FENCING TROUGHS

Crowd numbers up at this year’s eld days

Three days of fine weather helped draw in the crowds to this year’s Central Districts Field Days.

Event manager, Cheryl Riddell, said around the same number of visitors as last year went through the gate on the first day.

“But Friday and Saturday’s numbers were up.”

Last year’s crowd numbers topped close to 39,000.

The Central Districts Field Days was brought forward a week early this year to co-ordinate with the Northland and South Island Agricultural Field Days. The change of date allowed time for exhibitors to travel and attend all three events.

Held at Manfeild Park in Feilding, 538 exhibitors promoted their products and services. And while the dry conditions around the country may have kept some farmers wallets closed, there were still some big gear items sold.

“Everyone seemed to have a good feel about it (the field days),” said Ms Riddell.

Several competitions were held during the three-day event.

Twelve excavator operators representing each region around New Zealand, took part in the 2013 National Excavator Operator competition.

James Lux, of Fulton Hogan in the Bay of Plenty, won the competition which is now into its 18th year.

Second placegetter, Matthew Hareb of M. Hareb Excavating in Taranaki, won the competition in  2011. Steve Galbraith of Gair Contracting in Hawke’s Bay came third.

Competitors from all over the central and lower North Island took part in the Goldpine Doubles Power Fencing event.

Father and son team, Paul and Jason van Beers of Porangahau won the competition. Mark Lambert of Bulls and Jeff Joines from the Kapiti Coast placed second.

Tractorpull competition entries were well up on last year.

Tractorpull New Zealand chairman Vaughan Coy said the general consensus was the new single day format was a winner among the busy contractors.

“A big thank you to Norwood Farm Machinery Centre who stepped up to sponsor the event and provided machinery and manpower.”

Sam Harris won the standard class in the tractor pull competition, Aaron Nicholson came first in the pre-81 section, Chanika Hallett took out the modified, and Art Maandonks won the sport section.

With traditional underhand and standing chop events, axe throwing and crosscut sawing, as well as stock and modified chainsaw match racing, there was also plenty of action at the Stihl TimberAces site.

The Best of Beef competition, held in conjunction with the Central Districts Field Days drew exhibitors from the lower North Island and Hawke’s Bay.

Sue Wylie of Ratalea Simmentals in Takapau won the prestigious Meat and Wool Cup.

Plenty of action and woodchips flying at the Stihl TimberAce site.

Plenty of action at Young Farmers regional nal

Hot temperatures made tasks more difficult as the eight contestants battled it out on the practical day in Palmerston North. Competitors worked steadily through several modules, which covered working with fencing, GPS and spraying, sheep, butchery and cooking, dairy, machinery and water.

Creating an artistic focal point for the foyer at the evening show tested competitors on their floral arrangements skills. And an agri-sports challenge saw them race against the clock to perform a number of set tasks which included changing the tyres on a quad bike, building a sled, bagging potatoes, and filling a paddling pool before sitting in it to drink a bottle of fizzy and eat a can of spaghetti. Despite an initial error placing the tyres on the wrong side of the quad bike, Pete Fitz-Herbert made up time to win the agri-sports challenge. Calvin Ball took out the agri-growth challenge.

Contestants had to don a suit for the evening’s event which included a quiz and giving a speech. Cam gained the most points for his speech while Nigel led the way answering the questions.

As well as placing first overall, Cam also won the agri-business and agri-skills challenges.

Cam, a 30-year-old dairy farmer from Eketahuna and chairman of the Fitzherbert Club had a solid support team behind him.

“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity,” said Cam.

“I had a wide range of people behind me to offer their expertise and help me upskill.”

Cam will now prepare for the New Zealand Young Farmer Grand Final in Auckland from May 16-18.

The Taranaki/Manawatu AgriKids NZ and TeenAg regional finals were also held on the same day in Palmerston North.

Teams from Ngaere School came first and second with South Makirikiri School placing third in the AgriKids NZ section.

Palmerston North Boys High School teams took out first and third placings in the TeenAg with a Feilding High School team taking second place.

“There were some very eager and keen competitors,” said AgriKids NZ and TeenAg Project Leader Josie Hampton.

“It was great to see the first all-girls teams make it into the top three for both the AgriKidsNZ and TeenAg Competitions.”

The top three teams from each competition are invited to the Grand Final in Auckland on May 17.

It was a close finish at the recent Taranaki/Manawatu Young Farmers Regional Final with Cam Brown winning the event by a narrow margin of just three points from second placegetter Nigel Will.

