The three new ACAwhite surfaces are de-signed to meet a rangeof lighting applicationneeds while all provid-ing a high level of re-flectance, maximizing efficiency anddesign flexibility. The new materials dif-fer in levels of specularity and diffusion, giving you the freedom to choose theright material for the application withoutsacrificing reflectance levels and overallluminaire performance. The new materi-als are:• ACA Super UltraWhite 95 LG – a lowgloss at 95- 96 TR producing a broad beam.

• ACA Super Ultra-White 95 TXL – a tex-tured producing aneven broader beam.• ACA Super Ultra-White 95 HG – the high

gloss provides the best beam control.

The SuperUltraWhite 95 LG is a lowgloss, high reflectance, material. It is de-signed for reflectors where the applica-tion requires a level of beam control butthe inherent advantages of having a semi-diffuse white finish are still necessary.

A recessed luminaire is a typical ap-plication for this material. The low gloss

feature of the material will add a smallamount of beam control, allowing you toaim the light across the target area. Thediffuse white base will allow the light tohave some scatter, smoothing out the pat-tern and adding high angle light.

The result is a smooth, uniformbeam, featuring some beam control tomeet the application requirements. Theefficiency will be significantly improvedover generic white powder coat paint, re-sulting in higher achieved illuminancelevels across the target plane. In sampleluminaires featuring an indirect sourceand a reflector, efficiencies in the high80s has been achieved.

The Super UltraWhite 95 TXL is ahigh reflectance, textured, diffuse sur-face. The texture and diffuseness make itideal for reflector applications where a

smooth and uniform beam must beachieved and there is not a requirementfor tight beam control. Of the three thisis the most diffuse, yet maintains a highlevel of reflectance over increasing inci-dence angles.

An example of a luminaire applica-tion for the 95 TXL is an LED mixingchamber, where the goals are to mix thecolors from the LED sources creating awhite light source and to blend the im-ages of the individual LEDs. Used behinda diffusing lens, the textured material willscatter the light creating a uniform ap-pearance across the output lens.

The material would also be applica-

ble for design goals where the entirespace needs to be lit—like a classroomenvironment where you want to not onlylight the desks but also the entire walls.

The Super UltraWhite 95HG is ahigh gloss, high reflectance, material of-fering the most specular reflectance. It iswell suited for high bay aisle applicationswhere light will be predominately aimeddownwards but you still need some lightpushed to the higher vertical angles touniformly light the stacks.

These 95 TR white coatings are easyto work with—they are highly formable, will not yellow, delaminate and the pro-tective strippable masking can be easilyremoved.

PHOENIX—LightLab Internationalannounced that it has formally receivedAccreditation to ISO/IEC 17025:2005for Energy Efficient Lighting Systemsby the National Institute of Standardsand Technology (NIST) through its Na-tional Voluntary Laboratory Accredita-tion Program (NVLAP). LightLab(NVLAP Lab Code: 200989-0) is an in-dependent test and certification Labo-ratory serving the Lighting andElectro-Optics Industries.

According to Lee A. Stephens, Labo-

ratory Manager, it was decided to switchfrom their previous Accreditation Agency(IAS) due to customer demand. “Whileboth agencies operate under MutualRecognition Agreements, many lightingmanufacturers prefer that their testing lab-oratories be Accredited by NIST NVLAP.”

“While our laboratory is equipped toaccommodate all types of lighting prod-ucts and bare illumination sources, thePhoenix Lab was designed specificallyfor (IES) LM-79 LED photometry, col-orimetry and thermal measurement re-

lated services,” addedStephens. LightLab em-ploys a custom-built,fully digital 5 meter rotat-ing mirror Type-C pho-tometer. This uniquemachine is capable oftesting luminaires up to1.6 meters in length. Fullcolor analysis (by angle)is also offered through the use of spectro-radiometric scanning techniques. Light-Lab also offers In-Situ TemperatureMeasurement (ISTM) of Solid StateLighting Products.

Ideally, everyone’s workspace wouldbe illuminated by natural light, sincestudies have shown that workplace day-lighting (the use of natural light to illu-minate indoor spaces) contributes tobetter morale, reduced eyestrain, andimproved moods for employees. Day-lighting offers numerous benefits toemployers as well, including enhancedproductivity and decreased absenteeismamong workers, and reduced energyconsumption and lower energy bills forthe building itself.

However, despite all the benefits ofworkplace daylighting, many employeeworkstations have little or no naturallight. Oftentimes, this is due to buildingdesign, which makes it difficult to allownatural light into workspaces if they arenot located near exterior windows.

Hillenbrand, Inc. of Batesville, Ind.encountered this issue when remodeling

their office facility. Tracy Baker, facili-ties and administration manager of Hil-lenbrand, said, “We had to move some ofour executives out of very nice windowoffices, and create an interior space forthem in which it was impossible to installwindows.” Baker continued, “With thehelp of our roofing contractor andCarlisle SynTec Systems, we looked athow we could bring in natural light forthese folks who are used to window of-fices.”

