Kutama is boiling

Chaos has been boiling over in the Kutama area since Sunday, after the police failed to arrest sus-pects the community have claimed could be involved in the suspect-ed ritual murder of Mavhungu Ramadzhamba of Tshikwarani Ha-Kutama.

Earlier that day, a meeting was held between the local police and different community structures at the Kutama royal kraal. The meeting relates to the mysterious disappearance and subse-quent discovery of the decomposed body of Mavhangu at Madodonga last month. His body was found hanging from the rafters of a dilapidated shop.

It is still a mystery how the body ended in the shop, far away from his home.

The aim of Sunday’s meeting was to address the grievances of mem-bers of the community, who felt that the police were reluctant to arrest

the suspects, whom they believe to be members of the community. A community leader, Ms Phumudzo Manenzhe, said she was worried that ritual murders might be resurfacing in the area.

“It is clear that the man was mur-dered somewhere else and hanged in the shop. Judging by what we saw, he would not have been able to climb the steep slopes and jungle around the roof to hang himself. There were drops of blood that led us to the spot, and we found drops on the fl oor next to the body.”

She added that the deceased’s legs were touching the ground. “We will definitely find the people behind all this. The community of Kutama will not rest until the perpetrators are brought to book. People must learn that they will never become rich by killing innocent community members.”

Dog goes on the rampageA dog went on the rampage, kill-ing three pigs, injuring another two and biting two residents at Madombidzha Zone One.

The terrifying incident took place in the late hours of Sunday, in the evening of Monday and on Tuesday morning.

Mr Reuben Nwanamidwa is the one most affected after losing four pigs, with more were injured. According to Nwanamidwa, his daughter Sharon found three pigs lying dead in the yard, with grue-some injuries to their faces, on Monday morning. “Another pig was in the shelter, severely bitten in the face and with both eyes gouged out,” she said. “It is still alive and in great pain.”

Sharon explained that during the evening she had heard noises made by dogs and pigs. She came out to investigate and found the dog from her neighbour biting their big, white pig on the face and neck.

“I picked up a stone and threw it at the crazy dog, and she ran away,” she said.

However, the white pig had since disappeared from home, following the attack.

As if that was not enough, Sha-ron's nine-year-old nephew, Moeket-si, was returning from a spaza shop at around 05:55 when the dog appeared and jumped at his face. Luckily, Moeketsi noticed the dog's moves and shielded his face with his hand while he ducked to the other side. It pinned its fang in his wrist.

“The boy was immediately rushed to the clinic, where he was treated and placed on a rabies vaccine pro-gramme,” said Nwanamidwa. “I am

not worried about my killed pigs; I am totally concerned about the chil-dren's safety here at home. We have seen this dog bite more dogs around here, and we fear that all these dogs will be going crazy and killing our children and grandchildren soon.”

Nwanamidwa contacted the Tshil-wavhuku police to come and put down the dog. “They came but refused to kill it, saying that they don’t just shoot animals,” said Nwanamidwa.

When Limpopo Mirror visited the dog's owner, Mr Gilbert Ratombo, at his home, the dog was seen tied to a tree with a steel wire. In the company of its three puppies, she kept chewing the iron frame and wire viciously, glaring at everyone in sight with her vicious eyes.

“I am surprised by this dog's strange behaviour,” said Ratombo. “Some time ago, a dog behaving strangely came from my neighbour and attacked my dog. But now that dog is said to have foamed at the mouth and died.”

Samson Ratombo is the one who tied the dog to the tree. “It bit me in the hand; it's a small issue,” he said when his brother, Gilbert, and Nwanamidwa coerced him to go to the local clinic.

On 17 January 2012, there was a similar incident in the same part of Madombidzha, when residents woke up to find their dogs lying dead with severed and injured torsos and amputated heads.

Meanwhile, the Makhado office of the State Veterinary Services was not in a position to provide the newspaper with comment at the time of going to press.

A SANParks (South Africa Na-tional Parks) employee tasked with the safeguarding of wild animals has allegedly been sell-ing these animals to game hunt-ers by means of fake permits.

The employee, who cannot be named until he has appeared in court, was arrested on Monday, following an investigation by the SANParks Environmental Crime Unit.

According to SANParks’ act-ing head of communications, Mr Reynold Thakhuli, the employee

was working for the Mapungub-we National Park, which is also a world heritage site.

The employee, said Thakhuli in a press release, made use of official SANParks stationery to mislead professional hunters and game meat operators to come and hunt on Den Staat, which is a state-owned farm bordering Mapungubwe. “The misuse of official stationery made these illegal transactions appear to be an activity sanctioned by SAN-Parks,” said Thakhuli.

As many as 16 groups a day would hunt illegally on Den Staat, which also borders with Botswana and Zimbabwe. Fake permits were allegedly arranged for the hunting of leopards and “other protected animals.”

In addition, Thakhuli said, the investigation unit positively con-nected ten hunters to the employ-ee’s permits. The hunters came from Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo. They were not arrested but were warned to appear in court this coming month.

From page 1Ms Tshifularo Ramadzham-

ba, sister of the deceased, agreed that they were not hap-py about the way in which the police were handling the case. She acknowledged that there were parts missing from Mavhungu’s body. “The police are not willing to arrest the suspects. They are not acting against people we know are involved in the killing.” She said they were still waiting for the police to supply them with the post mortem report.

On Monday, members of the community sang freedom songs and marched for nearly four kilometres from Kutama High and Mmbabada Primary to the Kutama tribal office. They pre-sented a memorandum of their grievances to the police. Their

list includes that the killing be investigated speedily, the urgent arrest of the suspects before a recurring of the incident, and that no bail be granted to the culprits involved in the ritual killing.

Police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said they had decided to visit the commu-nity in order to explain how they operate. “At this stage, we have no evidence linking anybody to the death of Mavhungu. We have questioned those people the community want arrested, but we have found nothing so far to connect them to the case. We are now appealing to members of the public to give us space to work on the case.”

He also appealed to members of the community to supply information that can shed light

on “this mystery”.On Tuesday, the Kutama

tribal office was closed until further notice, and the commu-nity later blocked the road from Muduluni to Tshikwarani with scrap metal, dustbins, wood, and burning tyres. They even broke down the bus stop and put it in the road.

On Wednesday, the com-munity went to all the schools around Kutama to force the learners to go out and support them in their demand that the al-leged ritual suspects be arrested.

At the time of our going to press, protest actions had spilt over to all the villages in Kutama, as well on the main roads leading through the area. Allegations that the protestors were throwing stones at passing traffic were also made.

Dead: Josephine Kutama.

In yet another brutal murder, a gogo residing at Ha-Magau in the Sinthumule area was hacked to death last Thursday night.

Vho-Josephine Kutama was at-tacked in her room by the assailants. She apparently cried for help, but to no avail.

Her bloodied body was later found after the attackers had left the house. She sustained wounds on the head and it appears that a sharp object was used to stab her.

