO of Agrissentials

In my last article I wrote about xing free nitrogen from the atmosphere to help reduce your on farm cost factors. This nitrogen is completely natural, stores well in the soil for release on demand, has no cost factor, is environmentally friendly and promotes clover growth.

Today, I’m on track to set your farm up for certi ed natural input production so that you can take advantage of the higher prices being paid for certi ed food.

This new consumer demand for safe, certi ed, nutritiously dense food, re ected strongly during the meltdown in prices for commodity milk powder during autumn last year, with organic milk powder selling at as high as $14,800 USD per tonne. This new market for certi ed milk, meat and produce is here to stay, so your best move is to join the certi ed system and set your sights on gathering in top money for you and your future. This opportunity will only continue to grow.

Today’s conventional chemical production system has passed its use by date. There is a brand new market out there which is not accessible with chemical production. Chemical production has locked the farmers into commodity markets with low payout. We desperately need to get back on track with a production system that not only enhances your soil like Agrissentials best on earth fertilisers do but also your production, your quality, your farm, your environment and your bank account. Agrissentials have developed a system that works alongside Mother Nature.

Gaining all the bene ts she provides like sunlight, rain, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, micro-organisms, worms, enzymes and the list goes on. In a live, living soil, your farm will attract more moisture, your healthy pasture and plants will absorb more sunlight (photosynthesis) and your soil will store more mineral and more water. This system transfers on into the environment, increasing the wildlife, bee populations and frog population, that’s when we really begin working with Mother Nature on a full time basis — it’s magic!

The biodiversity of nature is important to each and every one of us cohabitating on this planet. We need to preserve and look after the whole environment, where farms and production units are all part of the whole eco system working with Mother Nature and taking care of all the free natural capital that she provides to make everything sustainable for continuous top quality production.

The rst plant appeared 460 million years ago and the planet has done a great job providing for all life on its surface and under the sea ever since. There is no need to stop farming; our planet is a great provider. However there

A D V E RT O R I A L

is a real and urgent need to farm more sustainably with a natural production system like Agrissentials where our best on earth fertilisers do not cause erosion of top soil, nor water pollution. With only a minor change in food production methods, we can turn this whole situation around.

Agrissentials is leading the way in regenerating and remineralising soils in New Zealand with our multi mineral, microbial rich fertilisers. Since pioneering this industry over 20 years ago, we have stood by farmers and helped them reach success after success.

European design and quality - Over 50 years experience in developing milk cooling tanks and one of Europe’s leading Dairy Cooling Systems producers for the needs of farmers around the world – from Mexico to Japan, from Russia to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Horizontal Milk Cooling Tanks with Iced Water Cooling – 50% more effective in cooling the milk compared to standard direct expansion systems without any risk of freezing the milk due to the water temperature of +0.5 > 1.0degC.

Highly suitable for AMS (Robotic Farming Systems) with low milk flows – no risk of freezing the milk.

Energy Saving with Packo Ice Builders (PIB’s) – thanks to the ice energy store build-up during night time hours, a smaller refrigeration unit can be installed plus the potential savings of off-peak power rates.

Water Saving with PIB’s – bore water pre-cooling is not necessary with the correctly sized PIB. This is ideal for drought prone regions or where water supplies are restricted.

Improved Milk quality through Snap Chilling = potentially a higher return adding PROFITS to the farm.

For 30yrs Eurotec has been supplying the NZ Refrigeration Industry with leading Global Brands. The only NZ supplier of this technology providing nationwide coverage and After Sales Support with branches in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with over 30 Approved Refrigeration Installers throughout the country from Invercargill to Whangarei.

Don’t focus on things you cannot changeThe current dairy farming situation

is a disaster. It is time to get serious. There are some things happening around us which are outside our control: • The weather • The payout

Although there is a lot of daily discussion about these two points, there is little we can do to change them. Anyone can allow themselves to be completely overwhelmed if they focus on the disaster itself and how it is affecting them.

