The gifts of art and music Greetings from Lutheran High School! Another year just flew by and it was another that was packed full of student activities and

achievements. Our Class of 2017 is on their way into their next phase in life after securing over $1,200,350 in scholarships and grants for their future educational paths.

Our spring sports season is coming to a close as track records were set and we had a freshman, Drake Wilcox, take second place overall at the WIAA State Golf meet this week. We are blessed!

So we ramp up for next year and the near future. LHS has talked for years about the idea of expanding the campus to include a Worship & Fine Arts Center. Architectural renderings have been drawn and fundraising plans have been explored. We are yet to take the next steps but I thought it would be nice to highlight what Sheboygan Lutheran has to offer and what we have done in our Arts programs. So with the help of the Journalism class, we have laid out some of this year’s student work. For a school of this size, it’s amazing how many students are involved in so many areas. It’s what makes the educational experience at LHS so great!

Please consider contributions to Lutheran High that could help to fund the needs, small and large, of the Art, Drama, or Music Departments.

On another note, I’d like to highlight some faculty news. We celebrated Years of Service in the Ministry awards at the May Commencement, honoring Ken Witte with 40 years of teaching, Julie Reseburg with 35 years of teaching (all at LHS), and Jenna Roeske with 5 years of teaching at LHS. Congratulations and thank you to these awesome faculty members.

Jenna has also accepted a call to become the Principal at Trinity Lutheran School here in Sheboygan and we wish her well. She’ll do a great job preparing children at Trinity for their high school years here at LHS! To replace Jenna in the English department, we have called on Ryan Adameak to return to LHS and he has accepted.

So we look forward to another spectacular year of Preparing Christian Leaders - One Student at a Time. In the mean time, have a great summer!

In His service, Paul W. Gnan, Executive Director

Recognizing faculty for their years of service, by Paul Gnan at the 2017 commencement service; Ken Witte, Jenna Roeske, and Julie Reseburg.

VISUAL ARTSINTRODUCTION TO ART: This introductory course focuses on

the basic foundation of art looking at the elements of design. Projects are based around these elements through the study of nature while learning techniques using drawing media, painting media, printmaking, and clay. This class also covers figure and portrait drawing. There is a concentration on drawing to improve skills as well as confidence in this area. The curriculum looks into the past for inspiration in media and content, and to develop an understanding and appreciation for the history of art. The course is a prerequisite to all other art classes.Senior Alex Phillips poses with his self-portrait.

Alex created this portrait in his favorite class, Introduction to Art. Alex says, “I love creating

fun art with good friends and an awesome teacher.” He often finds inspiration from

Eugene Delacroix, his favorite artist.

The charcoal drawing above was created by junior Hannah Adams. She made this in 2-D Art,

her favorite art class at Lutheran High. Her favorite media has been watercolor for

landscapes. She said, “It was awesome to work with proper watercolors and learn different

techniques. I painted a mountain that I remember seeing while on the choir tour.”

This course develops the use of the elements of design through the exploration of 2-D media. A variety of media will be used including pencil, ink, charcoal, scratchboard, pastel, acrylic, and watercolor. Overviews of techniques and demonstrations are given and practiced for each medium throughout the course of the semester. A variety of subject matter is assigned, including but not limited to, landscapes, still-life, portraits, animals, and the figure. The curriculum looks to the past for inspiration and ideas in use of media and content, and to help us develop an appreciation for 2-dimensional works.

VISUAL ARTSThis course’s focus is on the application of design elements and principles to the element of form. Sculpture and ceramic media will be explored through a variety of media and subject matter. Media will include: clay, plaster, wire, cardboard, balsa foam, paper mache, etc. (as time permits). Some themes explored, but not limited to, are pottery as functional or decorative, portraits, architecture, animals, and masks. Thumbnail sketches are required for each assigned project. The curriculum looks to the past for inspiration and ideas in use of media and content, and to help increase an understanding and appreciation for the development of 3-Dimensional works.

Junior McKenna Kolb created this punk-rock bobble head in 3-D Art. McKenna said, “The art classes allow you to express yourself while being taught about the different styles and materials

that are used in the art world.” Her favorite project was an animal mount made from

newspaper, tape, and paper mache.

The weaving above was made by senior, Sam Leibham. Sam’s favorite class that he has taken is Advanced Art

because he gets to be creative and come up with his own ideas. Sam’s inspiration in art comes from Michelangelo.