The deceased's son, Mr Aaron Mukwevho, said the killing of his mother had left them in shock and with broken hearts. “We are greatly saddened. Her death has left a void which will not be easy to fill. We are just putting all in the hands of God that He will guide us in this time of

need,” he said. Tshilwavhusiku police spokesper-

son Const Musiwalo Mahuwa said that after intensive investigations, they managed to make a breakthrough and arrest a suspect. Mahuwa thanked the community for their help in crack-ing the case.

A neighbour of the deceased, Mr Writer Tshivhidzo, appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The case was postponed to 2 Feb-ruary for a bail application.

A community leader in Magau, Sylvester Mulaudzi, openly con-demned the brutal murder. He hailed the arrest as a breakthrough, not only for the police, but also for the com-munity. According to him, the com-munity is suffering from a scourge

of crime. Gogo Kutama will be buried tomorrow (Saturday) at Magau and the service will start at 06:00.

Makhado Municipality says that hawkers in Burger Street are conducting business illegally.

The Makhado Municipality says that hawkers who continue operat-ing businesses in Burger Street are on the wrong side of the law.

The spokesperson for the mu-nicipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, told

Limpopo Mirror on Monday that the hawkers were told to relocate, because Burger Street remained a prohibited area for hawking. “All hawkers conducting business in this area are doing so illegally and they are

Hawkers in Burger Street not keen on moving outall aware of this,” Bobodi said. “This is in terms of the permits issued by the municipality that are in their possession.”

Bobodi stressed that no permit was issued authorizing any person to conduct a business in Burger Street. According to him, the hawkers had been conducting business in that area for the past ten years.

“There was no dedicated officer to enforce the prohibition [then],” he explained. “Mr TE Netshia-vha has since been dedicated to control hawkers in town and elsewhere within the municipal area for the purpose of enforcement of Council by-laws.”

The hawkers are, however, worried about the municipality's response because the municipality is only starting to 'enforce the Council by-law' now. “They are speaking of 10 years of ignoring their own by-law,” says Emmanuel Muleya (29). “Where were they all along and what were they up to?”

Muleya says that it is a bad idea or plan for the municipality to tell hawkers to relocate to Eltivillas since business there had dried up in the mid-1990s. “Our municipality should speak about finding ways to provide us with jobs rather than saying impracticable things,” he said. “My children need to eat and go to school. If the municipality does not provide me with a decent job, I am still going to operate my business on this spot until the hair on my head turn grey.” Ms Florah Manenzhe (56), who has been a hawker for the past 21 years, says that hawkers are prepared to have a meeting with the municipality, where both parties might try to reach a mutual understanding.

“The streets of this town are always dirty because there are not enough cleaners,” she said. “The mu-nicipality must also consider adding us to the team that cleans the streets. Telling us about going to conduct business in Eltivillas is like pushing us into a dark, bottomless pit where hope doesn't exist.”

“I called neighbours who came and helped take the granny to the local hospital, where she is recuperating,”

she said.Sadiki said that a man had been

abusive towards them for a long time. She mentioned that she had applied for a protection order against him earlier this month. “This man has been threatening me with dangerous weapons and he had on numerous occasions attacked and assaulted me for no apparent reason,” she added. According to her, she became fed up

and decided to cut their relationship. “He could not take no for an an-swer and jealousy drove him to do this evil deed to our family. We have lost everything because of this abusive man,” she said.

The poor family, who depended on the gran-ny’s grant, now has to squat with neighbours. “Life is not easy. We do not know how we are going to replace the burnt house and its contents as no one is working in the family. We are appealing to anyone who can assist us, be it with materials, cash or food. We do not have anything,” said Sa-diki. Thohoyandou po-lice spokesperson Maj Mashudu Malelo said that they had arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the in-cident. He was charged with arson and will ap-pear in court soon.

Mr Leif Rahmqvist (middle) in conversation with the chairman of Alldays Municipality, Mr Jonny Kgorane, during the formalisation of the partnership agreement for the establishement of an orphanage. He donated several million rands for the project, which is already underway. According to the municipal representative, this is the first project of its kind, proving that local government and the private sector can indeed achieve much with partnerships like this one. Rahmqvist said he and his company were proud to be part of this project. "I have always believed in investing in people and making a difference," he said. According to Mr Hennie Erwee of the legal firm that donated its legal services for the project, "We are proud to be part of this project. I sincerely hope that more private businessmen will follow the example of Mr Rahmqvist."

A three-year dream of a local Swedish landown-er, Mr Leif Rahmqvist, became a reality when a partnership agreement was reached late last year between the Alldays local municipality, the local community and Mr Rahmqvist from Mapungubwe Game Reserve (Pty) Ltd.

Rahmqvist’s dream to establish a fully-fledged orphanage and day-care centre is now beginning to take shape. Construction of the first phase of the projects is already in progress.

Rahmqvist was touched by the poverty, home-lessness and disease encountered in the surrounding area of the town of Alldays, close to his ranch. There are many orphans who have lost their parents to Aids and other diseases, he said.

"The children get one daily meal at a local drop-in centre run by volunteers. They are exposed to a vulnerable existence in the streets, without adult care, clean water or toilets, much less basic health care and medicine. It is not right that children have it this way. All children are entitled to a good start in life, with care and a safe shelter. I therefore founded the Mapungubwe Foundation Orphanage in order to build and run an orphanage, to give these homeless children a safe place to grow up. A place that will provide a proper upbringing, with enough to eat, clean water, health care, medicine, education and a bed of their own for each child,” he added.

According to him, the Mapungubwe Foundation Orphanage is a long-term project with the goal to create a brighter life and future for the children. In the first phase, they will construct and build the orphanage. The home will also house teachers, nurses and other staff who will stay with the chil-dren. He also mentioned that many of the families had problems with illness and disease, thus making the children socially and economically vulnerable. According to him, it is important that the children do not lose social contact. “The plan now is to build an orphanage with 20 beds for children with acute needs. Directly adjacent to the orphanage, we will build a day-care centre for those children who con-tinue to live with families. When the house is built,

we will run this operation and secure for each child a bed, nutritious food, clean drinking water, water toilets and washrooms, education, school books, help with homework and a school uniform. They will also get access to support people, a reading room, various activities, and health care.”

Rahmqvist also mentioned that the project relies entirely on voluntary contributions. “Our goal is to invite

and engage neighbours, private busi-nesses, and state and local authorities to participate in the project. Our plan is to also involve teachers and nurses from abroad. We guarantee fully that each and every penny donated will go into the project for the benefit of the children. No administration costs will be paid. This is guaranteed by our system, in which no one can access the orphanage’s money.”

A top learner from Louis Trichardt High School, Sipho Mbadaliga, was rewarded with a laptop and R3 000 in cash by Frank Mukhaswakule Saturday classes. Ratshili mentioned that the Saturday classes started in 2006 and since then they managed to improve the marks of many learners. He thanked the sponsor, Vhusafheli Ramanugu.

Mr Hendrick Maboho (29) shows the wound he sustained on his left arm during the night of terror.

Mr Hendrick Maboho (29) who was stabbed.

He cried for help, but his attacker continued to butcher him. If it were not for his friend, he would have died.