One factor which is true in today’s payout is that there are many farmers feeling the same way.

It is of paramount importance to stop worrying about what can’t be changed and focus on the things that can.

During 35 years of farming, similar to many longer term farmers, I have been challenged by floods, droughts, earthquakes, family upheavals, and plenty of times when there is too much MONTH left at the end of the MONEY.

What I have learned, is your family and friends are the most important units which will help you through so focus on a plan ahead, utilising help from experienced people willing to share it. Never underestimate the counsel from the old boys who have long since put their gumboots away. This is not a short-term problem so we can not have a short-term plan.

There are times where drastic action can be taken which could be detrimental to long-term farm performance.

Signs of a short-term plan which can end up costing you include: • Long-term contracts and high use of palm kernel should be avoided. PK should be used strategically unless this can be proven to be cost efficient relative to your system;

• High and regular use of urea nitrogen in any form. This practise over time will burn off the humus in your soil, strip out calcium and block copper — restricting the soil’s ability to grow nutrient-rich grass; Analysing your complete system from

and including; soil, grass, feed, stock, effluent, finance, and family are needed before a plan can be made.

Every aspect of the entire system needs efficient management. Every area of management needs to be measured, if you don’t measure it, you can’t manage it. The cheapest and most important asset you have is your grass, your most important investment is the fuel to grow it.

There are several points which I have observed which can be applied for a long — term sustainable plan: • Soil audit and apply fertiliser custom blends prioritising where any deficiencies lie;

• Don’t waste money on generic blends which will increase nutrients already adequate,

• Don’t guess. A good soil audit will save you money.Obviously this column does not allow

coverage of the whole system, yet most problems related to feed quality, animal health, effluent, positive cashflow and profitability all originate from the soil.

Soil is the engine room of your entire farming operation. A balanced approach will not only increase quality grass growth, it will reduce reliance on buying in feed, improve animal health and reduce crusting problems in your effluent pond.

Forward Farming Consultancy offers a service which seeks solutions to help farmers and includes specialists in soil fertility, grazing management, ruminant nutrition, effluent management and financial assistance.

How much does it cost? How much are you willing to pay to minimise your lameness cost? I guess the answer would be ‘as much as it takes as long as the benefits exceed the cost’.

Lameness costs a lot of money even in a low payout year. It is difficult to give money away if you haven’t got any to give away. In a low payout year the cost won’t be as high as in a high payout year due to lower cow prices, and the loss of milk production is less costly because of lower milk prices. However, the cost is much more critical. You simply just cannot afford to have your cows under-performing in a financially difficult year.

The trick is to get as much out of your cows with the least amount of cost. In order to do that the basic needs of the cow must be met. This way she will be producing well and have the least amount of problems, including lameness.

Many people don’t know or don’t appreciate the importance of this fact, yet it is quite observable when you look at cow behaviour.

Most farmers that move to a 16-hour milking schedule towards the end

Hoof Printwith Fred Hoekstra HOOF TRIMMING SERVICES, EQUIPMENT & TRAINING

of the season report that their cows move faster back to the paddock, milk production stays the same and they have less lameness. What has changed for the cows when they are only being milked every 16 hours instead of every 12 hours?

Well, the short answer is that you are giving your cow more time in the paddock. This means that the cows are getting more time to behave in a natural manner. Look at a well-fed herd in the paddock. What are they doing?

How are they behaving? They graze, lay down, drink and do some socialising. This is obviously normal, natural behaviour or at least as close to it as the cow can get in the environment in which we put them.

What do cows do in the yard? They just stand there waiting. It is quite a different behaviour from what they are showing us in the paddock. If cows are spending a lot of time just standing

in the paddock and doing nothing other than standing, then there is a problem. If we force our cows to take on a different behaviour pattern to what they would choose themselves then you can expect problems. That sounds reasonable doesn’t it? You could argue that cows would get used to a different behaviour as they are creatures of habit. However, if it is true that the forced behaviour is not an issue for the cows then why are they improving so quickly when that forced behaviour is reduced? So, what is my point?

