POLYXENA

From October 2003, a multi-media course in Modern Greek -for English, German and Dutchpupils (age 15-19) with noprevious knowledge of ModernGreek, and who will participatein exchange programmes oreducational visits to Greece orCyprus - will be available.

The basic aim is to helpovercome linguistic barriers inorder to increase personalmobility in Greece and topromote inter-cultural under-standing and communication, thus creating awareness of aEuropean identity.

Action and discovery are thekeys to learning via this method. The linguistic and socio-culturalcontent (life in a Greek family,Greek school life, recreation, social conventions, etc.) ispresented in an integratedmanner, through a story. Thestory starts in Athens airport. One of the students taking partin an exchange programmereceives a mobile phone messagefrom Zeus, who informs themthat they have been chosen tofind his daughter Athena, goddess of wisdom, and bringher back to him.

A journey starts. With access-ories such as a mobile, a palm-top, a power drink and money, the student can begin their greatadventure. Video scenes drawnfrom the real life of Greekpupils give information aboutsocial behaviour. A slide show,in the style of a documentary, provides the learner with culturalinformation about Greece.Greek music is also used toawaken the interests of thestudents.

A possibility for the learner tocheck their progress is includedin the method. Moreover, themultimedia (website) method isflexible, easy to handle and toexplore. The end product will beproduced in the form of a localwebsite, which will be madeavailable to the students on a setof CD-ROMs. Two demos areavailable and are being tested inschools by all partners.

LAN-BEST:LANGUAGEBEYONDSTEREOTYPES

******************************

The aim of the project is todevelop an Italian LanguageCourse, “Journey among theItalians”, focused on thecommunication needs ofmobility students to Italy.

The basic assumption is thatcommunication is filtered byculture, so that when peoplefrom different culturescommunicate they use the samelanguage but may attachdifferent meanings to words andtherefore misinterpret thecommunication context.

In this perspective, the projecthighlights the inter-culturaldimension of communicationand focuses on the differentcultural and language expect-ations and “stereotypes” ofmobility students to Italy, whichmay lead to mis-communication.

We have developed a needsanalysis in order to measurecommunication needs, expect-ations and stereotypes towardsItaly of 100 Finnish, Slovenianand Italian students. A 50-itemquestionnaire has been designedto measure their perceptionstowards Italian culture, itseducation system, the world ofwork and styles ofcommunication.

Based on this analysis, andconsidering the communicationneeds in study programmes andstudents’ different modes ofcommunication, we havedesigned a curriculum structuredaround four modules: the social

network (language for social-ising); the system of knowledge(language for learning); thebureaucratic maze (language forinteracting with the publicadministration); and travellingthrough the Italian system(language for mobility).

Each module will be divided intounits including activities and“critical situations”, in order toprovide an ideal linguistic andcultural “map”. This willfacilitate communication in anew socio-cultural environmentand modes of communication.

SWEDEX is developinglanguage tests at levels A2 andB1 on the scales of attainment asdefined in the “CommonEuropean Framework” of theCouncil of Europe. The targetgroups are, first and foremost, learners of Swedish who wish togo to Sweden to work or studyand who wish to test theirSwedish and/or receivecertification of their level ofknowledge, independently ofhow or where they learnedSwedish. Examinations will beheld both in Sweden and abroad.

The project started in January2002. In order to get anoverview of the amount ofinterest in an exam for Swedishas a foreign language, a needsanalysis was conducted in theinstitutions of the projectpartners in Sweden, Germanyand Poland, as well as throughthe Swedish Institute in anumber of other countries. Thissurvey showed that the interestwas great, particularly in Sweden, but also abroad.

In Spring 2003, intensive workbegan on test specifications. Theproject has developed specifi-cations containing functions, notions, topics, strategies andgrammar for levels A2 and B1.The specifications will besupplemented with scenarios, which still have to be defined. All other sections may be revisedaccordingly.

Taking the level descriptions ofthe “Common European Frame-work” as its point of departure, the project has elaborated testitems to be used in theexamination to go with specifictest formats. Prototypes for thedifferent kinds of tests suggestedhave been developed forpiloting.

The two different tests/examswill be piloted in Spring 2003and a revised version should becompleted for Autumn 2003.

Päämääränä on unkarin kielenviestinnällisten taitojensaavuttaminen. Oppikirjat ovatkommunikatiivisia, konstrukti-iviseen oppimisnäkemykseenpohjautuvia ja niissä on paljonharjoituksia. Opetuksen eri-yttämisen helpottamiseksi onlisäsanasto ja itseopiskelijoidenkäyttöön ’testaa taitosi’ -osio.Kirjoissa on runsas kuvitus.