Teams from Ngaere School came first and second with South Makirikri School placing third in the AgriKids NZ section

John, Sandy and Katherine Moore of Triple M Stud had reared several different breeds of calves on their Taranaki lifestyle block before settling on Lowline cattle. It was the easy calving ability, fast growth aspect, and ease of handling that drew the family to the breed.

The size of the Lowline also appealed to the Moore family as the breed is ideally suited to

lifestyle blocks and don’t pug the ground in wet conditions.

“They also have kid appeal and good temperaments,” said Sandy.

A three-year-old in-calf heifer was the first Lowline to arrive on the Moore’s property in Eltham, producing a calf in October 2005. Five months later the Moore’s bought a bull calf. When he matured, he gave Triple M Stud their first crop of calves.

“We sold him in December 2009 to a dairy farmer as we did not want to put him over his own progeny,” said Sandy.

“We have used AB and an outside bull since then.”

The Moore family currently have six Lowline cattle on their four-acre block; two young bulls from this past season’s crop of calves which will be sold on and four females to calve this coming season.

“We try and breed all our females each season and they have their first calves as three-year-olds,” said Sandy.

The calves are small and compact with a birthweight of 18 — 24kgs.

“They hit the ground feisty, ready for life and never look back.”

Triple M Stud’s bull calves are sold to dairy farmers for heifer and tail-off mating.

“We also sell to fellow Lowline lovers

and to lifestylers who want a small size

and something easy to handle.”

SinusitisSinusitis just refers to

in ammation of the sinus membranes. Usually the in ammation is caused by an infection like the cold virus, other times the in ammation is a response to an allergen or a faulty immune system response. Regardless of the cause, in most cases chronic sinusitis is an indication of a poorly functioning immune system. The target of therapy is topical, trying to sterilise the nasal passages, and then to target the immune system chaos.

Our respiratory tract from our nose to our lungs is lined with special tissue called respiratory epithelium. The role of this mucus secreting membrane is to help protect us from airborne germs and allergens and then to act as our internal air conditioning system to lter air, to control humidity, regulate temperature and to protect our vulnerable lungs.

When working well it is a brilliant piece of design effectively linking and regulating the outside world from our sensitive internal tissues and organs. However when it malfunctions it causes all sorts of misery. Last week I commented that I had 15 years of lower respiratory problems. During this period I also lived with chronic sinusitis which brings the joy of a sinus headache and regular

infections. Fortunately these are no longer part of my life.

This is one group of problems that can respond really well to nutritional therapy. Nutritional medicine practitioner Robert Iker recommends developing a systematic programme for chronic sinusitis. This includes practising nasal hygiene with steaming and irrigating, having a healthy anti-in ammatory diet and taking antioxidant and anti-in ammatory supplements.

My advice is similar but I like to add colloidal silver as a nasal spray to help keep nasal passages sterile. To this I add a cocktail of antioxidants based on OPC’s (grape seed extract) vitamin C, bio avonoids, trace minerals and many more. For adults my base supplements are up to 8000mg of sh oils and a comprehensive multi antioxidant/mineral plus another 200mg of pure OPC, 2000mg of vitamin C and 500mg of mixed bio avonoids. If low vitamin D levels are suspected or con rmed, we also add vitamin D, often with an intensive period then a lower maintenance level. This seems to help reduce mucous membrane in ammation, mucous secretion and help to reduce susceptibility of infections. Call me if you need help or more information.

Aberdeen Angus breed as part of a major breeding research project at Australia’s Trangie Agricultural Research Centre in the early 1970s. The bulls average 105cm in height and weigh between 450-500kg. At 100cm tall, the cows are slightly smaller, weighing on average 350kg.

Following the release of the Lowline onto the market in 1993, the first of the breed arrived in New Zealand two years later.

The Moore family believe beef cattle are more suited to hill country to build muscle while foraging for food. As their lifestyle block is a mixture of flat and gentle sloping land, feed is monitored carefully to avoid cattle becoming overweight as this can lead onto foot and health problems.

“Lowlines require good grass with a good grazing management plan in place,” said Sandy.

During the winter, baleage and hay are fed out to the cattle. In the lead-up to a show, their feed is further supplemented with cattle nuts and Fiber Pro.

Sandy said this puts the final gloss and finishing touch to their coats and conditions. It also rewards them for the halter, lead training and constant grooming they are given.

Although Sandy and daughter Katherine (14) have previously shown

their cattle as far north as Kumeu, and Horowhenua in the south, they regularly attend shows in Stratford, Egmont and Manawatu. Each year they compete at the Best of Beef promotion and show held in conjunction with the Central Districts Field Days. Bi-annually the pair also show their cattle in the Waikato.