His favorite art piece he has created is his wood-stained board. Sam’s artwork reflects his Christian

beliefs and values.

The dye above was created by sophomore, Andrew Mueller. His favorite class has been 3-D due to the use of the potter’s wheel. He enjoyed being able to throw clay on the wheel. His favorite project was his coil pot

because he was able to use his creativity.

This course will examine a variety of media and techniques within the textile area of art. Paper making and decoration; fabric dying, decoration, and resists; basket making; and weaving will be explored with the principles and elements of design in mind. Both realistic and abstract styles will be experienced in content-related media. We will look to the past for inspiration and ideas in use of media and content, and to help us develop an understanding of the development of the art of textiles and fibers.

VISUAL ARTSADVANCED ART:

The Advanced Art Course is designed to be more student-directed. Students have a choice in what media they want to work with coinciding with the direction they take with an assigned theme. Instruction and sketches are completed at the beginning of each unit and the following day a project proposal must be filled out and approved by the instructor. Some themes explored throughout the semester include: interiors, religion, storytelling, music, and portraits. A wide variety of media is available for each student for each project. Design elements and principles are emphasized in each assignment. Group and self-critiques are performed to help each student improve his or her skills and develop an appreciation for his or her personal art as well as the artwork of their classmates.

This piece was created by senior Peter Rindt. It is a wire frame

wrapped in burlap strips. “It has an essence of a working and rough

man,” Peter explained.

Senior TJ Johnson created this pair of custom Vans with classmate, senior Sam Leibham. This pair of shoes was created with the theme of “Local Flavor”. TJ’s favorite art class has been 3-D, especially throwing clay on the wheel.

The Advanced Art piece below entitled, “Hidden Feelings,” was created using oil

pastels by senior Lorrain Hahn. Advanced Art has been her favorite art class because of the

variety of different media she was able to use. “I like that we are able to put our art in

shows for everyone to see,” Lorrain said. The artist who inspires her most is Van Gogh

because of his use of color and abstraction.

FORENSICS

Sheboygan Lutheran High School’s 2017 yearbook staff received the Jostens National Yearbook Program of Excellence Award for the fifth year in a row. LHS is one of twelve

schools in the nation to receive this award five years in a row. The awards criteria is defined as: creating an inclusive yearbook, generating school engagement, and

successfully managing the yearbook creation process. Jostens Yearbook Company publishes 75 percent of all yearbooks produced in the USA.

Senior Yearbook Editor, Erin Muth, is a national finalist for the Jostens Yearbook Design Scholarship competition. She has been involved on the yearbook staff for all four years of high school, not only as a designer but also as head editor and other leadership positions. Erin has compiled a portfolio of layouts and designs for almost every section of the yearbook.

Throughout the year, the Forensics team went to multiple competitions and several students qualified for the State competition. Even though the Forensics team had fewer participants than in years past, all tried their hardest and did well. Seniors Lisa Beine, Erin Koenig, and Alese Steinhardt, along with junior Hannah Adams (pictured) qualified for the State Meet on April 22. Lisa performed in Farrago, Erin and Alese both performed Prose, and Hannah interpreted Poetry. Both Erin and Hannah received a gold medal along with “Critic’s Choice”, and Lisa and Alese achieved Bronze.

JOURNALISM & YEARBOOK

Journalism is an upper level English class that encompasses writing, photography, and editing. Most students also engage in the production of the yearbook. Students, pictured, helped to produce this newsletter by interviewing teachers, other students, taking photos, and submitting the articles.

DANCE

Varsity Dance Team Competition

The Lutheran High dance team holds a dance clinic every winter season for young dancers. This year the little girls performed a jazz routine with the high school dancers as the half-time show at the girls varsity basketball game. The girls listened so well this year. They always impress the high school dancers with how fast they can learn the routine. They all have fun and many girls have decided to come back for next year’s clinic. Lutheran High also holds a dance camp during the summer Crusader Camps in July.

The 2017 Dance Team attended the All-Star dance competition in Green Bay at the Resch Center. With months of hard training, the Varsity Dance team prepared a two-minute pom routine with every move perfected. With Coach Megan Timm’s choreography and Director Jenna Roeske’s critiques, the dancers prepared for the competition. With the money

made from a summer fundraiser, the girls were able to purchase gold and black glittery dance outfits. The team placed first in Division 5 with 50 points overall. It was an

amazing opportunity for the girls and they had a great time.