This is the account of Mr Lufuno Hendrick Maboho (29) from Tshakhuma Muhuvhoya village when he describes the night he escaped a possible gruesome death.

Tshakuma man eludes dreadful deathMr Maboho alleges that he was attacked by

Tshifhiwa Muhanelwa (18) on the night of 18 Janu-ary whilst playing pool at a local tavern. It is alleged that Muhanelwa was on a drinking spree with his friends and had been searching for Lufuno prior to the incident. He allegedly mentioned to his friends whilst they were consuming alcohol that when he met him (Lufuno), he was going to kill him.

According to Maboho, his attacker told him that he wanted to kill Maboho for exposing him to the police. He said Muhanelwa told him that he was the one feeding the police with information about Muhanelwa's alleged criminal activities.

Describing the night of terror to Limpopo Mirror, Lufuno said it was awful and he had almost kissed the world goodbye. “He said I was the one who told the police about his alleged murder and rape cases. He then took out his knife. I shielded myself with the table. He told his friends to take the table away and that he wanted to kill this lifeless body - referring to me. His friends pushed me to him and he started stabbing me,” said Maboho.

Maboho ran away from the scene, but his attacker followed him. “I then got to my friend's home, crying for help. Muhanelwa and his friends were following me.

They stabbed me whilst I was still bleeding and crying out loudly. My friend then arrived, holding an axe. He scared them and they fled from the scene,” said Maboho.

A spokesperson for the Levubu police confirmed the incident. The police have described Muhanelwa as a notorious criminal, who had been arrested before and charged with assault with the intent to cause grievously bodily harm, rape and com-mercial robbery. “We have opened an attempted murder case and the suspect has already appeared in court,” said Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola.

Muhanelwa briefly appeared in the Vuwani Mag-istrate's Court on Monday (20 January) with one of his alleged accomplices, Mr Fhulufhelo Mudau (18). They remain in custody and they will appear again on February 25.

On Sunday (January 19) Tshakhuma community members took to the streets to show their disap-proval for the alleged evil deeds of Muhanelwa and his group. This prompted the Tshakhuma chief to call for an urgent meet-ing, which was held last Wednesday.

During the meeting, the community resolved that they no longer want-ed those perpetrators to stay in the area. "As a community, we signed a petition stating that those people who are a threat to our society should not return," said Tshakhuma acting chief Elvis Nemadzivhandi-la. "Most community members were living in fear because of these people," he added.

Employee in custody for theftTrade unionist Kennedy Phalanndwa passes awayThe Musina police arrested a 30-year-old Zimbabwean wom-an after she had allegedly been stealing items from her place of work in town.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, a worker was seen by a security guard from outside while stuffing items inside her bag at around 10:00 last Thursday. The security guard then went inside the shop and alerted the shop owner about the theft.

“The owner was doubtful when

Ms Nkhangweleni Phalannd-wa, sister of struggle veteran and fiery unionist, the late Kennedy Phalanndwa, said her brother was lonely before his passing away.

Phalanndwa (57) of Makware-la died a fortnight ago and was buried at Mbaleni last week. His funeral followed a memorial

service held at the AME Church at Makwarela.

Phalanndwa, who worked tire-lessly as a trade unionist, died a very poor man who depended on handouts from friends and assis-tance from the local home based care unit. During his funeral ser-vice, all the structures he served in arrived in their numbers with

his face pasted on their shirts.Speakers who addressed the

funeral attendees, blamed the affairs of the ANC of late as hav-ing contributed to him dying in poverty. Former ANC Limpopo Provincial secretary turned busi-nessman, Mr Benny Boshielo, said he knew Phalanndwa as a fearless fighter for justice. “I

the security officer pointed to one of his store assistants as a possible thief,” said Ramagwede. “The bag belonging to the suspected thief was searched and some items stolen from the shop were discov-ered.”

The owner was shocked and speech-less when he discov-ered that one of the employees was steal-ing from him. The po-lice were called to the scene.

“She was ques-tioned and she con-fessed that she had been stealing for some time and that there were more things at her room,” Ramag-wede said. “The police then drove to her place

and recovered lots of stolen items. She said that she normally sold the items each time she went home to Zimbabwe.”

The value of the stolen goods is estimated at R6 900.

Ramagwede confirmed that the suspect, who was later identified as Tabeth Peta, had been charged with theft and being found in possession of suspected stolen goods. “She appeared in court on Friday (17 Jan-uary) and her case was postponed to 3 February, pending further investi-gations,” Ramagwede said.

The suspect, Tabeth Peta, photographed with some of the alleged stolen goods. (Photo supplied)

have known him for 26 years and he consistent-ly worked tirelessly for the improvement of the lives of his people. “We will miss him dearly,” he said.

Nkhangweleni said her brother lived alone and never married. “He was only committed to politics and to help his fellow-men and nothing else,” she said. Accord-ing to her he was a quiet person, who only con-fided to his comrades.

“He lived for his com-rades and they are the ones who know him bet-ter. We are very proud of his selfless contribu-tions in his community,” she said.

Phalanndwa was born on 16 June 1957. He was an ANC organiser in 1994 and later served a term as a member of the Limpopo Provincial legislature and later as a councillor. He later became an organiser for Nehawu.

Mr Steven Milabo with the roof of his house that was blown away by the storm.

Storm brings hardship and joy to couple

Community celebrate pioneer’s 100th birthday

The disabled Milabo couple from Mianzwi village outside Thohoyandou are left homeless after the recent heavy storms blew their roof away.

The couple and their three children, aged between 5 and 12 years, are now risking their lives by staying in a roofless two-roomed house. They cannot afford to replace the roof that was blown away by the storm on 10 January.

The family, who rely on a social grant and crop farming to make a living, has covered the house with a tent, which they were given by a relative.

The head of the family, Mr Steve Milabo (48), who was born semi-paralyzed on his left side, says he failed to get assistance from the local councillor. Milabo says he is concerned that the local

government seems to care less about him.

“In 2000, I was told my name was approved for an RDP house. My joy was short-lived as the house was given to someone who had a house to stay in. By that time I did not have a house to stay in as my house collapsed because of the floods,” says Milabo.

He added that when he recently informed his ward councillor about his situation, “she said she can only arrange food parcels for me. I need a house, I don’t need food parcels as I can buy food for my family from the grants we are getting and little money we are making from farming,” says Milabo.

Cllr Joyce Davhana says there is nothing she can do about Mi-labo’s RDP house, because the incident happened before she

became councillor. “He should not have allowed anybody to take his RDP house away. The problem is that his name is now registered on the system as a person who already owns an RDP house. This makes it difficult for him to get another house.”

Thu lame la Mun ic ipa l i -ty spokesperson, Nndwamato Tshiila, says that they will try their best to make sure that they resolve this issue. I will speak to the councillor so that we can see how we can help Milabo get his RDP house,” says Tshiila.

Meanwhile, Milabo says he is happy that the storm that blew away the roof was followed by heavy rain. “The rain brought joy. It watered my sweet potato plants and I will be selling my vegetables from the end of Janu-ary,” says Milabo.