“The aim is to get them in the public eye and support other breeders who show and promote them,” said Sandy.

“We travel them in a regular horse float but make sure we have plenty of time to clean and present them in their respective classes.”

Preparations begin around a month before the first show of the season. The cattle are brought into the yards each evening, weather permitting, and haltered, groomed and led.

“This is particularly important for the calves who we may or may not have had time to halter break and lead train.

“Some shows require nose clips so these are put in as part of the yarding so you don’t have a massive argument on the day of the show.”

Sandy said this is Katherine’s speciality.

“She has a very natural way with the baby stock and they have a natural want-to-do what she’s asking of them, usually without any fear.”

The evening before a show, the cattle are shampooed, and ears, polls and toplines trimmed. Feet, eyes and ears are also cleaned.

Sandy said the main challenge when showing is to keep the cattle and themselves clean, calm and prepared ahead of time so there is no rush.

Triple M Stud cattle have had numerous successes in the show ring and Katherine has also been recognised for her ability as a handler.

The Moore family aim to continue breeding the Lowline to produce a top grade animal, have fun and educate people about the breed.

Paddy was just 11 years old when he started out calf-riding. He soon showed his aptitude for the sport, winning a calf-riding title in his first year. At age

14 he progressed to steer riding, then began competing in second division bull riding, breaking into the open class and riding the big bulls soon after he turned 16. On several occasions he has represented New Zealand in both Australia and the United States. Last year he added to his list of accomplishments, taking out Bull Riding New Zealand’s open championship and placing fourth in the Nebraska State Final in the United States.

Now at age 18, Paddy is a regular on the New Zealand rodeo circuit, travelling from Kaitaia to Invercargill.

This year he will return to compete in the United States for the third time. Paddy first travelled to the USA in 2011 at the age of 16 to ride open bulls there.

QUICK HEARING CHECK

Have you ever worked in a noisy environment or been exposed to high noise levels? Perhaps you contributedto the growth and development of our economy through industries like farming, forestry or manufacturing. Many New Zealanders who worked in such industries throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s did not have access to adequate hearing protection. As a result there are thousands of New Zealanders living with significant noise induced hearing loss. The damage caused to your hearing by noise is irreversible and permanent. For those affected this is a disability that will not go away. Unfortunately, the compensation and ongoing support has been dramati-cally reduced with the 2010 changes introduced by ACC. These changes mean that ACC no longer cover the full cost of hearing aids, hearing aid repairs, and ongoing assessments. Effectively, as those with Noise Induced Hearing Loss get older, they will need to pay more for therehabilitation they had previously trusted ACC to provide.ACC funding is now structured into funding levels, with the amount you

qualify for depending on the level of hearing loss that an independent Ear Nose and Throat specialist deter-Nose and Throat specialist deter-Nose and Throat specialist determines is caused by noise or an acci-dent. Sadly, even the highest level of funding available may fall well below the cost of the hearing aids required to meet a persons individual hearing needs. The impact of the ACC funding changes means that some people simply cannot afford to ‘top up’ the funded amount to purchase the level of technology they need.People with untreated hearing loss can experience feelings of isolation, anxiety, depression and reduced job performance. However research shows that hearing aids can helpimprove the confidence and self esteem of those who wear them, and lead to improved family relationships.Understanding the importance of hearing loss rehabilitation, Bay Audiology is committed to developing a better solution.

At Bay Audiology, regardless of what funding level a client qualifies for, there will be a hearing aid solution that is fully

covered by their ACC funding with no cost to the client.

As a direct result, Bay Audiology has been able to help even more people who would otherwise not have been able to afford hearing aids. For those with more complex listen-ing needs, or who would benefit from a greater technology level than the fully funded pair provides, this pricing

structure means that they can now afford to invest in an upgrade to a hearing aid model that gives them a more natural listening experience, and allows them to enjoy a wider variety of listening situations. Hearing aid tech-nology has improved exponentially in recent years, and amazing results can be achieved with the latest models, so this is a huge advantage for Bay Audiology clients.

Paddy will also represent New Zealand and compete at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

A successful bull rider needs to be in good shape. Alongside the physical aspects of training, teaching the mind to focus well is vital. Paddy uses gym workouts to keep fit and flexible, bareback horse-riding for timing and balance, and practises on bulls whenever possible. And all this preparation is put to the test in what is considered the most dangerous eight seconds in sport.

“Good attitude, good mind set, athletic body and a passion for the sport is important,” said Paddy.

