History Around 1997, Katholieke University of Leuven,

Belgium started taking subscriptions to electronic journals.  Each  publisher had his own interface for accessing their journals, and this did not look very interesting for the end-user.

Therefore LIBIS, the library information group of Leuven, developed a software in which all available journals (at that time, there were not yet Open Access journals) were introduced, and an automatic link was placed to the website of each journal.

Page 4: LIBRISOURCE:

The software consisted mainly of three ingredients, all based on commercial software:

ORACLE◦ The database that contained all the information

COLDFUSION◦ The software for building the website that made the link

to this database and allowed the end users to perform searches and retrieve.

VISUAL BASIC 6   - The software that allowed the librarians to maintain the database (adding new records, editing old records, deleting records...) was written in VISUAL BASIC 6 (from Microsoft).

History

Page 5: LIBRISOURCE:

The LIBIS group put some effort in developing the software.  So, they recovered some income by selling the product to associated institutes.  Therefore the software was  developed in a complex way where the same database is shared by various institutions.   The end users of each institute, however, are shown only the records to which they have a subscription.

In the framework of the VLIR project for SLU and BSU, There is a need to offer a similar  tool for giving access to the many freely available Open Access Journals that in the meantime had been appearing.

Repacking to Open Source

Software products has been rewritten to free "Open Source“ software, namely:

- MySQL database  - PHP for the end-user package.

The package for the librarians was also rewritten to the new version of Visual Basic that Microsoft was making available as freeware.

History

Page 7: LIBRISOURCE:

The rewriting of all this software was done mainly by Professor Raf Dekeyser, with a lot of initial help from the LIBIS group member ( Anita Ruymen ).

New exceptions of the software:   - Apart from journals and website, a special category of E-Books was introduced.     These did not yet exist in 1997.   - The possibility that several institutes share the same software is still present, but all records marked as "Open Access" are made visible to all end users.

History

Page 8: LIBRISOURCE:

LIBIS information group is still the copyright holder of the software, but they have made it available for worldwide sharing through a Creative-Commons license, which is indicated at the bottom of the end-user web page.  The software is no longer used at the Katholeike Universiteit Leuven because they are now using ExLibris, which is the provider of their Library Management System.

SLU-Baguio and Benguet State University is the only Philippine university that used the Librisource.