The community of Madombidzha Zone 2 joined the wife, children, grandchil-dren and relatives of Vho-Johannes Siphuma Ligaraba in celebrating the old man’s 100 years on Sunday.

Ligaraba, affectionately known as Vhavenda in the village, was born at Magoni in 1914.

The ceremony was marked with cheer-ful songs as all people sang and danced. Ladies and girls ululated while men and boys whistled and shouted well-wishes to one of the godfathers in the village.

Nestled in a chair next to his sweetheart, Vho-Johanah Ligaraba (78), Vhavenda listened to different speakers who rose and described him as a kind father and

grandfather in the village, who is well known for his strong, booming voice when he sings at community ceremonies and in the United African Apostolic Church.

Ligaraba’s son, Ndivheni, said that he thanks God for granting him and his sib-lings the rare privilege of having a father who reached a hundred years of age. “He’s a century old,” he said.

“As his children, we also thank him for raising us in love and instilling a sense of humanity in each of us. His life deserves to be celebrated.”

Ligaraba’s long-time friend and neigh-bour, Vho-Bilisha Mavhunga (88), gave a short history about the olden days when he and Ligaraba were growing up at Magoni

in the west Soutpansberg mountain. “We became best buddies in 1947,”

he told the people inside the two tents. “I have always looked up to Vhavenda as an older brother. He’s that kind of human being who respected and worshipped God for who he is, our Maker.”

Bilisha then mentioned that Vhavenda was among a group of men who dug the rocky surface until they found an under-ground tributary at Magoni. “Don’t look at him now and say, ‘look, this is an old man’ – no, he is only ageing gracefully,” he smiled.

Vhavenda thanked all the people of Madombidzha for the support and called everyone to respect and thank God for a

gift of life. “Life and death are in the hands of God; now people must obey God,” he said.

Vhavenda further ascribed his long life to the fear of God, a healthy lifestyle of a non-smoker, non-drink-er, hard worker and a peacemaker.

He said that the sup-port and respect that the wife and children give to a father is one reason why he lives longer in this world.

Vhavenda is blessed with four daughters (one of whom had passed on), two sons, 60 grandchil-dren and many, many great grandchildren.

Vho-Johanah Ligaraba (78) presents a spoonful of cake to her sweetheart, Vho-Johannes Siphuma Ligaraba.

CWP changing livesTakie’s humour will linger for much longer

The Community Work Programme (CWP) is changing the lives of people, taking them from situations of severe poverty to an acceptable standard of living. The Ma-name-Paradise community in Nzhelele is one of many communities benefiting from this government programme.

Recently, the workers of this programme in the village identified a family who were living in a dilapidated rondavel and offered to build them a one-room house.

“We sought building materials from several people in our community and used them to build this house,” said the project co-ordinator, Ms Khumbudzo Sidimela.

Ms Sophie Mariba (53), an unemployed mother of four, said that she was stranded and did not know where to go whilst her rondavel was gradually caving in on her. Her eldest son, Rambau Mulaudzi (29), thanked the project members for rescuing his family. “We were stranded and did not have an alternative. If it were not for these people, we would have been suffering.”

The councillor of Ward 36, Cllr Mbulaheni Magada, said that Ms Mariba was registered as a beneficiary in an RDP housing project. “The RDP house may be approved and constructed this year,” he said.

The CWP became a fully-fledged pro-gramme in 2010, with the goal of addressing poverty and unemployment. Projects employ-ees work two days a week and eight days a month and earn a moderate income. In this community, the project initially hired 112 employees.

According to Sidimela, the project has been improving the conditions of public entities within their community. “We clean schools, clinics, roads and graveyards,” she said. At schools the project was fighting malnutrition through initiated gardens.

“Yawee, muthu wa u luga nan-di… (Oh, what a kind per-son…”). This was the reac-tion of one of the relatives of Takalani Louneth Netshivha (55) when he heard about the latter’s death for the first time.

Takie, as he was affectionately called, was a well-known, expe-rienced financial advisor who worked for the Thohoyandou Branch of Metropolitan Life for 27 years. At the time of his death, he was the sales manager of the company. He died unexpectedly after a short illness.

His funeral service, which was

held at his house in Thohoyandou Block F a fortnight ago, was a celebration of a life that was well-lived. He was finally laid to rest in his home village of Makonde, north of Thohoyandou. Family members forgot their pain for a while and joined thousands of mourners who continued to crack jokes about Netshiavha’s life of love throughout the funeral proceedings.

Because of his love and excel-lence in Tsotsi taal, Takie had several names, which included Vha Ta, So So, Die Buuda, Eintlek, Broer and many more.

Everyone who spoke at the funeral described Takie as an ever-smiling individual who would not even hurt a fly. His best friend, Billy Ramuntshi, said during the funeral: “I met Vha Ta in 1974 when we shared the same desk at Mphaphuli High School. I have never seen him angry. He never fought with anyone. We were also involved in the Black Power uprising on 4 October 1977 when we were protesting against bantu education. He was such a good person, who was ready to assist everyone who needed assistance.”

Represent ing the children, Takalani Net-shivha said before she burst into tears: “Vha Ta loved his children. He would drive us to school every day and collect us, despite his busy sched-ule. We used to relax with him on the stoep while he cracked jokes in his Tsotsi taal. We don’t believe that our lovely father is gone. He was such a caring father and we will always re-member him.”

Mr Davis Manenzhe, representing Metropol-itan Life, said it would be difficult to fill the vacuum left by Takie in the workplace.

He is survived by his mother, wife Thandi, eight children and one grandchild.

Takalani Netshiavha’s widow, Thandi (front), passes the graveside of her husband shortly after the funeral at Makonde village.

Community work for former prisoners

Two die when lightning strikes

A group of ex-prisoners and correctional offi-cials cleaned the Khogonyane Primary School’s yard and cleared the wild bushes that had grown in the school’s sport field, as part of a social reintegration programme on Saturday.

This came after the school management team at Khogonyane Primary contacted the Department of Correctional Services to provide urgent cleaning services to the school. “The school was given a short notice to start with preparations to host the cluster athletics on Tuesday, but we had no good sport field ready for the races,” said sports organ-iser, Mr Maanda Muofhe. “So we needed the help urgently.”

The head of the community correction facility in the Thohoyandou management area of the Department of Correctional Services, Mr Farisani

Two people from Dombodema vil-lage outside Beit Bridge were killed by lightning in two separate events during the weekend.

Police spokesperson, Insp Philisani Ndebele said Iswelihle Gumbo (13) was killed while her mother, Sin-gathini Gumbo (35) and uncle, Butho Ndlovu (30), survived the incident. He said the trio were working in their field in Dombodema at around 17:00 on Friday when lightning struck them before they could seek shelter.

“As it started to rain, Iswelihle

was struck by lightning and she died instantly, while her mother and uncle were taken to hospital for treatment,” said Ndebele.

In another incident a 34-year-old woman from the same village was also killed by a bolt of lightning while tending her fields on the same day.