Often when riders climb on a half tonne bovine in a narrow chute, the bull is already bucking before the gate flies open. The

Paddy said cowboys can’t make a living from rodeo in New Zealand as there aren’t enough events.

“You do need to have a job or a major sponsor.”

However, in the USA cowboys can earn big prize money. Last year’s Professional Bull Riders (PBR) champion, Silvano Alves from Brazil, won just over half a million US dollars in one season.

The New Zealand rodeo circuit runs from October to the end of April when the national finals are usually held.

Paddy will be amongst the competitors at the National Finals Rodeo in Feilding on April 5-6 where he hopes to win the finals and the title.

The event, to be held at the Manfeild arena, will include bareback, saddlebronc, bullriding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, rope and tie, and team roping events.

rider grips a flat braided rope with one hand and must only touch the bull with that hand. Riders need to be prepared for bulls to go roaring out either frontwards, backwards or sideways.

Paddy tries to keep his mind clear before the gate opens.

“Everything happens fast and thinking is too slow,” he said.

“You have to react subconsciously without thinking.”

The ability to stay mounted for the mandatory eight seconds on a bucking bull as it throws in several rears, spins and twists, increases the bull rider’s chances of taking home prize money and titles. Judges award a mark between zero to 100 with both the riders and bulls scored. This evens out the competition amongst the riders drawing the bulls, giving them an equal opportunity. Each bull has a name with some gaining a fierce reputation.

As each ride ends, Paddy considers how it went.

“If the ride went good, I’m usually so full of adrenaline and I’m happy.

“If the ride went bad, I think over what went wrong to correct it for next time.”

Thrills and spills are part of the sport. So far Paddy’s only major injury has been a concussion when he was competing in the United States last year. He spent a night in hospital and had a CAT scan.

“So I was told — don’t remember much of it,” he said.

Four weeks later he was back onboard.

She eventually bought 11 acres and then began researching which livestock would suit her block.

Alpacas won.

“Owning alpacas is a joy, they always make you smile,” said Dianne.

“They are also very quiet only making a low humming noise to communicate with each other.

“The only downside is that they are easy to become attached to so that it is very hard to sell them.”

Dianne started with just two alpacas five years ago — a pregnant female with a cria at foot.

“Since then I have grown the herd by picking up animals with better quality fibre and mating them with show winning sires.

“I just recently purchased four more, two of which are pregnant, so now have

a total of nineteen with more cria to look forward to,” she said.

Dianne’s property, located just 10 minutes from New Plymouth city, is predominantly steep terrain with a couple of flat paddocks. She said the flat paddocks are perfect for making hay.

“I grow my own hay crop each year and buy alpaca pellets and chaff as supplementary food.

“I also have several Lucerne trees which the alpacas love to nibble when my back is turned.”

As alpacas prefer to eat short grass, Dianne rotates them through her paddocks alternately with a flock of Wiltshire sheep to tidy up the pasture.

She said the hills are also ideal for alpacas.

“It gives them a natural playground to frolic up and down the hillsides which is fantastic fun for the cria.”

Around November each year before the heat of summer, Dianne employs a contractor to shear her alpacas.

She said there are three styles of shearing alpacas but she prefers to use the table method as it appears to be the least stressful for the animals.

Dianne is just starting to work with the fleece she has accumulated.

“There are many options from felting to carding, spinning and weaving,” she said.

“I have imported an electric carding machine from America to start processing the fibre.”

She also has a website www.hollyhillalpacas.co.nz which she will utilise to sell fleece.

herd with each mating.

Long term she aims to breed alpacas with finer micron, then card and sell the fibre.

“I now have animals of good quality so I will be sending their fleeces away for competitions and I am looking at showing in the near future.”

Dianne said choosing the right sires to improve the herd has been challenging but other alpaca breeders have helped her enormously.

“Alpacas are just the most adorable animals, they are very inquisitive, easy to train and the babies are so playful.”

“The fact that they do not attempt to challenge fences was a bonus because when I bought this property it was just four huge bare paddocks with rather basic fencing,” she said.

“Fundamentally it is the gentle nature of alpacas that appeals to me.”

Trough valve problems?

Sick and tired of unreliable, leaking or jamming trough valves? No end of farmers nd this frustration an ongoing hassle, stealing precious time and energy away from the jobs that really need doing around the farm.

The good news is there is a very simple solution at hand.

Hansen Products who are well known for their reliable poly pipe ttings, threaded pipe ttings and valves have taken on board these frustrations and designed an innovative range of trough valves that are proving to be very successful with farmers nationwide. Their unique and extremely reliable design goes a long way towards helping to completely eliminate several of the ongoing issues farmers have been having with other branded trough valves.

