Mobile Computing
Using a computing devicewhile in transit
Mobile computing is the ability
to use computing capability
without a pre-defined location
and/or connection to a
network to publish and/orsubscribe to information ."

Voice over Internet Protocol
(VoIP) is a technology that
allows you to make voice
calls using a broadband
Internet connection insteadof a regular (or analog)
phone line.
VoIP services convert yourvoice into a digital signal
that travels over the
Internet.

is any technique for creatingimages, diagrams, or
animations to communicate a
message.
Visualization through visual
imagery has been an effective
way to communicate bothabstract and concrete ideas
since the dawn of man.
VisualizationCurrent visualization
technology provides a full range
of hardware and techniques
from static two-dimensional
plots, to interactive three-dimensional images projected
onto a monitor, to large screen
fully immersive systems
allowing the user to interact on
a human scale.

Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) - allows users to
capture, manage, analyze, and
display geographically
referenced information
Gapminder.com - represents
statistical data in graphicallydynamic ways.
Information VisualizationTools
Google Earth - allows users to view
geographical space from different
angles and distances through the
use of superimposed satellite
imagery. It also allows users toimport publicly available datasets
and map them geographically.
JMOL - allows users to view the
chemical structure of molecules in
3-D.

Visual Communication
Visual communication as the name
suggests is communication throughvisual aid and is described as the
conveyance of ideas and information
in forms that can be read or lookedupon.
Itis primarily presented or expressed
with 2D or 3D images: signs, drawing,
typography, graphic design, color,
illustration, and electronic resources.

Animation
Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of
images to create an illusion of movement.
Animation can be made with either hand rendered
art, computer generated imagery, or three-
dimensional objects, e.g. puppets or clay figures,or a combination of techniques.

Interactive Visualization
For a visualization to be considered
interactive it must satisfy two criteria:1.Human input: control of some aspect
of the visual representation of
information, or of the information
being represented, must be availableto a human, and
2.Response time: changes made by the
human must be incorporated into the
visualization in a timely manner. In
general, interactive visualization is
considered a soft real-time task.

Developments in Artificial Intelligence
1956 John McCarthy states the term "Artificial Intelligence" as the
topic of the Dartmouth Conference, the first conferencededicated to the subject; display of the first running AI program,
the Logic Theorist (LT) written by Newell, J.C. Shaw and Simon
1957 General Problem Solver (GPS) is demonstrated by Newell, Shaw &
Simon1961 James Slagle (PhD dissertation, MIT) wrote (in Lisp) the first
symbolic mixing program, SAINT, which solved calculus problems
at the college freshman level
1963 Thomas Evans' program, ANALOGY, written as part of his PhDwork at MIT, verifies that computers can solve the same analogy
problems as are given on IQ tests

1967 Richard Greenblatt at MIT builds a knowledge-based chess-
playing program, MacHack, that is so good it achieves aclass-C rating in tournament play
Mid 80's Aaron, an independent drawing program, created by Harold
Cohen, is established at the AAAI National Conference
1990'sMajor advances in all areas of AI, with important
demonstrations in machine learning, intelligent teaching,
case-based way of thinking, multi-agent development,
preparation, uncertain analysis, data removal, natural
verbal communication, kind and translation, dream, virtual
realism, games, and other topics

champion, Garry Kasparov, in an extensively followed game
1998 first official Robo-Cup soccer match featuring table-top
matches with 40 teams of interacting robots and over 5000
bystanders
Late 90's -now
so-called "spiders", search engine programs employed bythe likes of Google and Yahoo!, are regularly "crawling" the
web to discover new content to be listed on search engine
websites; cochlear implants have become modern means of
treating severe hearing loss; prosthetics and shoes areregularly outfitted with "thinking" devices that help them
adjust to the wearer

1. Which of the discussed technologies are you using in
your teaching? How?
2. Which of the discussed technologies do you find
helpful and why?3. How can these technologies be our aid in teaching?
