Introduction

Do you have a course unit on your study programme that uses videos from LinkedIn Learning or do you want to follow a course on LinkedIn Learning independently out of your own interest? Then please read this document. This manual explains how to log on to LinkedIn Learning, how to open a course or video from a course and how to download the source files associated with a course. But there's more! For example, you can also download videos from a course for offline viewing.

1 Login to LinkedIn Learning

There are several ways to access LinkedIn Learning:

• from the tile LinkedIn Learning on Academic Software; • directly from the starting point for the student on the website of VIVES or • via a link in a Toledo course to a course or specific film clip on LinkedIn Learning.

To register on LinkedIn Learning the easiest way, we ask that you first create a LinkedIn account, preferably with your student email address (@student.vives.be) before you register on LinkedIn Learning. Once you have a LinkedIn account, you link that account to your LinkedIn Learning account and you can get started.

Therefore, in the following we will first discuss how to create a LinkedIn account; then we will explain how you can sign up for LinkedIn Learning.

1.1 Create a LinkedIn account To create an account on LinkedIn, go through the following steps:

• Surf to https://www.linkedin.com/ and click on 'Become a member' at the top.

• Fill in the requested information and follow the steps to create a LinkedIn account. Create a LinkedIn account, preferably on your student email address (i.e. [email protected]) Tip: You will be asked for specific information about your profile, community and interests. The more accurately you fill in these matters, the more LinkedIn Learning can give you suggestions about courses that might be of interest to you.

1.2 Login to Academic Software from the tile • Step 1. Open the website of VIVES https://www.vives.be, go to the English version and

click under Tools to Getting Started.

• Step 2. In the Software section, click on the grey Academic Software button to log in to Academic Software. You will need your VIVES account (r-number and password). Note: You can find specific information about logging into Academic Software on the support page via the other link called Academic Software.

• Step 3. Once you are logged in to Academic Software, you open the LinkedIn Learning tile.

• Step 5. Link LinkedIn Learning to LinkedIn account (to be performed once)

First you get a page to go to LinkedIn Learning via the login page of the association. Choose the option you prefer and click on 'Accept' to continue.

You will then be asked if you want to link your LinkedIn Learning account to your LinkedIn account (see above). Do this by clicking on "Connect my LinkedIn account".

1.4 Login via a link offered in Toledo The teacher will inform you where the link to the playlist can be found.

There are several possibilities how a link can be offered.

• A web link in Toledo. Then click on the title of that web link. • It can also be text with a link behind it. Then you just click on that link. • It can also be an image that links to a course or video from LinkedIn Learning. The example

below is structured in this way.

• Finally, it is possible that the video is shown embedded in the Toledo course.

When you are redirected to LinkedIn Learning after clicking through, you may be asked to log in. This is done in a similar way as explained in 1.2 and 1.3.

2 Opening/searching a course or film clip

A teacher can choose to place the link to a course or video directly in Toledo so that you can access it directly from Toledo. That was discussed above at 1.4. When you receive the information from Toledo, you will very often immediately arrive at the course or film fragment you need to watch.

Of course, you can also search for a course or film clip yourself.

On the homepage of LinkedIn Learning you can search in different ways:

• Via Browse: the browse function allows you to search specifically for a course or film fragment based on e.g. subject or software package.

• Via the Search bar: enter a good search term and you will quickly find what you need.

• Via the Suggestions: on the home page there are a lot of suggestions for you. This can be based on what is currently viewed by other people, what has only just been added, ... but also suggestions based on what you have previously viewed in LinkedIn Learning, or based on the LinkedIn Profile 'skills' that you yourself have specified as interesting when you have created your LinkedIn account.

3 The content of a course on LinkedIn Learning

We'll take a look at what you'll see when you open a course.

Central is the first video from the course where you have a lot of basic options. But as you can see, you can also enable captions (CC) so that the spoken text is also shown on the video.

On the right hand side you will get a lot of extra information that depends on the course. Usually you'll find the following categories:

• Overview: here you get a general overview of this course. Who made it? How long does the course last? Are there any source files (exercise files) that I can use? ...

• Contents: this tab gives you an overview of all the contents of the course. You can easily click through from the contents to a specific movie.

Note: as you can see, you can also take an 'exam' in this example. Taking an exam can lead to 'badges' that you can put on your profile if you wish.

• Q&A: This tab allows you to add a specific question to the content and share it with other learners or experts. You can also find already asked questions and answers here. Consider it a discussion forum around the subject of the course.

• Transcripts: Each spoken sentence in a movie is highlighted in the transcripts tab when the sentence is pronounced. This can help in case of ambiguities, but you can also click on a certain sentence to immediately play the corresponding part of the film fragment.

• Exercise Files: Many courses include effective practice materials that you can use to get

started yourself. In this way, you can effectively perform the exercises shown in the films yourself using the original source material. This could be Excel files during a course on Excel, for example.

• Step 3. After downloading, you can start the video from the Downloaded section on your

own starting point. This video can therefore be viewed offline.