Aside from all the obvious bene ts of delivering high volume ows, built from quality materials and packaged with

multiple connection options for every install, there are a few key ingredients to these valves that set them apart from the rest.

The unique ‘Slipper Fit Piston’ design is such that the Super o Trough Valve has a very soft open/close action that virtually eliminates ‘Stuck Valve Syndrome’. Great! No more ooding around the troughs or empty troughs starving stock of their water requirements. Furthermore the soft close of the Max o Trough/Tank Valve eliminates water hammer which can put serious strain on a well worked system, as well as self cleaning the valve on closure. Add to that the super ef cient operating range of just 0.02 bar all the way up to 12 bar makes these valves usable in just about any system.

It’s no wonder Hansen states that they provide customers with ‘Best Installed Value’ since 1958.

Apiti community effort for trail bike rideUndulating terrain and farm tracks with views to the Ruahine Ranges are mapped out for the Apiti School trail bike ride on April 21.

The ride, jointly organised by the Apiti School Support Association (ASSA) members and Blair McCarroll, will cover a 35km loop track. Several farmers in the area have offered the use of their properties for the event.

Blair said farmers play a very important role in the event, providing farms to ride over and ensuring stock is shifted out of the way.

Many of the farmers also help out during the trail bike ride and lend a hand with any problems. The assistance provided by volunteers is also vitally important to organising and running the event.

Blair said there is a huge amount of work involved before and on the  day. “We have meetings to plan everything, arrange permits,

by Denise Gunn

ambulance attendance and  sponsorship.” Advertising flyers are also prepared, sent out and signs placed on the roadside.

“There are many hours put in preparing the track, putting out marker arrows and danger tape to ensure the riders have a fun, safe and enjoyable ride,” said Blair.

“We currently only have 11 families at the school so we need to ask our extended families and wider community for help on the day with marshalling, supervising, supplying food and manning the barbecue.”

The track, which includes a few challenges, is geared towards riders from intermediate level ability. There is also a well supervised track for children and all tracks

are suited to two and four-wheeled bikes. No passengers are allowed. Helmets and boots are compulsory.

A Manawatu-Orion Motorcycle Club member has been organised to act as chief marshall during the event.

Riders need to register from 8.30am and a briefing follows at 10am. The ride begins at 10.30am.

The entry fee of $30 per adult and $15 per child (12 years and under) includes lunch which will be provided between noon and 2pm.

The annual ride is a major fundraiser for Apiti School.

“One of the things we are hoping to

purchase for the school is an interactive whiteboard,” said Blair.

“The school is very grateful and dependent upon the help and support from members of the local community.

“We are also very grateful for the sponsorship we receive to assist us in the costs involved with running this and providing prizes.”

Previous Apiti School trail bike rides have drawn riders from as far as Wellington and Taumarunui.

Directions to the trail bike ride will be well signposted from Apiti. For further information phone Blair on 06 328 4722.

A trail bike ride, jointly organised by the Apiti School Support Association and Blair McCarroll, will cover 35kms of undulating terrain and farm tracks with views to the Ruahine Ranges.

Step forward to raise funds for road safety charity

The Step Forward fundraiser, organised by international road safety charity Brake, will run all this year to remember road accident victims, their families and friends.

The fundraiser will also help raise funds for support services for those families.

The Step Forward fundraiser has been organised by international road safety charity, Brake. Founded in the United Kingdom in 1995 and formed in New Zealand in 2010, Brake has two key aims: preventing road deaths and injuries, and caring for people who have been bereaved or seriously injured in a crash.

Last year, 307 people died on New Zealand roads.

Brake New Zealand spokesperson Carolyn Perry, said that’s 307 families who found out the devastating news that their loved one would not be coming home.

“Many more families, friends and communities will have been affected by someone they care about being killed or seriously injured in a crash.”

The Step Forward campaign asks people to set themselves a sporting challenge that relates to the number 307, in remembrance of those who lost their lives on New Zealand roads in 2012.

“Everyone can take part — adults and children, individuals and groups, and there are lots of ways to challenge yourself,” said Miss Perry.

Some suggestions include: — swimming 307 lengths of a swimming pool with sponsorship for each length swum — jog, or work out in the gym, for 307 minutes (five hours) with sponsorship for every minute — hold a 307 minute cricket, rugby or soccer game with sponsorship for every minute played or point scored — cycle 307km over a week or a month, with sponsorship for every kilometre.

