Spring has sprung at Starhill Gallery with the latest S/S 2013 collections on parade at the

Opening Party of Starhill Gallery Fashion Week. Text Flavia Galeotti

Even though the climate in Malaysia never dips into the chills of winter, the excitement in the air for the 2013 Spring/Summer collections was palpable. Fashionistas feasted their eyes on offerings from Valentino,

REDValentino, Kenzo, M Missoni, McQ by Alexander McQueen, P.A.R.O.S.H, and home-grown talents Khoon Hooi and KLutched.

[7:30 pm] Champagne WishesThe aptly named Adorn Floor of Starhill Gallery was transformed into a chic lounge to kick off Fashion Week, its biggest fashion event of the year. Leica photographed the socialites and glitterati – people like Marion Caunter, Serena C, Ung Yiu Lin, and Andrea Fonseka – as they strutted into the venue, where they then sipped from flutes of Mumm Champagne and Absolut Vodka cocktails out of highball glasses. Tasty bite-sized canapés, assembled by YTL’s corporate executive master Chef Wai Look Chow, drifted around the room, tying together the whole Starhill Gallery experience of fashion, food, and fun. The empty catwalk was the centre of attention, as guests took to their seats for a front-row view of the fashion show.

[8:15 pm] Show TimeLights went down, music became just a little bit louder, and the show was on. Out of the gates was Kenzo in its signature vibrant colours and an appearance by its trademark tiger’s head emblazoned on a men’s pullover. Bright colours and patterns featured heavily in the collections of M Missoni and P.A.R.O.S.H, while REDValentino brought spring to the catwalk with fresh florals. Khoon Hooi put an Asian spin on the floral trend, using orchids on his spring dresses, followed by the latest collection of tough-chic clutches and minaudières from KLutched. McQ by Alexander McQueen featured the signature avant-garde tastes of the label, which translated well into spring and summer wear, and rounding off the evening were Valentino’s classic collection of fitted dresses and a show-stopping shocking red evening gown.

[9:00 pm] Beats of the ByrdAt the end of the show, a diminutive figure emerged from the curtains at the end of the runway, introducing herself as Arabyrd. KL’s hip hop darling was a firecracker on the stage as she performed songs like Drop It and LOV, among others, to a captivated audience, setting the party tone for the rest of the evening.

[9:15 pm] Party CentralDJ Patricia Knudsen carried on the celebration to the end of the night as guests mingled, while others took to creating their own dance floor around the catwalk.

Canapés and cocktails float between guests, as more and more people arrive, filling the intimate space of the Starhill Culinary Studio to comfortable capacity.

[7:20 pm] Welcome and ThanksDato’ Yeoh Soo Min, Executive Director of YTL Corporation Bhd, takes to the podium to welcome one and all to this exclusive event. She briefly introduces the book, after which she shares some stories of her own enjoyable dining experiences in the YTL properties. Author Kim Inglis follows with her own speech, elaborating on her rationale behind the title, saying she chose the word ‘perennial’ because it means enduring and long-lasting, “reflective of the YTL organisation”.

[7:45 pm] A Food SafariA four-course dinner caps off the night where chefs from YTL properties like the local Shook! Kuala Lumpur, Gonbei San, Fisherman’s Cove, and visiting international chefs from Shook! Shanghai and Muse Hôtel de Luxe Saint-Tropez, prepare dishes highlighted in the book. Overseen by YTL Corporate Executive Chef Wai Look Chow, mouth-watering dishes like soft shell maki and kaki agebonoyaki are served, followed by a steamed fillet of saltwater barramundi with roasted eggplant and pumpkin sauce, pressed chicken sautéed with grilled asparagus and jasmine rice, culminating with a strawberry dessert in a crunchy pastry and light vanilla cream. This gourmet experience gave the guests a chance to experience the dishes they can replicate at home with the adapted recipes in the book, of which everyone took home a copy as a token of thanks from YTL for attending the evening of excitement, good food and wonderful company.

Young GunMalaysian beauty, singer, songwriter and entrepreneur Amanda Imani shares her

favourite things about Starhill Gallery.