The councillor, Mr Toni Mlotshwa, said the woman, Ms Thembeni Nx-umalo was found dead in the field by a relative on Friday afternoon. “She was alone tending her fields when the incident occurred,” Mlotshwa said.

Mulaudzi, coordinated the cleaning project. He said that the department

had adopted the school last year, when they prom-ised the school that they would always be available to assist them when it was needed.

“We don’t want to hear of cases where our children are bitten by snakes, because there are no safe play grounds for them,” Muladzi said. “We do this kind of work free of charge. Our rehabilitated parolees are always ready to do the job.”

Mulaudzi explained that they do not only work in schools. “Our cleaning and other services are extended to chiefs kraals, clinics and community crèches,” he said.

An ex-prisoner, Mr Stanley Mulaudzi, who is continuing with his studies at a further education and training institution in the district, indicated that he finds joy and peace of mind in the knowledge that he is contributing to the pupil’s safety.

“I take this opportunity to encourage the learners of this and other schools in Vhembe to take edu-cation seriously by studying hard,” said Mulaudzi.

A group of ex-prisoners and correctional officials were photographed while busy cleaning the Khogonyane Primary School.

Photographed during the cleaning project are (from left to right) Messrs Stanley Mulaudzi, Thinus Steyn, Vincent Murendi, Godfrey Musweswe, Petrus Mudzanani and Farisani Mulaudzi.

Lambani the new Univen legal bossThe principal of the University of Venda (Uni-ven), Prof Peter Mbati welcomed the appoint-ment of Adv Edward Lambani as director of legal services at the university.

He fills the vacancy left by the late Dr Nanga Lidovho, who passed away in a motorbike accident last year.

“Considering the exceptional insight into legal issues and his familiarity with the higher education environment, we are grateful to have someone of his outstanding calibre in the university’s legal services department,” said Mbati.

The experienced Lambani said he grabbed the appointment with both hands. “I am committed to make a positive contribution towards the achieve-ment of the university’s predetermined objectives and I am grateful to plough back to the university” he said.

Lambani holds a B Proc from the University of Zululand, LLB from Univen, LLM in property laws from the University of the Witwatersrand and an LLM (cum laude) in administrative and municipal law from the University of Johannesburg.

Prior to coming to Univen, he worked at different institutions. Between 1991 and 1992 he served as a member of council of Univen, while between 1997 and 2004 he served as the chairperson of the Univen disciplinary appeals committee. He also served as secretary to the Limpopo Legislature between 2002 and 2011.

Lambani also occupies a number of senior posi-tions in both public and private institutions.

Prior to his appointment, he was the director of Eddie Lambani Inc, a firm of attorneys based in Polokwane.

40 YEARS IN BUSINESS!

R-Vuyo releases new gospel album Second for BishaAs a 13-year-old boy, Robert Muedi would sing and imitate gospel songs wherever he was. In 2005, he joined the Tshid-zivhe Baptist Church choir and later the church’s worship team, and since then he had told himself that he would one day record his music.

Today, Muedi (26), commonly known as R-Vuyo to his horde of fans, is living his dreams. He has just released a monster gospel hit, Ndi a Livhuwa, which, according to its warm reception in the music market, is making ripples and shaking the whole industry. The

release of the CD in December has made Muedi the talk of the town and an instant celebrity.

The 12-track CD, which has become like a national anthem with no function complete with-out its being played, is the prod-uct of a constant struggle to have it recorded. “I had material for this album for a long time but could not record it because of a lack of funds.

“The CD is packed with pow-erful songs which are just to praise God and say thank you for having made my dreams a reality,” he said. He said people

should give thanks for everything that God gives them as ordered in the Bible. “The title track, Ndi a Livhuwa, relates my personal experiences, the hardships I came through in order to be where I am. For all this, I thank God and will keep on praising Him,” he said.

The CD was recorded at Con-Vee Recording Studios in Tho-hoyandou. It is available at Dako-ta Music and other music outlets in Thohoyandou. Those having difficulties in getting the music and for bookings can phone him at 079 660 2009.

He might not be having a distinctive posture, but this former bare-footed village herd boy is making his mark in the South African gospel fraternity. The 27-year-old Phumudzo Nthathe-ni hails from Khubvi, north of Thohoyandou. He uses Bisha as his stage name and he leaves gospel music lovers crying for more wherever he performs.

Although his first album, Ri a vha losha which was released in 2010, is still a hit with his followers, the prolific artist has just released his second album, Not by mighty. “This album is a culmination of hard work and it is a gift to all my fans who have been supporting me throughout my music career,” he said.

Bisha said he started singing at an early age. “Church members realised that I was gifted when I used to sing in the church choir in 1996. I just sang for fun, but everyone just talked about my beautiful voice. That is the reason why I decided to take music seriously.”

He added that he was also encouraged to sing by local famous gospel artist, Hani Mutele who also happens to be his neighbour. “Hani is my role model and we used to emulate him during his rehearsals at home. I told myself that one day I will be like him and that is where I gathered courage to take music seriously.”

Bisha’s latest album include soothing tracks like Ri do imba hosanna, Ri a u livhuwa, A thi nga humeli murahu, Ro I wana ndila, Makube Njala, Ngi zom’bonga ngani, We worship you and Tshifhambano. Recorded, marketed and distributed by Dzinambini Music in Pretoria, the album has started to receive airplay in local and regional radio stations.

For public performance and CD orders, Bisha can be contacted on 071 333 9605.

Top Tshivenda musicians recognisedTshivenda singing artists and groups were awarded during the 2nd edition of the Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima), shortly before Christ-mas last year.

At a time when the music industry is plagued by the scourge of piracy, which leaves artists earning nothing from their work, the Tshima awards brings solace in the hearts of these artists. Each award comes with a R10 000 cash prize.

The Makhado-based Sir McKleker vs Tshibule-bule dominated the awards when they won two prizes, namely Best Tshivenda Song of the Year and Best Tshivenda Group of the Year. “The two awards symbolise the fruit of our hard work,” Sir McKleker said.

The Tshivenda Female Artist of the Year, Van-empha, said the award serves to affirm that she is on the right track as a singer. “I will continue giving my fans music that has uplifting messages,” she promised.

The other artists who made it to the list of win-ners are Dzomo la Venda (Tshivenda Praise Song Artist of the Year), Bhamba (Best Newcomer of the Year), Takalani Mudau (Best Tshivenda Male Artist of the Year), Cornerstone (Best Tshivenda Contemporary/Afrosoul Group of the Year), 2 Minutes vs Dupa (Best Tshivenda Dance Song of the Year), Marcus Mundalamo (Best Tshivenda Traditional Artist), Thifhelimbilu & Gaz’lam Rumba Boyz (Best Tshingondo Group of the Year), Lufuno Dagada (Best Tshivenda Gospel Artist of the Year), Burning Doctor (Best Tshivenda Reggae Artist) and C-Jay (Best Tshivenda Hip-hop Artist of the Year).

Even the organisers believe that this time around there was a significant growth and improvement in the project compared to the previous year. “As the event organisers, we are very pleased with the growth this event demonstrated. We are very mind-ful of the fact that this was our second year,” said the project director, Mr Augustine Nethononda.