Miss Perry said taking part in the fundraiser is easy.

“Firstly, you need to decide what challenge you’re going to set yourself,

An opportunity to remember road accident victims, their families and friends, and help to raise funds for support services for those families will run all this year.

whether to do it on your own or as a group, and when to do it.

“Once you know what you’ll be doing, contact Brake on [email protected] or 021 407 953 with all the details and your fundraising target, and we’ll send you a sponsorship form and hints and tips for organising and fundraising for your challenge.”

The funds raised from the Step Forward campaign will go towards Brake’s work supporting people affected by road accidents and to prevent deaths and injuries on roads.

comfortable for the cow. So why do you want to harden the hooves? It only makes hoof trimming a harder job.

Foot baths should only be used as a disinfectant for things like footrot and Digital Dermatitis. Many of you may not know what Digital Dermatitis is — that is why I have included this photo with this article. Digital Dermatitis is an infectious disease in the skin above the heel bulb of the claw. This is a big problem in Europe and America.

Cows over there are very lame when they have it. Digital Dermatitis has arrived in New Zealand as well. Cows don’t seem to get lame from it like they do overseas but it is very important that we treat cases here because it can turn into a major issue. When you see a case the best thing is to take a photo and email it to us, make it dry with a paper towel and spray it with tetravet. Repeat this treatment in about five days.

It is also a good idea to walk the herd through a foot bath with formalin. In this case it needs to be a bath and not a mat because the liquid needs to get up onto the skin above the claw. A mat can’t do that.

Apart from that you don’t need footbaths or hoof mats. You will have better experience if you use that money to buy a bunch of flowers for your wife!

Hoof PrintWith Fred Hoekstra

Scientific trials haven’t shown any evidence of that. There is no proof that hard hooves minimise lameness. If you believe that lameness is caused by physical forces then you should be very surprised. Consider this, our soldiers in the army wear proper army boots rather than sneakers. The army boots can handle the rough landscape much better than sneakers. If you harden up the hooves then they accordingly should be a lot more hard wearing, and therefore be able to cope with their physical environment better resulting in less ‘stone bruising’ and white line disease. But that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. How can you explain that?

If you have been reading my articles then you probably know what I am going to say. Our experience is that we can go to a farm where the hooves are really soft and yet there is very little haemorrhage in the hooves. Then we go to farms where the hooves are very hard to the point where it almost feels like we are cutting concrete and yet the hooves display much more haemorrhaging.

How can you explain that from a physical damage point of view? The reason is that it is not physical force that causes the problem. The problem comes from the inside out rather than from the outside in. The live tissue (corium or quick) is unhealthy and this is where the haemorrhage and defects develop from.

So no matter how hard you make the hooves if the corium is unhealthy you will still end up with lame cows. I would argue that if you have lame cows you are better off to have your cows on soft feet instead. Soft hooves don’t penetrate into the wound the same and therefore are more

Are foot baths bene cial? How many of you use hoof mats or foot baths? What are you trying to achieve with it and how helpful do you find them? You may say that you are trying to harden the feet and find that it is very effective, and I would have to agree that footbaths can make cows feet very hard — especially when you use formalin. But does it minimise lameness?

Soil Matters — with Peter Burton

What we can learn from the clover root weevil

Healthy clover in a permanent clover rye grass pasture is capable of fixing more than enough nitrogen for the production of 18,000+ kilogrammes of dry matter annually.

In the short term applying fertiliser nitrogen seems the only logical solution to the damage caused by the root weevil. A severe root weevil infestation may effectively reduce the amount of clover fixed nitrogen by as much as 90%.

This suggests that a little in excess of 200kgN/ha should be applied to maintain normal pasture production.

Urea, the cheapest form of fertiliser nitrogen, is currently $745.00+GST/tonne ex store, which means the cost of 200kgN is $323.91+GST. That’s a cost of $48,586.95 for 150ha without the cost of cartage and spreading, roughly the price of a new ute.

A keen trout fishing neighbour remarked recently that if only he could interrogate the trout he catches he could catch a lot more.

Although it would be useful to communicate directly with clover root weevil it’s not necessary in order to know why they are currently attacking clover in dairy pasture.

It’s not all clover that is dealt to and it’s not just clover in dairy pasture that is affected. Weevil’s don’t know what type of animal is grazing the pasture, so it’s not a problem specific to pastures grazed by dairy animals.

The factor common to most intensive dairy farming is the use of nitrogen fertiliser. In our view regular fertiliser nitrogen always precedes damage by pests.