O nly 22, Amanda Imani already wears many hats – singer, writer, composer and producer as well as an entrepreneur who runs her

own recording studio, Amanda Imani Productions Sdn Bhd. With two albums under her belt – 2010’s eponymous Amanda Imani and Yeah, the young songstress also recently won the Best Collaboration Award at the recent VOIZE Independent Music Awards (VIMA) 2013, held in Kuala Lumpur, for her song Cemburu.

the 1990s. I grew up in this area and also studied in Bukit Bintang Girls’ School. That’s probably why I am always around here in Starhill Gallery! I also like the fact that it has all the top-notch brands like Dior as well as accessories that you can’t find in any other shopping mall.

When it comes to family occasions, Shook! restaurant will definitely be our pick for light and hearty meals. I like the way the food is served, especially the meticulous attention to the decorations and the portions are just nice.

I also love the kebabs in Tarbush, which is the house specialty. It’s rich in ingredients and really delicious.

Once in a while, I will pamper myself at BMIC Nail Spa Salon with a manicure and pedicure. The place is very cosy. Personally, I like the paraffin treatment, which has this warm oil-based wax that keeps my skin smooth and moisturised.

I like the ambience in SOHO, which is where I usually get my hair makeover. The stylists are really friendly and they use only products that suit my hair.

I love shoes, which explains why I have more shoes than clothes. I love the shoes from Sergio Rossi because of their unique designs. I like weird designs, with studs on them, which I find interesting. It’s the rock and roll style that I am quite into now.

I like the latest animal pieces from Boucheron, especially the Pegasus ring, which I saw on the web. For earrings, I like dangly pieces with diamonds or something that’s simple but bold and unique.

My favourite designer is Valentino as it has a span of beautiful and nice dresses to choose from. The feminine designs are appealing and I particularly love the vivid colours.

I love Armani/Casa! It's very minimalistic and modern, with a touch of gothic flair. I love how simple its furniture is. It looks amazing under dim lights.

I like something simple and classy when it comes to watches; something I can pair with almost anything and one that would be good for day or night. I guess I would have to say Jaeger-LeCoultre!

The Vanguard Of Time

As the first watch fair of the year, it falls upon the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) to set the

tone for 2013. Here are some shining examples of high horology that will soon make their way to

Starhill Gallery.

Jaeger-LeCoultre marks its 180th anniversary with three celebratory timepieces, including the Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Jubilee (above).

Text Weng Sheng Thong

For timepiece connoisseurs and watch journalists, 2013 kicked off with a bang at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva. Despite freezing blizzards that wrecked plenty of mayhem in travel arrangements, the

forces of nature could not deny the visitors who got their full and just satisfaction within the halls of the Palexpo in Geneva.

Among the brands that were present at SIHH was Audemars Piguet, who commemorated two decades of the Royal Oak Offshore with the scintillating Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication. This 2013 novelty takes high horology to an entirely new level, with its arsenal of functions, including a minute repeater, split-second chronograph and perpetual calendar complications, housed within its generous 44mm titanium case.

On the other side of the Palexpo Hall, Jaeger-LeCoultre was abuzz with the excitement of its 180th anniversary celebration. A trio of celebratory pieces elicited awe, namely, the gorgeous Master Grande Tradition Tourbillon Cylindrique à Quantième Perpétual Jubilee, the sleek Master Ultra T h i n J u b i le e a n d t h e m e s m e r i s i n g ly beautiful flagship Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon 3 Jubilee. Never one to be outdone, Richard Mille continued its otherworldly streak with awesomely indestructible timepieces conceived for the likes of Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake, also known as The Beast, and tennis’ Rafael Nadal, the Spanish Bull. This year, the brand builds on last year’s RM 056 to introduce the RM 56-01, encased purely in sapphire crystal like its predecessor. This material, famous for its difficulty to shape, rewards master craftsmen like Richard Mille with unparalleled strength and allows connoisseurs a clear view of the beautiful titanium manual winding tourbillon movement within. This 2013 piece draws inspiration from a quote by Anna Pavlova: “I’ve been dreaming that I was a

ballerina, and that I was spending my whole life dancing as a butterfly”.