Harry Mitchell, the senior projectmanager for roofing contractor WilliamKramer and Son, Inc. Approached BobWhitesell, an independent Carlisle Syn-Tec Systems sales representative basedout of Cincinnati, with his quandary. To-gether, Whitesell and Mitchell came tothe conclusion that the best solution wasCarlisle SynTec’s SunPath tubular sky-lights, because they can be used to bring

natural light into almost any dark or unlitspace. Daylight enters through a cleartop dome on the roof, and shines downthrough a length of reflective tube to aprismatic diffuser, which disperses thelight evenly throughout the indoor space.

Whitesell was very confident sug-gesting the SunPath tubular skylights forthis project because, he stated, “The tu-bular skylights are manufactured for thecommercial market, so they’re safe, durable, and they’re backed by Carlisle,a recognized leader in the marketplace. They’re also very easy and quick to in-stall, compared to traditional skylights

SunPath Tubular Skylights with window wells.” Hillenbrand’s employees were very

pleased with the finished product. Aftermoving into his new office, Chris Lowery,Hillenbrand’s director of public policyand engagement, said “I’ve been in officespaces that have outside windows, someon the corners of buildings. There are nowindows in my office now, but there ismore than enough natural light coming inthrough the skylights. It makes a real dif-ference during the work day.”

“There are many ways to increaseproductivity with natural light and itjust makes people generally feel better. You don’t feel closed in,” said Baker. He concluded, “The SunPath tubularskylights were a natural fit and saved usa ton of time over a traditional skylightinstallation. There are a lot of things Ilike about the SunPath Tubular Sky-lights, but the best thing is the employeesatisfaction.”

tougher, higher-performing materials thatwill make next-generation LED designsmore competitive with conventionalsources. Such materials will necessarilyneed to perform reliably under the harshoperating environments in which LEDsare increasingly operating, and deliverbroader options for more sophisticatedLED designs. As many materials suppli-ers tout their products as the answer tothese challenges, advanced silicone tech-nologies are proving themselves as themost compelling choice.

Silicones are particularly well suitedto meet the expanding demands of LEDapplications. These versatile materialshave a proven history of reliable perform-ance in demanding electronics applica-tions, and have shown demonstrablevalue in expanding design flexibility. De-signers innovating new lamps, luminairesand modules are capitalizing on these

benefits, enabling them to create higher-performing LED parts with multiplefunctions, greater integration and highlydetailed design features.

Dow Corning, a global leader in sil-icones, silicon-based technology and in-novation is committed to supporting thegrowth of LEDs. Its broad portfolio ofproven products offers an expansive tool-box for designers to boost LED perform-ance and make solid-state lighting a morecompetitive alternative to incandescentand compact fluorescent sources. Widelyused already as optical encapsulants toseal and protect sensitive LED electron-ics circuitries, Dow Corning silicones arenow finding greater use in applicationssuch as primary and secondary lens ma-terials where their high refractive indexand moldability help to shape light andoptimize LED efficiency. The company’smoldable optical silicones, for example, enable LED lamp and luminaire manu-facturers to design complex shapes, de-tailed micro-scale optical structures,

larger parts and even undercuts, whichare difficult to achieve with traditionaloptical materials. Silicone technologiesalso offer new options for controllingcolor quality, accelerating productivityand reducing waste and cost.

Another key area where silicones areespecially beneficial is improving thermalmanagement. In the past, LEDs primarilycompeted with compact fluorescent lampsand halogens in low-power and low-lumenfixture applications. More recently, how-ever, LED sources are attracting greater in-terest for higher power and higher densityapplications like streetlights, office lightingand compact high-intensity discharge sys-tems used to illuminate sports venues. Inthese and other applications, the operatingenvironment for LED lamps and lumi-naires is becoming hotter—particularly asdesigners continue to pack LEDs closer to-gether to meet demand for greater bright-ness from smaller, more compact designs. This heat can degrade LED performance, reliability and lifetime.

DOW CORNING(continued from page 1)

Dow Corning’s LED silicone tech-nologies are ideally-suited for such appli-cations. Optically stable at temperaturesreaching 150 C and higher, these productsresist yellowing and physical degradationbetter than organic materials. This helpsensure that LED sources can meet thelumen maintenance requirements oftoday’s most challenging lighting appli-cations, and maintain excellent opticalquality and reliable performance overtheir expected 50,000-hour lifetimes.

The company’s expanding portfolio ofhigh-performance LEDs silicones spansthe entire lighting value chain – from LEDchip fabrication and packaging to lamp andluminaire design and assembly. They arerapidly becoming the top materials ofchoice in an ever-broadening range of LEDapplications worldwide as global industrydemand for higher brightness and longerdevice lifetimes continues to grow.

ramping our sales and production, butwe’ve also been spending time educatingour customers on the unique attributes ofthe NEXTLamp.

Q: On that end, we’re joined by one ofyour initial customers, Richard Young, from the PG&E Food Service Technol-ogy Center. Can you tell us a littleabout what the FSTC does and yourexperience with NEXT Lighting?