Nethonda extended the project’s gratitude to all the artists for taking part in the awards. They also thanked the sponsors, media and other stakeholders who came on board to make the project a success. “We would also like to urge our municipalities

and all the local businesses to lend a hand by in-vesting in this course,” he pleaded. “At the end of the day, it’s about uplifting our very own brothers and sisters. As a nation that is rich in history and heritage, we will be failing our kids if we fail to preserve what is ours”.

Sir McKleker.

“Stokvel” case is dragging on...

Kutama-Sinthumule centre assists Takalani Children’s Home

“This case has been dragging on since October 2012 and it is now starting to affect us badly as complainants and victims of the crime.”

These are the words of a complainant in a night robbery case that is scheduled for a hearing in the Sibasa Regional Court. This case was initially transferred from the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court to the Sibasa Regional Court for trial some time last year. The case had been dragging on and on, because one of the four accused, Ms Vhulahani Ndou (40), is seemingly failing to secure a legal representative.

The 55-year-old Freddy Mulovhedzi, Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi (22), Lufuno Mavhunge (29) and Ndou stand accused of stealing R28 000 from the local stokvel’s treasurer, Mrs Joyce Mukwevho, at her home. The robbery is alleged to have taken place at a residential house in Tshakhuma-Luvhalani on 3 October 2012. This case followed after Mukwevho and her daughter Aluwani were awakened by men who assaulted them with an iron bar, demanding money from them. The two ladies eventually handed the thieves R28 000, which reportedly belonged to the local stokvel. Mukwevho and her daughter were seriously injured during the robbery and Mukwevho was consequently hospitalised for six days. All the accused are out on R1 000 bail, except Mulovhedzi (snr), who had since violated his parole conditions. At the time of his arrest, he was on parole, after serving more than 10 years in jail for a similar crime. All the accused appeared in court on 17 and 21 January, and a date for trial was set for 21 March. “We just hope the trial will start,” said Aluwani. “This case is also affecting my studies, because I had to go to court when I should have been in class.”

The Kutama-Sinthumule Correc-tional Centre (KSCC) continues to improve the lives of vulnerable communities in the area where it conducts its business.

The centre regularly uses money it raises during its annual golf day to help vulnerable non-governmental organizations.

Takalani Children’s Home in Si-loam village recently benefited from this charity. The money generated during last year’s annual golf day was used to help the home-based care centre. KSCC donated a standby generator, groceries, the enhancement of the playground and the installation of the generator, all to the cost of

R70 000.Prison director Mr Lazarus Ncon-

gwane said they saw a need to help Takalani Children’s Home after it was found to be in dire need of a standby generator. “We realised that the issue was a priority and we felt that we should assist them,” he said. According to him, the children’s

home uses candles in cases where the electricity goes off. They also enhanced the children’s playground and playing facilities, including the children’s’ swings. “After realising that they might not have the capacity to install the generator, we installed it for them,” he added. The board of Takalani thanked KSCC for the help-ing hand. Mrs Rosina Tshikovhele, director of the centre, said the aid would be a massive help. She said they would use the money budgeted specially for groceries to purchase stationery for the children this month.

Since its inception in 1988, Takala-ni Children’s Home had been mostly relying on donations for survival. Initially the home accommodated only 11 children, but today it has 50 children who are abandoned, abused and orphans. The home was started by the Reformed Church and is situated in three rondavels. The deputy chair-person of the board, Rev Mbulaheni Muhali, said this proved that KSCC was devoted to helping needy organi-sations. “Our partnership with KSCC is very great and proves that they are people who sacrifice to make other people’s lives better,” he said.

Photographed with some of the groceries donated by KSCC are, from left to right, Ms Hes Enslin from KSCC, Mr Robert Livhoyi (home-based care centre board member and fundraiser), Mr Lazarus Ncongwane (KSCC director), and Mrs Rosina Tshikovhele (director at the home-based care centre).

Joe’s Express FC will be fighting like a wounded tiger when they host Great North FC in their Safa Second Division League match at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow.

Express are still fresh from a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Giyani Hotspurs at the Giyani Stadium. The team’s coach, Mr Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana, has indicat-ed that they had put their defeat against Giyani Hotspurs behind them, saying they were looking forward to collecting full points tomorrow. Ramphabana said that his players were healthy and ready for action.

It would be a suicidal mistake for Joe's if they underestimated Great North. The Polokwane side proved in their last four matches that they are a hard nut to crack. Players like John Ma-roke and Elias Sefako can cause havoc to the defence of Express if they are not properly marked.

Phungo All Stars will entertain Giyani Hotspurs at the Makha-do Eltivillas grounds. All Stars are armed to the teeth. They will pin their hopes on players like Khumbudzo Mu-vhango, Marks Munyai and Hulisani Mathugana when it comes to scoring goals.

Rospa United must win their away match a g a i n s t L e p h a l a l e Young Killers when

they meet at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale. Apart from the fact that a win will push them out of the danger zone on the league log, Rospa need a victory in order to restore the team’s pride. They donated points to their opponents home and away over the past weeks.

Bellevue Winners Park will host Mighty FC at the Nwamitwa grounds. The match not to be missed, however, will be between Blue Rocks and Magezi FC. It

will be staged at the Nkowan-kowa Stadium near Tzaneen. Blue Rocks are a difficult side to beat at home, while Magezi are one of the hot league-title contenders.

Basel FC will play against Ray Pillars at the Makwarela Stadium and Dynamos will meet Winners Park at the Nwamitwa grounds. Modimolle Aces will have a date with Mosesetjane All Stars at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle.

VHEMBE FET COLLEGE VACANCY

Photographed during the event with other dignitaries are, from left to right, sitting: Chief David Davhana, Cllr Dorcus Mmboi, Cllr Connie Mphaphuli and Mr Morris Chauke, the principal (back).

The office of the executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality has visited Ozias Davhana Secondary School. It is one of the most improved schools in the country.

Cllr Dorcus Mmboi, together with Vhembe Chief Whip Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali, Speaker Cllr Claudine Fungheni, Cllr Connie Mphaphuli, Cllr Rapson Rambu-wabi and other dignitaries, visit-ed the school on Tuesday (28/1).

Ozias Davhana produced a 94.39% pass in the 2013 ma-tric results, a great improve-ment compared to the 33% pass rate the school produced in 2009, which made it one of the worst-performing schools in the district and province.

Speaking to the pupils and school management, which also included principal Morris Chauke and SGB leader Balan-ganani Sikhwai, Mmboi said the school had made the Vhembe district and province proud with their results.

She added that the district mu-nicipality would look into pos-sibilities to address challenges that the school was facing, such as the lack of desks, laboratories, computers, a hall, a kitchen, a library, an admin block and good, functional toilets.

The school started in January 1990 with three teachers. It only had its first matrics two years later. Principal Chauke joined the school on 13 July 2010 as

caretaker principal. Since then, the results have improved ev-ery year from 69% to 87.2% to 92.7% and the 94.39% achieved last year, with 107 pupils and with eight distinctions.

