World Vision UpdateLife-changing partnerships Thank you Australia

Jetstar Airways are one of World Vision’s many outstanding corporate partners finding innovative ways to support our work around the world. The StarKids partnership between World Vision and Jetstar was launched in 2007 and has so far raised more than $7 million to help give children a brighter future.

Have you flown with Jetstar recently? Your loose change is making this possible. Funds donated support World Vision projects that are improving education, healthcare, economic opportunities and child protection in communities across south-east Asia, and in Australia and New Zealand.

Jetstar team members including CEO David Hall recently travelled to Cambodia to see the impact of StarKids first-hand. Along with visits to healthcare centres and local schools, they spent one afternoon working in the fields alongside an agricultural cooperative that is helping vulnerable families run their businesses, so they can invest in their children’s education. Find out more about StarKids at starkids.jetstar.com

Your legacyWorld Vision would like to acknowledge the legacy gifts we’ve received from those who have passed on. Our advisors are honoured to have walked alongside people as they’ve decided how they would like to make their final, most special gift.

For some, this has been a gift to ensure their sponsored child will continue to be looked after. While for others, it has been a gift to a World Vision program close to their heart.

We are deeply grateful to those who have left a gift in their Will, as well as to family members who made a gift in memory of a loved one. Including a gift in your Will is a meaningful and significant way to continue changing the lives of children and their families for generations to come. Learn more about supporting our work in this way at worldvision.com.au/gifts-in-wills

“Bill and I had always shared with the global community during our lifetime and we decided that including World Vision in our Wills, for a percentage of our estate, was the perfect way to continue to contribute even after we pass away.” – Nan Armstrong, Victoria

“It’s been amazing to see the StarKids funding in action, with the contributions from our team and our customers being put to fantastic use.” – David Hall, Jetstar Airways CEO

This year marks World Vision Australia’s 50th anniversary. Through all these years you, our loyal and generous supporters, have helped to make the world a different place, full of new opportunities for the children and communities we work with.

Thank you for sharing our vision for a brighter future. You have joined other Australians in rallying together to respond to emergencies, building lifelong bonds with your sponsored children, raising your voices to support the poor and marginalised, and pitching in your time and resources to support our work.

For 50 years, World Vision has worked hard to make sure that all resources entrusted to us are used as efficiently and effectively as possible to bring maximum impact to children and communities in need.

Together, we are building communities dedicated to creating change. We couldn’t do any of this without you!

Helping to save lives with food aid

Syria crisis Five years of conflict in Syria has left more than four million refugees seeking shelter in neighbouring countries, and countless more struggling to reach safety in Europe. An increasing number of those fleeing the Syrian conflict are unaccompanied children.

With your support, World Vision has helped 1.2 million people in Lebanon, 600,000 people in Jordan and 300,000 people in Syria, providing affected children and families with access to water and sanitation, education, essential supplies and more. Your support is also helping to build a sense of safety and normality for children who have seen far too much.

There is still urgent need as the conflict shows little sign of abating – see how your donation can make a difference: worldvision.com.au/syria

A former sponsored child dreams big, gives back

“ I constantly tell my students that they have to have a dream and never let go of that dream.” – Felisa, former sponsored child

Thanks for taking action!

Nepal – one year on “I want to say a huge thank you to people in Australia who have supported Nepal’s earthquake response. Because of you we were able to reach over 380,000 people with emergency relief. Now, we’re helping communities to rebuild and recover. We could not do this without you.” – Liz Satow, National Director of World Vision Nepal

Australian churches rallying to make a differenceWe’re thankful for the efforts of churches including Hillsong, Planetshakers and many others who are partnering with World Vision to transform the lives of children and communities around the world. Last year, Edge Church’s annual fundraiser, Ride for Hope, raised almost $500,000 for World Vision and other charity partners.

For nine years, Edge Church has supported a community in Zimbabwe, sponsoring over 500 children, helping to build wells, toilets, a secondary school and teacher’s cottage, and helping build a market to support 45 local businesses.

Many other churches have held a Syria Sunday to pray for and support those fleeing Syria. Find out how your church can partner with us: worldvision.com.au/church

Vision Sisters: packing hope with soap, gauze and string In homes, workplaces, churches and schools, more than 200 groups of Australian women calling themselves Vision Sisters have rolled up their sleeves to pack clean birthing kits to save the lives of mothers and babies in countries like Uganda. Vision Sisters participants also raised funds that will help to train volunteer community health workers to support pregnant and new mums in remote areas. To get your group involved, visit worldvision.com.au/visionsisters

When Felisa from Bolivia was a child, she dreamed of going to university and defying the traditional expectations for girls in her community. With the support of child sponsors, Felisa received school supplies and support to pursue her education, and World Vision worked to improve awareness in her community about the importance of staying in school.

“For a woman to study in this time it was basically something that was unheard of. I am the first girl to have ever graduated as a high school student in my community,” says Felisa.

Now Felisa has a law degree and works with World Vision to teach children about the dangers of human trafficking.

Your support through child sponsorship helps not only your sponsored child, but provides their community with the tools they need to change their future. Sponsor a child at worldvision.com.au/sponsor-a-child

This year supporters from all over Australia travelled to witness our work in communities first-hand – and drove incredible fundraising efforts to support the projects they visited.

Raelene Watts went to Uganda with a group of women to see the work of World Vision and how the money is used.

“I’ve been supporting World Vision for as long as I can remember and people have often said, ‘the money never gets there’. Well, I can go back to Australia and say the money certainly gets there.” Find out about upcoming Overseas Experiences and how you can participate: worldvision.com.au/overseasexperiences

Through our annual Multiplying Gift Appeal, supporters like you made a lasting impact on children and families facing severe food shortages around the world. Because of you, last year World Vision provided life-saving food aid to 878,133 people in 17 countries. This food was delivered alongside agriculture and livelihood projects that help entire communities to fight hunger in the long term.

Children at this school in South Sudan received nutritious food through a school meals program. Through your donations to the Multiplying Gift Appeal, food provided by the United Nations World Food Programme is delivered to children and families experiencing extreme hunger. World Vision is one of the World Food Programme’s largest food distribution partners. Because of this partnership, your donation enables us to provide up to 10 times its value in life-saving food aid to those who need it most.

You can donate to the Multiplying Gift Appeal today to help save the lives of hungry children and their families at worldvision.com.au/food

From living on the streets to Iron Chef Vo Duy Nam dropped out of school when he was still a young boy to work and support his family. Unable to earn enough money selling chopsticks and toothpicks near his home, Nam eventually travelled to Hanoi to live on the street and shine shoes.

Today, Nam is the head chef of a popular restaurant in Vietnam’s capital – a career he never would have dreamed of. Everything changed when he joined a World Vision Child Rescue supported program that provides shelter, meals and training opportunities for street children. This program is only possible because of supporters like you.

“I chose to study cookery,” says Nam. “I wanted to learn how to make delicious food to please others.”

With a passion for cooking, Nam’s skills led to him being chosen to appear on the TV talent show Iron Chef Vietnam – which opened the door to many job opportunities.

“I’ve worked hard every day for three reasons,” he says. “First, for my family who used to be very poor. Second, I didn’t want to disappoint the people who’ve helped me. And third, for a better life for myself.”