I am not saying that we should cut out all forced behaviour. A cow needs to be milked and the farm needs to run practically. What I am saying is that the forced behaviour should be kept to an absolute minimum.

If you don’t think this is a big deal, just ask your cows. See if they will change their behaviour when they get more paddock time. The aim should be to let the cows behave as naturally as possible for the most time possible. That may mean milking every 16 hours, having smaller herds, being more efficient with milking or anything else you can think of, but it does not need to cost much to minimise your lameness cost.

Training a working dogA D V E RT O R I A LA D V E RT O R I A L

Working dogs are a necessity on most farms that carry livestock and if a dog doesn’t understand basic commands, disasters invariably happen; valuable time is lost, along with pro ts due to injured stock and broken fences.

Anna Holland devoted 25 years to shepherding, developing a passion for breeding and training farm dogs in that time, now she is a regular columnist writing about the care and training of these dogs.

“Training a working farm dog is completely different to training every other dog. Farm dogs are responsible for large numbers of valuable animals and they are required to be energetic, working unconstrained and running free; small at paddocks and big steep hill country require dogs of different calibres,” she says.

Since her rst day clinic in the Manawatu for a group from Rural Women, Anna has held 40 Teaching People Dog Training clinics throughout New Zealand. “A wide range of people come, men and women of all ages. The youngest attendee was a nine year old boy and occasionally people who are in their seventies.”

When asked what commands a working dog should have, Anna is adamant “perfect recall, a good stop, a go slow, a right and a left, and walk towards stock; add others depending on

your needs.” Anna’s clinics start at 9am and nish at 4pm. “It’s really full on, we have lots to cover, there is so much to show people. They don’t bring dogs; they watch, they learn and then train their dogs at home.”

Ef uent management solutionThere are many challenges confronting the management on dairy farms, particularly inside the farm gate. One such problem is ef uent. This was a concern for local Rongotea farmer, Chris Russell.

Chris, with his sons Andrew and Daniel, run a farm which milks approximately 600 cows with a two pond ef uent system. The farm also has a feed pad, and any spilt feed along with dung are scraped directly from the pad to the rst pond.

The problem the Russells had was the ever-present thick crusted pond, which was even a challenge to the purpose built stirrer agitating the ef uent, preparing it for its journey through to the irrigator then onto the farm.

The normal course of action would be to haul the solids out with the farm digger or go to the expense of putting in a weeping wall or a solids separator. Both of these solutions would have worked well, but the cost was a stumbling block.

After an advertisement seen in a local farming magazine, a different, and perhaps unconventional approach was investigated by the Russell family.

This approach looks at ef uent as a big picture and maintains that heavily crusted ponds are a symptom of management, and the conventional approach of separating the solids is not needed if the causes are investigated and addressed.

After 10 months of working this new system, which is all about understanding what ef uent is and why problems occur, then treating them accordingly, has proved itself to be cost effective and superior to conventional methods.

The Russell family are now enjoying a liquid pond digesting all of their ef uent problems with a lot less use of even the stirrer or the farm digger.

A eld day will be held on the Russell Farm on Saunders Road to discuss and share the results of this ef uent management system on Thursday May 5.

23 Manchester Street, Feilding

Dealing a pair of acesBack in the early 1980s, there would have been few people in the world who knew what a ‘sport utility vehicle’ actually was — let alone how to design and build one. The English gentry had their land rovers for grouse hunting, the army had their off-road vehicles for the pursuit of — at the time — communist militias, and Joe Citizen drove a sensible big saloon car or station wagon.

The change came at the start of that tumultuous decade of big hair and leg warmers. Toyota’s FJ, the original Range Rover, and Mitsubishi’s Pajero changed the way we looked at off-road travel. Soon would come the leather seats, mini bars, school run specials and faux-wheel-drives. But in the springtime of the SUV, Pajero was a big name. Now it’s set to become so again.

