Double Page Spread research Ella DuncanMediaAS level

Double page spread A double page spread is a layout that covers two facing

pages in a magazine or a newspaper. The double page spread is in most magazines a whole section dedicated to a specific group or artist, which will be the same in my media product. Some of the elements in the spread are not always as important as other parts, so whilst creating the spread, one should choose carefully where images, quotes etc... will be placed. The image of the artist consisting in the double page spread will be a central point in the spread.

The most visible places

The most obvious and visible place in which the most important elements should be included would be the outside edges and the top right hand corner, due to the fact most readers flick through with their right hand, attracting the readers attention. Having eye-catching quotes and words in the corners will cause a reaction from the reading which will engage them to continue reading the double page spread and the rest of the magazine. When the reader quickly flicks through the magazine, images in the centre and the bottom of the spread will not be as eye-catching so this is where the interview and the smaller writing should be placed.

The double page spread will have a main house colour that will be continued throughout the double page spread. This colour may match the theme and outfit of the model included in the spread showing the reader the continuity of the spread and makes it appealing to them, the use of a continuous colour and font etc… also makes the spread look professional. The text included on the spread should be continuous and have a flow so when creating the spread, the blocks of text should be together so that the reader can read the text (e.g. interview) in order and an easy to understand way. The text should be in order and including barriers blocking the flow of the story could make readers choose to stop reading, the story should flow clearly making is accessible for the reader. Columns would make the text simple and easy for the reader to follow, the font of the text and colour should also be simple and match the theme of the page. Advertisements should be placed on the right of the page agreeing the discussion of readers flicking through with their right hand, the advertisements will be more visible on the right hand side of the page.

Arrangement of the spread
