GATHERING IDEAS 2009 09-GI-004

Project Name: Library 2.0 Online Class for WA State Librarians and Library Support Personnel

Library, group, or person submitting proposal Mary Letterman __________

Library Name, if different

1. Briefly describe your idea for the use of LSTA funding (limit your response to approximately ½page):

I would like to see Washington State librarians become more knowledgeable in use of online tools. Afree, online class exploring various tools could be created. A model for such a class could be theclass designed by the California School Library Association,http://schoollibrarylearning2.blogspot.com/ , which itself is based on other similar classes. Thebenefits to such an online class in Washington State are increased awareness of new web-basedtools and a collaborative effort by different types of librarians. Another example of a recentlydeveloped class has been produced in Minnesota and hopes to improve library services by“promoting and facilitating cooperation among the academic, public, school library media centers, &special libraries within their regions”. That website is http://23thingsonastick.blogspot.com/2007/10/welcome-to-23-things-on-stick.html

2. Briefly describe why funding of this idea is important to the Washington library community (limityour response to approximately ½ page):

Washington State, home of Microsoft, had been thought of as being at the forefront of technology;however, a word of mouth survey indicates that many librarians are not conversant with the web2.0tools. In fact, they are intimidated by these tools. If we don’t know these tools, we cannot conveythem to our patrons. The patrons will then go to alternate sources (probably Google) for theirinformation needs. My last trip to the public library, fully half of the patrons were there to surf the web.Let’s give our patrons what they want and need in terms of quality information.

3. Briefly describe the outcome that is expected should the idea be funded. In other words, how willwe know if the project has been successful and has achieved its goals? (limit your response toapproximately ½ page):

About 60 librarians completed and 130 are participating in the California School Library Associationclass. It is important to note that this statistic only considers the librarians living in California.Librarians for around the United States, and even the World, have also completed the class and theyare not considered as part of the total. I was one of last summer’s participants and was very glad forthe knowledge; however, I wish I had the collaboration and networking that would have come from amore localized class.

A quick look at the Minnesota site indicates that they also have a robust participation.

So, how would you measure success? By the number of participants and the percentage of thosethat complete the class. Much of the participation rate depends on how well advertised the class is.I’m picturing an invitation going out to all of the various library groups.

Another way to measure is to keep track of the ripples the class creates. The idea is that schoollibrarians can then go back to teach these skills to students and that public librarians would go back toshare their knowledge with their patrons. Some groups will want to duplicate the class and others useonly the most appropriate parts for them.
