About Our ToolsManyofourhandplanesderivefromdiscontinuedStanleydesigns,refinedtomeethigher

qualitystandards.Ourbladesarethickerandharder,ourcastingsarethicker,flatter,andmoreresilient,ourpartsfitmoreprecisely,oursurfacesgroundmoreaccurately,andweputcarefulhandworkintothefinalfitandfinishofeachtool.

Wemakeourtoolsfromhigh-gradematerials,manyofwhichhadpreviouslybeentooexpensive,notyetfullydeveloped,orunavailableinsuitabletool-makingquality.

WewerethefirstplanemakerstostartmakingourtoolsfromDuctileIron,whichisfarstrongerandmoreresilientthantraditionalGrayIron.

DuctileIronbodiesabsorbvibrations,arehighlyresistanttocracking,andwillsurviveanaccidentalfalltotheworkshopfloorthatwouldbreakaGrayIroncasting.

Inourtestswiththe60½RabbetBlockPlane,a15'dropontoconcrete,nosefirst,bentthetoolatrifle,butdidnotbreakthecasting.

ThoughCastIronhaslongbeenthematerialofchoiceformass-producedtools,weuseManganeseBronzeformanyofourcomponentsandsmallerplanebodies.

It isheavierthanIronandaddshefttothetool,doesn’trust,won’tcrackifdropped,andhaswonderfulwarmthinthehand.Itisoneofthehardest,stron-gestBronzealloysandwearsverywell,unlikeBrassandsofterBronzes.

iscast,particularlyinalongflatshapelikeabenchplane,internalstressesmustberelievedtoensurethemachinedcastingwillstayflatovertime.Westressrelieveallourcastingsbysoak-ingthemathightemperaturewithaslowcoolingover48hours.

Lie-Nielsenplanesarereadytouseoutofthebox,withnoneedoffurtherlappingorflatten-ing.Wecarefullygrindthesolesofallourplanestoaflatnesstoleranceof.0015"orbetter.Forshootingpurposes,thesidesofallourIron-bodiedplanesandBronzeBenchPlanesarealsogroundsquaretothesolewiththesameflatnesstolerance.Note:TheButtMortise,Scrub,andlargeandsmallScrapingPlanesaregroundonthesoleonly.

Flatness Tolerances

Thebladeisthemostimportantpartofahandtool.Ourbladesarethickerthanothermanu-facturers’forasolidcutwithminimalvibration.WeuseA2toolsteelformostofourbladesbecauseourtestshaveshownthattheedgelastssignificantlylongerthanO1toolsteel,andsharpensreadilywithwaterstones.BladesarehardenedtoRockwell60-62,cryogenicallytreat-edanddoubletemperedforanevenfinergrainandenhanceddurability.

SomefolksareusedtoworkingwithO1-typesteelandlikethewayitsharpenswithoilstones,soweofferO1bladesformanyofourplanesaswell.

Unlessyouarealreadyaseasonedhandtoolwoodworker,thevastarrayofhandtoolchoicesintoday'smarketmayseemoverwhelming.Herearesometipsforchoosingcoretoolsforfurniturebuilding.

Thecuttingangleistheanglethebladepresentstothewood.Onbevelupblades,thecuttingangleistheblade'sbevelangle(usually25°)plusthebeddingangle(usually12°).Onbeveldownblades(benchplanes),thecuttingangleistheanglethebladeissetinthetool.Traditionally,benchplaneshavethebladesetat45°,

butdifferentcuttinganglesarebetterfordifferenttypesofwork--whichiswhyweofferhighanglefrogs.

Theseanglesareintendedasaguide–theexactangleisnotasimportantasfindingwhatworksandusingasharpeningmethodthatallowsyoutore-sharpenatthesameangleeachtime.

When you first receive a plane from us, spend five minutes honing the blade on your finest stone. Then, adjust the cap pressure: on a Bench Plane you want to be able to adjust the blade depth without unlocking the cap; on a Block Plane, the cap needs to be a bit tighter. Then, use the tool.

Later on, adjust the chipbreaker and mouth opening as needed for your work. That's it!
