Dear Neighbors,Lindbergh Schools has always been a

strong fixture in our community, providing award-winning, world class education that prepares our children and grandchildren to be competitive in college, careers and life. Tools such as experienced teachers, small class sizes and individualized instruction are what make that possible, but a $14 million decline in local revenue since 2007-08 is putting some of our most valued pro-grams at risk.

Our district relies almost exclusively on the support of local businesses and residents like you for support. That is why the Board of Education is asking voters to stand united with us to protect our students’ futures and back a tax rate increase this November.

A few months ago, I stood onstage at our high school com-mencement ceremony and handed diplomas to hundreds of hopeful Lindbergh High School graduates. They have reason to be proud: 94 percent will go to college, and many will benefit from a portion of $10.1 million in total scholarship offers. My hope as we head into the future is that this year’s kindergarteners will have had no fewer opportunities, access to resources, or proud accom-plishments to smile about when they walk across the stage to receive their diplomas in 2023.

Now, more than ever, it is important for our Lindbergh Schools community to follow our theme and stand “United for Student Excellence” to maintain the traditions we all expect and value.

We are Lindbergh, and we are leaders. Won’t you help us main-tain that excellence in our schools and our community?

In a step to preserve extracurricular sports and activities for students, Lindbergh Schools will begin charging a nominal fee for gate admission to athletic events, and for those students who wish to participate in extracurricu-lar programs. The combined steps are estimated to generate more than $60,000 in revenue.

The Board of Education approved charging a one-time annual fee of $35 for high school students and $10 for middle school students as part of the

budget reductions process last February. This fee covers unlimited activity and athletic participation for each student during the 2010-11 school year.

In addition, the board approved a recommendation to charge adults $3 for gate admission to athletic events. This includes varsity football, varsity boys and girls soccer, varsity and JV boys and girls basketball, and wresting meets.

Lindbergh Athletic Association (LAA) is the official Lindbergh Schools community youth sports program for grades K-8. LAA offers sports including fall soccer, Futsal soccer, basketball, volleyball, spring soccer, baseball and softball. Lindbergh’s Board of Education is com-posed of seven elected directors who serve without compensation. Members are elect-ed at large to serve staggered terms of three years each. There is no limit on the number of terms a member may serve.

Regular meetings of the Board of Education are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m., in the Board Room of the Administration Building, 4900 S. Lindbergh Blvd.

The Lindbergh School District Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting Lindbergh’s commitment to excellence in education. The Foundation’s mission is to: • Endow and administer funds that award scholarships to Lindbergh High School students • Support programs and projects in the Lindbergh School District that enhance the educational experience for students • Strengthen the bond between the school district, alumni and the community

The Spirit of Lindbergh TeacherGrant Program awards grants of up to $500 each year to teachers who propose innovative and exciting projects for their classrooms. Four teachers and more than 400 students benefited directly from these grants in 2010 alone.

The LSDFScholarshipProgram man-ages and administers not only its own LSDF Scholarship Fund, but also a number of additional scholarships established in the names of retired and deceased teach-ers, administrators, parents and alumni. In 2010, 11 scholarships were awarded, totaling $12,000.Lindbergh Partners Committee is a

group of district parents, alumni, teachers and coaches who raise funds for select

capital projects throughout the district that cannot be funded with district money, due to budget constraints or other consid-erations. Possible projects include installa-tion of artificial turf on the high school athletic fields, creation of a grassy “quad” at the center of the LHS campus, refur-bishment of the Sperreng Little Theater, and a walking track at Crestwood Elementary School.LHS Alumni Association Committee

provides scholarships to Lindbergh High School seniors and supports various LHS programs using funds raised through membership dues, alumni events and alumni donations. LHSAA also maintains the alumni database, assists in organizing class reunions, coordinates alumni events and awards ceremonies, and helps sup-port targeted LSDF initiatives.

Lindbergh Schools’ OASIS program will enter its 20th year in 2010. The OASIS tutoring program pairs older adults with individual students (K-4) at one of Lindbergh’s five elementary

schools. The tutors meet one-on-one with

students for one hour a week during school. Tutors help students advance reading and writing skills. Tutors do

not need a background in teaching, just a love for children.

Lindbergh residents age 60 and older are invited to the “Senior Associates Luncheon” program, on the first Wednesday of each month. Senior Associates Luncheons include a delicious

meal, musical performances by Lindbergh students, attendance prizes and more!

Each program begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends by 11 a.m. The cost is $5. Luncheons are held in the cafeteria at

Senior ASSociAteS luncheonS

Lindbergh Schools encompasses approximately 28 square miles in the southwestern portion of St. Louis County and serves a community of approxi-mately 46,000 residents. Lindbergh is a well-established residential, suburban community with a diverse economic base made up of large retailers, shop-ping centers, restaurants and service providers.

The district currently has one early childhood center, five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school that serve approximately 5,600 students, a number that has remained stable for several years. More than 400 dedicated teachers, 75 per-cent of whom have advanced degrees, are employed throughout the district and an additional 300 administrators,

support, maintenance and security per-sonnel complete the staff.

At Lindbergh, the focus on excel-lence in education extends beyond aca-demics, to embrace social and moral development in athletics, extra-curricu-lar activities and nationally recognized character education programs.
