McKay’s Flames went 13-2 at home in 2007-08, before set-ting a program record with a 15-3 mark at the Vines Center in 2008-09. The Flames are off to a 4-2 home start this year.

100 Club The Nov. 11 game between Liberty and Cairn was Ritchie McKay’s 100th game as head coach at Liberty. At 53-47, he posted the second-best record of any Liberty head men’s basketball coach through his first 100 games. Jeff Meyer went 65-35 through 100 games, with his 100th contest being a loss at Tampa, Jan. 5, 1985. McKay is the sixth Liberty men’s basketball head coach to lead the Flames for at least 100 contests, and the first whose 100th game has been played in Lynchburg.

League Honorees After leading the Flames to a top five seed in the 2016 Big South Championship, Lib-erty men’s basketball head coach Ritchie McKay was voted the Big South Coach of the Year by the league’s head coaches and media panel. Along with McKay, guard John Dawson earned all-conference honorable mention. Guard/forward Ryan Kemrite received a spot on the conference’s all-academic team.

Big Improvement Liberty went 10-8 in conference play last year, its first season with double-digit confer-ence wins since going 13-5 in league play in 2010-11. Additionally, the Flames improved by eight games from their 2014-15 conference record of 2-16. That win improvement was the largest from one year to the next in program history.

Longest Win Streaks in Program History Liberty went on a seven-game winning streak from Jan. 19 through Feb. 13, 2016. The streak is tied for the fourth longest overall winning streak in program history. Five out of the seven wins were decided by four points or fewer. The Flames also won seven con-ference games in a row from Jan. 29 through Feb. 18, 2004.

Clutch Performances The Flames showed toughness down the stretch in games last season, going 6-2 in games decided by three or fewer points and 9-4 when the margin was five points or fewer. Liberty’s six wins when decided within three points tied a program single-season re-cord. The Flames also won six games decided by three or fewer points in 1982-83, 1984-85, 1985-86 and 2002-03.

Three Goggles In Liberty’s 86-81 win versus Gardner-Webb (Feb. 27, 2016), the Flames knocked down 17 three-pointers, tying the highest single-game total in program history. McKay’s 2007-08 Liberty squad also holds the record, draining 17 treys versus VMI on March 4, 2008, defeating the Keydets in the 2008 Big South Championship quarterfinals, 103-88. The Flames also knocked down 16 trifectas on Feb. 13, 2016 at Longwood, which is currenty third on the all-time list. McKay-coached teams are represented in seven of the top eight spots on the listing (includes ties). The Flames’ top three seasons for three-point field goals made and attempted have all come under Head Coach Ritchie McKay. The 2007-08 team set the record with 288 made three-pointers, while the following season saw the Flames break that mark by hitting 321 triples. Last year’s squad hit the third-most treys in program history, 283.

Spreading the Wealth The 2015-16 season was just the second time in program history that four Flames hit 40 or more three-pointers in the same season, with the only previous time coming in Ritchie McKay’s first year as Liberty’s head coach, 2007-08. That season, Anthony Smith had a team-high 84 threes, followed by Kyle Ohman (63), Jeremy Anderson (46) and B.J. Jenkins (42). Last year, A.C. Reid led with 60 triples, followed by Ryan Kemrite (57), Lovell Cabbil (52) and John Dawson (42).

Preseason Postings Liberty was predicted to finish second in the 2016-17 Big South Preseason Men’s Basketball poll. Last year, the Flames placed fifth in the conference after being picked 11th in the 2015-16 preseason poll. Redshirt senior John Dawson was voted to the Big South Men’s Basketball Pre-season All-Conference first team, after leading the Flames with 13.4 points per game in his first season since transferring from Marquette. Dawson was an honorable mention all-conference player last year.

Big Shots The Flames made a game-winning shot during the final 15 seconds of a game on three occasions last year. On Nov. 13, Lovell Cabbil sank two free throws to break a 62-62 tie with two seconds left, giving Liberty a 64-62 win over Convenant. John Dawson hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 13 seconds left at Coastal Carolina on Jan. 6, and the Chanticleers’ late field goal attempt missed as Liberty prevailed, 62-61. Dawson drove the lane for a game-winning layup, giving Liberty a 69-67 win over High Point on Jan. 23 at the Vines Center.

Back-to-Back Freshmen of the Week Current Flames Caleb Homesley and Lovell Cabbil were named Big South Freshman of the Week in back-to-back weeks, Feb. 1 and Feb. 8, 2016. They became the second set of Liberty teammates to be voted Freshman of the Week in back-to-back weeks, and first since Jesse Sanders (Dec. 1, 2008) and Seth Curry (Dec. 8, 2008) during Ritchie McKay’s second season at Liberty. Five times in program history, there have been two different Flames named Big South Freshman of the Week.

He spent the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons as men’s basketball technology assistant. Sfera served as technology and scouting assistant in 2014-15 before being promoted to the position as UVa’s director of scouting/recruiting for the 2015-16 campaign. Prior to that, Sfera served as an assistant coach at Northern Arizona during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. He also has experience at Memphis and NAIA power Biola.

Family Ties Family connections run deep at Liberty for this year’s men’s basketball roster. Redshirt sophomore Ezra Talbert and freshman Josiah Talbert are the first pair of brothers to compete for the Flames in men’s basketball at the same time since Jesse Sanders and John Caleb Sanders during the 2011-12 season. The Sanders brothers fin-ished were the third-highest scoring brother duo in Big South history, combining to score 2,619 career points. Sophomore Zach Farquhar’s father, Steve Farquhar, was a four-year letterwinner in men’s basketball from 1986-90, which includes Liberty’s first season as a Division I team. Brock Gardner joins the Flames after being a three-star recruit from Chandler, Ariz. Gardner’s older sister, Macey, is currently in her first season as an assistant coach on the Liberty volleyball coaching staff. Macey Gardner was a three-time Pac-12 All-Conference selection while playing at Arizona State, finishing as the Sun Devils’ all-time leader in kills.

Liberty Inks 3 for 2017-18 Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of five players to attend Liberty during the 2017-18 academic year – Jay Barber, Elijah Cuffee and Keegan McDowell. Barber, a 6-4 sharp-shooting guard from Liberty Christian Academy has hit 156 three-pointers during his last two seasons. As a junior, he earned Conference 23 All-Conference first-team honors, leading the team with 14.0 points per game. During his sophomore year, Barber led the Commonwealth of Virginia and ranked among the nation’s leaders in threes. Cuffee, a 6-4 wing player, will play his senior year of high school at LCA, joining fellow Liberty signee Jay Barber. He played his first three years at Poca High School in Poca, W.Va., earning three all-state honors. While at Poca, he scored 1,306 points and hlped the team to a state title as a sopmohore. Cuffee, a three-time Cardinal Conference first-team honoree, led the league in scoring last year, averaging 19.8 points per game. McDowell, a 6-5 guard, comes to Liberty from Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a junior, McDowell earned All-GCL South second team honors, averaging 9.3 points per game while shotting 40 percent from three-point range. Last year, Moeller went 24-5, while McDowell was named to the Cincinnati Enquirer Division I second team. He is from an athletic family, as as four siblings either currently dompete or have competed at Divi-sion I schools. His older sister, Delaney, is a member of Liberty’s track & field team.

World Travelers For the first time in five years the Flames embarked on an offseason journey outside America’s borders. Coach McKay’s squad spent five days in Costa Rica, playing three exhibition games against international competition and taking part in community service.