Chauke, who is running a school of 1 165 learners, said he was confident that his support staff of 45 teachers would help to achieve the 100% pass rate he was targeting this year.

"My aim is to produce a 100% pass rate in all classes, from Grade 8 to 12.”

Meanwhile, Chief Davhana encouraged the learners to work hard and contribute to the devel-opment of the community and country.

Vhembe District salutes Ozias Davhana

Tony Silima (BU/16) from High School Louis Trichardt represented the school over the weekend during a friendly athletics gathering. He won the shotput item and ended second in the high jump.

Joe’s Express to host Great North FCOne of the Vhembe-based Safa Second Division League sides, Rospa United FC, is fast becoming the milk cow of the league. They lost their fourth consecutive league match last Saturday when they suffered a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Bellevue Winners Park at the Tshifulanani Stadium.

In the three previous weeks, they also gave away league points to Joe’s Express, Phungo All Stars and Giyani Hotspurs.

Bellevue Winners Park con-tinue to shine on top of the log, following the convincing victo-ry. Rospa United are now in the third-last position on the log.

Giyani Hotspurs deposited

six points from two matches. They crushed Rospa United 4-0 last Wednesday before beating Joe’s Express 1-0 at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday.

Although they were playing in front of their home crowd, Winners Park could not absorb the pressure from Modimolle Aces, who beat them 2-1 at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Moko-pane. In the other match that was also played at the Mahwelereng Stadium, Mosesetjane All Stars played to a 2-2 draw with Lep-halale Young Killers.

Young Killers are still deep in the danger zone, despite collect-ing a point last weekend. They are in the fourth-last position,

with only four points accumu-lated from eight matches.

Ray Pillars controlled the game from the onset to the bit-ter end, but they finally lost the match to Blue Rocks. They were beaten 0-1. Blue Rocks were awarded a penalty late in the game after their striker, Ronny Maake, was brought down with-in the box. James Mathebula scored from the penalty spot.

Dynamos lost 1-2 to Magezi FC at the Peter Mokaba Athlet-ics Stadium. Great North FC and The Dolphins played to a 1-1 draw at the Polokwane Noor-delikes Rugby Stadium.

Lidoda Duvha must beat Roses United

Defenders strengthen their positionRival football association in Nzhelele

Black Leopards have two good reasons to win their National First Division League match against Roses United at the Makhuvha Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Apart from the fact that win-ning the match will restore the team’s lost pride, the victory will also keep their title hopes alive.

The Thohoyandou outfit dropped four points in two suc-

cessive matches. They were brutally walloped 2-5 by Af-rican Warriors, before sharing the glory with Baroka FC at the Makhuvha Stadium last Satur-day. Leopards are currently lying in the sixth position on the log with 24 points, nine behind the pace setters, Milano United FC.

Leopards stand a chance to narrow the gap to six points as they have a match in hand.

Lidoda Duvha will play another league match next Wednesday, February 5.

They will undertake a journey to Witbank, where they will battle it out for league points against Witbank Spurs at the Puma Rugby Stadium. In the only match that will be played on Sunday, Baroka will host Maluti FET College at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Gogobole Home Defenders strengthened their position on the log when they beat Madombid-zha Try Again in a Limpopo Dairy match at Madombidzha on Sunday.

Try Again lost the game 1-0, despite the fact that they had more scoring opportunities than the visitors.

Try Again’s fighting spirit was dampened when their two key players, Tony Marageni and Lutendo Leaka were warned with cards in the opening minutes.

Marageni obstructed Mulalo Lethole, while Leaka was being punished for a foul he commit-ted against Langanani Ramabila.

The home team nearly hit the target in the 25th minute, but Dakalo Ramuthivheli, who was un-doubtedly the man of the match, cleared the ball away for a corner kick. Dakalo Mabege tried his luck from outside the penalty area, but the Try Again acrobatic keeper, Andani Phathela, palmed the ball back into the fi eld of play.

The management of a new-ly formed soccer league are pointing fingers at the rival Makhado Football Association and accusing the officials of maladministration.

The Nzhelele Football Associ-ation’s president, John Mukwev-ho, said he formed the new league because of the lack of proper administration and the unfair judgement his team, Rabali Peace

Makers, received while they were competing under the Makhado Football Association.

During the 2011/12 soccer season, Peace Makers played against Manyii All Stars. The lat-ter was accused of fi elding three unregistered players. According to Mukwevho, Manyii All Stars were found guilty but then lodged a counter-appeal against them. Peace Makers were fi ned “for no

reason” and that was when they decided it was time to give birth to a rival association.

Mukwevho said his new as-sociation aimed to promote the growth of soccer and to work towards the betterment of society at large. He said many talented players were lingering around in the streets, but these players nev-er had the opportunity to display their skills. According to him, the

The local lads in-troduced Ndamulelo Phathela and Volcano Lethole early in the last half.

This proved to be a clever move on the part of the technical staff of Try Again, as Defenders spent the better part of the last half running for cover. The goal that sepa-rated the boys from the men came in the 78th minute. Musiwa Mutandari received a beautiful pass from Brighton Muravha and released a ground cut-ter from a close range.

What could have been the equalising goal for Try Again was turned into a nightmare, when Da-kalo Ramuthivheli headed the ball away for a corner kick with his keeper well beaten.

Dakalo Ramuthivheli (left) controls the ball, while Langanani Ramabila attempts to intercept.

Volcano Lethole of Try Again (left) shields the ball from Lutendo Makhadode.

Makhado LFA doesn’t allow players over 23 years of age to be regis-tered, which means that many of them fall back into lives of crime and end up behind bars.

The president of the Makhado Local Foot-ball Association, Mr Joseph Maphaha, re-fused to be drawn into the debate and said he didn’t know anything about a rival associa-tion. He added that they would not formally rec-ognise any breakaway association.

Maphaha expressed shock over the idea of a new league not func-tioning under SAFA’s auspices. He denied that there are any cases of maladministration in his association.

John Mukwevho (left) chairperson of the Nzhelele Football Association, and Ralson Mukwatheli, treasurer of the new association.

Mafukata’s goal seals victory for Western StarsTshiozwi Dynamos enjoyed more ball possession in their MMK Insurance League match against Western Stars at Tshiozwi on Saturday, but they suffered the pain of losing the game 1-0.

As usual, the home side was too strong in the middle of the park, but fumbled with the finishing upfront. Dynamos’ lethal striker, Mashudu “Balo” Nengovhela unleashed a powerful shot from the edge of the box in the 5th minute, but his shot was not on target.

In the 43rd minute, Stars’ Thabo Matuba re-ceived a pass from Lufuno Ndou and ran a few steps forward before dishing the ball to Phumnudzo Mafukata, who gave it the final touch. It, however, looked as if Mafukata was slightly offside and there was a huge grumble from the Dynamos supporters. Their technical staff and players also accused the assistant referee of being biased.

The home team’s supporters argued with the technical staff, who replaced Domenic Mafuleni. The fans were against the move, saying the players who were supposed to have been replaced were Matodzi Maruli or Mashudu Nengovhela.