WHAT IS IT? Every year LHS has a week long class between semesters called Winterim. This

year a new class, Wish. Say. Do. was added to the selection. It focused on the five R’s: Respect + Recognize + Reward + Reinforce = Results. The class focused on “student ownership” of their school.

The idea for this class came from the Josten’s Renaissance after yearbook students attended a regional convention. This is a way for the students to make a difference in the school and its atmosphere. Student ownership means better success rates, increased school spirit, and knowing that all students matter.

LHS Students felt they needed a sense of ownership in the school. Since this Winterim class, baby steps have been taken to make changes. One of the first things approved was a birthday board. Another thing approved was a Bible Verse wall. A Senior Salute Wall was also completed and displayed at Honors Night and Commencement.

Painting parking spots is another way for students to make their “mark” on the school, and to show their creativity. The design can be as simple or complex as they want it to be. It represents them and what they want to display. Its their spot to park and be proud of.

Given the chance, the students can make big changes. Thus the Executive Board and Mr. Gnan came to the conclusion that 10 spots in rows 2, 3 and 4 are up for purchase. This will let students claim a spot as theirs. They will be able to paint it with any design approved by administration. The spots will be available from August 15 to July 31, 2018. Five spots are still available for purchase. If you would like to purchase a parking spot for a special student, please contact the school office at (920) 452-3323.

Above: This is the Bible Verse Wall that was created by the students during Winterim in the Wish. Say. Do. class. Eventually, students can add on their favorite

verse to the display.

The Music Department’s core is the Symphonic Band and Konzertchor. The Symphonic Band is the instrumental performing ensemble that is composed of strings, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments that lift up melodious praise to the Lord. Playing techniques, music reading skills, and aural and written theory are all emphasized and taught in preparation of music to be performed. Konzertchor is the choral performing ensemble composed of beautiful voices all raising a joyful sound to God. The study of proper vocal techniques, music theory, sight-singing, and performance techniques are emphasized through a variety of musical literature. Both groups perform several concerts throughout the year and appear at several Lutheran Churches throughout the year to participate in Sunday services.

The 2015 Auction Fund-A-Cause helped the Music Department purchase new concert attire for the entire band and choir: coat, vest and pants for the boys and long black dresses for the girls. Joshua Prichard and Britta Solle model the new attire.

The Symphonic Band accompanies the Sunday service at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheboygan.

In "Hands Across the Sea," the lady of the house, Lydia Zimmerman, unknowingly throws a party for two perfect strangers, Mr. & Mrs. Wadhurst. Emily Schuh played Mrs. Wadhurst and Adam Hollister was the esteemed guest, Major Godling (Bogey).

Sophomore Isaac Perkins demonstrates his crazy

sense of humor as Mr. Woodknocer in "Hotel

Frankenstein."

Dr. Frankenstein, played by senior Jacob Glewen, describes his sinister plot in "Hotel Frankenstein" to lure unsuspecting guests to his castle turned hotel and then harvest their brains for the monster he is building.

Melody Huebschman played Anna, a Christian English school teacher who is very independent and set on her beliefs and morals, and will not settle for anything less. She has been hired by the King of Siam to teach his children. He wants his country to be civilized. About her acting, Melody said, “It takes me awhile to get into the character. I put some classical music on and just read the lines over and over to get them down.”

Dacota Anton portrays the Buddhist King of Siam. Left, Dacota sings the song, “The Puzzlement”.

Pictured right: Beth Cassity plays Tuptim. “Going into this musical, I never would’ve dreamed of having this ‘supporting role’ opportunity,” she explained. “Earning my spot was a

challenge, but a challenge I loved having. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of individuals to guide me in this experience.”

Emily Schuh, pictured above, gets into character as evil Simon of Legree. “I had to change my personality drastically to bring out an evil side in my mind. I am also so tiny, so it was hard to make people afraid of me. I had to act like I was much bigger than I really am,” Emily explained.

DRAMA SPRING MUSICAL

Under the direction of Laurie Kretschmar Dillman, the cast and crew included 26 student actors, 11 stage and technical helpers, and 16 SALSA students who played the King’s children. The show was seen by over 1150 people including the Sr. Citizen matinee, SALSA matinee, and public performances.
