Commodore’s Comments

F ear of the corona virus seems to be sub-siding for many. The medical community

and the public in general are learning more about the virus through research and personal experience. Incredibly, scientists have creat-ed, produced, distributed, and are starting to administer vaccines in record time. The vac-cines produced by an increasing number of companies hold great promise for the future. At the same time, nearly all of us are more aware of an increasing number of friends and relatives testing positive for the virus yet sur-viving it. Many even reflect on how mild their symptoms were.

It is understandable that everyone has a different opinion and reac-tion to the corona virus. The virus seems to affect everyone different-ly. Your age or your occupation has a huge influence on your opinion. Recovering from the virus with mild symptoms or getting vaccinated will certainly allow you to feel much more confident. Another huge influence will be how the virus has touched you or those close to you. With the virus touching everyone so personally and differently, the question becomes how to possibly make reasonable decisions that suit everyone. There are far too many sports analogies about letting up too soon, squandering a big lead, not playing through the entire game, letting your guard down too soon, and knowing how to finish. Our club closed twice over the last year and we certainly don’t want to close again. While too many members have tested positive, I am not aware of anyone tracing their infection back to the club. That is a good rec-ord to keep. I urge everyone to continue safe practices, wear a mask, safe distance, and wash hands. Please use the club often, and continue to help keep ourselves and our staff safe. I personally intend to err on the side of safety. My opinion is this continues to be a very dangerous time period and letting our guard down too soon could have serious consequences. As the club struggles to find a way to open up with social events, please practice safe dis-tance and act responsibly. Monthly Board Meetings continue to be held by Zoom, and this may continue for another month or two. Hold-ing a membership meeting in person is also a month by month deci-sion. I am not planning a February meeting, but would hope March is possible. The Board of Directors continues to be as transparent as possible by publishing Board Meeting minutes and house report financials. As I write these comments I am listening to a news broadcast declaring the UK virus variant is reportedly faster spreading and deadlier than originally thought.