The Ballerine Enchantée captures this image perfectly, where a simple press of

If you long for the ‘good old days’ of the golden 1950s, look no further than Baume & Mercier’s Clifton 1830, a classical piece that has been reborn with a contemporary feel, so you get the best of both worlds without looking old fashioned. And, with Valentine’s Day rolling around the corner after SIHH, love was in the air as Vacheron Constantin presented a lovely platter of ladies timepieces. What better gift for that special lady

The arrival of the long-anticipated Grand Complication by A Lange & Söhne was greeted with awe and wonder. The Saxon watchmaker goes above and beyond the call of duty to fulfil and surpass the vigorous demands required of a grand complication timepiece. With only six such timepieces in existence, nothing says bespoke quite like a Grande Complication. DONNA SPARachel Yong, PR & Marketing Manager, YTL Land. The Experience: I’ve always enjoyed the massages at Donna Spa but, this time, chose to combine it with a herbal hot compress treatment. My session began with a relaxing cup of hot ginger tea, followed by a floral foot bath, enjoyed amidst the spa’s beautiful and exotic Balinese surround ings . I a lso en joyed a herbal steam bath, followed by a soak in the hydrotherapy pool’s warm waters and a quick invigorating dip in the cold plunge pool, before my treatment proper began. I loved the soothing warmth of the herbal compress. Due to an old slipped disc, I suffer recurrent back and neck aches and this really

made me feel better and more comfortable. After, my therapist Ina gave me a full body massage which lasted for a glorious 100 minutes. She is, without doubt, my favourite therapist at Donna Spa, as she instinctively knows just which areas need extra attention or which spots need a little extra finger work or her firm sweeping strokes. As a final treat, Ina gave me a quick scalp massage as a sweet send-off. I’ve tried out many spas before but this is definitely one of my favourites!

The Bonus: Hot compress, flower bath and scrub packages, each lasting two hours and with a session of Donna Spa’s famous Excellent Donna Massage, are available at an offer price of just RM390 (normal price RM530-RM580). For bookings, tel: 03-2141 8999.

After, my therapist Rosita used luxurious rose cream essence to treat me to a thoroughly enjoyable facial massage session, said to promote circulation, is rich in anti-aging properties and works effect ively to br ighten one’s complexion. You could say I was in a relaxed trance-like state by then! An ultrasonic machine was then employed for a big oxygen boost. To finish, the W3 essence mask was applied, which is made of silk and infused with a potent serum of act ive ingredients, to deeply hydrate skin while working on reducing wrinkles and repa i r ing any damage . This ended with an application of Beaubelle’s most effective moisturiser, which was based on my personal skin condition and

put at ease by my experienced and gentle therapist. My face was first prepared by sessions of cleansing, scrubbing, extraction and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a non-invasive treatment that penetrates the skin’s outer layer to stimulate cell growth and collagen formation from within. It’s perfect if you have spots caused by aging and sun damage, pigmentation, blemishes and wrinkles. The procedure turned out to be painless and I am pleased to report that my face turned out v is ibly smoother and glowing, even, afterwards. My colleagues all remarked how my complexion appeared to be luminous and bright, and it’s a treatment I’d definitely want to do again. I was also treated to a hot stone massage and I walked out of the salon thoroughly relaxed and pleased with the results.

The Bonus: A special promotion is on now at IPL Skin Care Clinique, where there’s a special IPL first trial offer at just RM299. Valid from 1 April – 30 June, 2013. For bookings, tel: 03-2141 4277.