This year sees the relaunch of the badge from Mitsubishi, replacing the outgoing Challenger with two variants, in much the same way that Mercedes

has achieved with their GL-E class. The Pajero returns with a solid, angular look, backed up by the power of a 3.2 litre intercooled turbo diesel. Combine the over 400Nm of torque from this power plant with acres of grip, and you can appreciate how the Pajero achieves its rated three ton towing capacity. Inside, we are reminded that the modern driver demands more comforts than his 1980s counterpart — it’s all here, but so too, is a convenient space for a second battery under the hood, and everything in place for the fitting of bars, winches, lights

Smooth operator — the Pajero Sport rounds out the hard lines of its bigger brother, but still conquers mud and snow

and other off-road necessities. This is the marque which monstered the Paris to Dakar for ten years. The only small complaint — the colour palette doesn’t match the presence of the Pajero’s design, with only ‘high resale value’ neutrals and metallics available. One of these in hot orange would turn more heads than the second coming. Sitting next to the Pajero in the new Mitsubishi lineup is its slick and aerodynamic little brother, the Pajero Sport. If the big bruiser above is all about power and capability, then this offering is more of a crossover into the realm of comfort and connectivity.

Don’t get us wrong — the pair of Pajeros blur the line nicely, and

the Sport is still no slouch when the going gets rough. But it puts style and sophistication to the fore, for the driver who will only rarely venture off the beaten track.

When you do need to test the mettle of the Sport, it proves it’s no show pony. A very clever off-road mode selector juggles power, grip and torque to handle everything from sand to ice.

So, a pair of competent and stylish new machines, worthy of their predecessor’s nametag. The hard part here will not be deciding if they are a contender against the likes of Toyota and Ford — but which one to pick. Where to find a suitable shade of candy-orange paint.

Technology reaching for the skyby Andy Bryenton

Every new car and ute seems to have a fancy new badge these days, touting some electronic or engineering wizardry under the hood. It almost harks back to the days of American luxury cars in the 50s, with their Torque-flite, Power-max marketing. But there’s one badge attached to Mazda bumpers which actually means more than most — the Skyactiv brand associated with their 21st century engine technology.

As early as 2008 the back-room boys at Mazda were on a quest to increase efficiency and power using what would become the Skyactiv method — increased compression and ideal combustion. A normal petrol engine only unlocks about 30 per cent of the chemical energy in its fuel — a terrible waste when seen in raw figures. At the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, Mazda unveiled a gasoline engine they dubbed Skyactiv-G. With its high compression, the little 1.3 wowed spectators with its power output.

But they weren’t going to stop there. You see, increasing compression was always going to be an answer to some of the problem of unlocking the power of fuel. But the traditional downside of doing this is ‘engine knock’ — a product of waste gases and inefficiency in the ignition cycle.

Tightening up design in the exhaust system, in the injectors, the air induction system, and reducing the

combustion duration to a short, sharp controlled detonation have allowed the Skyactiv engine to achieve a 14:1 compression ratio — unheard of in mass-produced cars.

The results were immediate and measurable — a 15 per cent increase in fuel efficiency and torque. A similar diesel engine was designed, delivering the same kind of advances. But the credo of the Skyactiv programme explains why Mazda engineers did not simply rush right into production at this point.

‘Stop at nothing to deliver the very best in everything about cars, be it their safety and fuel efficiency or simply how fun they are to drive’.

Consequently, before Skyactiv engine tech was unleashed on the road, a whole new series of transmissions had to be designed as well. Eschewing the trendy double-clutch layout as pioneered by the likes of Ferrari, Mazda re-invented the automatic, taking strain off the

Under the hood — the Skyactiv badge represents a significant advance in economy and power

torque converter by incorporating an active clutch plate as well. The resulting six-speed box makes the most of the extra torque unlocked by Skyactiv’s high compression. Engineers then overhauled the way Mazda built bodies

and chassis components too. The end result is a range of cars far ahead of their predecessors. Next time you see the Skyactiv badge on a new Mazda, you know that it means close to a decade of technical research!