SURVIVAL.HU is a communi-cative beginners teaching pack-age of Hungarian language andculture for Finns. It has beendeveloped mainly for adulteducation groups and for self-learning. There is a traditionallydeep interest between Finland,Estonia and Hungary based onlinguistic relations. Interesttowards the Hungarian languageis boosted by the great numberof people leaving for Hungary tostudy or work, by cultural andprofessional contacts, increasingstudent exchanges and closerelations between twinned cities,

societies and congregations.Hungary’s upcoming EUmembership also adds to itsattraction.

The departure point for theteaching material is the similaritybetween, and common linguisticbackground of, Finnish,Estonian and Hungarian. Thematerial is practical and takeshobby learners into account, soat least parts of it may beapplicable for users of othermother tongues as well.

The project was preceded by thepreparation of the beginnerstextbook. Recording on CD andMC of the beginners book, teachers’ book, intensive coursefor testing purposes andteachers’ seminar have beenprepared out of the plannedpackage of teaching material. The next publication will be afollow-up textbook withrecordings and glossary, alongwith a phrase book. The last partof the project is a short coursefor television focusing ontourism and culture. This is asignificant part of the project, since it is impossible to hear andwatch television programmes inHungarian in Finland andEstonia and also because noaudiovisual teaching material onthe Hungarian language has beenproduced in Finland.

The teaching material aims todevelop communication skills inHungarian. The textbooks arecommunicative and are based onthe constructive acquisitionprinciple, with a great number ofexercises. Streaming of theteaching process is made easierby a supplementary glossary anda test-yourself chapter forindividual learners. Textbookscome with an abundance ofillustrations.

GALANET

******************************

The aim of the Galanet projectis to allow speakers ofPortuguese, Italian, Spanish andFrench to develop inter-comprehension in Romancelanguages. It brings togetherseven partners with the aim ofproviding an Internet learningplatform that allows users topractice inter-comprehensionusing their reference Romancelanguage - or even otherparticipants’ languages - thusincreasing their ability tounderstand all the otherlanguages.

The platform is alreadyaccessible, although not yetfinalised. The concept is bothspatial and temporal: a virtuallearning space on one hand, with“rooms” and tools to trainreceptive and interactive skills (aforum, e-mail, chats, pedagogicaland linguistic resources); and a

chronological scenario - the“session” - on the other hand, which allows users to develop acommon web publication infour languages. At the end of theproject, the platform will beused as a thematic sessiongenerator for inter-comprehension between distantgroups of users (in Europe andbeyond).

The target groups are students(universities, language resourcecentres, secondary schools) andadults (life-long learning) whohave at least one Romancelanguage as a reference (either astheir mother tongue or as anadvanced second language) andwho are not necessarilybeginners in the three otherlanguages.

The state-of-play at the end ofFebruary 2003 was that theconception documents had beenfinished, the general schemata ofthe site had been defined andthe platform was 50% complete.Since 15 February, a new stagehas begun: the “protosession”,an authentic test with teams ofstudents and animators frompartners’ organisations.

In terms of other activities, theprototype modules for the self-learning area are in the processof being developed, and theresources are 60% complete.

BULGARIAN FORFOREIGNERS

EASY II

Easy II aims to develop alearning tool in four languages(Italian, Finnish, French, Ger-man and English as a “media”language) addressed to youngpeople that attend vocationaltraining courses and are, fordifferent reasons - economic, social and/or cultural - at realrisk of social exclusion.

At our first meeting in Tampereon 9-11 December 2002, westarted our work with twopresentations.

Firstly, Liisa Löfman fromOPEKO (the Finnish Institutefor Teacher Training), spokeabout the big influence thatstereotypes and prejudices haveon our lives and on the processof learning a foreign language.

Secondly, we had theopportunity to talk with PentiiHietala, of the Unit forComputer-Human Interaction atthe University of Tampere, onweb pedagogy and learningcommunities. It gave a clearperception of how important itis to define a clear pedagogy inweb-based didactic tools.

We then organised ourselvesinto two working groups, one onthe language aspect and anotheron the IT aspect.

Tasks for the next meeting areto prepare a list of learningsituations to be developed withyoung people, to propose astandard organisation of alearning situation and a standardweb page to be used as a generalmodel, and to study furtherarticles dealing with the threeaspects of the project: learning alanguage; IT opportunities; andyoung peoples’ needs.

HURRA!!! is a Polish-Austrian-British project which aims towrite, test and produce a seriesof materials for teaching Polishas a foreign language. Teams ofauthors started work in October2002 by analysing materials forteaching Polish with particularregard to the newest titles on themarket. Following that, theconcepts (thematic andstructural-lexical contents) of thefirst and second parts of“HURRA!!!” were discussed. Animportant issue of our work wasbased on relating our work tothe European structure for levelsof language skills as presented inthe “Common European Frame-work”. A prototype placementtest, allowing future students tobe placed in appropriate groups, was also prepared. The place-ment test and the pilotingmodules from the first andsecond parts of “HURRA!!!” arecurrently being tested asteaching materials on a group ofabout 200 students studyingPolish through intensive coursesbetween February and April2003 at the Prolog LanguageSchool in Cracow.