BMIC NAIL SPA SALONYulia Dolmatova, PR & Marketing Director, YTL Land. The Experience: I tried the signature mani-pedi and thought the service was very good indeed. I also appreciate that they use OPI products, which have all the latest colours, and is located in a quiet corner of Starhill Gallery, so you don’t have to worry about passers-by looking in at you. The manicurists here are all very professional and efficient, so all you really need to do is relax or watch a bit of television while they work on your nails. If you’re passionate about beautiful hair colour, this is perfect for you! My session began with a wash and rinse, with the chromatics treatment done in between, as well as a short steam session for the colour extend mask treatment to really penetrate into the hair. If you like fashion colours, this should last for three to four months, while natural colours can last up to six months. “This dish of yellowtail carpaccio, studded with little beads of ikura (salmon roe), accompanied by servings of fresh kampachi belly, toro and salmon sashimi is one of Gonbei’s most requested items. I like the simplicity and presentation of it. Few things can beat the purity and flavour of fresh seafood and I think this captures the essence of spring and summer cuisine to me. If you like, it can also be enjoyed with a serving of green tea noodles, or cha soba, served, preferably, on a bed of cracked ice – a fantastic dish, particularly in a humid tropical climate like Malaysia’s. A glass of chilled saké or shochu to match would be all you’d really need for this.”

Chinese Chef, Shook!

“In Chinese cuisine, winter fare tends to be very heavy and nourishing… very po, as the Cantonese would say. So, this dish of simple stir-fried bamboo shoots with shitake mushrooms and carrots is an ideal springtime entrée. It’s very refreshing and light. Also, spring bamboo shoots, which we import from China, are particularly delicious and contain detoxifying and slimming properties – perfect after several long, cold winter months. I’d recommend having this with traditional Chinese flower teas, like lily-jasmine. A perfect match, in my opinion!”

“I base all the dishes I create on the basic principles of structure, contrast and taste. For this dish, which I’ve christened Texture-Taste-Temperature, I wanted to capture the idea of the earth reawakening after a long, cold winter. Also, they are super-rich in starch and have fantastic flavour during the cool season of spring. Here, I’ve used an assortment of root vegetables and plant roots prepared in various forms, temperatures and textures, just like the dish’s name suggest: lily bulb sashimi, Yukon Gold potato espuma, confit of red taproot, kabocha mash, lotus root chips, horseradish puree, celeriac gelato, glazed ninjin ball and jeweled yam puff. You could also call this a study in organic spring root vegetables.”

Wai Look Chow“I’m from England originally, so two things that spell spring to me instantly would be elderflower and rhubarb. There’s elderflower cordial, jelly and even battered elderflower fritters to enjoy! Here, I’ve presented the two ingredients together in my version of a deconstructed trifle. There’s elderflower cream with vanilla, a raspberry jam roll, poached rhubarb, squares of elderflower and raspberry jelly and a scoop of vanilla custard ice cream served on red velvet crumble. This dish isn’t on any of the dessert menus yet but is available upon request. It’s all very spring indeed!”

Grill Chef, Shook!

“I had the privilege to be based at the Muse Hôtel de Luxe in Saint-Tropez, a YTL Hotel, for six months last year and this dish is inspired from my time there. I worked at the Muse in spring and summer, and I remember enjoying fresh peaches in various forms – fresh, served alongside cooked meats and hot dishes as well as in desserts, like sabayon and crème Catalan. This dish is not on Shook!’s regular menu but is available upon request. Here, I’ve paired caramelised slices of fresh peach to be served alongside roasted lamb loin and vanilla mashed potatoes. This dish not only represents spring and summer for me, but also brings back wonderful memories of my work experience in heavenly Saint-Tropez.”

Ahmad Haidzir

“When the weather gets warmer, nothing beats an ice-cold refresher. These are some of the more popular cocktails at the Village Bar and they are all quite different from each other, yet share the same elements of lightness, colour and punches of flavour. There’s the Campari Mojito, a light and lovely mix of Campari, mint and sparkling water, while the Blue Hawaiian features blue curacao, white rum and the tropical touch of lime. The prettiest one that brings springtime to mind, for me personally, is Think Pink – a cocktail made using Gekkeikan sake, Cointreau, cranberry juice and a dash of orange bitters – which, due to its soft pink colour, particularly reminds me of sakura season in Japan, the perfect picture of spring.”