Dynamos should have equalised late in the match, but Maanda Nengovhela’s shot missed the pole by a mere inch.

Muhangwi Mukosi of Dynamos was cautioned for unsporting conduct. Two players of Stars, Maanda Magoro and Robby Munonoka were also cautioned for rough play and time wasting.

Mirila Mabasa of Dynamos attacks with the ball, while Lucky Masutha attempts to intercept.

Oupa Sithole of United (left) and Hulisani Nendauni of Tshififi chase the ball.

Polokwane United scored a total of nine goals in their last two MMK Funeral Services League matches. They crushed Maranzhe Hungry Lions 5-1 at the Makwarela Stadium a fortnight ago, before beating Tshififi FC 4-2 at the same venue last Saturday.

United made their intentions clear from the first whistle. They threatened to score in the fourth minute and finally registered their goal five minutes later. Lengana Mogashoa caught the keeper off guard and hooked in a loose ball.

Realizing that they were being overpow-ered, Tshififi tried to frustrate the opponents via their rough skills. Two of their players, Phanuel Maluleke and Mutondi Makondo, were booked for dan-gerous tackles in quick succession.

They came to their senses soon after that and started to play their normal football. They found the equalizer in the 28th minute, when Mulalo Singo finished off a rebound after Lu-funo Mudau’s close-range attempt. In the 37th minute, United received a penalty when their fast forward, Dan-iel Mongetane, was brought down within the penalty box. Kgoge-

lo Segota converted the penalty.United were leading 2-1 when

it was time for the teams to adjourn for the half-time break. Polokwane increased the margin in the 56th minute. Elias Lamola tried his luck from the 35-meter area.

The ball hit the woodwork and bounced across the goal line.

Tshififi then lost shape in the middle of the park. They were severely punished for that when Lengana Mogashoa was on tar-get, following a defensive error.

Shaun Ramoba of United was warned with a card for wast-ing time. Mutondi Makondo of Tshififi was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence. Thapelo Maleka of United and Khakhathi Manyala of Tshififi were also sent off for exchanging blows.

Tshififi were awarded a pen-alty in the dying minutes after a defender of United handled the ball within the box. Hulisani Nendauni blasted in to bring the final score to 4-2.

Polokwane United on target againAll the first division results at a glanceAfter donating points in their last two matches, Milano Unit-ed made amends and collected maximum points last weekend. They beat Roses United 2-0 at the Wynberg Military Stadi-um on Sunday. Milano moved to the top of the log once again, following the victory.

Chippa United failed to im-press their home fans when they played to a 1-1 draw in their Cape Town derby against Vasco da Gama at the Philippi Stadium on Sunday. Chippa are now one point behind Milano.

Thanda Royal Zulu continued

to fumble in front of their home crowd.

They shared the spoils with Blackburn Rovers, following their goalless draw in Richards Bay on Saturday. Royal Zulu remain at the bottom of the log.

Back home, Black Leopards gave away two vital points when they played to a 2-2 draw with Baroka FC in their Limpo-po derby at the newly opened Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday. The draw was not good enough to restore the team’s pride, as Li-doda Duvha were brutally wal-loped 2-5 by African Warriors

at the Charles Mopedi Stadium two weeks ago.

Sivutsa Stars and Santos played to a goalless draw at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nel-spruit, but Maluti FET College were the hardest hit. They were crushed 1-4 by Witbank Spurs at the Charles Mopedi Stadium.

United FC lost 2-3 to African Warriors at the Olympia Sta-dium in Rustenburg, and Jomo Cosmos came back with a point in hand following their 1-1 draw with FC Cape Town at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday.

Adibayo shines in Univen’s victoryGodfrey “Adibayo” Mudau was a marvel to watch when his side, Univen FC, beat Tswinga Peace Makers 2-0 in their MMK Funeral Ser-vices League match at the Tswinga grounds on Sunday.

Mudau was everywhere, assisting the midfielders when the need arose and playing as a centre forward in the meantime.

Both sides managed to display entertaining football, despite the fact that rain was drizzling in the area throughout the game. The former Rospa United attacking midfielder, Freedom “Danger” Zwivhuya, had his chance nine minutes into the game. He received an excellent pass from Ronny Matodzi just outside the penalty box. Instead of unleashing, Zwivhuya chose to give the responsi-bility to Adibayo Mudau, who was in an awkward position to score. Mudau, unfortunately, shot far wide.

Peace Makers strengthened their midfield by introducing Hulisani Mamatho and Ndumeliso Matodzi for Lufuno Ramudzuli and Gole Raulinga in the 29th and 34th minute respectively.

The Univen keeper, Eugene Mbedzi, was put to the test three minutes afterwards. He was made to save Thomas Mudau’s long-range volley. Univen took the lead in the 39th minute. Adibayo Mudau broke through the defence of Peace Makers and beat the keeper with a ground cutter to bring the half-time score to 1-0. Univen utilized all three their substitution chances in the last half. They replaced Thami Simelani, Ofhani Nelukalo and Rudzani Ratshilumela with Ishmael Matodzi, Wisani Baloyi and Laughter Nthangeni respectively. Madilonga Mukwevho of Univen was the only player who was reprimanded with a card. He tackled Ndumeliso Matodzi the rough way in the 69th minute.

Adibayo completed his brace in the 80th minute. He won a loose ball from the centre of the pitch and ran straight towards the keeper to show him the wrong way.

Black Leopards’ supporters left the Makhuvha Stadium with sore hearts last Saturday after their team let Baroka FC off the hook and played to a 2-2 draw.

The result was not a true refl ection of the game as Lidoda Duvha could have scored more than half a dozen of goals in the match. Baroka were out of touch in the opening 15 minutes of the game. Their front runner, Meshack Maphangule, caused two upsets in quick succession. In the fi rst instance he held onto the ball for too long just outside the box, until he lost possession. Before long he committed a similar blunder, following a square pass from Jabulani Ndebele.

Baroka gained momentum as the game progressed. They were the fi rst to fi nd the net. Their opening goal came in the 24th minute. Excellent Mokobane beat the Leopards’ keeper, Dino Visser, with a half-volley.

The hosts continued to dominate, even after conceding the goal.

Realizing that Maphangule was not playing well, they replaced him with Karabo Tsepe in the 34th minute. Tsepe formed a deadly combination with the David Zulu at the forefront.

It was in the 38th minute when the Thohoyandou side found the equalizer. A breakdown in communication between the keeper of Baroka, Veli Motwa, and

his defender, Paul Mamabolo, gave rise to the Leopards’ opening goal. Maboke Matlakala capitalized and scored easily to bring the half-time score to 1-1.

The second half saw Baroka abandon their positions and play defensive football, relying mostly on counter-attacks. Black Leopards increased the margin through Jabulani Ndebele. He made no mistake after receiving a brilliant pass from Leon-ard Ntshangase.

Leopards later replaced Maboke Matka-kala with Ivan Mahangwahaya. That did not stop Baroka from scoring their second goal, which came via Tsepo Mothiba in the 74th minute. He scored with a bicycle kick.