In pasture the role of pests is to ensure that weakened plants are not able to grow to maturity and produce seed, — only the strongest survive which is why not all clover is damaged.

Clovers flourish in pastures as plant available nitrogen declines, hence the application of fertiliser nitrogen reduces the reason for their existence. The plants that do survive struggle to compete with grass for moisture, nutrient, and sunlight, and therefore become the target of both flea and weevil.

Conversely reducing the amount of nitrogen applied and lifting plant available calcium will bring about resurgence in the amount of clover in the sward. Clovers contain up to four times the calcium of rye grasses, just one of the reasons that

animals grazing clover dominant pasture produce more and grow more rapidly than stock grazing other species.

Not only is extra calcium beneficial it is important that it becomes available to plants as they require it. This work is largely done by fungi, bacteria and worms, and the beneficial ones thrive in a calcium rich environment.

DoloZest, made by ESI using Golden bay Dolomite is available throughout the South Island. It contains both calcium and magnesium along with a wide range of selected soil friendly fungi and bacteria and has been applied over the last eight years to intensive dairy and grazing properties throughout both islands.

Measures from six properties from September to December in 2006 using DoloZest based nutrient programmes showed they contained twice as much clover compared to pasture from six properties using conventional nitrogen driven systems.

The percentage of the clover in the pasture from the conventional properties averaged 13% over the four months with 27% clover content in the pastures using DoloZest based programmes.

Not only is the clover content higher in properties applying DoloZest, but damage by clover flea and weevil is limited to such an extent that less than 20kgN/ha is required to grow in excess of 18 tonne of pasture in a twelve month period.

Preventing facial eczemaFacial Eczema is a

disease caused by fungal spores from the fungus Pithomyces chartarum that produce a toxin which when ingested by cattle can lead to the damage of liver and bile ducts. This fungus (FE) can cause lower milk production and occasionally death from liver damage. The damaged liver is unable to rid the body of wastes and the breakdown product of chlorophyll build up in the body causing sensitivity to sunlight, which can then lead to in ammation of the skin.

The rst signs of FE usually show up as a drop in milk production soon after the intake of toxic spores (sub clinical FE), other signs may include cows being restless at milking time, seeking shade and licking their udder. As facial eczema becomes more obvious, another drop in milk production may be seen and exposed un-pigmented skin may thicken and peel, especially prone are the white areas on cattle, teats and udder and inside the hind legs may also be affected. It is important to remember that not all animals may show physical signs of clinical facial eczema, but some may have had liver damage occur (sub clinical FE).

Facial Eczema spores are produced when minimum grass temperature are above 12° for two or three nights and humidity is usually high, this can occur in the months (January to May). The fungus grows on soft matter in the base

of the pasture, so hard grazing during this period of increased spore activity may also increase the risk of spore uptake by cattle.

Prevention should start early with Zinc treatment, ideally two to three weeks before the spore

growth danger period, for the most bene cial protection.

One product that is suitable is Zinc 50 from Vetpak, it is a free owing Zinc Oxide 50% liquid suspension to aid in the treatment and prevention of Facial Eczema in cattle and sheep, and is ideally suited for drenching or adding through an inline water medication system. Zinc 50 is suitable for long term daily dosing until the pasture to be grazed is safe from fungal spores.

Zinc 50 has a nil milk withhold period and is suitable for dairy cows. Zinc 50 is available from your local veterinarian.

Another product in the Vetpak stable is Green Apple Flavouring, which is a ready to use liquid avour additive designed to mask unpleasant tastes such as Zinc Oxide.

Green Apple can be added to drinking water, dry feed or mineral drenches such as Zinc Oxide or Magnesium Sulphate/Chlorides and this makes it an ideal partner when using Zinc products to treat Facial Eczema.

Green Apple Flavouring and Zinc 50 are both available from your local veterinarian.

Bridging the gap to sustainable livingby Denise Gunn

A new Taranaki-based sustainable property business, Green Bridge, is assisting clients to achieve their renovation, building and landscaping goals.

Husband and wife team Daniel Woolley and Bena Denton established Green Bridge to work with clients to incorporate sustainable living practises into their urban or lifestyle properties.

Green Bridge offers anything from a few hours advice, right through to designing, specifying and overseeing the various aspects of a client’s renovation, new build, productive garden and landscaping projects.

“In a field that encompasses many facets and which is becoming increasingly complex, we guide our clients through assessing their unique building, water, energy and landscape requirements,” said Daniel.

“We then explain the options available, design a solution, and oversee the various stages/aspects of your project including bringing in the external experts required to help people live more sustainably.”