Young: The FSTC is the industryleader in commercial kitchen energy ef-ficiency and appliance performancetesting. We study all the ways that com-mercial food service operations use en-ergy and water. We are an unbiasedenergy efficiency project and part ofour mission is to educate our industryon emerging technologies like LEDlighting. We started talking with NEXTlate last year about their non-traditionalapproach to creating a linear LED so-lution and its potential application incommercial kitchens replacing linearfluorescent lamps. While we are not alighting lab—we leave that to our

friends at the California Lighting Tech-nology Center—we help bridge the in-formation gap between the lightingindustry and food service operators.

Katona: Richard and his team have beengreat. They really ‘walk the talk.’ Theirlab is a commercial kitchen and weworked with them on energy saving in-stallations in the kitchen and in their of-fice, where they’re realizing up to 78percent savings.

Young: The transition to LED lightingin the food service industry presentshuge opportunities for both energy sav-ings and enhancement of the atmos-phere. We are watching food serviceoperators embrace LED lighting muchfaster than they adopted fluorescenttechnology. We’ve previously done alot of education on A-lamps, PAR’s andMR-16’s for front-of-house lighting, but really started looking at the poten-tial for LED retrofit of back-of-houselighting when we learned about theNEXTLamps.

Katona: We believe the food service in-dustry is an ideal user because NEXT-Lamps are shatterproof, provide more

light for food preparation, and save heatand energy.

Q: There are many T8 replacements onthe market. What are some reasonsthat NEXTLamps are an attractive op-tion?

Katona: NEXTLamps are designedand built in the U.S. to be a smart LEDlighting platform that uses our cus-tomers’ existing infrastructure, but isalso extensible. NEXTLamps allowfor easy integration with controls foroccupancy sensing, daylight harvest-ing, demand-response, and other appli-cations developing around digitallighting solutions. NEXTLamps pro-vide a simple retrofit solution with thesame functionality as more expensiveintegrated LED luminaires.

Young: We’ve been very hesitant topromote LED T8 replacement tubes tothe food service industry based on pooreconomics and inappropriate matchingof solid-state lighting with fluorescentfixtures. Others have taken a sort ofFrankenstein approach. But the NEXTfolks got our attention – quite literally– by producing a lamp that was built

NEXT LIGHTING(continued from page 1)

from the ground up to take full advan-tage of LED technology. I know it’stheir motto, but the NEXT Team reallydid ‘Think outside the tube.’

Q: What can we expect to see from theNEXT team at the show and this com-ing year?

Katona: At LIGHTFAIR, we’ll beshowcasing our retrofit kits, demon-strating compatibility with controls, and highlighting the unique look andfeel of the NEXTLamp. Later this year, we’ll expand our retrofit product lineand will further our partnerships withother solution providers, bringing addi-tional value and functionality not of-fered by other T8 retrofits. We are alsoinnovating under the radar to drivevalue in lighting beyond energy savings, but I’ll leave that for our nextinterview.

place becoming a favorite among lightingdesigners across the country.

Q: Why Did You Start LED Inspira-tions?

A: As a showroom owner in 2008 I de-cided that mastering LED productswould be THE strategy that would getus through the recession – to be knownas the ‘go to’ store for everything LEDand energy efficient. Using this strat-egy we sold a significant volume ofLED products, especially LED tapelight. We used it everywhere – in clos-ets, under cabinet, over cabinet, toekicks, drawers, signs, china closets, coves, edge-lighting glass, back-light-ing onyx. And then—it started to getreturned. We had issues with connec-tors, failing adhesive, and dimming, butthe biggest problem we had was withcolor consistency. It simply looked bad.

Enamored with the idea of LED TapeLight because of its versatility but dis-satisfied with the LED tape light avail-able, I reinvented the product from thecircuit board up. My experiences in thefield working with LED tape lighttaught me the strengths of the productas well as the problems needing to befixed.

Q: What Makes Your Product Differ-ent?

A: There are eight significant differencesbetween our LED tape light and our com-petitors’: our connectors, thepolyurethane coating, our adhesive, thecolor consistency, dim-ability/integra-tion, color offerings, reversible connec-tions, PCB construction. Stop by our

booth at LIGHTFAIR and take the tour!

Q: What Do Your Customers LoveAbout LED Inspirations Most?

A: They love us for three reasons. First, they trust our superior quality, architec-tural grade LED tape light.

Second, they LOVE our fanatical techsupport/design/call-us-with-any-ques-tion-and-get-a-live-knowledgable-per-son/expert team. Many approachlighting from a design perspective andare uncomfortable with the technicalnature of LED products. This is espe-cially true with a product like LED tapelight where the design includes com-plexities such as run-length limits, matching the proper size driver to theload, and many dimming issues.

Our technical team gives our cus-tomers the support needed to specifyour products with confidence. I chal-lenge you to throw anything at ourteam: a huge design, dimming ques-tions, dmx installations, cell phonephotos of an installation, an electri-cian calling wanting to know what todo with the ‘blue’ wire, system inte-gration questions, sketches on a nap-kin—we will handle it all! We willanswer your questions, provide a lay-out, BOM, a quote, or whatever elseis needed, and all that in a timelyfashion.

Lastly, our customers love our 99 percentfill rate. We have had the privilege ofdoing many jobs because we had productin stock and the customer needed it im-mediately.