Backed with extensive qualifications, backgrounds and experience in design, interior architecture and permaculture, the couple are passionate about linking people with the resources required to turn their sustainable property dreams into reality.

Daniel has a degree in industrial design and 15 years of project management experience, including running his own

business in Wellington. Bena’s degree in interior architecture included several papers in environment architecture and she has also completed a course in organic horticulture. Both have professional experience working in related fields overseas and have also gained permaculture design certificates.

And the couple have first-hand knowledge of the challenges involved in developing a sustainable lifestyle property.

Daniel Woolley and Bena Denton of Green Bridge

Over the past two years they’ve relocated and rebuilt a 1950s home on their own four hectares.

“Basically we provide a single point of contact from which a client can access the resources necessary to design and implement the process of bringing the sustainable dreams for their property to life.”

Green Bridge offers a free one-hour initial consultation to discuss your project. Visit www.greenbridge.co.nz or phone Daniel on 06 751 5556 for further details.

To build or renovateBuilding for a sustainable future

Today we have almost come full circle, as environmental consciousness and a financial savvy lead new home builders to consider a wealth of new options when building — options which can literally take a new home ‘off the grid’ with some planning and foresight.

And while for some the extreme option of severing the ties with municipal infrastructure and the power companies seems a little excessive, a gradual or phased implementation of new ‘green’ technologies can surely save money — a point which everyone can get behind.

When it comes to saving power, the seeds of sustainability are planted early. The alignment of your new home to the sun plays a key role, and architects can maximise the heating power of natural sunlight with light wells, heat-absorbent materials and ‘smart’ glass in their designs. Add in solar panels to harness the free ‘nuclear power’ of our closest star and your hot water bill (which can be up to a third of your total power bill) can be drastically reduced.

Photovoltaic solar panels have also come a long way in recent years, and coupled with new battery technology they can run everything from fridges to computers and televisions.

Heating the home is another huge concern, and while energy efficient heat pumps are one modern answer, consider advancements in that old favourite, the fireplace. New pellet fires and more efficient ‘wetback’ water heaters add

a new dimension to this time-honoured technology, and of course a fireplace needs no electricity at all!

With a long hot summer upon us, it’s good to consider water as another key feature of the sustainable home. Not just water coming in — for which new gutter filtration systems, purifiers and tank systems are a popular answer — but also minimising water usage overall with lower-flow bathroom and kitchen fittings. Wastewater can be managed more efficiently too with new, naturally actuated and ‘wormolator’ based treatment systems which can also process grey water.

When the first European homes were built by colonial settlers over 150 years ago, the main concern of their builders was self sufficiency. Without a power grid or reticulated water it was of utmost importance that each home could stand alone, supplying more than just shelter.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes

that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure™ for three years. He says this allows them to have an odour-free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure™ works, keeping their tank in very good condition.

Separating the wood from the trees

Peter Clark writes...

New tools help manage rivers in forests

Staying connected with science developments often provides opportunities to innovate in ways not first envisaged by those who initiated the science. In one recent example, work undertaken by NIWA to develop a Rivers Environments Classification (REC) has been applied by PF Olsen to help manage rivers and streams in the forests it manages.

The REC is a spatial dataset that classifies all river segments according to a variety of factors that influence their primary physical state.

With over 2,685 km of streams to look after in all the forests PF Olsen manages and 1,058 km within our Forest Stewardship Council Certified estate, Kit Richards, PF Olsen’s Environment Manager could see an immediate potential for application of this dataset.

“One of our challenges is that we constantly acquire, at short notice, new forests to manage on behalf of clients” says Kit. “We may know nothing much about the streams within the area

yet our harvest planners may have to prepare initial estimates and concepts for planning and budgeting. By linking our Riparian Management Rules to the stream classes, through our Forest Information and Planning System (FIPS), we can immediately understand some of the likely constraints. We can then generate the rules that contractors will have to follow for the stream categories in an area they are working in and present these on harvest plan maps and prescriptions.”

As well as providing a framework for PF Olsen’s riparian rules, the system also enables analysis of the variations between the types of

river systems we have to manage in different regions. In more recent times the Department of Conservation has developed a spatial model that relates data from the national freshwater fisheries database to the REC system to create the Fresh Water Environments NZ (FWENZ) system. This can provide predictions of probability of occurrence of native fish including threatened species within stream sections.

This forest stream has harvested plantation forest just metres from its banks

This is sample of a chart from the Rivers Environments’ Classification database

This information too is very helpful to PF Olsen managers when planning operations.
